Posted by Superluminova
Hello scotland!!!!!!!!!!! Its about time we had our own thread

Posted by Miss UK
Whats wrong with uk thread?

Posted by Superluminova
Nothing we just want our independence! lol

Posted by mince-inside
Do I count as a Geordie living in Scotland? (certainly would not class myself as English)

Posted by scotsboyuk
@miss uk

I consider myself British first and foremost, but it is nice to have a forum for Scots. The English, Welsh and Irish chaps should have their own forum too.

Posted by absinthebri
Should have started the thread yesterday, on Burns' Night!

Posted by methylated_spirit
Yeah, it was my cousins birthday yesterday too. 19, he was. Got him a voucher for BHS, he needs new cords. Just how many Scots are on esato? Its ok mince, interloupers arent shunned.

Posted by Miss UK
Maybe I shud do a Barmie brummies thread :-) then again i'll skip ;-) how many scots r here then? Me, meths, super?

Posted by scotsboyuk
@miss uk

Posted by absinthebri

Posted by methylated_spirit
Hercule Poirot himself couldnt have guessed any more accurately, absinthe

Posted by BOSSHOGG
Heh! Absin, you're just spouting random numbers :-D

Posted by Miss UK

Posted by mince-inside
Better than starting random threads or making random posts

PS am I allowed here then?

Posted by scotsboyuk
@miss uk

That makes you a Scot!

Posted by absinthebri
I think there's a lot of people WISH they were Scottish! Probably.

Posted by scotsboyuk
Does anyone else get annoyed when non-Scots refer to us as 'Scotch'?

Posted by absinthebri
Yeah, Scotch is a drink!

Posted by Miss UK
Lo.. I might live in brum but so glad ive not picked up there accent (so howard halifax) here :-p

Posted by BOSSHOGG
Doesn't annoy me, what does annoy me is english people not understanding a word that comes out my mouth on the phone, yet i can easily make out what they're saying, pretty much regardless of where they come from.

Equal to that when people find out you're based in Scotland and they feel compelled to say "Is it cold up there today" (like were sooo much closer to the north pole) or "Och aye the nooo" (Other than Stanley Baxter I've never heard anyone up here say it!)

Posted by scotsboyuk
@absin

A rather nice drink at that, in fact I think I shall jolly well have one.

Posted by methylated_spirit
Well gang, at least here, when someone asks where im from, i can say "im from kilmarnock" and people will go "oh, right" instead of the usual blank reply of "never heard of it, is it norf?"

Posted by absinthebri
I'm partial to the very occasional wee dram myself.

Posted by harvey172
cool i luv the scottish people! and scotland itself. waa hay

Posted by scotsboyuk
@BOSSHOGG

To be fair, Scots, especially those of us from the West, have a tendency to speak rather quickly, which can be difficult to understand. It is even more difficult if someone has a strong accent.

English people, more so in the South, speak more slowly. Having said that, if you are speaking with someone who has a heavy regional accent, from anywhere in the UK, it can be hard to make out what they are saying.

Posted by absinthebri
Or to give its full name meths, Kilmarnocknil!

Posted by Miss UK
When I was at skool growing up south just shows kids were cruel i was the object of the class :-( ain't nice.. Well im beat time for bed roll on friday :-l

Posted by scotsboyuk
@harvey172

Where in Northern Ireland are you from?

Saying that, some scottish people have trouble figuring out what i'm saying :-D

Posted by absinthebri
Night, Kerry! You're my favourite Scottish gurrrl on the whole of Esato!

Posted by scotsboyuk
@BOSSHOGG

Scotland has a wealth of accents, it isn't always easy to understand fellow Scots. Of course some Scots don't even speak English, making it all but impossible to understand them!

Posted by methylated_spirit
In my old job, i dealt with a lot of customers. A conversation like this would go on 4 times a day....

"Can i speak to the gentleman that phoned me earlier?"

"certianly, who was it you were speaking to?"

"Dunno, he was scottish...was it you?"

That outruled the german woman in accounts, then.

"Theres quite a few scots work here, are you sure you dont remember a name?"

"REALLY?!?! How come theres so many scots?"

"We are in Scotland"

"Wow thats amazing...bet its cold where you are"

"No."

"How do you get my stuff all the way down here so quickly? Its AMAZING"

Customer is in Liverpool...

"Courier, its a UK next day service"

"wow, they must be good, shipping all the way from scotland to the uk that quickly. Anyway, can i speak to the scottish bloke?"

Posted by Superluminova
Some glaswegians are completely understandable! and i often find myself using several different styles of speech at work delling with customers,

i can go from being a non educated delinquent to a very well spoke young man, within seconds, lol the joys of the scots accent!

Posted by mince-inside
The only accent I have bother with is the Aberdonian's esp. Fraserburgh and Peterhead - got clients up there and I'm the only one in the office who can understand them!

Posted by scotsboyuk
@mince

Being bored one evening I switched on the television and was greeted with an overly familiar half hour of nonsense, otherwise known as River City. The Aberdonian woman on that has a very strong accent, which isn't helped very much by the fact that the producers have obviously decided that the best way to attract viewers is to allow her to use Aberdonian slang so as to make her incomprehensible to the majority of the population, thus disguising the awful dialogue.

Posted by methylated_spirit
Yeah i can go from broad ayrshire to accentless in less time than it takes to say "Jimmy Crankie!" because people just dont understand....aberdeen is one i have a little trouble with..."fitrezit? Furrybootsyagawinneeber?"

Posted by mince-inside
Never heard of River City (guess it's Glasgow based) thanks for the warning if I were ever to stumble upon it.

Posted by scotsboyuk
@mince

You're not missing much!
