Ok...here are the facts :

4k SIM's-> Older SIM's Capable of GPRS, EDGE, CSD, HSCSD etc. Basically everything 2g and 2.5g. 60 Contacts, 5 SMS's

16k SIM's: Old, but not too old, Capable of everything the 4k can do, but has 150 Contacts and 10 SMS's and SIM Service's.

32k SIM's : Like wise with 250 contacts and 10 messages and Enhanced SIM services.

64k and 128k SIM's : more enhanced then even 32k

U-SIM's : Only CDMA and WCDMA. Have 1xRTT and UMTS data.

Hope everything is clear now.

I have 250 contacts and 20 sms available on my SIM. That's standard here in Estonia. When the GSM started, in the 90's, we had the older version with about half the capacity. I don't see how different SIM cards are related to having wap or gprs, the SIM is only there to identify you on the network (and perhaps to store the most important contacts). All the settings for GPRS, WAP and MMS are on the phone. At least that's how it is in Estonia.

@Draqula how "k" have u sim?

If Debu's assertions are right, I owe everyone here an apology for touting falsehood. I got my submissions from an article on mobile services in a publication. Guess that casts a shadow on the credibility of that publication...

How to check that? The only thing I know about my SIM is, that it can have max 250 contacts and max 20 SMS.

Posted by lenn24
allright is of 32kb

Posted by lenn24
@Draqula sure?

Posted by Draqula
@lenn

Sure about what?

I'm sure that it can hold 250 contacts and 20 sms. I no nothing of "k". At first those SIM's with 250 contacts and 20 sms were called "Gold SIM card", but now they're standard issue.

In the middle of 2003 new SIM cards appeared with "SIM Toolkit", they are informative menus (works by automated sms send-receive) I can customize some of them over the internet. You only get charged for the last last sms, which contains information. It appears as an extra menu in the nokia menu list and in SE phones it shows up in the communication settings menu.

@aya: Please, no cause to be hasseled. Often the information provided to us by our service providers is misleading and more often then not incorrect. We very much appreciated your input.

thanks debu for that. Yes, len, dracula has a 32k sim.

My sim is an oldie, 120 contacts, 13 contacts in fixed dialing and 13 sms. It is 16k i suposse. But thats not that important as recent handsets have their one large memory for this data.

A little further investigation into this topic, now has revealed that there is no hard and fast rule, as to how many contacts and sms's the sim card has. Each operator has to set a balance between Contacts, SMS, SIM Services (Operator Menu), and Service Settings.

For example I just got my hands on this 16k sim card (digi-prepaid, singapore) which has only 120 contacts, 5 sms's, SIM menu and DigiSurf settings built in.
