WAP Browser Speeds

Using a P800 (with all its glory), I naturally expected the WAP browser to outperform those of other phones considered inferior. I was wrong

Testing a TelMe T919 recently, it was a surprise to find that the T919 browser significantly outdid the P800 in response time, loading pages faster than the P800's. My old T230 (which was just about at par with the M55) was however slower in loading WAP pages than the P800.

What has been your experience with the speed of your WAP browsers? What's the fastest WAP browser you have used?

Out of the phones I've used/owned (t300, t610, k500i), the k500i outdid the other two easily (using the same Vodafone - I know, Vodafone eww - simcard).

My T230's browser is giving of excellent speeds. But i have noticed that some Nokia default browsers are very slow compared to that of my T230.

I recently tested WAP on T630 and 3100 (at different times, but same SIM), and found their speeds to be ok. The more browsers I test, the more frustrated I get with my P800's browser speed.

p800 was released quite a while back though wasnt it? perhaps that explains the sluggish performance.

AYA, can't you use opera in your P800? IT IS REALLY FAST!

Posted by OluYom
@geraldsalvador: Maybe. But the T919 is an old witch too, WAP 1.2.1 for that matter. Probably the slowest WAP browser I ever attempted is that of the Nokia 6800. Took ages to load anything.

But can opera be used to surf wap sites? Or only html ones? I'm not sure.

Posted by OluYom
@whizkidd: Sure I can, and I have, but only via CSD, as what I have is a GPRS WAP account. But that is BTW. I am just interested in comparing the performance of various WAP browsers. Thanks

Plus, Opera wont load WAP pages. Just HTML.

My T610 is so fast that it can sweep its own goods to show me a white post.

Posted by OluYom
@Pradhika: Yeah, I noticed that on a couple of posts you did :-D. That, my friend, is some browser you have there.

Posted by whizkidd
Oh sorry for that! Only default browsers! :-D

Interesting, but the Samsung X100 Openwave browser was a joy to use, IMO. And I generally do not like Samsungs :-) Just imagine.

Posted by whizkidd
Samsung and their gprs browsers have never worked right with me. I tried to connect to the net using a C100, and was left fuming. I entered all the required settings correctly, but the thing won't work!

Posted by Pradhika
I too had a t230 ok. It will be still good if whizz can have 61:-D

Posted by OluYom
@whizkidd: Someone recently complained about connecting with the C100. Had no prblems at all browsing with the X100.

Posted by whizkidd
I have never used the t610. So can't comment about its browser. But the P900, yes!

Guys, now this will sound unbelievable, but the most responsive WAP brwser I ever used was on the Alcatel 311 (and it wasnt even a GPRS phone). Yes, that small phone with amber backlighting. Unfortunately, I havent used an Alcatel in recent times, so cant tell if they carried on in that line.

Posted by whizkidd
But that was dial up wap rite?

Posted by OluYom
@whizkidd: Yup. DialUp.

@whizkidd: I just read the Opera browser review on esato, and it mentions that it supports WML & xHTML, which are both WAP protocols. Does that mean Opera supports WAP? I'll check Opera's web site for more info.

Meanwhile, I am signing up for an Internet GPRS account this week. Its just fruistrating not being able to take maximum advantage of my P800's connectivity features.

the fastest wap browser i've ever used was the trium mars and geo.anyone who owned one will no doubt confirm this.the slowest browser i used was probably the t68i...not sure though.

Guys, I had a braiwave and boy! I emptied my P800 browser cache, then reduced the size from 847kb to 15kb. Now my WAP browser is blazing fast!!!! Like 3 times faster what its been :-)

Posted by govigov
Good for you Aya. Btw whiz, csd stands for circuit switched data.

Posted by whizkidd
I always randomly keep on clearing the cache. Didn't have such a dramatic increase in prefer though!

Posted by govigov
Never cleared the cache.

Posted by whizkidd
Try it. Might increase the browsing speed.

Posted by OluYom
Almost unbelievable. Average esato page used to load like 19-24 seconds; now loads 3-5 seconds. What do you call that?

Posted by govigov
my average is now 5 to 7 and am quiet satisfied. Reply comes up in less than 1 sec.

Posted by whizkidd
Nokia default browsers really suck. Full of wierd bugs.

Posted by Jake Blues
im gonna try decreasing the cache, i always kept it on max (1000kb).

the fastest wap browser i used was on the t300.

Posted by OluYom
Dunno, but maybe when you have a large (and filled) cache, the browser has to compare whatz in there with the new stuff before loading a page... or something like that.

Posted by govigov
agreed. Nokia browser totally sucks.
