Its not what i expected from apple but its ok i suppose!

Posted by themarques
I think its a bit of a dissapointment...instead of moving forward and trying to get video on those ipods they seem to be going back and trying to live on the glory days...

Posted by k4m!k4ze
i guess they're catering to the people who cant afford the costlier ones

Posted by Jools
I must say I'm disappointed it has no screen...

Posted by axxxr
Yes apple did make a huge mistake by not adding a screen;it would have made all the difference.

Posted by JiggyJaggy
Is this available for sale in the UK?

Posted by Jools
Of course... well, it ships in about 2 weeks...

I dont know if I can justify £100 for 1Gb and no screen..

Posted by Superluminova
here are so realtime pictures,

Does anyone know if it can be used as a usb drive for data etc?

Posted by JiggyJaggy
Yeah it says somewhere on the site that its 1GB = 240 tracks or use it as data and you can choose using the software how much of the disk space you want for data, and how much for music.

I just ordered one and should be here in 3 days!

Posted by Superluminova

In other iPod news, Apple announced it has teamed up with Mercedes-Benz USA, Volvo, Nissan, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari to deliver iPod integration with their car stereo systems in 2005. The iPod Integration Kit for Mercedes-Benz will debut this April in the US with the newly redesigned 2006 Mercedes-Benz M-Class.

Volvo’s two iPod connectivity options for their entire 2005 US model line allow iPod users to listen to their entire music collection through their Volvo audio system. The Volvo iPod Adapter will be available for S60, S80 and V70/XC70 models and will connect by simply plugging the iPod into a cable located in the car’s glove compartment, while S40, V50 and XC90 owners can use a dashboard mounted FM transmitter. The Volvo iPod Adapter allows users to control their music through their Volvo sound system and steering wheel controls, and both options charge the iPod when plugged in.

Nissan, Alfa Romeo and Ferrari will announce details of their iPod integration solutions later this year, allowing customers to enjoy high-quality sound through their car’s stereo system, easily access their entire music library and control their iPod using their car’s standard controls. These companies join BMW and MINI Cooper who began providing integrated iPod solutions in 2004.

Meanwhile, Jobs reported that Apple sold 4.5 million iPods this past holiday quarter of 2004 as compared to the 733,000 sold at the same time in 2003. Ten million iPods have been sold to date, with 8.2 million of them sold in 2004.

What more do apple want? How much does an ipod cost? (The original one?)

Posted by Jools
Check out the prices at your local online Apple Store.

For you this is: http://www.asia.apple.com/store/india/

They don't have prices for the iPod shuffle yet, and if you're on WAP you won't be able to view it!

iPod mini is INR 19,500
iPod is INR 21,500
iPod photo is INR 34,100

is the iPod shuffle plug and paly? or does it need iTune to work on a mac/pc?

Posted by Jools
It's plug 'n' play in so much as it just plugs straight in to a USB port. No drivers etc. needed.

But you use iTunes to sync/manage your music as the new iTunes has new features especially for iPod shuffle:

http://www.apple.com/ipodshuffle/shuffle.html

iTunes automatically fills it with your best/favourite tunes, or from a pre-chosen Playlist. Also in iTunes you set the amount of space allocated to data/music.

iTunes is by far the best music player/manager anyway!

who thinks they'll bring out a 2GB version.

Posted by Jools
It's already been rumoured that they will... but I guess it won't be until the cost of Flash memory comes down even more...

At current prices, a 2GB model would probably be priced about the same as an iPod mini, which has twice as much storage (4GB). So I guess most people would choose an iPod mini instead... especially as it also has a screen, click wheel etc.

512mb iPod shuffle = $99
1GB iPod shuffle = $149
1.5GB iPod shuffle = $199 (possibly?)
2GB iPod shuffle = $249 (possibly?)
4GB iPod mini = $249

@ JoolsG4 you the MAC mac! I ordered my suffle from a friend in the US, should have it in 2-3 days UPS. Will post a review when im done!

Posted by p900 lover
i dont really understand why anyone would buy that thing.
it hasnt got a screen, only 240 song

i could get a cheaper 1gig MS and put it into my p900 (yes i no i would have to put a p910 fw on it) and use it in my fone AND have a screen

i mean goin from a blue screen to a color screen then to NO screen is crazy, even something small.

im not having a go at apple, i love most of the product and designe and even own a ipod photo,

Posted by Jools
The people who would buy it are the people who can't afford $249 for the cheapest HD-based iPod...

And I guess some people are satisfied with just 240 songs...

Posted by SE Rules
I'm sorry, but I've always considered Apple to be pretty good when it comes to advancing technology, but, is this progression or just plain regression...... With the deals on Amazon for normal iPods, I'd just stick with the normal iPod.

Posted by p900 lover
i understand the $$$ issue, but only 240 song????

Posted by Jools
Yeah, I know what you mean... 240 songs doesn't sound much, especially compared to my 40GB iPod photo which can store 10000!!

But 240 songs is approximately 17-20 CD albums (average of 12-14 tracks per CD) which is more than enough for any car/plane journey, or even a week in the sun!

I guess Apple are anticipating people just carrying around a sub-set of their music collection with them, rather than the whole lot.

For that purpose its not so bad...

Personally, though, I'll stick with my iPod photo (although I might buy my fiancee one).

Posted by Superluminova
I love my ipod photo, but this be bought, i was gonna get a micro vault for moving data about, but this jumped to the top of my wish list

Posted by peeta
personally i only have a few albums i listen to over any period of time. i mean its nice to know that if you fancy listening to a song that i haven't listened to in years its there but 17 albums is more than enough for the number of albums i listen to regularly.

I don't understand you lot. The Shuffle isn't meant to be the next step up, or to improve on what's already here. It's to fill a gap in the market that they don't already have, i.e. people who don't have rooms full of music, who want the iPod but don't have a lot of money, parents whose kids are nagging them for an iPod but refuse to spend £300 on something that a 10 year old is likely to leave on the bus.

It's not rocket science, it's a little gadget that plays a bit of music. Start adding playlists, radios, screens, blah blah and you up the price when the whole point is to keep the price down. You also make something more complicated than it needs to be. In all honesty what good is the screen? One line of tiny writing that tells you which track you're listening to when the first few bars will tell you that. I won't be mourning its absence.

I have 2 iPods and I will still be buying a Shuffle. It's tiny and great for when I am out and want music but haven't got a bag with me as it's a little bulky for a pocket if you're a girl and have enough lumps and bumps as it is.

If there is enough of a market for video etc (though why you would want it on an iPod sized screen that's going to eat power like there's no tomorrow I don't quite know) then I am sure, given time Steve will provide it.

In the meantime I intend to love it for what it is!

I've never been tempted by the iPod as my music collection isn't that big, but I might be tempted to get a Shuffle as it's a damn sight cheaper than a full size iPod, smaller and lighter, and obviously a quality product. I agree with Gooner Girl on this one.

I bought a cheap 128mb USB mp3 player but don't use it, bit too cheap and cheerful will probably just use that for storage, but I could quite easily get into an iPod shuffle!

When are these been released, and is there confirmation of UK prices yet?

Posted by batesie
well said gooner girl.

I'd get one if they had different colours....

Posted by Gooner Girl
Sammy, it's due to hit the UK in a couple of weeks priced at £69 for the 512MB and £99 for the 1GB.

I'm trying not to order it online as I really want to go to the new Regent Street store but have been putting it off because I couldn't face going there and not buying anything!

And colours would have been good, I admit!

Posted by Sammy_boy
I am really quite tempted by this, I somehow have managed not to get into all this mp3 stuff, I tend to listen to the radio more than anything (I get bored easily listening to the same old songs, so can't listen to the same CD over and over like some people can!)

This means then that I'd have to convert what CDs I do have to mp3 format on my pc, and start buying them from sites like itunes (not into these filesharing sites, full of spyware). Shame I don't have any money at the moment, just bought a new hifi!

btw do iPods (and the Shuffle) come with software for converting songe to mp3/amr/etc. format?

Posted by Jools
All iPods come with iTunes, the best MP3/AAC encoder and music manager.

In fact, you can get a free copy from Apple's site here so you can have a play around with it before buying an iPod.

It's a great example of Apple's legendary ease-of-use...

BTW, its best to encode your music into AAC format with iTunes as that format is better quality than MP3 at the same bitrate. Also, tunes bought from the iTunes Music Store are in this format. The quoted song capacity of all iPods is based on 128kbps AAC files - the iTunes default.

Posted by batesie
whats the highest quality aac that itunes can convert to?
most of my mp3's are 320kbps or 256kbps.

Posted by Jools
320kbps, but as AAC is higher quality than MP3 you don't have to encode at 320kbps to get as good quality as a 320kbps MP3.

If you are ripping from CD to use in iTunes or an iPod, better to encode in AAC format.

If you have existing 320kbps MP3's then there's not much point converting to the same bitrate AAC. The quality might even suffer because you are re-compressing an already compressed file.

However, I sometimes convert 320kbps MP3's to 128kbps AAC and to my untrained ears they sound identically... saves a bit of disk space that's all.

@jools - thanks. when using sony mdr71's, there is no difference between a 128kbps and a 256kbps mp3.
But when i use my Sennheiser HD25's i need a better quality recording.

i recorded most of my CD collection @320kbps so i could convert them to OGG's for my P900 or to ATRAC for my minidisc.
Thing is, on an iPod shuffle 1Gb, i'll only be able to fit >100 mp3's in that quality.

i've got itunes but never used it. i'll give it a go tonight

Hey guys!!! I just got my shuffle via courir just now...

Its so small and so simple. Just waiting for Itunes 3.8 to download so I can download some tunes to it! I only know of two others who physically have a Shuffle in their hands already

Hope you guys like them!

Posted by Jools
Where did you buy yours from?

Posted by JiggyJaggy
From the US, my friend picked 3 up for me. Any takers?

Not to detract and turn this into a sellers market, people can PM me if they want one.

They are much smaller than I though and more importantly very light. You cant feel it round your neck.
