It took me long enough to figure this lot out, so I thought I'd share...
To get
(i) WAP on a T68i over GPRS
(ii) email over GPRS
(iii) Internet access using a T68i as a GRPS modem
on Orange you need to set up three GPRS data accounts
(i) T68i WAP set up over GPRS – to access WAP content on a T68i using GPRS
-> Data Accounts and create a data account, giving it the name “Orange WAP GPRS”
Apply the following settings:
APN=orangewap
User id =
Password=
Password request = off
Allow calls= automatic
IP address = …
DNS Address = …
Advanced settings:
- Authentication=none
- Data compr=off
- Header compr=off
- Quality of service = [for allsub menu items] subscribed
-> WAP Services/Options
Add profile = Orange GPRS
Connect using=Orange WAP GPRS
IP address = 192.168.071.035
User id = Orange (case sensitive, apparently)
Password = Multimedia (case sensitive, apparently)
Data mode = Conn oriented
Security = off
Show pictures = on
Response timer = 150 sec
(ii) Email data account – to access email (sent to any of your email addresses) using GPRS, create a new data account on the phone called “Orange email GPRS” and apply the following settings
APN=orangeinternet
User id =orange
Password=
Password request = off
Allow calls= automatic
IP address = …
DNS Address = 158.43.192.1
Advanced settings:
- Authentication=normal
- Data compr=on
- Header compr=on
- Quality of service
o Precedence = subscribed
o Delay = subscribed
o Reliability = class 3
o Peak rate = subscribed
o Mean rate = subscribed
On the phone, under Messages/email/options, create a new email account (say) called John Virgin. Apply the following settings:
Connect using = Orange email GPRS (or the name given to this data account)
Protocol = POP3
Inc server = the IP address for your incoming server. For example, virgin.net email accounts use pop.virgin.net. To get the IP address, in Windows go to Start/Run and type CMD. In the DOS window, type ping pop.virgin.net. The IP address will be displayed.
Incoming port = 110 (for virgin.net. You can usually find this tucked away in Outlook or OE under Tools/something)
Mailbox = usually the part of your email address before the @. This may vary between ISPs
Password = the password needed to access your email account. Usually in Outlook or OE as a series of ******, so you’ll need to know this
Outgoing server = the IP address for your outgoing server. Virgin.net email accounts use smtp.virgin.net. Follow the instructions above to get the IP address
Outgoing port = 25 (again, for virgin.net. See above to check this for other ISPs)
Email address = your email address
Download = Headers & text, unless you only want headers
From Name = the name you want your outgoing messages to appear to be from
Signature = No signature
Copy outgoing = on
Check interval = as desired.
You can create as many email accounts as you have email addresses, but you can only download from one at a time.
Create a new data account on the phone called “Orange Internet GPRS” and apply the following settings (I haven’t tried adjusting the settings to the Orange email GPRS account to see if I can use one account for both this and (ii) above).

Create a new dial up connection in Windows, using “*99***[x]#” as the dial number, where “[x]” is replaced by the CID number for this account. So if CID = 3 for this account, the dial number is “*99***3#”. Ensure that you have selected the correct modem (ie IR or BT or cable). To connect, double click on the dial up connection. Do not enter a password or user name when prompted by Windows. Generally I find using a mobile as a modem more reliable if I establish the connection, then fire up my browser, rather than firing up the browser and relying on that to establish the connection.
