Anyone here used the Nokia 9300 Communicator? If yes, I need to know how well it performs, pros, cons, et al. Please be objective & detailed in your responses (posts like \"Crap phone\" dont tell anything). Thanks.

try google... there are many reviews to be found on the www

Posted by Flying Finn
I dont think there can be too many reviews on it yet but you should check out some 9500 reviews becuse its identical to the 9300 minus the camera, wifi and physical size.

Posted by OluYom
Thanks guys :) Seen some reviews (incl. 9500) on the Web. Was only hoping I could find someone who owns one so I can "cross-examine". Anyone?

Posted by Flying Finn
I doubt anyone here has one since it won't hit the stores until march probably.

Posted by OluYom
I imagine that too. Well, I am looking forward to laying my hands on one ASAP. Waited long & hard for nok to put GPRS capability on a cmmunicator. 9500 is okay, but dont need the camera, so why pay for one?

Posted by brym!
You have the option to use or not to use the camera.

Posted by OluYom
@brym! I have the option to pay or not to pay for an extra I definitely do not need and will not use :) I choose not to pay.

Posted by brym!
I guess that leaves you with the 9300(sans WI-FI).

@flying finn - So do you think that the Nokia 9300 Communicator is 'just' an inferior representation of the 9500 Thanks!

Posted by Flying Finn
I think with this version of the Communicator Nokia also wanted to consider "the other" people in business world, who aren't allowed to have a digital camera at their workplace. In some occasions camera phones have been used for industrial spying and therefore banned.

If you aren't in that user group, you can still enjoy a smaller, yet nearly as capable a Communicator as its big brother.

I have used my friends 9300 for a day, the phone is good, espically the keyboard...its so easy to type but the screen sucks its lengthy...hence very difficult to browse HTML sites as you have to scroll each and every time to see a image. WAP is faster imo..although I have not used p910 so cant compare between these two, but the phone is good in all terms and also small in size

Posted by OluYom
@JN: Not inferior, just without some features on the 9500 that are not vital to business. Until proven otherwise, it should be safe to say the performance of both are similar. @vineet: Thanks, some real stuff at last. That screen has always been an issue with the Communicator series, I believe.

@ Vineet_d.. If i am not mistaking u r from mumbai and 9300 is yet to be available here.
If your friend has it, can u write where he bought it from so that i can also buy one

There's a 9300 review now at mobile-review:

http://www.mobile-review.com/review/nokia-9300-en.shtml

It's only about the phone mode, they say the next part will focus on the PDA side.

Posted by OluYom
@finn: Thanks pal. Checked mobile-review earlier in the evening and the review wasnt there yet. I'll look it up. Thanks again.

does anyone know the projected price range?

Posted by OluYom
@milmino: No idea at this time. But guys, I got a lowdown on the Moto MPx today... and now my heart seems to have been stolen. But, we have to wait and see... :)

Posted by Flying Finn
In Europe, prices will start from 640 euros (unlocked phones).

We have a CDMA2000 1x network here now offering data cards allowing you to access data/internet on their platform in connectivity with your laptop. Unfortunately, the acquisition cost is on the high end. Would have loved to explore that.

I initially wanted the 9210i, but the ack of GPRS was a big problem. I also aint tripped about cameras on phones. Now here is a communicator with GPRS and more, and without a camera! Dreams come true, you know!

Posted by Super G
've had one for a few months. This is the ultimate mobile gadget at the moment
I used to have some old communicator some time ago, which I happily left home/at the office due to its size. Now with the 9300, this burden is gone. it fits in my pocket without problem. It's light, looks smart and most importantly very powerful.

No WLAN, no camera. But this is quickly forgiven!

The screens are excellent and nothing to compare to the old 9210(i). Of course the PDA screen is best. Vivid colors, very good contrast and brightness even in daylight (Try and read a MPx in daylight
Tactile feedback of the keyboard is very good.
The joystick is very practical in the webbrowser etc (one can regret there is no such alternative for the Presentations (powerpoint) application though), and it works like a dream (takes a little while to get used to it though)
Email works perfectly, also you can view/edit etc the attachments.
Etc etc. Its nearly impossible to list everything.

Installation/removal of applications, file transfers etc work like a dream with PC Suite. And it's also as though it was made for dummies It couldnt be easier.

EDGE support is noticeably a big plus. Will offer you a much better browsing/email experience wherever EGPRS is on (that is in many many many countries).

Few bad points though:
> No T9 on the phone side of the communicator. Then again, why would you use T9, when you can simply open the beast and write it on a full comfortable keyboard?
> Accepting a Bluetooth connection requires to open the communicator (no shortcut through the phone side)
> A bit slow at times

So in short: I strongly recommend that one!! (if e.g. you had a 9210, you will be very impressed
If you want a mobile office that does fit in your pocket, then this is the one to go for. If you want WLAN and a camera, consider the noticeably bigger 9500.

Posted by OluYom
@Super G: Thanks for the review. Sounds like the 9300 remains strongest contender to replace my P800. Would have jumped for WLAN, but not exactly essential. Definitely dont need a camera; just a mobile office. Thanks again :)

Well, having gone from drooling over the MPx , the 9500 and also weighing the possibility of a 2-device solution.. and all that, I have chosen to settle for the 9300.

My unit should arrive in the next couple of weeks and I'll be able to tell you how it goes. Thanks for everything guys and gals

@aya: I'm sure you'll like it man, if only for the tremendously large application support the series 80 has, indeed much larger then the UIQ. I love mine because:
1) EDGE (very fast connectivity)
2) Sooo much software available.
3) Coolness factor (sure to make heads turn )

Posted by OluYom
@debu: not to mention the convenience of packing all that functionality in a unit the size of a 6310i

Have been using a 9300 for 1 week now. The form factor is EXCELLANT. I've used stylus based devices before but 9300, though keyboard based, is NOT hard to get used to. I dont miss the stylus at all. Battery life so far is FAR FAR better than similar devices like P910.

It was great listening to MP3s while browsing or working with word documents on the way back home from work in cab; something that I didnt quite like with stylus based devices.

@debu: Thanks for further reinforcing my decision. Good to hear more positive feedback :-)

AYA, are you dropping out of the SE bandwagon?

Pocket PC has the biggest application support.
unless you cant use a stylus and need a keyboard, get a P910 or iMate Jam

Posted by OluYom
@batesie: You are right on the spot about that. And yes, I do need a keyboard over and above a stylus. That is one key factor that influenced my decision.

Posted by batesie
i still think that the stylus is just as quick as the keyboard.
i had a 9500 for a week or so, and my boss has a 9300. still to big and no wifi and it just falls open, no clasp to keep it closed.

Posted by OluYom
@batesie: I have used the p800 for about 8 months now and I am certain that the stylus does not cut it for me. Having used other keyboard devices, I am convinced the 9300 is the gadget for me :-)

Posted by Super G
@ batesie

Then maybe you should actually use a 9300.
It does NOT fall open.
There is some magnetic whatyamacallit on both sides (PDA screen and keyboard) keeping the beast closed.

As to stylus vs keyboard for writing emails etc, a comfy keyboard (such as on 9300) is clearly much faster. Of course you cant compare that with the P910 keyboard...

Clearly comparing 9300 vs P910(i), 9300 wins for whoever wants a tiny mobile office. It is also the world's fastest mobile office (alongside the 9500). Its as simple as that.

The 9500 Communicator still tops the Nokia 9000 fone series . . .

Posted by govigov
Since you guys are all praise, may be i should give a 2nd shot and see how it feels.

Posted by OluYom
@govi: What do you mean by 2nd shot? Have you played with the 9300 before?

Posted by *Jojo*
The Nokia 9300 can be matched with that of the P900 fone model
