MTNL India has never been a favourite choice for Indian mobile phone users who need more than just phone calls and SMSes. The reason has been absence of WAP services on MTNL.
This is all to change, though not how we would expect it to. MTNL is bypassing GPRS, and is going straight for 3G. By the start of 2006, MTNL hopes to have the best 3G system in place in India.
15 more months....then bye bye Hutch, Airtel, Idea etc ??

I think by 2006. The others too will launch 3g services.

I agree. But couple that with the low rates MTNL offer for calls and SMSes, I think it will really boost the MTNL subscriber base.
I mean, Iam currently on Hutch. But if MTNL started offering GPRS now, I would shift over very quickly.

@neonw : dude, EDGE is a subset of 3G services. so if i'm not mistaken, Most service providers are ready for 3G, they are just waiting for TRAI to release licences for using 3G. TRAI is not ready for letting 3G/UMTS to india as yet.

I'm not so sure about EDGE being a subset of 3G. There are handsets out there which support EDGE but not 3G.

Same MTNL will find a way to take care of other NWs.
