wow cool.
thanks

assuming you are using the web to reply, then just under where you type the text of your reply you can click the word smilies to see the list of smilies that bianca just posted

even better.
you might as well lock this thread now that i have the relevant info

when members join, not only should they read the forum rules (which hardly any one ever does IMHO), they should also take the time to explore the wealth of features provided by laffen.

eveyone is in such a rush to get their posts posted

That wuld b me ;nP lol

@masseur

you could tighten the measures a little bit - prepare some basic faq´s as general terms and conditions and let new users have to check a click box after each question / point to assure they read it (maybe a little quiz on the end?) before they 'enter the arena'.

unless you won´t demand this of me with hindsight

i think part of the problem is that the smilies/bb code page isn't linked to either the faq or sitemap which are accessible via the homepage, because there is a distinction between website faq (via the homepage) and forums faq (via the smilies link).

perhaps adding the forum faq to the sitemap would be helpful?

I'm a bit puzzeled as of how people actually can miss it.

Posted by gelfen
i don't think people necessarily miss the link, but it's not immediately obvious to the casual eye what that link does.

for instance, the "Attach Picture" link is self explanatory. The term "Smiley Codes" or "View Smilies" would probably be more easily comprehended by the uninitiated. Same for "BBCode"

@Gelfen
Very good point you make there.
I've never thought of it like that. I guess it's "esay when you know how".
(Sorry for my ignorance.)

I disagree, whenever I see a link I assume the link will take me to a page that gives more information about the topic described by the words used in the link

this is normal web practice isn't it?

in this case I would expect to see more details about bbcode or smilies and my natural hope in a well designed site is that by clicking those I would get info on how to use them, or am I being too pragmatic

Not at all masseur

the link 'smilies' takes you to the smilies.... it's really the most basic understanding of linking imho
Nobody could get that wrong.

I suspect people simply never look at the 4 checkboxes to see what they do in the first place

agreed, bringing me back to me earlier point

When I join a new site I always take a little time to explore what the site is offering me before I start posting so that I can make best use of the site.

Its the same with anything really, when I join a new flying club I sit in the planes that I am not familiar with and learn where all the buttons are, when I get a new phone I spend time exploring it, when I meet a new girl I spend time exploring etc etc (ok so thats been a long time since I'm married 16 years now but it gives the point )

I quite agree with @gelfen here - totally now - I guess!
@masseur - Not everyone is as 'well-rounded' as you mate . . . me included!

@vanquish - she can 'confront' even Tony Blair or Osama Bin Laden upfront and personal Just kiddo here - Vlammmetje !

@mass: i see where you're coming from, but i don't think everyone necessarily has the time or temprement to click every hyperlink they come accross on a website just to see what it does.

when i first joined i only knew about the smiley and bb codes from having seen a direct link posted in a thread. when i went to look for it later i remembered that the url had "faq" tacked on the end and so, understandably, that's where i looked first - to my disappointment. it was only after hunting through the main pages that i came across the link i needed on the reply page. i'm not saying the average net user couldn't work it out eventually, but IMO there are more obvious ways to provide that link - such as in the FAQ page - for people without such an explorative streak or general web experience.
