T39m eMail Client Behavior Information

I have been doing lots of testing to determine the specific POP3/SMTP behavior of the Ericsson eMail client (T39m in my case but the T68 client should be pretty much the same) and have found the following interesting behavior:

1) Every time the client connects to the POP server, it *always* downloads all of the message subjects in your mailbox. The client makes no attempt to synchronize its message list with that of your POP mailbox. If you have a lot of undeleted messages in your POP mailbox, every "check for new mail" operation will take a *lot* of time.

2) The client always does a POP login whenever it connects, even if it is only sending an SMTP message. This allows mail servers that support SMTP "POP before SMTP" pseudo-authentication to function. The client does not support SMTP AUTH but at least "POP before SMTP" allows your SMTP server to utilize some type of access control.

2) The client always tries an "APOP" command before a "POP" command when it tries to login to your POP server. For POP3 servers that don't support "APOP", this means that logging in takes a lot more time than those that support "APOP" (1 command vs. 3).
