Hi,
just wanted to know how and what to say to pass a credit check? I will be 19 in a few weeks time (also i'm a student), and wanted to know that if you dont have a credit history what options do you have?
I have used the search options and noticed that if someone has a poor credit history or doesnt have one, then there is the option of leaving a deposit: 50 pounds - 100 or 150. Does that mean everyone should be accepted (i dont have no bad debts nor do i owe anyone or any company any money), but they will have to leave a deposit.
This leads on to my next question: where does this deposit go, will be credited to my bills or will it just be refunded to me at the end of the year?
Also, i think i remember someone telling me something about being able to pay for the whole years line rental in advance - will there be some sort of discount if this method is taken?
Thanks in advance for reading the thread and hope someone can help

P.S is there anyway that the person instore could do something ...cough... something to pass it through ?

If you fail a credit check you fail... Simple as that... You can't bribe someone to pass you anyways??

Posted by p1000man
@Burgaz: thanks for your quick reply, yes of course if you fail you fail, but i have yet to try and go for the credit check in the first place....
I dont mean a bribe, i mean a lie: (though thats kind of the same thing ?!?) as in tick the box for full time employment rather than student/part time - nothing too serious...

I would prefer a reply from someone who works within a mobile phone store as they would probably know best the requirements needed to pass...

when i started out with an o2 contract i had no personal credit history. the year before i was turned down for a Burton store card. but i was able to get an o2 contract very easily. at the time all i required was a debit card for proof of identity. ( now you require 2 forms of ID like all the other phone shops).
get your phone from an o2 shop as they are not as strick as Carphone Warehouse.
Phones4u might require a deposit as it happened with my mate but he got it back agin in 6months as a cheque. but they gave him nothing but trouble with phone break downs, mms activation and call credit limits, their customer service is terrible.

hope this answers been a little help,
Owen

thanks for your reply owen mate. Yeah, thats kind of the same boat that i am in: I too think i dont have no credit history, but have been paying for my contact lens and gym membership (25 pounds and 50 pounds) by direct debit for the past 6-9 months (gym membership stopped as of last month as uni gym is cheaper).
I will give it a go tomorrow anyway, and if i fail i'll get a friend to take out the contract and give them the cash for the whole years line rental.

If anyone has the best way to pass but would rather not reveal it to EVERYONE then you can PM me

@Owen: i dont have a problem with forms of ID, i'll show my passport and switch/maestro card and also my bank statement. The paperwork is all legit, just dont think they'll pass me as i dont tend to work much(as in my employment history), but wouldnt offering to pay a high deposit or all the line rental cover this problem???

i was also a student at the time and only worked 2 months in the summer.

Some stores, especially if you are in a student friendly town or area welcome students and give you student only offers (not all the time, say maybe when its a slow month and they put the offer on for a weeks or so.

Come to think of it a mate of mine was refused at phones4u but accepted by orange online!... I guess going straight to the network is the easiest way?

i work for o2 so heres the tips on how to best pass a credit check. firstly have a proof of signiture id. ie a credit card, debit card, passport, switch card or drivers license (with your current address). If you have not lived in your current address for over 3 years or are a student bring a form of address proof, a bank statement or a bill is best, or if you havent used your drivers license for your signiture id you cna use it. If you can satisfy those 2 points usually people will be accepted with a max £50 deposit, but if your an international student its usually £200 quid! the deposit after 3 months is credited to your account. For the rest of the credit check tell the truth, as any suspicions just make it worse.

How did you get on with signing up to an o2 contract?

Posted by p1000man
@owen:
Turns out o2 werent willing to match phones4u offer of either the s700 or p910 for free on the £30 p/m tariff - so never got a chance to see if i'd pass or not...

I may go with orange as i've heard they have a good student discount and tariff extras etc, plus i could get the D500 which is a ok phone, costs £50 but i would be credited £50 back as its a new connection and then another £50 for trading in a old phone, plus... i read something about discount for referring a friend
I tried this past saturday to get a d500 but the whole of london was sold out (orange stores - i know phones4u have them on o2).

Whats the credit check like at phones4u and CPW? Are they as willing to give a student a contract as o2's requirements?

if your already 18 then you shouldnt have any problem

i got an o2 contract for £30 a month when i was 16 in my mums name and she had a loan and 3 credit cards she was paying off

so if they passed her you will have no problem in getting one

and as soon as i was 18 i got a gd87 on finance which i payed off each month

try dialaphone for some good tariffs - you get loads of freebies and double mins and txts on some good phones

thats were i got mine

good luck

Can I suggest being totally truthful when you are credit checked.

As most people know, there are 3 credit reference agencies who compile credit data. In addition there is a separate database containing the answers you give to questions when being credit checked such as your employment status and salary etc.

Credit providers do look at the wide range of answers you have given as well as how true they may be in light of all the data you provide.

Imagine if you fail having given ropey details, if you then say 'oh hang on, I lied, can I try again' its not going to be a great start to your credit profile.

Find somewhere with a low deposit, build up a credit profile and you are less likely to have problems in the future.
