Which prepay operators in France and Italy

I'm going to France and Italy soon and would like to pick up short-term SIMs for use on my trip, rather than pay roaming charges. Is there an operator in either country that anyone here would recommend? My priorities, given my situation, are low start-up costs and reasonable calling rates.

TIA!

I would prefer SRF in France.

Tim telecom italia mobile
Wind
Vodafone
for GSM/GPRS
Same plus "3" for UMTS

All with a 5 Euro prepaid card (I prefer Wind for GSM and 3 for UMTS) and a lot of call cost possibilities. You can check directly 'cose many dealers have at least two operators. Recharge cards are sold in many places.

Thank you for your kindness.... my nick is an esclamation of a fake helvetic scientist of a Ricola spot here in Italy some years a go.... so no spelling in any language........

Ricola is a well known candy's brand.......
