NEW BLUETOOTH HEADSET !

Click to view updated thread with images

Hi !

I work as an industrial designer, and I've just designed a new bluetooth headset.

The headset which I have designed for a Danish company, is soon to be released.

And from today, I'm able to say more about it. Some of you have probably already seen the prototype on http://www.expansys.com.

The headset is called BLUESPOON from the company Nextlink.to.

The productionmodel can now be seen on :
http://www.nextlink.to

Extremely small, fits in the ear. Special "ear-lock", for "right ear use".
Battery talk-time : 7-8 hours.
Weight : under 10 gram !

You should be able to preorder it from Expansys. They have about 50 pre-orders on the headset already.

what about the price?

Posted by jh67
Lusipher :

It should/will be cheaper than the Ericsson headsets. Dont know exactly how much yet.
Depends also on production-costs, materials.

Thanks laffen

Yep, its really nice, and really small too !

I personally havent tested the sound-quality yet,..but according to "the sound-lab" it should be very good.
The little piece on the bottom is actually the microphone, as you probably already guessed. We would have made it "internal", and it might be in future versions.
We are constantly testing different ways to do this.

The ear-hook thing can be shaped individually to fit all, and fits perfectly.
You cant really "feel", that you're actually wearing a headset

Posted by jh67
Joen and Henrik...thaanks guys

It can actually be ordered from expansys in UK. Ofcourse its "preorder", and no price-tag yet. Expansys have already got about 50 orders on it

I should know more about the price in late january,..and I'll get back with this info as soon as I know.

The design had to be special/different, and we had to get it right the first time,..I think we pretty much did that.

It might come in different colors from the beginning,..this hasnt really been decided yet. But the silver metallic,grey-black and transparent blue, should be the "main-model".

BTW: The LEDS flash through the transparent blue-piece,..so you get a BLUE light

Nice Piece... Really 'futuristic'

Question : How does it charge? Do you have to plug it in or has it something like a cradle?

Thanks

Via cable on the back of the headset (small plug-thing).
No, its not a cradle-type.

And the headset will come in a small very nice box/case,..looks really cool

Hmm, according to our own calculations, it should be cheaper than the ericssons.
It depends on some different things, as I wrote earlier.

I will be able to say much more in the end of january/start of february.

Hehe...imagining what it will look like and what Your friends will say if You don't tell them You have this new handsfree!

Jan, the Bluespoon simply looks awesome. Especially the "in action" picture explained more than the stand-alone photo. I'm using the Ericsson HBH-10 for 1 year now, and it is my best friend in the car. Outside the car, the HBH-10 is too heavy to wear 'cause it swings to left and right when walking our turning your head.
I'm looking forward for more price-info and exact release-dates.

BTW: Lara Croft in Tombraider had a cool blue flashing LED in her headset, but the HBH-10 has a dull green one. Another pro for the Bluespoon ...

Great job!

Posted by jh67
Thanks ALL of you !

Well, actually had a meeting today with bluetooth engineers, CEO, technical staff.

We tried it out on the T-68,..works fine, found the bluespoon when pairing devices, and all seems to work really good.

And it flashes BLUE,..actually it is white LEDS behind the blue piece. Looks really COOL.

It should be available all over the world.

I'll keep posting info, as soon as I get it

Jan...a happy Bluespoon-man

Distributors/resellers :

If someone would like to be a distributor/reseller of Bluespoon, this is what you need to do :

Write an email to Nextlink.to. Their "sales-people" will tell you more about this.
http://www.nextlink.to

I'm not very much into this, and the sales-department takes care of these things

------------------------------------------

Info on release-dates and so on,..I'll write those sorts of info in here.
And I'll tell You, as soon as I get it

Your welcome Owizard

I'll post info as fast as I can

BTW: If you want to find out, just how big the headset is, or rather how small, then go into the kitchen and :

Take two tea-spoons and put them together, and you have a Bluespoon.
The covers/shells (top and bottom) will fit inside a teaspoon.

So its very small !

The "Idea" to the bluespoon, actually came from two spoons put together. And therefore the name Blue"spoon".
This is quite funny I think, and the true story of Bluespoon.

Have you guys thaught that you will be wearing a mini microwave-oven a few centimeters from your brain??

I would avoid this kind of toys and rather usee a normal HF-kit...

Hi,

I feel that Nextlink would conduct all necessary tests to ensure that the radiation levels are within permissible limits. What do you think Jan?

In some tests conducted in the UK, radiation levels while using a regular handsfree (not Bluetooth) found to be higher than normal radiation levels.

It's way too COOL Jan.. It will surely hit the market on it's relese date.. Anyweay.. I'm from Denmark.. And i wanted to know how much it will cost in Kr.
And when it will be released her in DK!? Ofcourse when you have the info..

Quite right OWIZARD
Nextlink is a very professional company, and of course tests have been made. Actually these things are tested all the time, and follows international standards.
Nextlink.to. makes professional custom-made headset for e.g. army-special units, security, firefighters, and have done this for quite a while, and with a lot of success too

The "radiation level" of Bluetooth is at the same time very low,..a very low freqency.

There're different opinions on radiation while using handsfree. The bluetooth headsets were said to have lower level of radiation than non-bluetooth.

One other thing is,..that the Bluespoon doesnt have the "ear-plug" that ordinary headsets have.

Hi Jan,

The Expansys website is still showing the old image of Bluespoon prototype. May be you should send them a new image. Cheers.

OWIZARD : yes I know hehe.

Actually my CEO is invited over to Expansys here in January. And I guess the "old proto" will be exchanged for the new Bluespoon

They probably havent had time yet to update their pictures

I would not say so. Bluetooth operates in the 2.4 GHz ISM (Industrial Scientific Medicine) band. It is in the same frequency-band as the microwave ovens...

I have not done any scientific or academic testing on radiaton levels, but I can share some facts:

Ericsson HBH10 radiates at 10mW= 0.01W
Microwaves are powered with 1000 W
During 1 year of usage I have not felt any heat or brain damage yet (I think...
Mobile phones radiate max. at 2W
Some people wear their phone in their shirt's pocket, right near their hart; and AFAIK: there are no reports yet that anyone was killed by a ringing phone that was radiating at 2W...

TRUE MMS

I'm using bluetooth headsets as well.
AND mobile-phones too
And other devices too.

Some people will always get sick, develop cancer or something,..but I dont really believe that its got something to do with wearing e.g. a bluetooth headset.
These people would get sick either way. They simply have those symptoms. And "something" might just "trigger" those symptoms.

All I know is that the companies making Bluetooth-devices, all have a certain/specific standard, which they have to follow. I know that Nexlink follow these international standards.

Another thing,..you dont usually wear your headset the whole day, and you certaintly dont sleep with it either.
And if someone dont want to use a headset,..well, then dont

I am a heavy mobile user. I used the HBH-15 Bluetooth headset for at least 2-3 hours everyday in the last two weeks. Personally, I didn't experience any health problems. Cheers.

And another thing - I heard a report a few months ago that normal handsfrees may be worse than just using a phone as they act as an aerial, of which your head is the top. With bluetooth, you're sending/receiving ratio waves upto 10 metres as opposed to several kilometres, so surely it's a much weaker signal than the phone anyway?

Yes the bluetooth signal is "weak".

Some say that headsets are worse than the phone itself,..and some dont.
I dont know if someone have come up, with a final conclusion to this.
There have been several tests, stating different things.

jh67,

Your original post indicated it is for "right-eared" use. Will it also work for those of us who are "left-eared"?

Keep up the good work, it looks great....

Hey Jan, now the next thing your company has to design is a tiny digital camera with bluetooth, being nothing but the lense and bluetooth chip. Make it so we can view the live moving image on our T68 when taking pictures...
I'm preordering one already

---------------------------------------------

JOHN : Funny thing, hehe,..I actually use left ear too I think most people could use the Bluespoon on right ear, it sits very close and firm,..and sound-quality is good.
I would prefer left ear, but it works good for me on right ear,..sooo Just gotta get use to it, hehe !

This version of Bluespoon is only for right-ear use.
Basically its made this way, according to statistic material (we produce earplugs/headsets for army, special forces, firefighters and security), and the statistics say:
80 percent right ear,
20 percent left ear.

Thats the main reason,..the other reason is the way the "ear-ring" is made/sits on the back of the headset.

It might come later on, in e.g. the next version. Or in custom-made version, which are made exclusively for THAT specific person.

We have been discussing the "right/left" a lot of times in the company.
But with the construction of the headset, we had to go with right ear for now.

AND Of course, this is also a "money-matter", and its Nextlink's "first shot" with bluetooth headset.
Which means A LOT of money have been invested in the development of this particular headset.

Some things will have to wait, its sad, but thats the way it works,..when you also live in a "money-world"

We have the newest in bluetooth, very expensive battery, and very good sound, and some of the smallest microphones available.

Materials dont actually come cheaper, when you want to construct the smallest bluetooth headset in the world, hehe.

At the same time, we wanna be able to sell it, at a reasonable price.
And we are going to achieve this too

Jan
