in my quest for something new to play with I was looking at this yesterday.
Expansys have the i-mate SP3
but I think I prefer the i-mate SP3i
and at £299.95 I think it is great value and would go very well with my iPAQ since they are based on the same operating system.
I'm very tempted...
Posted by DSF
yep it's a good phone and many people said that the battery is excelent (you can read some opinions about this phone in Audiovox STM 5600 link, i reccomend you to read them)
And about the i-mate SP3i i found it a little better, but just a little because the joystick and some software fixes.
Improvements of i-mate SP3i (Qtek 8020) over i-mate SP3 (Qtek 8010:
- Modified camera AP to adapt to slow SD cards brands.
- Improved SD card writing issue due to slow clock speed of some SD card manufacturers.
- Updated T9 text input application.
- Improved MP3 playback from SD card.
- Updated some network operator names.
- Updated Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone operating system build (AKU3).
- New MMS composer: 1.5.0.16
- Enhanced user interface and integrated file browser to attach files.
- Able to receive, playback and forward video MMS but cannot capture video and send directly as the camcorder cannot support .3gp video encoding.
- Solved MMS issue sent from SingTel network.
- Solved MMS issue sent from Nokia 6230 phone.
- Launch camera function added.
- GPRS will automatically disconnect after sending and receiving MMS.
- Improved standby time. The amount of improvement is dependant on network conditions, SIM card and usage pattern. Talk time and Bluetooth are not affected.
- Updated a number of network operator names.
- Added Bluetooth serial port support.
- Added ClearType font enhancement.
- Improved T9 text input performance.
- Improved USSD and Cell Broadcast performance.
- Clearer audio quality.

@masseur the i-mate SP3i is for UK only, i'm outside of UK, so i woldnt be able to use it here

I noticed that expansys say SP3i is the UK version but that just means its the version with 900/1800/1900 Mhz rather than the version with 850/1800/1900 Mhz as far as I can tell from the i-mate web site
therefore in Romania there should be no problem using it as you use 900 and 1800 Mhz don't you? and 850 Mhz is only for US as far as I know
Posted by DSF
Thanx for the info masseur
I didn't know that UK operate with GSM 900/1800/1900 Mhz
Romania has 4 mobile operators:
- 2 operators on GSM 900
- 1 operator on GSM 1800
- 1 operator on CDMA 450

I don't think there are any 1900Mhz operators in UK but 900 and 1800 are good enough
still deciding about this phone and looking at what else is around
Posted by DSF
Those 2 smartphones are the smallest ones in the world. I don't think you'll find something better and with this size & this price..
The design of imate sp3i does remind me of a phone.. i think of a sleek phone from mitubishi ?
I think you woldn't regret if you buy one of this 2 phones, since they are not that expensive and have a lot of great features (extra: Windows Media Player 10)
I cannot buy from expansys or other online store (just from ebay, but there are too much scams) from my country.c
It's your decission

where did you read that it has windows media player 10?
even my one month old iPAQ hx4700 with Windows Mobile 2003 second edition doesn't have that as WMP10 for windows mobile hasn't long been available and we're still waiting for a firmware update to include that
Posted by DSF
http://www.microsoft.com/wind[....]bout/windowsmediaplayer10.mspx
...and the opinions from here
Audiovox SMT5600 has WMP10 so i guess the other HTC Typhoon phones have also WMP10 (i'm not 100% sure, if this is not true sorry)

iMate brings Media Player 10 updates (~the new nr.4)

It seems that imate sp3/i doesnt have WMP10 by default ... but there will be an update..
Posted by masseur
so its the same as the ipaq then.
still thinking whether this is really what I want...
Posted by simon211175
Anybody know if the SP3/sp3i support MP3 and/or WMA files as ringtones, or are they just MIDI?
Posted by DSF
@simon211175 i've read somewhere that sp3/sp3i support MP3/WMA/WAV/MIDI because of Windows 2003 SE (second edition)
Posted by masseur
DSF: its does say it supports
Audio: Crisp audio playback via WAV/WMA/AMR/AAC/MP3 full stereo player, hands-free
which is to be expected but I can find no mention of which, if any, of these can be used as ringtones which is what simon211175 is asking. Its not even mentioned in the techincal specs you can download on the imate web site

masseur but i didn't said it doesn't support, i'd said that it support because of the Windows 2003 SE.
Somewhere i've read that with previous version of Windows you couldnt set MP3 as ringtones.
Posted by Freak
you can also se the new qtek S100
Posted by DSF
Wow the htc feeler (qtek 8020) looks better than the htc typhoon (spv c500), very sleek. @Freak wich one of this two phones do you like most? What version of WMP they have? Thanx for the photos
Posted by DSF
I've read here and found out that you can't send/receive content to and from another phone with the HTC Typhoon. In other words bluetoth doesn't have the OBEX (objects exchange) profile.
Don't know about the HTC Feeler if it has this limitation.
List of the phones made by HTC and the carriers:
Posted by tindo196
i have spv e100 its quite good .the new models are way better if htc keeps on producing phones this good se,nokia and moto might have to watch their backs
Posted by DSF
@tindo196 yeap, the HTC had done a really great job.
These two lil' (=little) phones beats every SE & Nokia (P series and Communicator excluded) - are faster, smarter, compact. And the HTC's phones are not that overpriced as SE ones.

im using an HTC typhoon/ C500/SP3 whatever you wanna call it,
very very impressed with it. its taken over my K700 for the time being, is a lot lot quicker than the old SPV Canary was, the only problem is aware of is Mini-sd!!
can only find a card thats 256mb, granted i can get the whole of the incredibles on it but thats not the point! i want the incredibles and another film on 1 card!
other than that very very impressed with the handset.

ok, ok, enough already! I just ordered an SP3i from Expansys so should get it tomorrow
fortunately they have a 21 day return policy (even if there is no fault) so I'll check it out and decide that way since I couldn't really decide any other way until now
Posted by DSF
@fatreg there are also mini-SD cards with 512 megs
What can u say about the battery, avaiable software on the phone, signal, speakerphone, etc ?
Posted by DSF
masseur good work. i hope you'll like it!
I'm waiting your mini-review after you'll be play enough with the device
Posted by fatreg
ive an orange one so the software on the phone has been hacked about with like theres no tomorrow, but that aside, its not too bad, a lot quicker than my E200 is, battery life is still a lot lot better than it used to be! watched 3 episodes of little britain today, made 4 hours of phone calls, sent numerous texts and its only jsut whinging the battery is low!!
would/will do a review if i can the time!
masseur has just ordered an SP3i?? how much money does one man have?? he bought a sim free V3 a few weeks ago!

Just got te SP3i 5 minutes ago and I have to say I am impressed. Already synchronised my contacts, calendar, email and tasks (since I already had activesync installed)
so far I am impressed but I will write more later
Posted by DSF
Great news masseur! I'm waiting more opinions/impresions from you. Tell us about feeling, software, performance, etc ;)
Posted by DSF
And when u write in, please dont forget to say some words about the battery
Posted by DSF
I've emailed imate for some reasons, and they said that the sp3i will be avaiable in december or january but this mobile is avaiable on expansys.com. They said that the aprox price will be 430$ (cheaper than sp3). @fatreg how is the navigation pad of your c500? is it ergonomic?
Posted by masseur
been using the SP3i for a few days now and so a few comments
the interface has a nice feel to it and I am able to run versions of my favourite ipaq applications on it, such as microsoft pocket streets and betaplayer to play the movies and video clips that I can make direct from my DVDs (been doing this on the iPAQ for ages now)
the phone takes a long time to be ready from power on, around about a minute to be able to use the menu and another 10 seconds or so to get a network connected
bluetooth implementation is not great and I cannot pick items to send via bluetooth as there is no FTP profile in the phone. Indeed you cannot select a picture (for example) and send via IR even, only email and MMS are available options. you have to go to file manager to be able to send via IR
to answer a question posed, so far I have not found any way to be able to use mp3 or wma as ringtones
its nice that the top icon list updates itself so the most recent applications are listed first as this saves time scrolling through the start menu
it does have a flight mode too btw
not much else to complain about but all in all I do like the interface compared with "normal" phones though I can see room for improvement
the screen, although the same resolution as the k700, is nice and big compared to the K700 (for example) and the same size as that on the V3 and I find I have to wear my glasses less to view the screen
pocket internet explorer will always be my choice of handheld browser, even compared to opera on P910 etc and pocket outlook emails work great too.
msn messenger is a nice to have but sometimes the other person has to wait a while for me to compose my replies
there is also pocket MSN but I don't use MSN so that won't be any use to me
I use windows media player to play my music but leave video playing to betaplayer (as mentioned earlier) as its heaps better with many more configurable options, and its free too!
finally, the standby screen is just as useful as it is on ipaq, showing the operator currently connected to, date, time, my next appointments, profile and number of text messages and of course the icon list of recently used applications. the level of details can be changed or removed to look just like most phones with operator, date and time
I'll spend more time with this phone and make any more relevant comments that I think are important

Thx masseur for infos. I'm somehow dissapointed.. About bluetoth: so in other words u cannot transfer data via bt from pc to phone and vice-versa? How much memory (internal) is left for the user? What about the quality of audio?.. And u can set mp3 and wma as ringtones, u must copy them to \\Storage\\Application Data\\Sounds ... tell me if it works or not
Posted by masseur
trying to send a file using bluetooth from my pc to SP3i gives me a message saying that no FTP client exists on the SP3i
I had about 27mb when I last checked but I already transferred some stuff to the phone
audio quality is ok until you turn the volume right up and then the speaker can't handle the MP3 music I tried very well
I did copy the MP3 there but they don't show up in the list of sounds when selecting ringtones. I also copied them to "my documents" too.
Posted by DSF
I've read somewhere that u can use mp3 sounds if u copy the files to the path speciefed before (the person had an audiovox 5600 -htc typhoon).. Have u made some calls with the sp3i? If so, how is the voice of the interlocutor? Is it clear or 'metalic' (like nokia)? What about the performance? The apps/games run smoth? How many mb of free ram do you have if no program is opened? What about video playback? How is the joystick (compared to t610)? How do you transfer the files beetwen the pc and phone and what about the speed? The package does include a data cable? Thx again
Posted by masseur
so many questions
well I have tried and tried and I cannot get the MP3 to show up in the list offered for ringtone selection. I have tried large and small MP3 in case there was a size limit.
calls are perfectly clear, not tinny or metalic at all. its nice when you answer the call that you get a "view calendar" option on screen and also if the caller is recognised you get a "view contact" option too
performance is great but then it is a pretty zippy processor (170mhz I recall reading). The best way to test that is to play some videos and they run very smoothly without exception
the joystick is nice and wide but perhaps a little stiff and I do find it a little hard to get it to the up position sometimes. I expect it will loosen up after time.
transferring files is easiest done while connected to the pc via activesync. this is the same as how my ipaq works and in windows explorer you get a "mobile device" entry which can be expanded to show most folders on the phone
the package does include a USB to mini USB cable but its a sync cable only so I am actually using the USB to mini USB sync and charge cable that came with my motorola V3 as it charges the phone at the same time.
apparantly some of the bluetooth questions will be answered in an upcoming firmware release which is downloadable from the i-mate web site btw
Posted by simon211175
Well, I got an email from i-mate customer services. they say that the sp3 and sp3i will only use WAV or MIDI files as ringtones as that is all the Windows for Smartphone second edition supports.
Course, the Audiovox 5600 (sp3) manual says you can use WMA files too, as does the O2 xphone II (sp3i) site.
Try putting a WMA file in the same place you tried the mp3 and see if that works. It's pretty much agreed now that these phones don't support MP3 ringtones, but if they support WMA then it'd save me a lot of time converting my files to WAV format when I get the SP3i
Posted by DSF
@masser i ask so many questions because i'm so curious :) I'm just wondering if the sp3i can handle multiple apps at same time.. It is multitasking isnt it? How you switch beetween apps? (sorry for bothering you, but i hadnt the chance to test a windows phone). Hope the fw will improve the bt capabilities.. @simon well, it must be possible to use mp3 as ringtones since the internal sw is capable to decode mp3s.. or it's a microsoft restriction?
Posted by masseur
I wasn't complaining about so many questions (hence the smiley!)
I've tried copying a couple of WAVs to the sounds folder and my documents but neither show up in the ringtone list so I am a bit confused about this one
yes, its multi tasking. I can start it connecting to email and downloading while I switch and do something else. it will also continue to play music or videos in the background. ditto for browsing etc
you can just press the home key or the red phone key and it takes you back to the standby page
just because it plays MP3 doesn't mean they can be used as a ringtone. remember the P800 had MP3 capability but not for ringtones, for example
Posted by DSF
Try to search for a predefined ringtone and copy your audio file in that folder.. Have u tried wap sites (eg: esato, yahoo)? If so, the pocket ie does handle them perfectly? Can you connect using a proxy with pocket ie and msn? I forgot to ask u if u like the design :)
Posted by fatreg
ive got some wmas to work as ringtones. mine are just on my memory card. then the phone just finds them when i go into sounds. oh and while im here on the sending things to and from the phone via bt. i can do it on this one no probs at all. as standard it didnt do it but a simple trip to coolsmartphone.com and a download of phone explorer en soon sorted that. can transfer to the shoe too which is good! any othere questions people? fatreg
Posted by masseur
thats an excellent site thanks, and smartexplorer is definitly what I need to deal with the bluetooth issue which was almost a show stopper for me...
now, the next thing I would like to do is caller id images but don't seem able to locate that anywhere... any clues?
Posted by masseur
ok, although you can't use mp3 as ringtones you CAN use WMA! I was putting them in the wrong place. They need to go into Storage/Application Data/Sounds (rather than My Documents or My Documents/Sounds as I was trying before)
Posted by DSF
@masseur for caller's picture try this: go to camera mode, take a pic, go to options and chose caller id. If this dont work, maybe fatreg can help. @fatreg u didnt answer to my question about the nav keys. And if u have more experiences with those 2 pls share to us (if u want :))
Posted by masseur
yeah I already found how to do it when you take a pic but I wanted to use my own existing image but I have figured it out now thanks
so much to learn, so little time
Posted by simon211175
@masseur: thanks for the feedback on the features of this phone, with confirmation of the WMA files as ringtones, I am now almost certain this will be my next phone
Posted by masseur
thats good and I am sorry for getting it wrong first time but I found it hard to believe myself that at least WMA couldn't be sued so a little searching found the answer I needed.
I'm pretty happy now and will not be sending this phone back. The trouble is with the V3 as my primary phone and the SP3i as my secondary, I haven't touched any
phone this week!
with the V3 and SP3i both having 3 in their name, maybe thats my lucky number!
Posted by DSF
SP3i sounds better than V3 :D (also i dont like clamshell phones). So masseur, you can really receive files via bluetooth from the pc/ipaq/other phone with Smart Explorer program?
Posted by masseur
the SP3i certainly does have more total capability than the V3, or indeed any sony ericsson except the P series
the smart explorer allows sending of files via bluetooth only, you cannot receive files by bluetooth because the sending device still cannot detect an FTP client on the phone
that suits me though as I just want a quick and easy way to get pictures and stuff off the phone and onto my pc without getting the cable out.
of course, it would be nicer if it worked both ways but that will come I guess with a firmware update, maybe
Posted by DSF
Hope the next firmware will add wmp10, support for mp3 ringtones and fix the bluetooth issues (and maybe others stuff?).. We should mail microsoft/imate for releasing a new firmware.. Btw you can upgrade your sw with the included cable or you need something special for this operation?
Posted by masseur
from what I have read and been told by their support yesterday, its done through the supplied cable which is a standard USB to mini-USB cable
