Personally, I wouldnt go for an Ipod, theyre over priced and over rated.
But if your set on an ipod, go for the 20 GIG 4th gen one.. Theyre big enough for most peoples CD collection and doesnt cost as much as the 40GB
The photo one ive seen today, it looks ok, but are you really going to put photo's onto, what purely should be, an mp3 player..
It looks like a pledge to make even more money out of people.
The ipod mini is a rip off. its only 4 gig and costs nearly as much as the 20 gig ipod.
If i were to get an ipod i would get the 20 gig one.
Posted by p900 lover
i no they are over rated and over priced, but they are just so nice!
and i also know what u mean about getting the 20g insted of the 40 but if u look at it there is £80 between them and i get a dock included which would cost me about £40 anyway, so for an extra £40 i could get 20 g more.
is there a differenc in size between the 20 and 40 gig?
Posted by Spawney
Yeah, 20 gig lol
I think the 40gig is a little fatter if you mean physical size, as in deeper.

I wouldnt buy one either (unfortunately i did already) But 40 gb is a bigger than 20 gb. I have a 20 gb ipod since the size looks much better.
Posted by p900 lover
cool, thanks
ill just have to go into a shop and have a feel for myself,
my friend has a 40 gig and its not that big, but as u say the 20 gig is smaller so i might have to go for that.

just one more thing, does anyone have a ipod photo?

@spawney
If you think the iPod mini is a rip-off, where you get 4gb of music for £179, what do you think of the following:
iRiver iFP-195T (512mb) for ~£170
iRiver iFP-595T (512 MB) for ~£170
iRiver N10 / iFP-1190 (256MB) for ~£140
Creative Labs Nomad MuVo2 X-Trainer (512 MB) for ~£140
Sony NW-E75 Network Walkman (256MB) for ~ £130
So the iPod mini, for just £10 - £40 more money gives you 8 to 16 times more storage!!
Which do you think are the rip-offs now?

Flash memory devices are always gonna be more expensive than hard drive based ones (pound per MB).

hi mate if your looking for an un-baised view of the ipods go to this site : www.ipodlounge.com , this is has convinced me that the ipod photo is the one for me

Got my new iPod photo 40gb on Saturday from MacExpo in London. One of the first in the UK!
VERY, Very, very pleased with it!
Posted by Superluminova
cool! whats the screen like mate? i can't wait to get mines! 2 weeks and counting!
Posted by Jools
Screen is great! As good, if not better than the K700 screen actually. Same resolution (I believe) and almost the same size (iPod is a couple of millimetres bigger).
It's unbelievably fast scrolling through full-screen photos on the iPod screen. You can go through hundreds in a second. Colours on the iPod screen are nice and bright and vivid. And the photos look great on a TV. Nice soft-edged right to left wipe transition on iPod screen and TV.

Well, I tried to take some impressive pictures of my shiny new iPod photo, but apparently my digital camera is a bit crap at close-ups, so they're not that great!
Doesn't really give an accurate impression of how good the display is...

A friend of mine just got a Creative HD based player, supposed to kick iPod mini's arse. Don't buy an iPod mini, but maybe the iPod photo, I don't know. But I know that there are better and cheaper alternatives to the iPod mini.
Edit: For example, the slightly cheaper and much better Creative Zen Micro. An extra Gb of space, a better screen, smaller, what more could you want? Oh yeah. And it's NOT an iPod!!!

@nickorooster:
I'm not sure where you're getting the specs for the Zen Micro and iPod mini from, but according to the manufacturers web-sites the iPod mini is smaller than the Zen:
iPod mini: 3.6" x 2.0" x 0.5" (= 3.6" cubic area) and 3.6 ounces in weight
Zen Micro: 2.0" x 3.3" x 0.7" (= 4.62" cubic area) and 3.8 ounces in weight

What about an Archos Gmini ? I think there's a 40GB model available for around £250.
Posted by pride2010
After searching around for a suitable top-spec MP3 player I settled for the iRiver H340 - got it the other day and am very impressed - 40GB and 16hours playback (up to 50hours with additional battery pack). If anyone is interested I would go for the international model rather than the US model as it has a cradle and basic remote and USB2GO (which the US one doesnt).
Very pleased with my iRiver !!!!
Posted by Superluminova
cheers for the images mate it looks great, i want one now! lol
also the ipod mini may not have the best spec or be the best value for money but if you want cool design with easy of use its prefect, this is why my lady wants it for her birthday.
so i think i might be turning into a mac fan!

That's an interesting article, and does raise some (fairly) valid points. But here's my take on his points:
1st issue - Batteries
I've just (on Saturday) bought my second iPod after using the previous for 2 years and 3 months. And the battery in that one is still going strong. As far as replacing them goes, companies offer a 48-hour replacement service for extra high capacity batteries for around £30. Not a big problem IMO.
2nd issue - Multiple computers and multiple iPods
Firstly, no sensible person only has one copy of any important file (music or otherwise), so if he'd backed-up his music like any sensible person would, he'd have no reason to want to copy music off his iPod. Any anyway, there are dozens of free utilities that do that easily. (My fave is Senuti). The reason Apple stop you transferring music from the iPod is to try to prevent you from giving all your mates your music for free, just by plugging your iPod into their computer.
Also, if he has 40gb of music, why would he buy a 4gb iPod mini then complain about its capacity?
3rd issue - Quality
As I said above, my first iPod, over 2 years old, is still going strong, and I've never had a single problem with it. Nor has any of my friends with iPods. Maybe we've been lucky. Maybe he's just been unlucky or he doesn't take good care of his stuff! Anything you buy will suffer wear and tear with use. But saying that I've managed to keep my 2 year old iPod pretty scratch free, just by taking care of it. That's the same with mobile phones, cameras or any shiny electronic item. They're gonna get damaged if you don't put them in a case, or care for them.
4th issue - Apple going-it-alone
This I do (mostly) agree with, which is why I've only bought 2 tracks from the iTunes Music Store. What happens if Apple go bust (unlikely), and you've bought all your music in their format? Ok, so at least, unlike other rivals, their music won't stop playing if Apple cease to exist, but you won't be able to play it on other devices (probably). I still buy CDs (from CD-Wow for £8-ish) so I've always got a pristine quality original to re-rip if I ever need to.
But I guess this issue applies to other formats too, not just Apple's.
Just my 50 cents worth!!!
Posted by Superluminova
with all dew respect, that thing just doesn't have the style or quality of any of todays ipods designs

Here's an independent review from the guys at The Register of the Creative Zen Micro, a supposed iPod mini competitor:
Creative Zen Micro 5GB music player
A few quotes:
"At 8.3 x 5 x 1.8, it lacks the cigarette-lighter slimness of the iPod Mini, but feels more solid, less flimsy."
"The display itself presents almost but not quite an exact copy of the iPod UI"
"Another 'steal' is the ZM's ability to sync up with PIM software - Microsoft Outlook in this case"
"Creative quotes up to 12 hours for the ZM's playtime on a single charge. I got just eight hours running two-odd hours' worth of 128Kbps MP3 files over and over out of the test machine's pre-installed power pack."
"Hidden inside the ZM is its 1" 5GB hard drive - a Seagate unit, I believe. Creative claims it's not only bigger than the iPod Mini's 4GB Hitachi HDD but more reliable. Maybe it is, but it's certainly a slow unit. It takes around five seconds to start playing a new song"
"The ZM's hard drive can be used as a USB Mass Storage device, but you have to enable it to do so first - it's by no means plug and play. Worse, the player limits how much of its disk space can be used for general files - you can choose from 128MB, 256MB, 512MB and then in 512MB intervals up to 2GB."
"Pity PC users too. I installed WM10 and Media Explorer on a Sony Vaio running Windows XP pre-Service Pack 2 and got the Blue Screen of Death every time I tried to run the Creative Software."
Verdict
"The Zen Micro is a real improvement on Creative's previous compact HDD-based music player, the MuVo2, and over the company's large-format hard drive units, the Zen Jukebox range. I'm not sure about the line's bright colours but the white unit I looked is certainly Creative's best looking player yet.
But by trying too hard to look like an iPod, it risks being seen as a 'me too' product. That would be a shame - it's a good music player, and it's size, styling, capacity and radio make it a worthy challenger to the Apple product."

well after a lot of decision making (well not really) i asked for a ipod photo and to my suprise my aunty got me 1 2day and she gave it to me early, yay
the pics dont take long to load and the color makes playing solitare so much better.
also to my suprise it came with a case, the normal 40 GB ipod dont come with a case.
now all i have to do is get my friend who has a mac and an ipod to come and show me how to use all this itunes malarky, lol

Regarding design, I hate to say i'm in the "big whoop" catagory.. personally I can't understand why so many people are making such a fuss over an ice cream container with a circle on it.. wow... woo... yay. ho hum.
Not sure how things play out in other countries but a friend purchased their Ipod here and when told that it had to be software upgraded was given a bill. Aparently software upgrades weren't covered by apple. How nice. (At least even
cover theirs for 12 months Posted by Superluminova
woo hoo, got my ipod photo and i must say i'm very pleased, photos are very clear and its such a great and simple way to scroll through and play songs!

i have a 3rd G 15gb ipod, i must say i like the 3g interface better than the clickwheel, also, replace the ipods crappy earbuds ASAP
Posted by Jools
@Gigs:
It's th simplicity of the design that most people appreciate. There aren't billions of buttons to do simple things. It's also about the design of the user interface which makes the iPod the simplest player to use - its not just about the design of the physical appearance. Design isn't just about looks!!
BTW, your friend was conned!! All iPod software updates and iTunes updates are free, can be downloaded for free from Apple's web-site and installed easily yourself!
