The new Sharp V902 UMTS phone, just relased on the Vodafone network, rocks!
- 2 Megapixel camera
- 320x240 pixel TFT screen
- Bluetooth
- etc
I've called the Vodafone Citypoints in the Netherlands, but the Sharp will not be in the shops before December.
Who already owns one?
I wonder particularly about
- photo quality
- Bluetooth: any problems connecting to headsets and PC?
- Videotelephony: Can you point the camera at yourself when watching the screen? From the photos I have seen it looks like the screen-angle is not optimal when the camera is pointed at your face (and the screen is turned 180 degrees).
- What limitations has Vodafone imposed on the software? Can you send and receive emails with pictures? Can you up- and download jpegs and videos to and from the phone over USB?

gaston,
yr post is very timely. i dont live in europe so i dont know when the 902 will be launched in europe. in japan it will be launched 2nd week in december.
everybody is focusing their attention on the se v800. as would be expected in this forum.
however, the fone to watch, and probably wait for, is indeed the v902 by sharp.
in every way its full specs (as released on the vodafone japan web site (named 902SH in japan)) is either better than or equal to the se.
you can see the marketing positioning by virtue of the numbering difference: 800 series vs. 900 series.
most interesting to focus on is the camera specs: 2megapixel ccd (sharp) versus 1.3megapixel cmos (se).
the sharp camera has a 2 times mechanical zoom and 10 times digital zoom. the se camera has a 4 times digital zoom only.
also, the sharp camera is an autofocus lens versus fixed focus on the se.
additionally, the sharp is a genuine qvga display with a 2.4 inch display versus the se 2.2 display size. this is a very large difference.
you are right to ask when it is to be launched. the fone to watch and wait for, in terms of spec, is the sharp.
i myself will buy the se v802 when it is launched in japan. i like the design of the fon better, and although i may be the only one in the world, i actually prefer the softer focus of the cmos lens. it provides an artwork, rather than a too clean, crisp peice of recorded digital image. the cmos is almost an analogue image. the colours bleed into each other. having said that however, the cmos used in the se is very high grade of cmos and is very high quality.

Interesting point about the CMOS / CCD difference.
Do you know what kind of flashlight is used in the Sharp? Is it LED-flash, or traditional?
I thought Japan was ahead of Europe when it comes to cameraphones, but I understand the Sharp 902 is also by Japanese standards the best one to buy?
I agree the Sharp 902 appears to be the digital all-in-one pocket device we've been waiting for: excellent camera, UMTS, videotelephony, stereo MP3, Bluetooth, memory cards, highest resolution TFT screen, etc. etc.
Pity about missing out on the touch-screen, which I like very much on my P800.

hello,
there are no details listed anywhere about the kind of flash.
by the way, the 2nd (sub) camera in the 902 is actually a cmos lens.
in japan, it seems that maybe near 70% of the fon cameras are ccd. the rest is cmos. the "best" camera lens in japan is one with a 4megapixels ccd.

Allright, two cameras on board!
Didn't know that...
The secondary cam is probably meant for video-telephony then.

I do. It's a nice device!

Do you mind posting some pics of it please..The only pictures i've come across are press release official ones.

You have one?
Can you answer my questions in the first posting?
And can you post a picture you took with the 2 megapixel camera?
Any other remarkable things about this phone (both positive and negative)?
thanks!

In a newsitem, elsewhere here on Esato, I read that Sharp will use Symbian OS in their new phones:
http://www.esato.com/news/article.php/id=144
Does anyone know if the Sharp V902 will have a Symbian OS ?
Or will it be the traditional ITRON ?

sharp 902 will not have symbian.

Seems that the Sharp V902 has been removed from the Dutch and UK Vodafone websites.
I've heard they're having trouble finalizing the (embedded) software.
Hope this will not mean we have to wait until after Christmas....

Quote from the German Nov 10th press-release by Vodafone:
"Price including 2 hours of Vodafone MobileTV (selected special contents for UMTS mobiles, excluding the Sharp 902, with new programmes lasting 10-60 minutes on a daily or weekly basis)"
Why is the Sharp 902 EXCLUDED here? Some restrictions with MobileTV that other 3G/UMTS handsets do not have?
Posted by deuxani
Weird, cause here in The Netherlands in all the "Watch TV on your mobile" (or something like that) ads they use a 902 for showing it off.
Posted by Gaston
True.
In all their ads they use the Sharp 902 (also for MP3, etc), and that's the only 3G/UMTS phone that is still not available....

not sure if people have seen the 902 manual (in english). here is link:

do NOT buy a sharp v902
It looks promising and the camera quality is great (and it supports UMTS and Phone TV, but it has millions of flaws to ruin the fun.
1. It's big
2. Vodafone Branding that CANNOT be removed
3. When you're calling someone, you can't hear them unless you turn on the handsfree mode. Even in a quiet environment.
4. No mp3s as ringtones, except from vodafone for lots of money
5. Camera takes a long time to take a picture, and if anything moves within that time (even only 1 cm) it gets blurry.
6. The microphone isn't even decent, I've called a hotline asking if I can trade the phone for a S700i and 90% of the time he couldn't understand what I was saying.
7. The Menu is slow due to vodafone forced menu.
8. As far as I know you can't install anything that isn't from vodafone (Atleast not games, as far as I know. Prove me wrong.)
9. 111 x 51 x 27,5 MM and 149 G, bulky and heavy. Opened up it's nearly 14 centimeters long.
10. It's ring tone isn't loud enough on MOST available ringtones (When a SE p900 rings, you can hear it at the other end of the street)
11. The picture viewer is terrible, takes long to load and can't even view pictures at full screen.
12. The keys aren't sensitive enough (That might be just because I've been using a p900 [touchscreen] before and got used to it. Just my opinion.)
13. The camera and display get easily scratched and dirty. Other than my p900, which I've had for a year and no major problems with the display (no problems at all actually), the camera of the v902 doesn't have a lid or anything to protect it from getting dirty and getting scratched. Albeit it's a 2 megapixel camera, and has pretty big lens. The display also attracts lots of dust, etc.
14. Someone asked about bluetooth problems with pc, I've read that the phone constantly disconnects.
Now for some good points:
1. 2MP Camera
2. UMTS and VIDEO
3. Good mp3 playback quality
4. Decent display

When you change the sim card, everything downloaded from Live are locked. They work only with the original( the one you bought the rings for examples or the java games) sim card.

Oh dear, Blaukraut.
The phone is big, but only by the overhanging lip that includes the camera lens. Otherwise it's the same width, thickness of the GX-30. Considering it has a comprehensive contacts (with address, telephone, email, picture), calandar, to-do, calculator or any other Java app. It even has a bar-code reader! It can pass for most of the functionality that Smartphone users want.
No surprise about the Vodafone branding, they paid BIG money for exclusive rights. It's the "Vodafone 902SH by Sharp" to give it it's proper title, not the Sharp 902. They paid for it, the phone (in each Vodafone country) has had it's firmware optimised for the Vodafone network and Live! menus. Get used to it.
Call quality is fine. Yours must be faulty, if you bought from Vodafone you can get it changed. If you bought from a 3rd party, good luck.
If mp3 ringtones are that important (mp3 decoding takes power, especially if used just for a ringtone) then you need to buy another phone. You can convert WAV files etc. to MIDI using the Yahama WSC-MA2 program that's free on the internet.
Camera is very fast, especially for 2 megapixels. Switch off auto-focus and see. Auto-focus takes a second or so to work, there aren't any other phones currently that does this.
The menu is fast. What are you talking about?
Mp3 music, pictures, wallpapers, videos etc. can be installed via the SD card, Bluetooth or infrared. Java must be downloaded via WAP, but it doesn't have to be from Vodafone. Search the forum to find out how.

MIDI ringtones depend on the setting in the MIDI file. If you have an editor you can change this, it does ring very loud on the stereo speakers built-in.
The picture viewer views about 240x240 pixels at one time, but you can scroll and zoom in fine detail. 240x240 is more than the majority of other phones have available.
Most displays are prone to being scratched if you're not careful. Get a protector. No camera lens cover, yes that's a shame but only a very few of the newer phones have started to cater for this now and it's still not commonplace.
Bluetooth works fine, as well as my Sony Ericsson for OBEX and handsfree.
Overall, the majority of 902SH owners are very happy with their phone as it is smaller than a Smartphone and offers a great camera and 30fps QVGA camcorder.
