Bluetooth with a 1 mile range!

If one were to carry out this modification would any bluetooth device be able to connect to it in that range? For example, would my P910i with a stated 10m range, be able to connect to this?
For example if I had a bluetooth dongle that has a range of 100m running on my PC and a mobile phone with a bluetooth range of 10m trying to connect to it. Would I only be able to connect the phone within the 10m or within the 100m?
Would be good if i could connect the phone at the ranges specified in the mod article

Bluetooth connections, like most connections where handshaking is involved, are limited to the range of the equipment with the shortest range only

So to use that with a phone you will only be getting 10M out of it.

The solution that is presented in the article mentioned in the first post, will indeed extend the range between the modified BT adapter and a normal "10m BT" phone.

This is because the increased range is attained by using a better antenna, not by increasing the RF power transmitted by the adapter.

The antenna has gain for both transmitted and received signal, thus enabling it to be heard at a greater distance, and also enabling it to hear a weak signal from the distant phone.

I believe the handshake analogy is wrong coz if one person has a 1m long arm n other person has 2m long arm, they can shake hands from a distance of 3m which is not the case of bluetooth. Perhaps punchin in the stomach would be a better analogy :-D

The arm thing is adding the two ranges but thats not the same with bluetooth because that would then mean bt would work at 20m which is wrong.

It has to be a handshake when the two have to have ranges adding upto 10m or less i.e:

phone--->X<-------dongle
3m 7m

3+7=10m

or

phone---->x<---dongle
4m 3m

4+3=7m...7m10m

@clank and @Lynx: I think you two should stop before people get really confused here.

This is how it works:

1. Normal BT phones and BT adapters have an ouput power of about 1mW, and an omni-directional antenna. These two facts, together with the properties of the BT radio signal, add up to a range of about 10 meters.
2. A 250m BT adapter has an output power of upto 100mW, and an omni-directional antenna. It cannot handshake with a 10m phone at above 10m, because although the phone can hear the adapter, the adapter cannot hear the phone.
3. The solution in the article uses a non-omni-directional antenna. Any non-omni-directional antenna will have gain for both transmitted and received signals (with respect to a comparable omni-directional antenna). Thus, a 10m BT adapter with such an antenna, can handshake with a 10m BT phone at distances in excess of 10m.

....not quite....the blue tooth connection range is dependant on the device with the longest reach (both ways)

i.e. if you have a B/T amplifier of 1 mile - it needs to amplify 'both' transeiver & receiver (in & out) - then it doesn't matter if your mobile has a radius of 1 inch

i haven't read the article, but it's unlikely to amplify both ways (prolly just reciever radius)

well let me clear this up for you because Input device IN::: OUT::: Inches::: doesnt make sence for everyone if you know what i mean . i think an easy way to sum this is : you can add some kind of amplifier in one computer and another one in another computer thus they can then be a mile away and be able to connect ;; but with a cell phone it is much harder to do, because first there is no enought juiceand seconde there is no such devices made for cell phones(amplifier). i hope this is clear enought to understand.
