Until Telkom is entrenched in Africa will they consider selling their stake in Vodacom...they have not won a single fixed-licence in Africa and thus would want to keep Vodacom. If they did win a fixed-line licence they would want it to be linked to a GSM licence.

I thought the reason for going to war was to make oil cheaper?

Posted by Tahir Ally

What phones are all you guys using? Most of us use SE's but are there any you guys using any other makes?

Posted by Tahir Ally
I sell quiet a bit of SonyEricsson and i must say i did not get a single 1 coming back for repairs for the past 1 year.....You want QUALITY buy SONYERICSSON ///

Posted by uthetha ituvi
A p900. Best phone I've used to date. Don't think the p910 has enough over the p910 to entice me to upgrade. Maybe the p910's successor will. I don't care if it'll still be a long while before the p910 replacement makes its appearance..the p900 does the job, for me, until that time.
I also have a Blokia 7600 as a spare phone. They were on a HUGE special in the UK last October on the '3' network. Price? £29.99 on PAYG!!!!!!(oh, on condition you bought £15 airtime as well with the purchase...!) I ordered 2 (maximum per customer)online from the carphonewarehouse's website on the day the launched the special and 2 days later they had such a backlog that they took the special off their site! I had the phone unlocked and flashed to access the hidden menus for £10. The other 7600 I bought is now in East London SA, with a Vodacom simcard in it.Has not given any hassles whatsoever.

Are Sendo phones sold in SA? There is apparently someone in Jhb who is the Sendo SA agent, according to Sendo when I contacted them. Most of the older Sendo phones are cheap n' nasty, but the Sendo X is such a GR8 phone to use. Was contemplating bringing some of these into SA. They are on eBay for about £120-£160 new.
The local cellphone shop nearby is also selling '3' and Vodafone-unlocked Motorola e1000's for £160.
Lastly, when I was last in SA about 2 years ago, Cell C were selling Sagem myX-5's. Are there any newer Sagems in SA?The new Sagem myX-8 is also a very underrated phone. I remember also seeing some LG phones at Jhb International. Is the SA market too saturated now to bother with these smaller, if underrated makes?

Posted by uthetha ituvi
Oops, I obviously meant the p910 not being not enough of an improvement, for me, over the p900.
Gotta..get..more...caffeine...

Posted by brix25
@uthetha: Quite liked the look of the first Sendo's ...unfortunately they were never available locally, Sendo X which by all accounts is a good phone is also not available locally. I fell in love with Ericsson with the T39 and then the SE T68i just went out and killed every other make in 2002. Have seen a couple of Sagem's but nothing that kept me distracted from my precious.

Posted by Tahir Ally
Sendo will be available from Vodacom SOON.Its being tested on Vodacom network and i will post as soon as they are available. The SA mobile business has not reached SATURATION.When Vodacom starterd business they told shareholders SA market will be saturated @ 19 million mark in 20 years. All Vodacom shareholders were laughing.Well 10 years down the line we already on 24million users in SA.Vodacom CEO Alan Knott Craig SA will have 30 mill customers by early next year and with this type of growth we must not speak about SATURATION YET in SA.....Makes you think isnt it

Posted by uthetha ituvi
It certainly does....considering the total SA population is close to 44 million...

Posted by Tahir Ally
I think its 60 mill.I am not sure

Posted by brix25
@Tahir: I think it's 44 million. Honestly I don't think this market will reach saturation soon. There's perhaps another 10 million subscribers out there. Icasa is also considering licencing a 4th network...which should indicate this market is far from saturation. Btw, will we get the Sendo X?

Posted by mario2002
Does this number count in all the illegal immigrants ? ;-)

Posted by JK
its 60 mill....

isnt sendo and sagem available on cell c???

Posted by brix25
@786KBR: We're in the region of 44-45 million...check up stats.gov.za for the latest figures. Don't think this figure includes the estimated 2 million illegals.

Posted by JK
MMMMMM lets see in the 98 census count it was 44 mill and infact couple weeks on the news i heard its 60 mill and questioned it, and it is in fact 60 mill...

ne way i was saw a blackberry from MTN..... its MTN branded with stickers and the menu was yellow(MTN)... is mtn branding their phones???? coz their 3G phones mite also be branded!!!!!

id rather have a voda brand phone than a mtn one....

if its true...

Posted by brix25
@786KBR: I think MTN started branding some of their phones last year. I saw a Samsung E710 branded with an "MTNloaded" sticker on the back.

Posted by CodeMaster
I don't condone the branding of phones, but the Vodafone branding isn't to bad (if you forget about the restrictions).

The icons could be a little more colourful, with not so much red

Posted by JK
THE MTN branding is exactly the same on the blackberry... just yellow.

but i think it had 3 more icons compared with a voda 1....

Posted by Tahir Ally
Well it looks like everyone is branding phones.Mr Brix have to buy branded phones or he is going to buy a GREY IMPORTS.............COME ALIVE WITH VODAFONE LIVE...........HOW ARE YOU.

Posted by uthetha ituvi
Well on that note...
@ Brix, have you read the 'News From Me' thread yet?
SE REFUSING to let ANY network brand the w800i. It'll apparently have lovely generic firmware.
Hope these facts are true...
We all know that to get any network settings is a simple request from your chosen network and receiving all the settings via a few sms's, as I have done countless times in the UK and several times in SA with a wide range of phones, incuding unlocked 3G-capable 7600's.
Long live the w800i!!!

Posted by Rhino8
Long live unbranded phones.

Posted by Tahir Ally
The w800i does not support Edge or 3G and i dont think local networks will promote this phone..............HOW ARE YOU

Posted by brix25
The only thing I hate about my phone is the unnecessary Vodacom images that can't be deleted. Contrary to what Tahir says I believe that consumers will have the choice of unbranded phones, it will cost slightly more because they would not be subsidised by a network. Long live freedom of choice, that's what's South Africa is about.

I can delete everything from my phone except one sony ericsson ringtone.

I hope you are right bout the unbranded phones.

Posted by brix25
@Rhino: On 2nd thought there's 2 ringtones I can't delete. On branded phones don't think everyone will love them...so subscribers will get an option to buy an unbranded phone, maybe 5 months after it's release on a network...eg: V800=Z800

Posted by JK
Is this guy crying about 2 - 3 voda pics that cant be deleted???!!!!

the ringtones are se ringtones so thats their way of keeping it on the phone...

everythings gonna be branded wether you like it or not....

eg; voda buys phones from the manufacturer, it goes to the warehouse, the are blank with no software, then voda and the respected reps will load the software on the phone individualy then wrap it up and sell it!!!!!! i know coz iv done it a couple of times...

so everything IS branded, vodafone however changes the firmware and relieves some features which is STUPID... in this case a branded phone is a bit of a waste...

but vodafone phones i think are are loaded at vodafone... thats why vodacom cant load voda live on an individual phone ie K700... but it is possible but i think at vodafone headquarters!!!!

mp3 is software and can easily be deleted or overwritten...

Posted by brix25
@786KBR: I think branded phones are inevitable but it all depends to which level it's implemented... You could go for the slight approach that the three networks have adopted or u could go for the Vodafone Live approach.

Posted by Tahir Ally
Here is the beauty of VODAFONE LIVE:What ever Vodafone live handset you buy the menus are the same i mean interface. This makes life easy.In otherwords if you buy a SONYERICSSON OR A MOTOROLA ON VODAFONE LIVE all menus are the same. All new phones that will be released on Vodacom network will be branded....Vodafone Live....,How are you.

Your starting to sound like a broken record. Ffs.
So we have all got to get branded handsets.... Which sux.... But will get used to it.

Posted by Tahir Ally
VODAFONE LIVE! and HOW ARE YOU.Are trade marks of VODAFONE.You will hear and see these saying more often.................SonyEricsson V800 already in short supply.Vodacom did not expect to sell the entire shipment in 1 week.Next shipment will arive in the 1st week of May05............Vodafone Live! HOW ARE YOU.

Posted by brix25
@Tahir: When are you getting your Vodafone branded phone?

Posted by Tahir Ally
I might be getting my V800 next month or never. The problem with me is WHAT I KNOW IS DANGEROUS like for eg All current 3g handset dont have HSDPA and Hsdpa handset should be shipping soon + where i am there is NO 3G coverage and i will get coverage soon. The nearest 3G mast is about 25km away from me which went online last week Friday...........INSTANT MESSAGING COMING SOON TO SA VIA FANTASTIC .Instant messaging is cheaper than SMS and works over GPRS.I am not going to give you prices but all i can is its about 25cents a message or cheaper. You can buy 1 at a time and never expires.IM will launch in 3 weeks time

Posted by Tahir Ally
Testing for double posting.Iknow how to reply just after i reply

Posted by brix25
Sorry to burst your Vodafone bubble but several phones already available support IM with Yamigo acting as a gateway.

Posted by Tahir Ally
Fantastic1 got nothing to do with Vodacom or Vodafone but this company will be launching it with Vodacom. Its the only SouthAfrican company that will promote IM.SMS @ 25cents for local and international SMS or They might launch @ R120 for year and send unlimited IM.Coporates will get better disc Yamigo only has 20 000 members. The company Fantastic1 uses have 20 million members. Just wait for it to be launch

Posted by mario2002
People why are you bothering with Yamigo and wait for IM to be introduced and pay 25 cents a message and all this crap? Now listen to this - if you have the right phone (s60 motorola, samsung, nokia) you can use AgileMessenger for free (pay only for gprs/edge) You can connect to any other cellphone or desktop pc.You can log DIRECTLY to msn, yahoo, icq, aol and even the mighty jabber (using the jabbers own protocols - for the ones realising the advantages or understanding what I am talking about) Also you have ptt anywhere in the world (voip - protocol) you can instantly share files and folders/pictures etc. Also another small and sweet S60 appliction has full irc implementation ! Again file and picture sharing and all that ! Jabber is my favorite for networking to my work's mainframe (SAPS) And the best part is I can do all this for over 2years now ! Apart of Tahir with his P900 you people can only dream about all this. Please buddies don't take it as a insult but as a mind opening speech !

Posted by Rhino8
Sorry to burst your bubble @ tahir, but i can already send free voda to voda sms via gprs, data rates this low it works out to bout R0.01 per sms, and i aint talkin bout email to sms. And with the right subscriptions you can send internatiol sms for as little as one sent.

Posted by brix25
Tahir Yamigo is just a gateway...you can chat to anyone of your MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, etc if they're online.

Posted by Tahir Ally
With Fantastic1 all you need is an GPRS and Java enabled phone. Here is what this company will offer:

Would you make up your mind already?

Posted by brix25
Tahir can't seem to understand that people hate paying for something they can get for free.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@Brix i dont know what you going to do when you buy your next phone.Vodacom phones are branded,MTN is said to be doing the same thing. The reason you have to pay because the networks wants to look after themselves and there tradepartner.I WILL KEEP ON SAYING THIS UNTIL IT GOES INTO YOUR HEAD "ONLY VODAFONE GIVES YOU FREE BROWSING VIA VODAFONE LIVE".When you are browsing for your free stuff, you are paying for browsing and downloading.Vodafone only charges you for the content NOT FOR DOWNLOAD.All Vodafone live handsets have the same interface. You said people like FREE STUFF WHY MUST THEY PAY FOR SOMETHING WHEN THEY CAN GET IT FOR FREE.Did you know that there are 1billion sms sent in SA every month and Exactmobile turnover in a month is R45 million. My point is people will still pay and there is business for everyone

Posted by brix25
LOL... No, even if I get a branded phone on contract will simply flash to it's original fw. You and a couple of robots might love similiar interfaces but I like variety, that's why I use SE and not Blokia. Can't comment on the money Exactmobile makes but they certainly ain't getting a cent from me, good luck to anyone downloading R50 games that can be downloaded for free by just using two brain cells and Google. Ok, keep repeating the marketing propaganda they've fed you... I'm not buying it.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@ Brix you said you love SonyEricsson interface well i got news for you.All VODAFONE LIVE handsets interface is the same as SONYERICSSON.You said you hate blokia and dont want to be a robot because the menus are the same on all Nokias.THATS WHY NOKIA IS THE MARKET LEADER because all there customers says NOKIA IS SO EASY TO USE AND IF THEY BUY ANOTHER BRAND.They have to learn how to use the new phone.Vodacom struck GOLD with VODAFONE just for this one thing.Yes Vodafone live menus will have some enhancement as time go by but they simplify the phone.............The problem with you i think is,You did not own or use a VODAFONE LIVE handset thats why you dont know how nice it is.

Posted by brix25
What's the topics that are most popular on Esato? De-branding branded phones. Overseas networks do it but I'm constantly hearing about how posters hate the Vodafone branded handsets and the Live menu...next time I'll try and play around with a branded phone but I doubt I'll be blown away.

Posted by Tahir Ally
The only reason people want to debrand the phone or dont like branded handset because they will love to change networks and a branded handsets have the mms and gprs settings of the network you buy it from.

Posted by Rhino8
You just said it yourself tahir..... Ppl like variety and a branded handset takes away your freedom to use whatever network you desire. With a vodafone handset vodacom can push call prices up, and ppl would just have to pay up, coz they cant use anything else.
Only reason exact mobile makes money is coz of dumb ppl.
Searching and downloading a good game wont cost you R50 anyhow so i cant see why i should pay.
Maybe me and brix will have k700 for life, but i AINT going branded.
The advantages is so littl
