@ Mario 2002.It looks like you had the phones before the manufactures or you were in the future. In 1993 we had no cellphones and the p800 and p900 was only made available about a year now.

Why is it that MTN hardly updates their website? I need info from them but their site has no recent news.

I think its because they are using all the money they can lay their hands on to develop their 3G network. No new ads, no website updates, no nothing.

what if mtn gets 3g and edge!!!!!

voda will be in a litl kak!

Posted by mario2002
Buddies listen to this possibility : After a long discution on IM with a old buddy of mine from Korea, the following seems reasonable to become reality. UMTS/3G has been a huge loss of money in licence fees and still needs even more money to install/build new repeater-towers to cover the same area as GSM.(About 3x as many !) A better option seems to be when implementing EDGE for the next 2-3 years at very little expence and then installing WIMAX for hi data connections when it will be available. No new towers need to be installed and using Voip even voice calls can be made on WIMAX..70Mbps and 50KM are the WIMAX specs. What do you think about this ? Especially in SA seems to make sens .

Posted by JK
WHY wait for wimax... 70mb/s!!!!!! 3g isnt a once of thing 3g speeds is like a standard Vtec... its fast but can be modified to be 10x faster.... the fastest 3g is about 1-2 Gigs per sec!!!!!!!!!

TODAY someone from Vodacom told me MTN will launch 3G in April..........Vodacom only got 3000 customers for the Vodafone mobile connect card.

Posted by brix25
3000 customers is quite bad considering all the marketing that has gone into 3G.

Posted by Rhino8
Well vodacom should advertise 3G as competing against telkom. Coz the data rates is quite competitive with telkom dial up.

Posted by Tahir Ally
MTN WILL BE LAUNCHING EDGE IN APRIL. IT will cover only 20% of MTN coverage.Visit www.mybroadband.co.za for more info

Would anyone consider that local networks in their haste to adopt 3G may have bowed to pressure from international suppliers like Ericsson buy technology that is yet to prove itself outside Japan.

WiMax, iBurst and a slew of new technologies still being developed will ensure that 3G is old hat before it has even reached 5% of the South African population.

3G might be good in rural areas where there's not much of a telecommunications infrastructure but in urban centres people wanting broadband connectivity will be spoiled for choice- that choice might not be UMTS/3G.

The challenge for phone companies like Vodacom and potentially MTN would be to slash their rates to competitive levels- once new competitors come on stream they would've already captured most of the market.

The fact that Vodacom have only convinced 3000 people to buy up the Vodafone mobile data connect card should be an indicator that their prices are ridiculous- even if a lot of freebies are thrown in.

Just give me cheap data- at least cheaper than the nearest competitor and I'm happy. Right now though a 3G phone will have to wait.

Oh BTW the PSP is being launched this autumn so I suggest all game freaks start saving up, saw the Nintendo DS going for R1399 at Makro, worth it, I don't think so considering the games will cost about 399.

@ Brix Wifi,Wimax,IBurst,Sentech will not beat the mobile operators.Sentech and iburst customers are having shit loads of problems.I am not say 3g customers are not having problem but if you read and surf the net you will see customer who are not using 3G are complaining, they are more offline than online.IBURST AND SENTECH rolled out coverage before Vodacom. But Vodacom has better coverage than them just on 3G.Voda is going to upgrade 100 sites to 3G in next 9 months.Iburst and Sentech have 2500 subscribers each.IBURST MAX SPEED IS 1meg a sec.IBURST and Sentech you have to pay about R2800 for modem..Voda giving them for free on contracts.Voda will have 2meg a sec just now than Voda will have HSDPA max of 14.4 meg a sec. When new tech becomes availble the cell companies will always lead.WHY BECAUSE THEY HAVE PLENTY OF $$$$$.Vodacom SA only has to increase its market share by 1% to pay for its entire 3G INVESTMENT and thats easy for them.3G prices will come down .

Posted by Rhino8
Well i said it bedford, and im saying it again.... If voda got prices to compete with telkom, which is in 90 percent of cases the only know connection to the net, it will take off.
You use your phone as a modem, so no matter where you are, you got a connection. And then vodacom should advertise it as a competitor to telkom.

Posted by JK
telkom owns part of vodacom, didnt you know that!! but not for long...

Posted by CodeMaster
I actually thing that it would be a good thing if Hellkom sold their shares to Vodafone...

Tellkom is holding Vodacom back, and I believe the Vodacom could then be a real competition to Telkom. What would Vodafones share be if they bought out Telkom, about 50% ???

Just my 2 cents worth.

Posted by JK
SOMETHING like that... i heard that some shares will be for voda staff.

Well articulated point. I am yet to find a justifiable reason for any GSM network rolling out 3G on the continent, especially taking into consideration the cost of setup and the rather harsh tariffs passed on to subscribers as we have witnessed across Europe.

I might be wrong, but i heard that telkom owns 51% and vodafone 35.... Will have to make sure bout that thou.

Posted by brix25
People have been talking a lot lately...Vodafone wanting to buy the whole of Vodacom, MTN a possible takeover target from an overseas operator....

First off since it's my business to be informed about current happenings...The Telkom CEO-Sizwe Nxasana- has vowed that Telkom won't sell it's 50% interest in Vodacom because it's of strategic importance to the future of Africa's largest telco.

Talk of MTN being a takeover target is mere market speculation- they would like it to happen but it's unlikely to happen if the possible buyer is willing to part with billions of dollars.Yes, that's what MTN is worth.

OK, that's my two cents.

BREAKING NEWS:Vodacom will have HSDPA from this month. It will deliver speeds up to 2mbps when launched.HSDPA max speed is 20mbps.HSDPA is like EDGE for 3G.HSDPA IS ONLY A SOFTWARE UPGRADE FOR 3G no new infrastructure need. All evolutions on 3G are software driven. When Vodacom gets SUPER 3G which max speed is 100mbps WiMax will be SLOW.Wimax max speed is 70mbps.Super 3G will hit our shores before 2010.Also Vodacom will rolling out 1000 3G basestation for this year.HSDPA is currently only available @ VODAWORLD.................MTN will launch EDGE this month and by the time they launch 3G Vodacom will be away

Posted by brix25
@Tahir:....All that hype and just over 3k people could be bothered! Try the sales pitch somewhere else, coz I ain't buying. Just BTW saw MTN displaying "Y'ello Broadband" in the cell information. They might be launching EDGE as suggested by my dear friend Tahir or better still 3G.

Posted by Aalpha001
MTN's entry into the 'broadband' arena is long overdue. So much for the talk. We need action.

Concrete action for that matter.

Super 3g is just a new dream on old paper.20Mbps is only reached at a few kilometers from the repeater tower (on paper for now as I mentioned above ! ). WIMAX gives 50Mbps+ at 50KM+ ! And the cellphones will support it in 16-20 months ! (nokia at least) Tahir, 3G technology is a few years old by now (envisaged/designed in the middle '90) We only getting it now because of political and economical (it bubble bust) reasons. The ingeneers have learned from their mistakes and WIMAX is not only a better technical design but is able to use just about any frq. spectrum you throw at it,thous giving the possibility to the ones who implement it (not only cell companies ! ) to take the wind out of the politician's sails.3G has already been paid for by the cell companies so it will be implemented. But I think to say that in 2010 you will surf the net on 3G at 100Mbps in Karoo is a bit of a 'long shot' :-)

@Everyone,

Does anyone else have problems with the Esato login and auto-login?

I have tried to use it in Opera and IE 6, with the same problems. The auto-login feature does not work, and I am unable to login manually, or edit my profile. There has also been a problem with my post count, as it has always only shown 1, although today I see it jumped to 2.

When I post a reply, I always have to put in my password. This is becoming rather irritating.

Anyone else having these problems???

Posted by Rhino8
I aint having any login problems, auto login works fine and every thing on my "broken" k700 using html light.

Posted by Tahir Ally
Maybe The 3G pamplets are distributed @ an intersection near KBR 786 daddys Vodashop. Now YOU KBR 786 must stop advertising here.
