Id say take it in Hobbs, there's definetly something wrong there, sounds like its faulty hardware you're dealing with.

At the same time, isnt that what happens when you flash an incompatible baseband? Could just be your BB, did you flash it all back to stock SE 2.1 before loading 2.3?

Posted by Hobbs
I flashed it back to the original Vodacom 1.6 Donut firmware so I could update when Vodacom released Gingerbread. The baseband is correct-2.1.71

LMAO, Tsepz & Kryptik, ya I'm going to have fun teasing about that with the staff when I get back to work in a few weeks' time.

The nearest riot area was fairly close to my work, but fortunately we stay in a sleepy dorpie about 11 miles outside of Greater London. There's usually more going down my left nostril than in Hornchurch.

Posted by Dups!
It's quiet here these days.

@wanqs

Glad to know you and yours were not terribly affected by the riots.

@Hobbs

Hope you get sorted with your phone boet.

@Tsepz_GP

I see you're giving iOS fans a hard time over at M-R. I laugh every time you take a stab at them. Watch it cause I may be using the iPhone 5 this year

Those travel advisory and Mugabe comments cracked me up!

Thats realy good then.

Dup
lol, you know i used to enjoy going to M-R and reading many of their posts good or bad, but in the past few months they have been so bitter and all anti-Android as it has made mince meat of their OS choice, i got sick of it, i love a good debate but all those guys do is troll, and they absolutely hate it when you point out negatives in their OS choice, so it makes for some good fun poking here and there.

My main issue is actualy with the two WP users synn and ud, their attitudes and fanboyism makes me

Posted by Dups!
I haven't paid much attention on ud but synn...

Man, I just can't stand his patronising ways. To be honest with you I also am losing interest in those forums cause all they do, like you said, is troll. They sound like women complaining and nagging (glad this SA thread has no women folk or I'd have some angry women on back with this comment)

I still think esato is pretty decent compared to quite a few sites. I have just become a member of Crackberry (in anticipation of getting myself a Blackberry) and being there gives me headaches.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Even the debates here at Esato are way more civil, i think part of what makes M-R so hostile is Elder Murtazin, he's pretty much set the vibe there, when he was Pro Symbian you had tons of arguments between Symbian Nokia users and SE Java OS users, and now he is Pro Android so ynu have lots of Android vs. (iOS, WP, Meego etc...) arguements.

I can imagine, are there a lot of arguements and fanboyism at Crackberry though?

Funny thing is that XDA Developers you have WM, WP, Android and iOS forums yet not much hostility, except between ROM cooks.

You're so right about the negative effects of Eldar on M-R.

Crackberry is full of fanboyism it is unbearable and unbelievable!
You get very few people who use their brains and discuss issues but the rest will eat you alive if you say anything against their beloved RIM. I've actually written a few scathing posts about RIM and Blackberry but thus far haven't caught flack from the fanboys, actually, a few people liked what I wrote.

If it wasn't for the portrait QWERTY and touchscreen I honestly wouldn't look at Blackberry. I have learnt to tolerate my 9700 but I don't really like it.

I try my best to be objective about something I like and not be blinded by my love for it. You know how I have criticised and continue to criticise SE despite it being my number one favourite brand, that goes for everything else I like and I hate it when people act out of fanboyism.

You just reminded me, I am a member over at XDA as well. I haven't been there in a while. Yes, I also think they are not bad as well.

@DUPS Unfortunitely not bud.It still f**ks out.I have no free time at the moment to sort it out so its sitting in the cupboard for the time been.

Posted by Dups!
Sorry about that Hobbs. You were thinking about taking it in, that seems to be your only option at the moment.

Posted by Hobbs
Dups Going to try one more thing before sending it off.Going to Vodacom 3G Lounge tomorrow and asking them for a new simcard and then going to do a repair via PCC.If that doesnt work they can try fix this Gingerbread issue.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Dups
I may be joining you at CrackBerry, due to peer pressure (something im generaly immune to) i will be getting a BB, my mum is getting a new one in October so i asked her to give me her old 8900 Curve so i can use it for BBM, all my friends are using WhatsApp because of me its getting out of hand lol, so had no other choice, as i definetly am not waisting my upgrade or saved up money to buy a BB, although i came alarmingly close to getting a Torch through a friends "contact" but it just didnt make any sense, and id be screwed if it was faulty.

Hobbs
Eish, i hope you're able to sort it out soon, if you can try find out if there is a SSS Cellular in Cape Town as they are the ones who repair the SE Phones in SA, things should go quicker if you go straight to them.

Posted by Dups!
My problem is that I'm a QWERTY addict and I have not too many choices when it comes to P1i-esque devices.

I also find that the P1 keypad is the best I have used on a phone thus far, my 9700 just doesn't compare. SE screwed up by dumping that keypad, it truly is amazing once you get used to it.

I am waiting for RIM to confirm or even deny that the 9900 will be upgraded to QNX cause that is what has made me think twice about getting it even though I love its specs (for a Blackberry, that is). If they say no to it getting QNX then I will wait for their QNX enabled Bold Touch. I loved playing with their tablet and I felt the new platform offers better usability than OS 7.

I have a feeling you are not going to like using the Berry, I know I am getting one for the keypad and touchscreen but if it has QNX I will start enjoying Blackberry.

Posted by Hobbs
Dups &Tsepz No luck after repair.Sending it in to Vodacare.

Posted by Dups!
Hard luck, Hobbs. If it's any consolation, think about you getting back an X10 with Gingerbread. It will feel like a new toy.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Dups

Hopefuly they dont do to OS7 users what they did to OS6 users as they said the entire range of currently available BBs wont get OS7, hopefuly QNX wont require more than 700mb RAM and 1GHz CPU, i doubt it will though, not even Android is that bloated.

I have a feeling you're right, tried thdm 8900 for a few hours yesterday and i just didnt like it, ive been spoilt by the X10s huge display, smooth touchscreen and excellent 2.3 UI, it was like i had taken a step back, but BBM is my only motivation, the X10 will remain my main phone until i upgrade to another Android next year, probably the Nexus Prime or the dual-core SE, either way my next phone needs minimum: 4.3inch 1280x720p display, 8MP camera, dual-core CPU and 1600mAh batt.

Posted by Dups!
Lol, I'm not the least bit surprised. Blackberry is dull and unimaginative and if you have used other OSs then you will not like what Blackberries have to offer.

There are contradictory statements from within RIM it seems. One of their guys said that QNX requires dual-core processors while the other said from 1GHZ to dual-core so I'm waiting to hear a clear statement from within RIM.

If it is from 1ghz then the 9900 is ready but if not then I guess I will have to wait.

Just returned from SA. What an awesome time in EL and Jozi.

So Steve Jobs resigns from Apple. Eish, how do you replace a guy as good as him at the helm of Apple?

Posted by Hobbs
@wangs pleased you had a good time in EL and Jozi.

Always feel so shit after leaving my phone at a Vodacare for repairs.Lets hope it is fixed quickly and I can get down and stazrt enjoying the Gingerbread update.

Posted by Dups!
Can't believe the RIM's Playbook has just been released here in SA! I have played with it a month ago, a colleague who is a Blackberry fan bought one in the US a while ago.

@Hobbs

I just started thinking about the last time I sent a phone in for repairs and am shocked to realise that I have never had a phone break down on me. The only time I sent one was the Ericsson R320 which wasn't broken but needed a software upgrade back in 2001.

I'm sure by the time your X10 comes back you will love Gingerbread.

I find the Nokia 5800's cam performance fairly limited, but I'm quite happy with the quality of this particular pic. Check out the vehicles used... Recession? What recession? LOL:

BMW 5series police cars??? UK police got it good, our cops are now rolling in Chevy Sparks lol

Dups
Hopefuly its 1GHz requirement, would be realy ridiculous of them to leave OS7 users behind so early, or will the QNX and OS7 phones co-exist i wonder? As much as i dislike BBs i am excited about the QNX devices, more so than i am about Nokias WP phones, SeaRay doesnt seem all that exciting to me, what do you think?

Hobbs
Hope they take great care of your X10, luckily it doesnt seem like a very complex phone to take a part and put back together, they will probably fit a new motherboard on yours too, they got my X10 on a Thursday morning, the following Monday they were done. Only prob is that your IMEI will be different, and even that isnt such a big deal.

Got an SMS this morning.

'Good day.Your handset is ready for collection from Vodacom Repairs Greenpoint.'

Excited, left work early. While driving back to Cape Town I thought to myself,a Job number was allocated to a technician at 13h00 on Saturday. They close shop at 13h00.Got an SMS at 10h21 this morning. That gives that technician 2 and a half hours to have fixed my phone.Hmmmm, something not adding up here.

Get to the shop and they give me the Despatch Note.

WARRANTY REPAIR TYPE-Software Upgrade
REPORTED FAULT-Phone randomly re-booting when connected to the internet, menus and/or applications slow and sometimes hang/freeze temp.
PARTS USED-Quantity:1 PART NUMBER:Adjustment DISCRIPTION:Adjustment

All excited, inserted SIM and switched on the phone.

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

No wonder its working smoothly. The technician had wiped off my Gingerbread 2.3.3 and installed Eclair 2.1 update-1

What a hoot!

What the hell do you say to that.Technician says Vodacom doesnt have the Gingerbread update. They only have the Donut 1.6 software.(WTFing Hell,he had installed Eclair 2.1 and doesnt even know the difference)

Told him what the hell did he think was on the phone when I handed it in on Saturday.Gingerbread 2.3.3 with the Vodacom bootscreen.

How do you argue with someone like that.Im sure if you poked your head around the corner into the technicians office you'll see a troop of trained orangutans working away on our phones.

Left it there and hopefully Round No 2 will be the end of it.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
thats madness, glad you gave him a piece of your mind Hobbs, he finaly met that very customer who shouldn't be f***ed with, hope they sort it out properly, they should just switch the motherboard and be done with it.

Posted by Dups!
I bet those BMWs aren't limited to the standard top speed. Nice way to police!

@Tsepz_GP

Honestly, I am not looking forward to Nokia's Windows phones. Nokia are the one manufacturer that can turn on the heat in terms of a stunning device but they have fallen so behind over the years since the N95 that I doubt they will push the envelope with the 'Microsoft' phone.

I am more than excited about RIM's new platform. I am really looking forward to their QNX Bold, hopefully it will be the exact same size as the 9900 or maybe they will update the 9900 to QNX. If they update the 9900 then I am getting it without a doubt.

Posted by Hobbs
Now I seem to be in a reboot loop with Vodacare repairs.Got another SMS yesterday to say I can pick up my phone.Got there, they had re-installed Gingerbread, the Despatch Note says all is fine, stick in the SIM,load up browser, load GSMArena webpage, half way loaded,BAM,reboot.Run Facebook app,BAM,reboot.Phone switches on,Reboot.Time for my X10 to head on to Advanced repairs me thinks. These Level 1 and 2 techs are giving me a headache.Told them this doesnt seem like a software problem anymore, but hardware related and to send my phone on to the Advanced repairs division.Looks like my phone is taking a trip to your part of the woods Tsepz. If the truth be told when I first installed Wolfbreaks Gingerbread, I installed CPUSpy and when I checked,my phone was constantly running at 997mhz and not the usual 267mhz.Im thinking maybe its that but I aint saying much to these guys cause this X10 has been seriously tinkled with and Im acting DUMB.ROM,whats that? FLASH,sorry..you've lost me.lol Not stressed about any of this anymore. It must just get fixed.

Lol Hobbs, our X10s were doomed from the very beginning, we both own units from the 1st batches which all seem to have faulty motherboards, the CPU sitting at 997mhz, reboots and faulty charging/usb port are very common, some have had all those issues at once.
Glad they are sending up, probably sending up to SSS Cellular in Boksberg, thats where mine went, they know what they are doing.

Since my K850 i stopped dealing with Vodacare, i go straight to the manufacturer, with thdm X10 SE-SA on twitter said i must email their PR person, Ronelle Hendriks, she then got DHL to pick my phone up, drop it at SSS and then return it to me, i thought there would be a SSS Cellular in CPT to, they are the official repair company for SE.

@Wangs £100 the Boks take this RWC.

Posted by Hobbs
Samsung Galaxy Note.I'd get one even with that 5.3 inch screen .

Posted by Tsepz_GP
I like the Note to, but what i'd get is the new GSII-LTE, 4.5inch display and it has true 4G LTE, i'm guessing we are very close to getting 4G coverage by networks if Samsung are doing this.

Hmmm, tempting bet Hobbster.. lemme mull over this, LOL. I realise that the AB's don't have the best record in world cups (Protea Syndrome? LOL), but they just gotta be faves on their home soil.

Posted by Dups!
@Hobbs

I gotta side with wanqs on this one, the Boks for me have been stuttering too much lately and I just don't them defending this trophy.

There have been instances where a team struggles only to come alive in the finals, let's hope this will be the case with the Boks.

@Tsepz

So, are you getting the GSII  LTE? I'm asking cause of the new rumours about the SE Nozomi due in March. I feel they could at least have released the damn thing now in December. Damn SE!

That sounds like a monster of a phone for this year and not next year, you don't want to have to fend off Samsung at the MWC with a phone that has similar specs as a 2011 Galaxy SII LTE. I see SE being hit with a better phone by Sammy at the same time of the Nozomi release. I just wonder if the Nozomi will be LTE.

Posted by Hobbs
Dups I wouldn't bother using the Tri Nations as a benchmark.Boks all the way.My second team (I always have a backup incase of disappointment) are the French. They so deserve a WC Final win.AB's on home soil.Theres a positive and a negative there.Lets hope they cave into the pressure but something tells me otherwise that history will be repeating itself. And dont forget this years Tri Nations winners,The Aussies. They are playing some fantastic rugby.Bring on RWC 2011.Its going to be a cracker.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Dups
I'm only upgrading next year June/July so i'll probably go for the GSIII-LTE, knowing Sammy it will have an even more powerful chipset (quad-core maybe?), and with Sammy having recruited Cyanogen and focusing so hard on software its going to blow Nozomi out the water.

SE are in big trouble, Samsung and HTC making big moves (HTC +Beats Audio deal, Sammy +Cyanogen) and there are SE releasing the same thing in a million diff flavours, hardly being competitive in the high end, with gimmicks like xLOUD and Exmor, its just sad to watch thought id upgrade to another SE Droid e.g. Nozomi next year but as you pointed out Nozomi has 2011 specs, SE are falling behind quickly. Companies like ZTE, and HUAWEI will be the death of SE IMO.

Posted by Dups!
I had been using Ericsson phones for a while before the joint-venture and I can tell you they were technology at its best. I don't like Sony for dragging SE down, all they contributed to SE were the brand names and camera modules. Ericsson remains the heart of SE and it is sad that it is being killed by a company like Sony and not really by the competition.

Let me tell you what Ericsson has now. They own 50 percent of ST-Ericsson and have been manufacturing processors for a few years now. Nokia has used those processors in their flagship S60 phone before the formation of the Symbian Foundation and are still going to use ST-Ericsson's older U8500 dual-core processors on their upcoming Windows phones.

This year in February ST-Ericsson announced the NovaThor series of dual-core processors based on ARM Cortex with PowerVR series 6. Those are already available now. The dual-core Nova A9600 runs at 2.5Ghz while the dual-core Nova A9540 is at 1.8Ghz. Why SE doesn't link up with the other parent for these monstrous processors is just beyond me. Instead they sign up with Qualcomm which is heavily linked to HTC. What's the rationale behind that because they will always play second fiddle when they could be in the same position as HTC with Qualcomm with ST-Ericsson?

The Arc S could be coming out with the A9540 at 1.8Ghz while the Nozomi would be equipped with the A9600 plus a 16mp camera while we wait for the quad-core phones which are due around September/October next year.

With that processing power the Nozomi would destroy even the adventurous Samsung.

Dumb, dumb, dumb!!

How do you let so much power in terms of technology slip by and be beaten by the likes of Samsung and HTC?
[ This Message was edited by: Dups! on 2011-09-03 12:56 ]

Posted by Tsepz_GP
oh my word, i had no idea ST-Ericsson had such powerful products, WHY on earth are SE not using them??? Such a shame Ericsson are being dragged down by the incomptitant SONY who seem to be struggling across the board: TVs, gaming, tablets etc... sad state of affairs.

I'm so glad im not the only one who dislikes the Qualcomm relationship, not only are they playing 2nd fiddle to them, but the Snapdragon isn't all that, personally i have always preferred Texas Instruments, since the Nokia N93, to this day their chipsets produce the best graphics and overall performance effeciently, the Motorola Milestone proved that against the Nexus One despite running at 550mhz, so did the N900, and that PowerVR GPU is the best in mobiles, the PowerVR SGX540 1st found in the Samsung Galaxy S is still being used in TI and Samsungs dual-core chipsets.

Would love to see how the ST-Ericsson chipsets fair against the TI OMAP4 series, i remember the N96 ran on a ST-Microelectronics chip, that was before they merged with Ericsson, and apparently it had the best audio and video production of its time, what brought it down was that it was based on ARM9.

Posted by Dups!
True, Tsepz!

I think we had a discussion about processors where I said that I like OMAP better than Snapdragon. I just don't like Qualcomm and their processors. It seems any other processor is better than the Snapdragon. Look at what the GSII's Exynos does compared to the Sensation's Snapdragon, it destroys the HTC in all departments.

I am just wondering who is going to use the Nova A9600 cause that seems awesome.

Sometimes I wish Ericsson could just split from Sony and we get to see real innovation and cutting edge technology. Obviously, Ericsson won't get back into the game of mobile phones as Ericsson as they see no reason since that sector contributes little to their bottom line but I just wish...

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Indeed, i think the many reason why so many manufacturers like Snapdragon is due to the fact that its cheaper and it comes with all the required antennas (GPS, GSM, WiFi etc...), AFAIK.

Would be great to see Ericsson break away, maybe rename themselves, or rename their mobile division? Going by what you've revealed, they could be very competitive, isn't the SONY + Ericsson joint venture up for renewal soon? Hopefuly they end it.

Posted by Dups!
Yes, the joint-venture is up for renewal but I don't see any change in the status quo. Apparently SE has a huge portfolio for next year, way bigger than quite a few players which suggests they are trying to flood the market to increase their presence hoping to increase their dwindling or non-existent market share. I say if there is nothing cutting edge in that portfolio then they are just messing about.

They just need one monster phone for the first quarter and its small upgrade in the fourth quarter to really start making progress.
