sorry Dups, just realised i wrote "Dips" ,me and on screen QWERTY keyboards are a terrible match, luckily i'm now sorted and have good ol' multitap back via HTC_IME, you can even get a p1 style type on-screen keyboard when you get the Arc.
That would be better to have two different network sims cause when Voda have a bad day they REALY have a bad day, for me it's been their HSDPA which can be so ridiculously slow at times, and hen you got days like yesterday and today where you can watch YouTube with no buffering

Hobbs
Cant wait for Gingerbread now, ive tasted Froyo and i want more
Battery life seems better to.

@Tsepz_GP

Don't sweat it, mistakes happen.

I'm so used to the P1 keypad that typing is a breeze, I actually type faster and better on the P1i than on the Bold 9700 so it's good to know that I can have that type of a keypad on the Arc. The headache I have right now is that I can't wait for the phone.

Yeah, I think I'm better off with two different networks. I remember back in 2001 Vodacom was out for almost two days nationally after some serious storms and MTN guys were having a field day laughing at us and calling our phones useless with a useless network.

It's good to know that you guys are having no problems with your rooted phones. In fact, it's great that you find them X10s better.

@Tsepz or Hobbs

Tell me, how many volumes and vibrate alerts does the X10 have?

The P990i and P1i have these extremely wonderful volume/vibrate alert settings that I love and use very often and I'm hoping SE hasn't changed that.

You get completely separate volume and vibrate alert options for calls, messages, emails and alarms.

When I'm really, really tired before going to bed at night I turn off message sounds and their vibrate alert leaving only for calls. This is very helpful. Basically, I can turn either the volume or the vibrate alert or both of calls, messages, emails and alarms.

Another question, does the Android market have an application to limit who calls you. The P1i comes with an option called 'Accept calls' where I choose who comes through when they call, everybody not on that list is rejected. This is an old Ericsson feature that I use every night when I go to sleep, only family gets through when I'm sleeping.

Thanks!

LMAO Dups; I've been a good boy, I promise...

So which sea is Nokia jumping into tomorrow, off their burning platform,...into The Sea of '7' (Windows) or the Android Ocean? I've been reading that it may be the former (i.e. The Microsoft and Nokia Empires Strike Back) but personally I'm hoping it's the latter.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Eish, i'm not sure how i feel about Nokia jumping m WP7 or Android, i also think it will be WP7, but what will differentiate Nokia if they do go with WP as MS have a lot of control over what WP7 manufacturers do, IMO, NOKIA should go all in with Meego/Maemo, and do something creative and different, they have the money and brand recognition, and it will fit in with their "computer in your pocket" idea, they had a good thing with the N900, wish they had produced and supported more Maemo smartphones.

I dont realy like this idea of them trying to fit-in, it makes them look desperate, this could finish them.

Posted by Hobbs
join the party whatever it takes Nokia. wm7 or Android it doesn't matter. I don't care anymore about brands tsepz. just make me a good phone.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Its not about brand Hobbs, i just dont like them joining up with WP7, i think its the easy way out, it would be better if they worked on something new and a bit different, they need to reinvent themselves and IMO, Meego is the way, its even more open and powerful than Android. MS may restrict them too much and they may totaly loose their current users, but who knows, it may just work, its a big risk though.

Posted by Hobbs
At the moment I like the design of SE and Android as my OS of choice. Come 2011 who knows it could be Nokia as the design I like best and WM7 as my OS of choice. See what I mean. It doesn't matter.

Posted by Hobbs
Tsepz Even if we were stuck on these Froyo ROMs Id be a happy camper. But yeah let's see how the Gingerbread development goes.

Posted by amawanqa
@ Tsepz and Hobbster:

Both very valid points made. Perhaps Nokia needed to 'sell' Maemo more to the public, they can't afford to be half-baked with an OS that they already started developing, albeit more powerful, and then petered out with it, not when you've got Android, 7 and IOS being so well-supported and well-established.
The CEO's writ hints heavily that they're gonna jump onto something already established.
Look at ; dumping their smartphone platform and joining the Android fold has surely been a success story of note? Nokia is of course far bigger and influential, so who knows which route they decide to take..
Isn't HTC owned by Microsoft? How will Nokia joining 7 impact on Microsoft's HTC handset sales? Having said that, HTC seem very quick to churn out new handsets or evolutions of existing ones, and Elop eluded to this as well in his statement..

That's true Wanqs, i didnt consider that, WP already has the developers, app store, office and internet facilities built-in, so it wont cost Nokia too much join, and they wont have to start right from the beginning, not to mention MS control OS updates and internal hardware (Memory chips and CPUs), so it's all there already, it may just work VERY WELL as we all know Nokia make excellent hardware (Camera, RF, display etc...), so it could be a great match.

Htc could be in trouble, but they have such short announcement-to-release periods that they may be a big problem to Nokia, it's going to be very interesting, there's no predicting what will happen.

Windows Phone will be Nokia's primary OS: http://www.allaboutsymbian.co[....]as_new_strategy_and_struct.php

Its a big change Tsepz in the mobile arena and I think we need something out of the ordinary to excite us again (things are getting a bit boring imo) Microsoft Windows 7 also needs a bit of a liftoff and who better than to fuel the whole thing than Nokia,the Giant.
I'm excited about the marriage

Its been great, only issue is that the Android2.2 browser is a battery guzzler when web browsing via EDGE and HSDPA, so i found Opera Mini5 Beta, which is the one that actualy liked b4 the Opera Team made it worse.
I love how fast the Camera is, i just got back from the Pharrell Williams & N*E*R*D concert at Standard Bank Arena half an hour ago, and my X10 was a star when taking a few pics, Camera popped up in no time and pics were taken fast with absolutely no delay. The battery life was great, despite the odd Tweet, Pic take, a few calls and sms it only dropped 8% in just over 7hours, very happy so far, but i am going to update to the new version of Cyanogen released yesterday, today (sunday) for the camera and other minor improvements.
How about you?

Dups
Sorry we missed that. Android has different volumes,yep:

Vibrate is down to each app e.g. SMS, call, facebook, twitter etc... all you can do in each turn it on/off for that specific app, is that what you were looking for?

Agree! I never laughed so hard for a long time. What's next?

@Tsepz

Exactly what I was looking for, thanks. Those volume and vibrate settings are very handy for me on the P1i.

What about call filtering? Can one get an app in the market that lets you reject certain calls or does the X10 also come with the 'Accept calls' pre-installed as in the P1i?

Posted by Tsepz_GP
No problem
I'm not sure if what i'm seeing in Call Settings is part of the custom ROM tweaks or a standard Android2.2+ feature as i am seeing the option to Blacklist, but otherwise there is indeed a free app called Blacklist in the Market that allows blocking sms and calls from numbers in the list.

Posted by Hobbs
Dups Blacklist also appears in my Call Settings. Maybe its a Froyo thing.

Posted by Dups!
Thank you both! I'm now even more restless to get the Arc.

@Tsepz_GP

I was just ranking my favourite OSs and the list is interesting, looks like the following (in order of importance):

1. Maemo. I can't say Meego cause we know very little of it.
2. Android
3. Windows and Blackberry' OS
4. Web OS
5. iOS

The disturbing news is that Intel and Nokia aren't working closely together as they should. Seems Nokia is doing things without consulting Intel and rumours are that Meego may not make it beyond the phone that is going to be revealed today. Really sad cause I was more than likely going to be getting a Meego phone now that I have decided to have one full touch phone plus a Blackberry QWERTY/touchscreen phone- yep, I've decided to stick with RIM and my next P1i-esque phone is the Blacberry Dakota.

If there is a Windows phone I would buy it would be from SE or Nokia. I quite like what I've seen of Windows phone and I can see myself with one in the future. I think Nokia will bring us great Windows phones. I'm also looking forward to the iPhone 5, that should be interesting. I wouldn't mind getting as I'm sure it will be more of the iPhone I was waiting for.

Web OS needs some time, hopefully HP can make it a powerhouse soon for me to consider.

Symbian, IMO, was screwed by Nokia and I blame them for the mess surrounding Symbian.

RIP my once favourite OS.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Ah gee, this whole Meego thing didnt feel right from the very beginning, Nokia should've stuck to Maemo and pumped more resources into it, it realy had a lot going for it.

For me WebOS will remain probably my favourite, i watched a Palm Pre2 review the other day and it's just so frustrating to see such a great OS being put on such average hardware, although that HP Pre 3 looks great, that OS is just not getting the attention and implementation it deserves, hopefuly HP will put it on the map.

Windows Phone is definetly very interesting and it will be great to see what MS and Nokia bring out, part of me is still not sure if it was the best decision by Nokia, let's see how it works out. Some are suspecting that Elop who is an ex-MS exec may have been the "Trojan Horse" sent in to Nokia to use them to get WP to a wider audience whilest killing off the market leader Symbian... MS dont exactly play fair with competitors (remember what they did to Netscape?) and partners e.g. Sendo, let's see how it all goes though.

Posted by Dups!
I agree, Maemo had great potential. I really hope they can salvage the situation with regard to Meego though I fear it may not happen considering Windows phone 7 is now Nokia's primary OS.

I am keeping an eye on Web OS, hopefully it makes good progress. Having the number one PC manufacturer in the world behind them is already a big plus, let's see what happens.

A 'Trojan horse'? Eish! Considering that Microsoft doesn't like competition it may not be so far fetched a theory. When you think about the rather average sales of Windows phone 7 roping in the biggest manufacturer to push the OS you start to suspect that Elop has Microsoft directives to fulfil. Can you imagine how many Windows phones Nokia will ship within the next two years? Windows phone may just jump from nowhere to the top 3 in just two because of Nokia while Samsung, HTC and maybe SE add to those numbers.

Funny I was just reading that. I don't know Tsepz, they left it too late. The Blackberry Dakota has filled that gap, I don't think it is such a good idea to be carrying two droids with me, I'd quickly get bored.

I have my mind already made up, the Arc and the Dakota are my next phones. Obviously the Dakota is for next year in April or February when I take the early upgrade route on my second contract.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Ya, that sounds like a better combo (Arc and Dakota), the Droid Pro has quickly become ancient with Samsung and LG's announcements, even compared to SE's actualy, that 320x480res is for low ends now.

Ive found my upgrade:
1GB RAM
32GB mass mem and expandable
Super-AMOLED Plus display
USB-OTG (kick in the gut to Nokia)
1650mAh batt
HSDPA 21mbps!!!!
Exynos dual-core CPU
Android Gingerbread
HD1080p@30FPS with HDMI
http://gsmarena.com/samsung_i9100_galaxy_s_ii-3621.php

Ive learnt my lesson, and will be moving to SAMSUNG there's just no way i would take any of the SEs over the GS-II.
I'm waiting to see what HTC announce but i doubt it will be anywhere as powerful as the Sammy and LG Optimus 3D.

Posted by Dups!
If I wasn't allergic to Samsung I would try that phone.

Honestly, it is the best specced phone and I don't see HTC matching that. I just don't see the software side being that good considering it is Samsung.

Other than that it is the perfect phone. Looking forward to reading your thoughts and experiences with it.

If you're not that concerned about things like Social Networking, Web browsing, Apps etc...and want a very well built phone with an excellent camera, with some decent software then go for it, overall performance is okay, and definetly improved from previous versions like the N97 (S60v5) and N95 (S60v3).

Happy belated birthday Tsepz!

Thanks Dups!

Lol, something weird happened with my X10 between today and last night, i got a call from someone who i dont want to talk to, they called like 3-4times and i ignored the calls, i had meant to put them on the Blacklist on my phone but fell asleep and forgot, so i remembered to do it earlier today but got to the Blacklist and found the number there already its the 1st time its called me since a formatted and flashed my X10, and before that i hadnt used Blacklist before, so i guess the phone figures you dont want that number to contact you??? Very nice, but now what happens if i just cant answer the call but dont want to Blacklist that number realy odd, and there doesnt seem to be any setting to adjust how it works

Right, Da Wanqsta's off to Bologna, Italy, tomorrow morning for 3 days. (It's only 2-odd hours' flight to get there from the UK)
The 5800 will be used for taking plenty pics, I'm pretty sure.

Have a great time Wanqs! Looking forward to those pics!

Posted by Dups!
@Tsepz_GP

That's a bit awkward. I guess the phone automatically blacklists the number after three or so missed calls, but like you rightly questioned what happens if you just want to ignore the person for just that moment?

On another note, I'm really loving the Dakota after the latest leak on Gsmarena. The thing is metallic and the same wide size as the Bold 9000. I love it!

@wanqs

Have fun boet.

LOL, just the other day i was thinking how i miss the sometimes heated debates between boinng, Whybe, synn, Dogmann etc... that happened here at Esato, until today when i logged into Mobile-Review Forums: http://forum2.mobile-review.com/showthread.php?t=97698 now that Symbian and WM are done, its now WP vs. Android, Dogmann being his errm... "unique" self got the gigantic Dell Streak so he's repping the droids, synn on the other hand had/has a Milestone and was simply not impressed by Android from the very beginning it seems and so is repping Windows, it seems they've had many run-ins, im reading through a few right now the one ive posted above is the most recent.

Just read that synn vs Domain head to head and its drivel. Glad I'm not in that headspace. Sony and Android don't give a Shit about me so they will never see me waste my words over them in a heated debate. Love the design of my X10. Android is the OS for me at this present moment in time. End of my story. What's your story Tsepz? lol

Hope you having fun in Italy Wanga.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
i just found it hilarious, but i do enjoy reading or participating in a good debate as long as we stick to facts and not get emotional and start throwing insults, i often learn a lot about things through reading or participating in them, but the above was just shocking and hilarious, both parties are so full of knowledge and are so informative but they let each other's personal feelings get in the way and they end up looking like two spoilt kids crying cause they arent getting things their way.
As for my X10,im loving it more than ever, Android's openess and the great hardware in the X10 make it so sweet, i actualy see no point in getting a new phone this year, especialy with Android2.3 being cooked up at XDA for the X10.
