Have loads of fun Tsepz and keep safe.

Posted by Hobbs
Well done Tsepz.Good job.Holding thumbs for you.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Thanks Hobbs, cant even sleep, just keep checking Twitter for the other reviews, lol.

Posted by Hobbs
Tsepz
Where do I go to check some of the other reviews? Is there only one winner?

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Hobbs, go on twitter and search for #N8ReviewZA, there should be a flood of them today as they have to be in by midnight.

Posted by Hobbs
Tsepz
Just read three more N8 reviews and this one I found a very pleasant read. #zagoma took the short and sweet route and it is very effective..
http://www.micordotonline.com/product-reviews
The other two sucked. (Paulo_Archie_GP & zyler) You've got their numbers.
Can you imagine if you win.A free N8.Wow.Didnt know much about the handset.Didnt care much for Symbian. But when you start reading about the hardware that N8 carries, you cant help but be impressed.
Thats where you did a great job.
Who knows what RSANokia are looking for though.
Its anyones game.(except those 2 (I mentioned earlier)
Taking photos of phones resting on a opened up newspaper. What the hell.

After 3+ years of heavy P1i use (hayibo..where does time go?!) , I've been seemingly retrogressive here, but the handset that I seemed destined to get over a year ago I have now purchased. Yup, I know it's old hat, a platform that is very much passe in the wake of Android etc etc, but I've just bought a Nokia 5800 at a price I couldn't refuse. Brand new for £165 (approx R1700)!

Er... P1i pic:

I was also considering the N900, as there are very few smartphones with both integrated stylus and decent cam with auto-focus and both are very much top priorities for me. I'm not bothered with it being a 3.2mp item a la the P1i.

I'll still keep the P1i with another sim card in it, which has other PAYG perks.

Thing is, I'm also getting myself a Fujifilm Finepix S2500HD with 18x optical zoom and HD video recording next week, which is on special at one of the online shops here for £140 (approx R1500) so the cost of both the camera and new smartphone is the same as a N900 or N8..

Yeah and with the 3 bikes taking a few shekels to run and insure each month, I've got to strike a balance with things. I'm sure I'll be happy with the 5800, although I'm missing the P1i's scrollwheel already...
Still, there's some nice touches (excuse pun) to this smartphone. I'm a happy wanqa.

Congrats Wangs on the 5800 Cant wait to see the pics you are going to squeeze outta that cam.Great price.

Posted by amawanqa
Thanks boet. Ya squeeze out indeed. There's the same low light 'noise' (blue granular bits) when I activated the camera in the house earlier, very much like the N73 and 6500 Slide that I bought for a family member, but I'll check which f/w it's on and take it from there. Not too bothered with this though, as it's an excuse to experiment with settings etc to get the most out of it and the P1i's still around as well.
The P1i's 3.2mp cam may still hold some cards with some macro and low light options, but it's not fair to judge until I've put it through its paces properly.
But yeah, I'm going to have some fun eeking what I can out of that li'l cam module.

Since I've been living here, I've never seen snow falling as early in Winter as November..until today:

P1i pics taken today:

Posted by Hobbs
looks very cold.what temps are you getting late evening/early morning?

Posted by amawanqa
Not quite arctic; about -1 degress or so, with a few degrees above during the day. More snow on the way over the next few days.. Next week it's apparently going to be milder..

The 5800's battery is currently having its initial charge, so it'll soon be taking pics of the white stuff etc outside.

How you enjoying your 5800 so far Wangs?

Posted by amawanqa
@ Hobbster:

Busy downloading apps n' stuff at the mo.

HandyPaint was my first download

Love the screen lock/unlock slide on the sie of the handset. Find the UI easier to navigate than the P1i.
Haven't fiddled with the cam too much, but I'll be putting it through its paces over the weekend, I'm sure.

Would love to see one of your HandyPaint sketches or painting.I remember seeing one or two paintings done by Steve Litchfield and was really impressed with what you could do with those of kind apps if you are creative and have an artistic ability. They were pretty fantastic.

@ Hobbster:
Ya I'll upload some when I eventually get round to creating a few Rembrandts on the 5800, LOL.

Taken from GSMArena today:

"Ovi Maps 3.06 beta now lets you download maps directly to your phone

Ovi Maps has an upcoming update – v3.06 – which is still in beta. Nokia is still working on it and they’ve reported a few improvements – the most notable change is that you can now download maps for offline usage directly on the device (without having to use the Ovi Suite on the computer)…

This new feature is called Update and lets you download country maps on the phone over Wi-Fi. It’s a convenient feature – before, you either had to use Ovi Suite or manually browsing over the areas you want (so that Ovi Maps will cache the data).
The rest of the changes are mostly cosmetic – the old My Position and Search have been combined to into the Map option. It remembers the old map position viewed. A Back button has been added to Favorites, a tap and hold brings up delete and edit in collections & routes.
Anyway, those are only the most recent improvements to Ovi Maps 3.06. The improvements already in place include new maps (with public transport lines), pinch zoom (for Symbina^3 only) and others.'

Sounds like you pretty much covered using the 5800 for GPS Navigation.Nice one.

Just downloaded and listened to Wave Of Mutilation-Best Of The Pixies Wangs and theres another band that were brilliant. Can see why Kurt Cobain was inspired by Mr Black. That guy also had a wild animal inside him.Great band.

Posted by amawanqa
'I've kissed mermaids, rode the el nino
walked the sand with the crustaceans
could find my way to mariana
on a wave of mutilation..'

Gee Hobbster, that brings back memories. That and Monkey Gone To Heaven amongst other absolute classics by The Pixies. Brings back sooo many memories of my student days in PE in the early '90's... Sigh...

You seem to have such happy student day memories Wangs.Suprised you can remember them.I think Tsepz student days are going to be one big foggy blur
Wave Of Mutilation is also the name of their Best Of album.Ive got Surfa Rosa,Bossanova and the Ultimate one of the lot,Doolittle, but I felt like having all the classics on one album.Plus there were a few tracks I havent heard before.
I'd love to go back in time and do it all again.sigh (this time with less chemicals involved though)
Nah,that was half the appeal.NO FEAR!!!!!!!!!!!
Bring on the Double Dipped Purple Ohms.
Only jokes.
Those day are over.

P1i pics (yup, still in use, although scaling down as I use the 5800 more and more):

Posted by Hobbs
The second shot looks like a Near Death experience.

Posted by amawanqa
LOL Hobbster. Yeah there was this bright light and then...

...er I took the pic.

Posted by amawanqa
The 5800 had its second charge tonight. Updated the firmware, updated Ovi Maps and a few apps to boot.
Really starting to enjoy the 5800 now; took a few pics as well but like a lot of other 3.2mp nokia cams, they tend to over-expose quite easily... gonna have to do some fiddling with the settings to get the most out of it.

Posted by Rhino8
Well the 5800 is great. And even though I might be putting mine into semi-retirement today when I get my LG Optimus One P500. I am starting to love android more and more every day i work with it.

The Mrs said that she want to use the 5800, and I am happy with it, BUT she has to know that I can and might just take it back any time.

Posted by Hobbs
Wangs
Eagerly awaiting pics with fiddled settings

Rhino
Ive also swallowed the Android pill.Cant see myself using anything else at this present moment in time

I aint too concerned with that, the main reason that i am getting it is that it comes with wifi router from the box... This phone is going to me by internet connection at home for me and the wife on wifi.

Posted by Hobbs
When are you getting the LG?
[ This Message was edited by: Hobbs on 2010-12-09 04:08 ]

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Lol, indeed Hobbs, its all good though, i may be getting a HTC DesireHD this weekend or next week.

Posted by Hobbs
So I take it thats goodbye X10.It would be for me.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
We'll see the fact that the X10 is being letdown by SE with late OS updates realy sucks though. The thing is i like having just one phone i use, thats why i packed away the 5800, so yep it may just mean good bye X10.

Posted by Hobbs
I thought so.I only like having one phone too so its understandable. Doesnt matter though, its still a Android handset so we will still be speaking the same language. You will just be a software version or two ahead. RIP Tsepz X10.

OOPS yea, LG - not so good (me being a sony fan and all) I have decided on the vivaz pro. Picking it up today.

It was a really tough choice between the android powered LG and symbian powered Sony, and sony won in the end. The selling point on the LG to me was the out of the box wifi router, but I am pretty sure i can find the software on IPMART.

Here we go Wangs.Email for the 5800 sorted.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend, just arrived in hartees an hour ago, and it is ridiculously hot, 33 degrees last i checked.

Posted by Hobbs
Tsepz So thats how you were going to get the Desire HD.Maybe he will still find one.

Fantastic skyline shots Wangs. Not as sharp as the P1 though but it will do.You still going to do some fiddling Im sure so the pics will improve with time and experience.

Posted by Hobbs
Rhino not that it matters now anyway.(or it never mattered in the first place )

Yep, there is no way in hell we are going to buy it cash here, hopefuly he does, for now my lovely X10 will carry on serving me well, by the way do you ever wish you had taken the White X10? The more i see it in white the more i wish i had taken that, only problem is that white doesn't have the rubbery batt cover the black has.
