Taken from The Register:

'Symbian needs your help. Please

Symbian won't run unless a lot of volunteers get their hands dirty, with internal sources confirming it's most likely to be three months before the code can compile.

There are two issues here: getting the source code to compile, and getting v3 (once it's compiled) to boot into a GUI. The former needs an open source toolchain, based on GCC, but this throws up around 150 errors, and won't produce a working executable.

Before jetting off to Barcelona, Symbian's Mark Wilcox dropped us this note:

I'd be pretty disappointed if it took us three months to get GCC compatibility. If no-one but Symbian Foundation staff worked on it then it could take that long... We're trying to work with the community to fix these errors. We've already had one prominent hobbyist and some of the Qt team at Nokia volunteer to get involved (they have "creative Fridays" with 20% of their time to work on any relevant project of their choosing). This really is a case of many hands make light work. It's not the most interesting work though, so motivating volunteer effort is part of the challenge.
A source explained that the 30 packages which refuse to compile are packages 'owned' by Nokia, so it's very much a spare time effort for Finland's finest. "Three months is realistic," said a source close to Symbian. The Symbian Foundation claimed it had released the source "four months" early according to its release schedule, but if the code doesn't compile, then it's not ready for prime time.

As for the Symbian^3 graphics, which were shown in Barcelona in demos this week, Mark explained:

"Getting the new graphics adaptation working... is fairly ambitious for the end of February, although there are still plenty of unknowns at this point - it could be working next week! However, the graphics is purely our effort and its not easy for someone else to step in and help (we have some support from Nokia with their new code of course), whereas the compiler compatibility progress will be somewhat dependent on the level of volunteer effort."

So there you have it. Google and Microsoft have billions at their disposal, while poor old Symbian is calling for volunteers, and all hands on deck. You have to sympathise.

One developer and Symbian fan sounded pessimistic:

"Seeing Symbian effectively put to sleep like this is a shame: one of the few remaining alternatives to the Cult of Unix crashes off the speedway, leaving only Microsoft as the remaining competitor. I don't think this is healthy for the industry," he told us.

To complicate things, Nokia and Intel created a big splash, by combining their Linux efforts into one very ambitious project called MeeGo. This will be targeted at everything from phones to set top boxes. That's another temptation for a prospective volunteer.

Symbian denies the early release of the code - which doesn't compile - before Barcelona was timed to achieve executive's bonuses. Sources put this in the region of six figures per suit.'

The relentless Apple March continues:

(taken from GSMArena):

2009 world handset sales ranked, iPhone OS eats WinMo

Technology researchers from Gartner have come up with their annual report on mobile phone sales, 2009 edition. And it's an interesting read.

In short, 2009 phones sales have remained flat despite the economic imbalances but there are some pretty interesting market share shifts.

Unless you've lived in a cave for the past twelve months, you won't be surprised to learn that Motorola and Sony Ericsson took the biggest hits this year, while Apple, Samsung, LG and RIM had one hell of a year.

Table 1
Worldwide Mobile Handset Sales to End Users in 2009 (thousands of units)

Company 2009 Sales 2009 Market Share (%) 2008 Sales 2008 Market share (%)

Nokia 440,881.6 36.4 472,314.9 38.6
Samsung 235,772.0 19.5 199,324.3 16.3
LG 122,055.3 10.1 102,789.1 8.4
Motorola 58,475.2 4.8 106,522.4 8.7
Sony Ericsson 54,873.4 4.5 93,106.1 7.6
Others 299,179.2 24.7 248,196.1 20.3
Total 1,211,236.6 100.0 1,222,252.9 100.0
Source: Gartner (February 2010)

Nokia also took a dive, dropping two percent of total market share (and 5.5 percent of smartphone market) but their market leadership remains pretty safe. They shipped 440 million handsets - a volume that almost totals that of all other companies from the Top Five (470 million). Things are even more convincing in smartphone terms where Symbian accounts to 47 percent of all sales globally.

However Apple have managed to double their market share, shipping 25 million iPhones, compared to 11 million in the previous year. RIM also noted a healthy 48 percent increase pushing the number of sold handsets to 34 million.

Table 2
Worldwide Smartphone Sales to End Users by Operating System in 2009 (thousands of units)

Company 2009 Units 2009 Market Share (%) 2008 Units 2008 Market Share (%)

Symbian 80,878.6 46.9 72,933.5 52.4
Research In Motion 34,346.6 19.9 23,149.0 16.6
iPhone OS 24,889.8 14.4 11,417.5 8.2
Microsoft Windows Mobile 15,027.6 8.7 16,498.1 11.8
Linux 8,126.5 4.7 10,622.4 7.6

Android 6,798.4 3.9 640.5 0.5
WebOS 1,193.2 0.7 NA NA
Other OSs 1,112.4 0.6 4,026.9 2.9
Total 172,373.1 100.0 139,287.9 100.0
Source: Gartner (February 2010)

When it comes to smartphone platforms, the open-source Android has the biggest market share growth shipping on nearly 6.8 million devices in 2009. That's more than 10 times better than the 0.6 million in 2008. Another year like that and they might just take the second spot (or even first if Symbian doesn't up its game urgently).

An interesting trend is that the iPhone OS managed to reach a wider user base in 2009 than all the various versions and reincarnations of Windows Mobile. Now that should tell you something Microsoft, you better get your back into Windows Phone 7. We're waiting...'

'Nokia No.2 is so sorry for N97 debacle
Apologises to general public for leaky flagship

CEO confessionals are all the rage now, but Nokia's No.2 executive has apologised for Finland's 2006 winning entry in the Eurovision Song Contest ("Hard Rock Hallelujah" by Lordi), the lack of jokes in Aki Kaurismäki's dramas, and the Nokia N97 phone. Actually, no - we made the first two up.

But Anssi Vanjoki said the £500 flagship "has been a tremendous disappointment in terms of the experience quality for the consumers" and promised it won't happen again. That's quite a change of tune from September's Nokia World show, where he touted great sales numbers.

The EVP of Markets told All About Symbian's Rafe Blandford that while commercially it had been a success, the reception has obliged Nokia to revise its QC and product development.

The N97 was rushed to market last summer to go head-to-head with Apple's iPhone 3GS. I wasn't the only reviewer who wanted to give the underdog a fighting chance, but found it underwhelming. It was full of bugs, some serious, and memory and usability issues. The X6 I reviewed last month rectified very few of these.

Vanjoki also said that Nokia had kept relying on an out of date Symbian for too long.

But there's bad news if all you want is an updated version of the N95, a solid conventional slider phone. It doesn't really figure in Nokia's plans anymore - or at least not for high-end premium devices.

"I think what we have seen is that the usability of the different services is much more about large screens and direct access to things, rather than pull down menus and things like this. So I think that these hybrids are in particular, the ones where you have full QWERTY and beautiful large sized touchscreens," he says.'

Posted by Tsepz_GP
You should see HowardForums S60 Forum, the N97 and N97 Mini threads are just filled with complaints and people jumping ship. Those Americans dont play, when something is sh*t they drop it with no hesitation and move on. Many hardcore dedicated S60 users some of who helped me do mods etc have all moved to NexusOne, Droid or iPhone3GS due to the N97, hopefully Nokia have learnt their lesson, a part of me doubts they'l fully recover especialy in the USA, the iPhone3GS, BB 9700 and NexusOne are absolutely killing them.

Taken from The Register:

'Android app brings in $13K a month

It's not just iPhone developers who get rich

One Android developer is earning more than $400 a day from his find-your-car application, proving it's not just Apple fans who'll pay for basic apps.

Much has been made of the millions awaiting those who decide to develop for Apple's iPhone: the UK government even sponsored a help guide. But Google fans will be pleased to hear that there's money in Android too with one developer reporting earnings topping $13,000 a month for an application that remembers where you've parked your car.

Car Locator works by recording when you park, using the embedded GPS, then alerts you when the meter needs feeding and provides a distance and direction to guide you back. It's been selling in the Android Marketplace for the last five months, and is now bringing in some serious cash for developer Edward Kim.

There's a free version, which Kim reckons has been downloaded 70,000 times, but only a tenth of that number has downloaded the paid version. That version was originally priced at $1.99, but then bumped up to $3.99 without halving revenue (resulting in greater income from fewer customers).

That bodes well - iPhone users are a lot more price sensitive, though that may change if the Android Marketplace gets swamped with $1 apps, as iTunes is. Lots of cheap applications lower the perceived value of all, which is something of a bugbear to iPhone developers.

So it seems that mobile application developers can make a living without kowtowing to Apple's increasingly capricious acceptance policy, which has got to be good news for everyone.'

Lol Gola,:o Dam! Is the Satio screen made of glass? I thought all Resistive screens were made of soft plastic at the top where you Touch and hard under that anyway hope it doesnt take long to fix bro. Hobbs is not going to be impressed
What do you think of Vivaz by the way? If its at the right price i think i may go for it...

Posted by gola
GUCCI
nah, it's plastic, but I'd rather it was glass. Well it's doing to take awhile 'cos I want to get it insured then claim afterwards, don't know how that is going to turn out...
Yeah, all I could think about is HOBBS' words eish.
Ya, i noticed that you like the Vivaz, well if I had a choice between it and the N900, I'd go for the latter. I don't know much about the Vivaz other than it looks good, it's got HD recording and a different homescreen to the satio that for some reason has everyone on Esato excited. What do you think about the rumoured 12mp Nokia?
[ This Message was edited by: gola on 2010-03-07 22:27 ]

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Haha! Nice! Well when you insure its not like they come and look at your phone, we insured all the phones over the phone, all they asked was the IMEI, Model and price of the phone,so that shouldnt be a problem. Is it still useable though? Fixing a resistive shouldn't be as expensive as a capacitive, but then again its an SE,hopefuly the insurance cover that.
Part of me wants the Satio but the battery is such a major deal breaker
Yep dig the Vivaz in Black, i would also take a N900 without any hesitation but that thing is going to be expensive,if the N97 is 8g's im sure N900 will be like 10,so Voda will ask for a large pay-in.
Not sure yet though, i wonder when NOKIA will announce that 12mp, and then there's also the Moto Milestone and Htc Hero that i like a lot

Posted by gola
Ya, it's readable, the crack is about 2cm at the top right corner, but it breaks my heart every time I look at the screen, it's going to stay like this for a while until I go home, I hope
Well you get used to charging the phone once daily, it's not that bad...
I checked the n900 the other day on the net and it was R6000, I was expecting more.
Did you just Motorola, lol, yeah sure it's awesome, but it's still a Motorola. The Hero on the other hand

Do I need to unlock my phone first before I can update it?
[ This Message was edited by: gola on 2010-03-07 22:44 ]

Posted by Tsepz_GP
oh thats not bad then, i had this image of the whole screen cracked in my mind.
Thats not bad then, hmmm...we'll see,in that case i may have a Satio come August, is it performing as well as the W900 in terms of music quality though?
R6000 for N900? where did you see that?
Haha! Yeah, true, still a MOTO, i dont think its coming to SA though, are MOTO even still here? It seems to be the most complete Android,im not totaly into the NexusOne.
Unless VodaCom have some how managed to get the new Satio update on time then nah,you dont need to unlock, but being Voda i dont think they do, i debranded my 5800 when updating to V40 back in January, its now March and they still dont have V40 apparently. So you probably will need to debrand, just run SEUS and check if the update is available for you though.

Hi Guys.Hope everyone had a good weekend.
Gola Gola Gola.Where do I begin ....... Nah,I won't bore you other than to say sorry to hear that and hope you can get it fixed in quick time and covered by insurance.
Just checked my upgrade dates and I have one in May and one in July.Shocking thing is......I don't care and am going to terminate both.Am I terminally ill? Did I suffer a serious head injury? Have I lost my mind?
This must be the first time in the last couple of years that I haven't run around like a headless chicken.Wow! I'm shocked.E90 and iPhone all the way baby.Like a sensible Wangaman.
@Brix Stormers played well against the Highlanders.Potential semi-finalist? What do you think? Maybe to early to tell.

Wow,what a scorcher here in Cape Town today. We took the day off and I spent it swimming.

Posted by Tsepz_GP
Yes Hobbs, you are indeed crazy watch a couple of N900 reviews and im sure you'll be looking to replace the E90 with it lol,and the 3G with the upcoming iPhone4G.
Speaking of upgrades, i was just browsing EliteMobile and, clicked on Satio, right now its just R800 pay-in on my contract thats a lot of phone for that, going into the Geek details: its the least expensive smartphone running on the high-end ARM A8-Cortex platform, with its TI OMAP3430 CPU, the Vivaz is meant to be cheaper than Satio, so im now realy looking forward to it now i REALY cant see NOKIA doing better than that, the X6 is an option but its just a 5800xm with a 5mp cam and Capacitive display, N97Mini has inherited a lot of N97 bugs, and the N97 is at a ridiculous R2599 pay-in, Vivaz or Satio FTW!! lol

Thanks. Well, with regards to music performance, the volume is the only problem, other than that, all is good
I was wrong about the update, the music doesn't stop any more after checking my airtime. But that annoying beeping sound is still there.
The Satio is a really great phone, I don't see why anyone wouldn't want one, just make sure that the screen always has the protector.

Oh and it's got a brilliant pair of stereo speakers, definitely more of a multi media phone than the Satio. And I love the landscpe to portrait transitions in the photo viewer, otherwise everything else is just in landscape.
