Hope you all had a good weekend.
My 5800 smells of champagne and hubbly after a friend of mine decided she would rather shower me with it than drink it. All seems to be working fine though.
We almost spent the nite in jail for driving under the influence, never again, lesson learnt, a very sobering experience, literaly.

Taken from GSMArena today:

'Symbian^3 OS and a Maemo 6 device coming later this year

According to the Symbian numbering scheme we're at Symbian^1 now, but we won't see ^2 at all - Nokia is jumping straight to Symbian^3. Maemo 6 is coming later this year with at least one new device running it.

Symbian S60 5th edition or Symbian^1 is the OS powering the touch phones from Nokia - from the Nokia N97 flagship to the entry level Nokia 5230. The next version - Symbian^2 - however has been dropped in favor of Symbian^3.

Symbian^3 is expected to come out in the third quarter of 2010. For now it's not clear if older devices will be compatible with the new OS, which will feature multi-touch gestures. We will also be seeing Symbian^4 in late 2010 or early 2011.

Maemo is also getting an update - Maemo 6 is just around the corner (the Nokia N900 runs Maemo 5). Maemo 6 is expected in the second half of 2010, but more importantly there are plans to launch new products based on Maemo 6 - yep, the Nokia N920 could well be on its way. And the use of plural in "products" gives us hope of there being more than one Maemo device coming out this year, despite the rumors to the contrary.

Nokia expects that Symbian devices will overtake S40 devices by 2011 - 55% vs. 35% - and Maemo devices will be 10% of all devices shipped.'

And also from gsmarena a offering from sony ericsson called Aspen.what do you think? me,nothing i'm afraid.

looks nice, runs windows, but doesnt do it for me.maybe i'm just over phones and nothing can get me salivating like i used to.not even maemo.

@HOBBS: That new Aspen is like Jacob Zuma only neutered by a small screen, which takes a way from the touchscreen. Another vanilla phone for corporate types who stubbornly refuse the amorous advances of both RIM and Nokia.

Today I took my E66 into Vodacare @ Century City for repairs to the built-in memory card reader...hopefully I get it back in no time.

Wanted to get a new (cheap) phone but RICA regulations have made buying a phone without an ID and proof of address virtually impossible. So now I'm without a phone coz Vodacare don't have any crappy loan phones.

Comes to think, I should've taken up that offer from Cell C.

Taken from The Register:

'Nokia slashes prices to up market share ante

Rolls up sleeves for imminent manufacturer slugfest

After a year almost in the shadows, Nokia is back in the cellphone limelight and is showing its aggressive face to those seeking its crown.

It has already thrown down the gauntlet to Google with its free mapping and navigation promise, a move that is already shaking up the personal navigation space. In the first weeks of this year, it has also cut prices on its mass market phones and plans heavy advertising behind key media devices like the latest X6 music handset.

With its eyes on Samsung's leap in market share in the last quarter, Nokia seems to be gearing up for a price war, having reportedly addressed some of the rare inefficiencies that were creeping into its mighty supply chain in mid-2009. It cut prices across its portfolio last week, making its 5230 the cheapest Symbian device on the market and going head-to-head with Samsung, LG and Sony Ericsson in the midrange.

Nokia generally reduces prices across its range a few times a year as it introduces new models and adjusts to changes in demand, but this was particularly stringent. Reuters news agency reports that prices were slashed by as much as 10% on a broad basis.

The 5230 is now retailing for €170 ($239) unlocked, or as little as $110 on pay-as-you-go, and its wholesale price is below €120. This makes it hugely competitive in developing economies and in the expected boom area for early 2010 - the affordable open OS handset. This rises in importance as first-time smartphone users and the youth market shift away from featurephones.

The 5230 is typical of the breed of phones targeting this space. It has the same 3.2-inch touchscreen as the popular 5800 music smartphone, and many of the same features, but skimps on a few areas, such as memory, to keep the cost down. It incorporates GPS and Ovi Maps, including turn-by-turn navigation and 3D landmarks, and Symbian S60 5th Edition.

Nokia needs to leverage its huge economies of scale to ensure that pushing smartphone capabilities into the mainstream does not impact its margins disastrously. In the fourth quarter of last year, the average wholesale price of its smartphones dipped from €190 in Q309 to €186.

This will mean keeping its higher margin models desirable, which may entail higher advertising spend in the short term, one executive agreed last week. For instance, Nokia plans to spend "multiple millions of euros" in several key European markets, including the UK, to support the new 16Gb iteration of its X6 phone, and pitch the handset far more directly against the iPhone.

The new device will ship on February 24 and boasts the biggest marketing budget ever for a single product Nokia release, according to Marketing Week.'

ROLMAO!!! The X6 is an over-priced, slightly updated version of the 5800XM...which is only selling like hot cakes because Nokia have dramatically reduced prices and the networks are giving them away to whoever feels like wearing a two year ball-and-chain around their ankles.

But even with all that negativity, I have to concede that Nokia still make good phones even when they were rushed intoi releasing S60v5 to compete against the iPhone. That battle has been lost and like the article says, Nokia will have to cut prices on the mid to lower-end to justify some of the vanity priojects like Maemo. Nokia's newest platform won't find immediate traction amongst consumers and networks but could become a real threat to the likes of the iPhone when leveraged against available apps in the Ovi Store, speaking of which is still very disappointing. But Ovi Maps rock!!

In other news today, (care of GSMArena):

'LG fourth quarter results are out: another record broken
03 February, 2010

LG have just published their financial results for the last three months of 2009 and they certainly have every right to be proud with them. The company has recorded their highest fourth quarter earnings ever, beating their previous best by about 7 percent. The sales of the conglomerate totaled 12.2 billion US dollars, while the operating profit rose to 382 million dollars.

The mobile division fared reasonably well, managing to sell 32 percent more mobile phones compared to Q4 of 2008. The 33.9 million units shipped give LG a global market share of about 11.3 percent, which is more than enough to reconfirm its status as the world's third largest phone manufacturer.

However the reported mobile phone sales totaled 3.3 billion US dollars, which is a 5 decrease compared to the last quarter of 2008. Its operating profit was 57 million dollars, resulting in a margin of merely 1.7 percent.

LG see their robust growth in North America, Europe and emerging markets (what's that - the whole world?) as the main reason for their market share increase and is targeting a further 19 percent increase in unit sales to 140 million in 2010. We are yet to see though if they will also be able to make more money out of it.'

Lol Hobbs,ya NOKIA's support for S60v3 FP1 phones seems to be quickly coming to an end after 3years of great support, NOW that FP1 phones dont 'fit' into their future plans. The support for S60v3 FP1 AND S60v5 is like day and night, even the quality of apps etc. . . I thought i'd enjoy having both S60v3 and S60v5 side by side, but going back to V3 on my n81 or e75 is just weird and unbearable. Used a friends n96 yesterday and it felt like a big step back. Ovi Store on v3 is appauling compared to v5.

Yeah GUCCI.I don't really use the E90 much anymore. Was just curious to check out the free OVI MAPS etc Wanted to see what all the fuss was about.Gotten a nice flow going with the iPhone at the moment and am really enjoying it.Once you get a rhythem going with this iPhones UI it is truly a wonderful phone.Forget about specs and multi-tasking and camera ect Doing the job at hand and just the job at hand it is smooth, fast and quite pleasurable.Put me up against any phone on the market in a speed typing contest (except the Nokia 3310 lol) and I'll whip their ass.Love my Facebook and Twitter app, messaging is spectacular, and once you get use to mastering the browser its kick ass. Also jthe iPod on it is top nothch with good speakers. My days of going app crazy loading every Tom,Dick and Harry is over.Im more sensible like RHINO and just load what I need and use on a daily basis.I havent had an opportunity to play on a 5800 or an Android phone at yet so I cant compare.Would love to see what the iPhone 3GS can do with it doubling everything performance wise.
No more upgrades for me until jthe iPhone and E90 die on me and that my friends should be in a verrrrrrryyyyy long time from now.
First contract coming up in July......TERMINATE!

The free Maps is fantastic, even gives weather. In the early hours of saturday morning my mates and i were driving home when we got invited to a house party all the way in Orange Grove lol, there were 3 of us in the car, so it was my 5800xm, friends e71 and anothers e75. 5800 with the free Maps3 locked on to GPS in a second, a lot faster than the other 2, searched for the street we were trying to find as we had no clue where orange grove was lol, within seconds the 5800 had found the street and was giving us voice guidance in a Surfer Dude voice some 20km later we arrived. I think by default these Maps were set to avoid traffic as it guided us through back roads and used main roads least as it could. Overall great stuff, NOKIA realy went all out with the Maps, the UI is totaly different from previous versions, and lock time to satelite is almost instant even indoors.
Glad you're enjoying your iPhone Hobbs. Ive compared the 3GS to 5800xm speaker wise, and the result was 5800 blew the 3GS out the water, i have no idea how NOKIA managed to fit such big and loudspeakers, i think the 5800 is the loudest phone out right now,it is almost unecessarily loud. Im definetly not terminating any contracts but i realy think i should just delay my upgrade,im so satisfied with the 5800, it takes me back to when i got the W800,5800 just fills every need and want, not the best out there but its got it all in one device that weighs under 110g. I see the iPhones, Satios, and HD2s but i just dont care for them anymore, only phone i like is N900, but that is a thick and heavy brick, 5800 just covers ALL that i want in a device, ergonomics is just tops on this thing.

@GUCCI Sound like you are a very happy 5800 camper.Glad to hear. Those OVI Maps sure sound reliable and efficient.Well done Nokia. With the lure of free navigation that is surely going to sell a shitload of phones.I never caught on to Comes With Music.Yes the tracks are free but you still have to pay for data downloading from your SP so for me that cancels out the free.I can get free music any place.NOKIA sure are a force to be reckoned with.I still want a balancing out of market share with level playing fields for the top 3 or 4.I don't like one company dominating the scene.Maybe in years to come but for now I thing the BIG N is going to be on top for a while.
I once had a Nokia 3300 Music phone and boy did that thing have fantastic sound.Nokia's music edition phones are top notch.I cant believe how many cellphones I've owned. Its insane.

Go Symbian!! LOL. Taken from GSMArena today:

'Symbian goes fully open source, it's a free download to all

There have been quite a few rumors about the fate of Symbian, but now the OS has entered a new stage of its existence - its code is now open source. This move began in June 2008, when Nokia bought Symbian and created the Symbian Foundation to take over the development of the OS. And the Foundation has big plans for the future.

Symbian OS is still the most popular smartphone operating system with 330 million units shipped only last year. The Foundation claims this is the largest transition to open source ever and believes it will help speed up the evolution of the platform. And evolution it needs - with the likes of the iPhone and Google's Android OS, which is also open source, exploding into popularity.

The Symbian Foundation includes Nokia, LG, Motorola, NTT Docomo, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, operators Vodafone and AT&T and chipmaker Texas Instruments. Nokia has been the primary developer in Symbian, but plans to reduce their input to less than 50% by the second half of 2011.

This will leave room for a lot more contributors - now that the Symbian code is available for anyone. In fact the source code should be up for download from the Symbian Foundation website starting 14:00 GMT today. The platform includes the OS itself but also things developed by individual members of the Foundation, including the user interfaces.

The Foundation also hopes this move will lead to a faster development of third party apps now that developers are not hindered by so much proprietary aspects of Symbian. They also hope that the open source nature will improve the security of the OS.

So, in a way Symbian as we know it is going away - this is the end of the line for Symbian S60, which is the last man standing after Sony Ericsson gave up on UIQ. The source code that the Symbian Foundation is releasing seems to be Symbian^3, especially since Symbian^1 is actually S60 5th edition and Symbian^2 was dropped.

We are yet to see the impact this move will create on other open source initiatives like LiMo and if it will help Symbian recover some of the lost ground against iPhone and Android.'

Wow, I just got off an SUV of my dreams! No, it's not the X5 M but the 2010 Range Rover Sport Supercharged and does it say opulence inside. The interior, the ride (comfort) and noise level inside are heavenly to say the least. It probably won't drive like an X5 M or the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S but that it is a fully fledged off roader makes me love it better than my favourite brand BMW. Sadly, I wasn't driving but was a passenger and the owner is my brother's friend who is a lawyer. A black 2010 Rangie sport supercharged and a 2011 BMW M5 in my garage is a perfect blend.

Ya lucky fish! Its a gorgeous beast lol! This will make you sick to your stomach but there are a couple of students at my uni who drive those new Range Rovers. You should just pop by when you're in Jhb,just take a peak at its parking lot, one 2nd year student drives a Cayenne GTS ,theres a bunch of M3s, another 2nd year in hotel management has a Carrera4s cabrio, and on my 1st day some chick rocked up in a Maserati, unbelievable, think i should introduce myself lol. Did he floor that Range Rover? Those things sound so good! Im jealous

Damn!!

Students driving those cars?!!

And here I am still driving the first generation X5 that feels old to me now. Gotta go get me the Rangie. I can't believe some students are riding Maseratis, M3s and Porsches. Simply amazing!

LOL, I hope the chick you're going to introduce yourself to looks as hot as the Maserati

No, he didn't floor it he was just cruising but the damn thing is seriously brilliiant! At R1 200 000 it should be!

You gota see it to believe it, BMW 1series is the new Citi Golf, lol.
Those 1st gen X5s are beauties though the 4.4 and 4.8 still do it for me. Has it been reliable?
LOL! She was okay, id pick the car over her any day though
Wow! R1.2mill??? Dam,it must be good, i wonder how much the big Range Rover Vogue is then they are gorgeous cars, as minor as the changes are in the 2010 Sport,it makes the previous one look totaly outdated,it looks a lot meaner-if that makes sense
As much as i love them SUVs my dream garage consists of a MINI John Cooper Works, (the fact that its so under rated and unique, yet can destroy a GTI and ST), and a BMW M3,id be happy lol. Am i the only one who sees no use in a supercar? Unless its a Porsche? Lol

She'd be very offended if she were to hear/read that. It really is a far cry from our days at varsity looking at the new students with supercars. Wow, the world has moved on.

I drive the 3.0 litre version, wish I opted for the 4.8is but finances didn't allow me then. It has been reliable thus far I have to say. The only incident I ever had with it was an encounter with a pothole that damage the rim and that's it.

Yeah, the new Range does make the old ones outdated, I
really dig the Sport Supercharged. I'm with you on the supercars, I don't see the need for them either. I'd always replace them with an M5 or if I were to change an RS 6 from Audi.

'Nokia's free Ovi Maps scores a download every second
Finnish firm continues 2010 mojo reclaimation

Nokia is on a roll after its stagnant 2009, with strong quarterly results and rising smartphone share. Now it says its recent decision to make its Ovi Maps navigation service entirely free, in an aggressive shot at Google, has already been fully justified, with downloads hitting over 1.4m in just a couple of weeks.

"We're averaging a download a second, 24 hours a day," crowed Anssi Vanjoki, executive VP in charge of the critical web services strategy, adding that downloads crossed the one million mark within a week of the launch date of January 21.

This might not generate the direct financial return Nokia shareholders may have wanted when the firm paid a huge $8.1bn for the Navteq mapping firm, but it endorses the strategy of leveraging Nokia's huge cellphone base to build massive support for its web services, which should then drive revenues such as advertising, as well as increased phone uptake.

Vanjoki enlarged on this. "Within a matter of days there is an installed base of more than one million active users all potentially hungry for new and innovative location aware apps. For the operators too, there is a growing opportunity to sell more data plans and a complete navigation package to existing and new customers."

As of January 31, the top five countries downloading the new free version of Ovi Maps were China, Italy, UK, Germany and Spain, said the company. The top five most popular devices installing the download were the 5800 XpressMusic, the N97 Mini and full-grown N97 smartphones, the 5230 (the world's cheapest Symbian handset) and the E72 enterprise device.

The new version of Ovi Maps enables users to store entire maps and location data on their handset for free via the mobile network, Wi-Fi or sideloaded from a PC, so they do not have to be connected to the internet for basic navigation services. Ovi Maps covers more than 180 countries and includes turn-by-turn navigation for drivers and pedestrians across 74 countries, in 46 languages. It also bundles free travel guides from Lonely Planet and Michelin.'

Taken from The Register:

'Touchscreens take lead in smartphone biz
Bumper year for finger-friendly phones

The world's smartphone makers shipped more touchscreen models in Q4 2009 than at any time in the past - and more touchphones than devices with buttons.

During the quarter, 55 per cent of all smartphones shipped had touchscreens. That's just under 30m touchscreen handsets altogether, market watcher Canalys said today.

Touchscreen shipments were up 138 per cent year on year, compared to overall smartphone shipment growth of 41 per cent.

Q4 accounted for almost 40 per cent of the touchscreen smartphones shipped during 2009, a year that notched up total shipments of 75.9m, the researcher said. Some 166.27m smartphones shipped in 2009.

Canalys spoke to 4,000 consumers late in 2009 and found that 60 per cent of them wanted a touchscreen interface on their next phone. While some existing touchphone users said they will switch back to a different interface, Canalys said it expects the overall shift toward touchscreens to continue during 2010.

It said it expects 166m touchscreen smartphones to ship this year.

It comes as no surprise that Apple topped the chart of touchphone vendors, shipping 25.10m smartphones in 2009, just ahead of Nokia's 22.36m. HTC managed 7.73m and Samsung 4.84m. Everyone else, together, racked up shipments totalling 15.82m units.

From a marketshare perspective, they divide up this way: Apple 33.1 per cent, Nokia 29.5 per cent, HTC 10.2 per cent, Samsung 6.4 per cent and everyone else 20.9 per cent.

Not a good result for RIM, but then its touchscreen BlackBerrys aren't as widely seen as the Qwerty models. But a look at the OS figures shows its position to be strong, for now. Symbian was in 47.2 per cent of the smartphones shipped in 2009, followed by BlackBerry (20.8 per cent), iPhone (15.1 per cent), Windows Mobile (8.8 per cent), Android (4.7 per cent) and others (3.4 per cent).

Symbian and Windows Mobile were down year on year, while BlackBerry, iPhone and Android all increased their share of the smartphone OS market.'
