@TAHIR, that's brilliant news. Thanx for the info, bro

Posted by Rhino8
At last, a decent piece of usefull info from Mr vodacom. If i did not have my v800 i would buy me one.

Posted by brix25
If Icasa have their way the K750 and other soon to released phones might be the last ones to be subsidised. @Tahir: What does the branded K750 cost?

Posted by Kryptik
@Brix, would you say a branded phone would be a better choice over an unbranded?

Posted by brix25
@Kryptik: It depends what sort of user you are. I'd have no hesitation giving my mother, who finds sms'ing, a branded phone. For the internet generation like myself branded phones don't make because the challenge of discovering something new has been removed. Branded phones to their credit are cheap, Vodafone will make it's money back through directing users to their portal.

Posted by Kryptik
I know what you mean, my mother makes extensive use of text as well. That 750 deal sounds good, but will it satisfy my need re- MobiPocket, ebooks, etc?

Posted by Tahir Ally
@ Brix if you did not know that Vodafone branded handsets are allowed to browse other sites.Another thing is you dont know whats going on behind the doors of the cell business. What will happen is,the current networks will still give customers a choice of signing a 24 month contract,18 month contract,12 month contract or a month to month contract.Other options are customers buy the phones for cash and get lower call rates. Not forgetting number portability..BANNING OF FREE CELLPHONES will not happen but customers will have other options.Since ICASA HYPED this SAGA so much in the press ,the cell network are signing on alot of new customers+ renewing contracts.Alot of customers think its their last chance to get a free phone.Customers are renewing and signing on contracts like its going out of fashion.THIS YEAR IS THE MOST EXCITING YEAR FOR TELECOMS.

Posted by brix25
Granted my last post didn't make sense...what I wanted to say and what most people on Esato agree is that branded handsets to a degree are more user-friendly.Tahir's got a vested interest in seeing more ppl take out contracts so he can't argue about Icasa's hearings into it. They're trying 2 make the cost of calls cheaper but many don't seem 2 get the point.

Posted by Kryptik
Well, if branding will give me browsing at a fixed monthly cost, as some imply/say, i'm all for it since i spend a vast amount of time online.

Posted by brix25
The unlimited GPRS is the hook by which they're trying to lure customers. If you're not 2 fussed about having network branding all over and inside ur phone then definitely go the Vodafone route. On a side note I see the Blk V3 RZR is selling for an incredible R2099 exc MTN starterpack...that's good value.

Posted by Kryptik
Yep, went to buy a 1100 as a birthday gift today, saw the special on offer. Branding i can certainly live with (i think) I'll need to spend time reading the relevant threads in order to form a clearer picture of its implications.

Posted by sIssIs
I don't know what the hell ANYONE's problem with a branded mobile is???

Firstly it works.

Secondly it's only branded BECAUSE the "brander" and a "big brander" like VODAFONE KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING. They don't brand any mobile... THEY BRAND ONLY THOSE THAT ARE THE BEST AND ARE ONE OF A KIND>

And YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES... Vodaphone's, HAS FREEEEEEEEEEEEE internet NO MATTER what websites you surf. GET IT IN YOUR HEAD PEOPLE.(I am calm for those who don't think so... but it's simpler than simpler: Free internet access with a Vodafone)

@slssl: Before you bust a vein use the search function and see how many people hate brande phones on Esato. The only reason ppl buy them for the most part is because they're cheap.

Posted by Kryptik
S, so its free access AND unlimited downloads? Sounds good if it is... (btw, i hear Valium's quite good...) just kidding, mate. Thanx for your input

@ Brix like Vodacom Ceo said SA cell industry is still the fastest growing in the world and the most succesfull. He also said our rates are one of the cheapest in world. The only country that is cheaper than us is Brazil.Did you know in the UK they pay up to 50% more for an sms than us.In the UK the networks charge up to R25 for 1meg out of bundle. Those countries that have lower call rates have lowest penetration.Again South Africa has the highest penetration and most successfull. If our prices were high than our cell industry should be a FAILURE which is NOT.

Posted by amawanqa
@ Tahir,
I'm not necessarily disagreeing with what you have stated,BUT only people in the UK who 'do not do their homework first' will pay up to 50% more than us.
Some examples:(on PAYG,not counting the quantities of free monthly sms's with various contracts.):
Try beating O2's online PAYG sims:300 sms's for £10 equals 3p to any UK network!(±35c per sms!)

Virgin sms to another Virgin phone is also 3p.

However,to all other networks,Virgin charges 10p.(Only then is it more expensive,if using the exchange rate as a reference.)
Next:T-Mobile is 5p per sms,using 'Mates Rates'.
Tesco:5p per sms to your fave 3 numbers,10p to all others.
Easymobile is about 7p flat rate per sms,if my memory serves me correctly.
The others are mostly much of a much, except the cheaper sms bundles, which I have not quoted.
Methinks I sticketh with O2 when in the UK...
Now MMS is a different story, averaging around 30p (±R3.50!) to 40p (±R4.50!!) ,but how many sms's are sent by the average person compared to mms's?

Well i have on problem with my branded phone, except that i cant use free gprs to access web via bluetooth on pc. But none the less, i used more than a gig sprr since i got the phone a month ago.

Posted by amawanqa
Forgot to mention that SA's international sms's are generally cheaper,if(again) one is purely using the exchange rate as a reference.Almost all UK networks charge around 20p (±R2.30)per international sms, with the exception of CPW's Mobileworld sims(15p),Easymobile (15p) or better still,if you pay a one-off fee of £4.99 with O2,you get ITT (International Talk & Text)for life. You are then charged only 10p(±R1.15c) per international sms...yes,exactly half the price of most of the others.

Now the crazy thing is,as I stated some time ago, with CPW's Mobileworld sims,it costs only 8p per minute to phone a SA landline at any time, yet costs 15p for 1 sms to SA with them.If you phone an SA cell with this sim,it jumps up to 20p per minute, also on a flat rate basis.
Pretty damn good, compared to 80p per minute if you are dof enough to phone SA from a Virgin sim or 90p from Orange.
Now Tahir,do you think I should mention SA's lovely cell network rates to phone foreign cell networks, for comparison?...

Posted by Kryptik
Oh boy, those internat call rates are horrendous, to say the least. Aint it something like R14 per minute? I called a buddy not too long ago using a Cell Sheep sim on the cheapest rate as per operator suggestion, still took a hammering...

Posted by JK
Damn K750 is so cheap, now everyones gona get one

Posted by brix25
LOL@786KBR...if you want exclusivity get yourself a 8800 from Blokia or better still a Vertu handset which comes with a concierge service to cater to your every whim.

Posted by mario2002
I ain't going to get one buddy. I am after a fast internet connection (use the cell as a modem ) . What I want is WIFI/EDGE/3G. I would like to take a nice picture too now and then ,but is more of a play thing then anything als.

Its like the D500... they flying!

@ brix

Yes am using voda live settings.

Posted by brix25
@Rhino: It's obvious that Voda didn't want you connecting to the Internet using their free gprs...instead get yourself a 3G data card and start paying like all other users of the service. Good luck.

Posted by Kryptik
lol @ Brix, where there's a will... I'm sure i read a few posts at Pro discussing Vodafone Live and mobile->modem usage... Any further info re- K750i? I'm one of those who'll probably follow the herd, i.e. a mobile that'll do the job. Altho i'm holding out for a P910i...

Posted by brix25
I'm not a Vlive user ...if there are any cons to use a V800 as a modem with Vlive settings then enlighten Rhino...I think that should make him a happy camper.

Posted by Kryptik
@Rhino, i recall that ppl like Jay Scott and Stergios have dissected the mobile modem issue quite thoroughly, but i've never paid much attention to it since i have so little contact wth the Internet per se. A search there ought, i'm certain, to provide greater clarity...

I had a prototype K750, gave it back and now i want a new one, its voda live.... how do u use mp3's as a ringtone again, on a v800, i tried saving it to the mem card and its still not working...

the k750 will be the same rite???

Posted by brix25
@786KBR: You of all people should know that mp3's can't be used on Vodafone branded phones. You'll need SE's DRM packager to enable this function on the K750. Do you guys have any idea when the K750 is expected in stores? Tahir mentioned contract packages but what will the cash price be?

Posted by Rhino8
@brix

I use MTN on k700 as bluetooth modem at the moment coz MTN is half price.

Posted by JK
@BRIX

Yip, I want an unbranded one!!!!!! My neighbors got one hes only 13!! imported from dubai! lucky bastard...

Anyhow the phone price for civilians is R2900 I think cud be cheaper, but the cost compared to the k700's cost at the time of release is a R1000 rand difference!!!!!!

That's SE for you dropping in price faster than a fat woman tied to a bungee rope. People getting the phone on one of those expensive contracts will be pissed off when it's priced somewhere between R2500-R1900 by Christmas/New Year.

The word on the street to any potential buyer of the K750 is WAIT!!!

Posted by JK
nope they might be dicontinued very quickly!

VERY TRUE

Posted by brix25
@786KBR & Tahir: What might be discontinued? Logic dictates that if a SE is bought for say R3000 in Aug it can't be sold for 3500 in six months time.

Posted by JK
WELL if u wait till the k750 is R1500 ther might not be a k750 available!!! unless u want a used one...

eg the nokia 7610 lasted less than 6 months!!

Posted by brix25
@786KBR: That might be the case with Nokia but it certainly won't be with the K750 and SE in general... Explain to me why you'll still find the K700i brand new in some stores...they're even giving you an ipod mini if you take out a contract.

hey guys!

just got back from south africa on tuesday, i must say the adverts over there are quite cool...anyone know where i can downlaod some...the corsa lite one's expecially! lol

thanks in advance dudies

Posted by Kryptik
So true, even the T610's still on offer on new contracts.... Pity the same doesn't apply to automobile prices, guys... New Merc now for R450k, 6months same new Merc for R150k... If wishes were horses...

Posted by brix25
@tempsonyfreak: Good 2 hear you enjoyed our tv ads. Dunno where you could download them in 3gp format.LOL@Kryptik: Dunno about the T610 still being available which is one hell of a longshot...maybe at Cash Converters:-)

Posted by Kryptik
'strue's bob, one of the Vodashops here had it on offer!!! @Tempsonyfreak, try http://prodigits.co.uk/greggie Follow his vid links, lots of 3gp clips, including some S.Afr advertisements

Posted by brix25
Dunno why anyone would want buy the T610...not that it's a bad phone, just it's java implementation is garbage. PS: Thanks for that prodigits link.

Posted by Kryptik
No probz, bro. I downloaded that Whiskas 3gp clip from one of those sites to which the links lead. My daughter digs the dancing mouse :o)

Posted by mario2002
Does anyone know how many % of the vodacom network is already 3G ? Here in Jeffreys I am still waiting for it.I've asked (phoned) Vodacom in PE and nobody could tell me when I will get it over here. It looks like mainly the 'big' places and their surrounding areas will implement it, the rest of us must be happy with EDGE :-)

Posted by Rhino8
The t610 are indeed still on offer with MTN contract.

Talking bout 3G, i was really disappointed in it last night. Had no coverage at a braai i went to.

Ppl, if you dont absolutely have to use 3G, dont coz once ya used to it, normal gprs is a bloody pain in the a**

Posted by Kryptik
@Mario Voda's got some pretty dowwerige staff down here, bro. Had a buzz from some mates visiting Jeffreys for tonight's cd launch @ Alcatraz, heard exactly the same comment from them i.e. no 3g, etc...
