SAfm had an interesting TechTalk programme last night, quite a bit of discussion concerning Voice Over IP, the feasability of 3.5g and beyond, etc. On next week's show they're reviewing Samsung's 3g offering as well as the new Sony Walkman. Not sure if they meant the actual Walkman or the W800.

Yesterday noticed that Sentech have launched a new broadband product for R199/month. If anyone got more info please feel free to enlighten us lesser mortals.

Voda doesnt have the K750 but the D600 is already finished tested!!!

Good day to all,

We are looking for beta testers for Budwire: a new mobile-to-mobile and mobile-to-web service allowing you to plan events and socialize on the go. Your friends only need to have a mobile phone or access to the web!

As part of our campaign to test on as many handsets and in various regions we are now performing beta trials in South Africa from August 01-14 2005.

The Budwire mobile application installs and runs as a Java-based midlet on most modern handsets. As part of the beta trial, account registration from your mobile includes credits for 10 local messages

Web site: www.budwire.net
WAP site: wap.budwire.net

Please feel free to provide feedback to help improve the service.

Best Regards,
Budwire Systems

@786KBR: E720? It's supposedly the K700 beater but I haven't seen or heard anything about this phone. I think the delay in release of the K750 is costing SE market share in SA...something tells me the networks have a hand in this.

Posted by JK
I saw the E720, what a waste of a phone, its just a e700 with 3g and some other mods... they could have worked on a better design!!!

It would beat the k700, only coz of 3g...

Ja the k750??? so when will we get the w800???
I read somewhere that you flash a k750 with w800 software... can we here in SA???? I hope!

Posted by JK
Voda has the K750, but its voda live (I think its called a D750) but stores will probably get it in bout a week or two!!

and its cheaper than the K700 when it was released last year!!!!!!

and if no1 knew yet, Samsung makes new 512k sim card!!!!

@786KBR: Don't think the E720 is 3G... Check in the review thread, a guy said the picture an video quality is much better than the K700. The D750 is only for the T-Mobile network. About flashing a branded phone to it's original fw, I went onto the Davinci site and seems like the service is not available to SA users.

Posted by JK
Sorry u rite I confused the Z500 with the E720, they look almost exactly the same its like a E700= Bm 325, E720= Bm 330 and the Z500 is the M3 version!

Stupid designs I think!!

the video on the E720 is the best at the moment!!

If i'm not mistaken i saw a thread concerning a 1gb simcard... Probably goin to cost the earth as well...

Posted by brix25
@Kryptik: Don't know about that 1GB sim card when people can't find use for a 32k sim card.
At today's Icasa hearings into handset subsidies MTN and Cell C said they were principally in favour of doing away with them.

Yah, my FST post wit a 6680

Posted by Kryptik
Yep, true that, Brix. As it is now a 32k's now real advantage to most is the fact that it can hold more numbers, phone boots up a bit faster... They're touting the 1gig card as being useful for saving pix, tones, etc...

Posted by brix25
@gilani: How's your experience with the 6680 been so far.

Posted by celltech
Gents I just had to post this pic here, taken with K750i

Posted by brix25
@celltech: When are they expected in MTN stores?

Posted by Kryptik
Oh boy, i want a K750i!!! Or a P910i... Or both :o)

Posted by JK
Whats that blue thing on the left??

Posted by amawanqa
@ Kryptik,
I'm currently close to your neck of the woods,in Addo, attending the Midnight Motorcycle Rally.Strange having a motorbike rally so close to our national elephant park...
Got a consistent 4-bar signal here on the P900. A good mate loaned me his Honda ST1100 Pan-European for the weekend. Not quite my first weapon of choice, but I ain't 'looking no gift horse in the mouth.'

One of the guys here has a 7710,the 1st I've seen in SA.He said he got it for free on his MTN contract,(hell, what tariff will that be to get that phone for free?!),which might explain why I haven't seen the 7710 in Vodashops.(?)
Quite a few people carrying 6820's,D500's and e700/ e720's.Hardly any SE's visible,apart from the odd T630 or P910.Moto seems just as scarce,with a few V-series around.Oh,and one Siemens MC60...
Great to see much of the SA population weening themselves off their long-standing diet of 3310's and 3510i's over the past 2 years...go SA!

Posted by brix25
@786KBR: That blue thing on the left is a Sagem.
@amawanqa: Good to hear your tour through the country is going good. Didn't know the 7710 was available locally...much prefer the P910. Talking about 3310's and 3510i's, the other day I saw someone using an ancient Siemens...those bricks that came out around 95/96.

Posted by amawanqa
@ brix,
Agree with you regarding the P910 over the 7710. I've always found that the beauty of the P-series,compared to say,an I-Mate JAM or 7710,is that you have the OPTION to use it pretty much like a conventional phone with the attached flip-keypad, without having to resort to the stylus so readily.
I'm not comparing other features, but this uniqueness of the P-series suits me,..there are times when you only have one hand free to call with,or look something up,or sms,or whatever...
Also, when occasionally using public transport in London,I don't have to feel asif I'm impaling the screen or re-calibrate my aim every time there's a bump!LOL!

Posted by brix25
Yesterday I saw an immaculate 2nd hand P910 for the amazing price of R2800...very tempting indeed as stop-gap until I go 3G next year.

Posted by Rhino8
One of my mates wanted to sell his p910 for 1500 the other day.

Will sony ever have a symbian 3G candybar phone?

Anybody know where i can get v800 themes?

Posted by brix25
@Rhino: Your mate might be offering his P910 for that ridiculous price because there's a problem with it. Sony don't make mobile phones, when they tried it almost ended in disaster...that's why they merged with Ericsson. New phones from SE are expected to be announced next month...all indications are we'll see the P1000...don't know about a candybar 3G smartphone a la 6680. We all live in hope.

Posted by Kryptik
:o) 3310=Student Card, as my pupils say... The one feature my prospective mobile MUST have is a beeeeg screen for my beloved MobiPocket. Symbian would be great, but the ability to read my ebooks takes precedence. @Amawanqa, easy around the bends, that's a wicked ride, mate

Posted by Rhino8
Nothing wrong with it. Had it for the past 3days and i use a phone pretty hard in 3days. He is not a se fan thats all.

Posted by brix25
@Kryptik: I take it you mean a high resolution screen? An example is the Siemen's S65 which has a massive screen but the resolution can't match my precious.

Posted by Kryptik
Exactamundo, Brix. I'm at a party a.t.m, playing around with a buddy's iMate Jam. It's got some good features, altho he doesn't have an ebook reader for me to draw a comparison.

Posted by brix25
Way off topic... While everyone was either at the rugby or watching it with a cold one at hand I was sweating it out on the treadmill. Good to see the Boks get one over the All Blacks...Have to give it up for their improved defensive play.

Brix, i don't watch tv so had to get the action via the radio, but was also impressed with their defense. Even though i'm not much of a rugby oke i'm proud knowing that we beat the All Blacks!

Posted by amawanqa
I'm really impressed with Voda's coverage at every port of call so far.Currently at a stunning coffee shop called Oppiekoffie along Port Alfred's beachfront,en route back to EL,and the P900's signal bar is fluctuating between 4 and 5 bars.Wanna find out which MTN store in EL stocks the 7710,more out of curiosity to see what they are all offering than anything else.

Does any1 know if da v600i is available yet here in sa? I need a phone ASAP!!! And do ya know if i can brand a k7 wit vodafone software? I want free wap! Its gotta be between da v6 or k7

Posted by zani_003
And how gud is da moto mpx200? Its only R999! Yes i love SE but they only got three smartphones :( if i get da moto then i wil also buy da F5 bak 4 free wap! Advice needed!

Posted by brix25
@brad: Here's advice...Firstly the Vodafone Live settings are locked and there's no way you can access them...so fat chance of branding your unbranded phone which sounds quite strange. The V600i ain't available locally yet...if it was I think Tahir would've made a merry song and dance about it's release and the fact that it's Vodafone Live branded...seemingly the K750 has landed but they're yet to arrive at the stores.

Secondly on the MPx200...from all reports and I can't vouch for them the phone ain't that good because it was the first phone with Windows Mobile, rather go for a Symbian phone like the 3650(poor screen) or the P800( another poor screen) but much better value for money than the Moto...do a Google search if you're unsure bit I'd hate for you to spend a R1000 big ones only to be pissed off with the phones performance.

@ brix thanx 4 da advice man. Im just hatin bein phoneless! Grrr ! P800 aint available in shops ere. Da last shop dat sold it charged R2500! Y not just get da motorola v980 for R400 more or stupid blokia for R2000? And am only a student!

Posted by brix25
@brad: If you want a nice phone, especially when ur a student you'll have to sacrifice. Right now I'm still happy with my precious... I'm not going near a Moto unless it's a Pbl or the A-series smartphone which are not available in Emzansi.

Posted by zani_003
Dats da 7700

Posted by brix25
@brad: The 7700 was never released instead Nokia released the 7710 which is, according to amawanqa, available on MTN...it should be in the region of R5000. Note that it only has stylus input and you have to 2 hold the phone on it's side a la Ngage 2 make or recieve calls.

Posted by JK
Its gotta be between da v6 or k7

Go for the K700 they under R1300 atm!!

Posted by zani_003
under R1300 ?? where ? and what does atm stand for ?

Posted by celltech

Posted by zani_003
lol thanx for da info ! but where can i get it ?

Posted by Kryptik
Under R1300? Hell yeah, i'd love to know where as well...

Posted by amawanqa
Right, the 7710 in SA Investigation continues.I went to an MTN shop (Mobile Solutions) at Beacon Bay's Retail Park in EL.Alas, none on display or in stock.Apparently they are only expecting delivery in 2 weeks time, after the sales consultant phoned the regional MTN HQ.So then,I phone Roland, the guy with the 7710.He claims that he got it through Nashua, and according to him,he managed to push for one of the very few initial 7710's allocated to Nashua,as their cellphone account, which they use extensively for their business, averages a staggering R2000 a month...ouch. If true,no wonder he got preferential treatment and the phone for free!
He also suggested I check out AVG (Audio Video Gallery) in Devereaux Avenue,Vincent,EL.
We shall see tomorrow...

Posted by Kryptik
Nice going, Amawanqa, i started making similar tentative enquiries down here. Initially the girl at my closest Nashua had the usual vacant look when i asked her... Luckily the manager was helpful, made a call and also mentioned the 77's availability within the next fortnight

Posted by brix25
@Kryptik: Are you seriously considering the 7710? Don't get me wrong it's a nice looking piece of equipment but it's not practical as a phone due to it's bad ergonomics. As as smartphone it can't match the P910 for all-round performance.

May I say the SE's screen is much better and it's got way better ergonomics even if some complained about the presence of the qwerty keyboard intially.

It's nice to be a pioneer and not follow the flock of sheep that is the general cellphone buyer but it's also good to have a phone that won't have you throwing your arms up in frustration.

Decisions, decisions.

Posted by Kryptik
@Brix, not even if they paid me would i use it, its truly a Brick! I merely enquired out of curiosity, as i had popped in to check on their stock. (why is it the more i look over the K700i the more i'm impressed?) i've a niggling feeling it's going to be an SE as a replacement...

Posted by amawanqa
Yeah, gotta agree regarding the P910 having much better ergonomics, for reasons I have already mentioned.
The 7710's more portly dimensions also discourages me from contemplating any personal upgrade to the 7710 or even contemplating switching allegiance to The Dark Side...
When usually carrying keys, wallet etc.,the last thing I want is an even more cumbersome handset taking up even more additional space.Oh,and when I dare to wear shorts,I don't fancy suffering any further from the 'pendulum effect' when walking, caused by a heavier, bulkier handset of course...

Posted by Kryptik
Amawanqa, you're a Sou Effrikan male, the pendulum effect is bred into us :o) But yeah, i agree wth you... I made a similar comment on Sat eve whilst inspecting my friend's iMate. It could be mistaken for a Glock17 when worn on the hip hehehe
