Aluminium feels better than plastic, build quality is good especially for those amongst us who are clumsy, it's got 3G...need I say more.

Thats 2 (I said apart from 3g). I prefer plastic, never ever had a problem with it.

I should take it cos of build quality??? nah.. Me like the features better on K750.

+ look for the thread bout the candy bar phone(k600) I made up my mind back then already that its not for me.

I understand that you had it and played with it b4 ne 1 else and that might have been your reason to prefer it.

All I can say is different strokes for different folks.

Lets face it, the better the phones are now, the better they will be for our next upgrade. They'll probably standardize onboard memory to keep costs low, and put memory card slots in all phones. 3g will become standard with cam phones (not on all though as cam phones are illegal in certain countries).
We'll shop with our phones instead of money, connect to our bank using gprs, bluetooth authorization to the till and go home.
The possibilities are endless, but eventually most things will become as standard as a colour screen.
But the better the competitions phones are, the better your fave companies next phone will be. Either way you win.

@ Kryptik,
Some time ago, using my old username,I discussed at some length the diadvantages regarding the 6630,when Mario was asking about it back then. As brix mentioned, people were put off with the absence of any video calling camera on a 3G handset, although one could use the 6630's docking port, which has a dedicated video camera integrated into it,but who's going to want to be limited to only doing video calling when the phone is only attached to the stationary docking port?

Another point I did make back then, which was not mentioned in brix's reply, was the unnerving number of complaints by 6630 users, both on esato and numerous other sites, regarding the phone's dodgy and unreliable f/ware and/or software. Having said all this, they can now be obtained very cheaply at independent dealers and markets in the UK. The usual independent dealer that I deal with, who sells them unlocked and PAYG, sells them for a mere 150 quid. With so many options out there and the 6680 stealing much of the limelight at the mo,they really only sell these in significant numbers by making the price so attactive....you pays yer money etc.

If you are not too fussed with 3G,then maybe it might be worth waiting for the k750i or D600. Wouldn't you be a bit miffed if you got a D500 now and a month or so later, the D600 makes its appearance on the SA scene, with all its better features? (check out http://www.gsmarena.com for specs.)
As regards the p-series, well I have only praise for them. If you can live with the bulky dimensions and non-megapixel camera, they still pull out more rabbits out of the hat than most phones. Then again, they ain't cheap, and the much-rumoured new P series, supposedly having all the extras like wi-fi,3G etc. will certainly cost a premium, initially anyway.

Obviously, the info above is a mixture of facts and my own experiences of these phones, but I hope it still assists you with narrowing your choices down.

Maybe you got 3 other reasons?

Posted by mario2002
Someone sad the 6630 has 'problems' . I read nokia forums up and down the net and I never come upon a major 6630 problem. Yes it sometimes 'crashes' just like a pc when incompatible/untested software is used together (just like windows) simply because there are 1000's of programs out there which obviously can never be tested together ! The only (major) problem I could found with any cellphone out there,is the O2 branded k750i.(look on esato forum) o2 have stopped shipping the cells because of this and 'se' took a dive in the 2-quarter (profits dropped well below 100million dollar ! ) No company can afford to bring out a buggy cell thous days.

Posted by Rhino8
Anybody heard bout the new siemens 3gig hard drive phone being launched to the end of the year?

Posted by amawanqa
@ mario,
Beside esato forums, what others have you read? I can try trace my pc's history to find the forums on 6630 probs that I perused when I'm back in the UK.Have you also tried Mobileburn?
Secondly, and this is only what I am told,Carphonewarehouse staff at London's Gallions Reach and East Ham,as well as The Link in Barking,Essex, all told me that they had many customers returning 6630's due to f/w glitches. Now, if you want,I can try get more specific info when I'm back there, albeit not much interest to me. It is perhaps not fair for me to personally comment on the phone, as I have not owned one and if you deem it that they are OK,then that's fine. However, with 3 different shops telling me similar stories earlier this year, there seems to be enough 'smoke' to warn of possible 'fire'...
Having said that, perhaps f/w updates have sorted these probs out since I enquired much earlier this year.
Lastly,I can think of more SE handsets that had bugs upon their release, other than the K750,that caused them to be taken off the shelves by O2 etc. The K700 comes to mind; anyone who regularly watches Watchdog in the UK could tell you this,or check the esato search for initial K700 probs.

Posted by mario2002
Yeah buddy, I do read mobile burn too and off course most of the usenet groups, but only howard, prodigits and se, I found worthy enough to register with.unfortunately SE is 'a bit' biased but still enough open minded members frequent it :-) now the problems the k700 had where less then the ones with the 750i ! On the o2 quite a significant number of cells failed without any user fault.I do have nokia shares (not many unfortunately - bought in march this year) I found it worthy to read this forums to help me decide when to buy/sell.Any noteworthy fault with any nokia cell should have stuck in my mind, but mind you ,I am getting old now :-)

Posted by Kryptik
Thanx for the input, guys. It's certainly clarified my thinking, for which i'm grateful. I'm opting to play the waiting game for now... @Amawanqa, i've also read some disturbing reports re-6630... I'm currently reading up on whatever i can on the 6680

Mr mario

Its the o2 branding software that was causing problems... read the K750 users thread.

Posted by brix25
Yep, guess who ain't a fan of network branding? When I buy a phone I'm not expecting it to work flawlessly...afterall it's got more computing power than an ancient Commodore computer.

Posted by Kryptik
I fondly remember those Commodores... That whirring tape-drive... Those bulky joysticks... And yep, it does seem that branding has led to some nasty probz. Wonder how long before our Vodaphone mobiles start giving BER problems...

Posted by brix25
Anyone know the settings for Voda's mail server? I've given up on Gmail's POP3.

Posted by amawanqa
Greetings from Jeffreys Bay,Mario.Busy pigging out at the Tampa Bay Spur at the mo.Good Voda signal by the beachfront here...
Pushing thru 2 EL later.

Ha ha ... yeah I'm laughing because this is so amazing ... I just put a BBC podcast on my Sony Ericsson W800i Walkman cellphone. Now I can listen to the latest recording of my favourite tech show on my cellphone. This folks is the future of broadcasting. Simply - mobile! (Pics were taken with my K750i)

What's the battery life like on the W800? Considering that you'll only use it as a phone only 25% of the time.

At the moment it's pretty much a day but then it's still gaining charge as it's a new battery. With my K750 not playing any music I got more than three days of usage so I expect the same behaviour from my W once the battery has gained a full charge - takes about a week or so to get to this point.

Posted by Kryptik
Amawanqa, careful on the road tonight, nasty accident just outside Humansdorp according to radio bulletin... @ Wireless, you're making me green with envy! I've gotta rely on my SW radio to get the BBC, VOA, etc...

Dude podcasts are there for anyone to enjoy. If you have the latest iTunes then just click on the link. I've not explored the medium at great lengths but I'm a big fan of the BBC and specifically Go Digital who honoured me on the SA trip by having me co-host their show. Now that they have podcasting as well I'm over the moon - just another reason to add to the already growing list of reasons why I'm loving the W800i. If you had an Apple you could listen live to all the BBC radio shows straight off the Dashboard. All the shows and even TV News headlines are available via WMP and RealPlayer from the BBC website. It's great stuff and BBC is the best news caster on the planet.

Yep...as a journalist I find the Beeb"s radio programming to be the best in the world.

Seems like I'll either have to jump on the bandwagon- get myself an iPod- or wait for something better on the horizon...Christmas is coming and many things are starting to lay claim to that 13th cheque.

Posted by Kryptik
ATM i'm technologically challenged... My wap/web/in-fact-any-net-access is limited to my trusty 3510i while a replacement is sought for my now-defunct 6600... (hint to my wife should she browse this thread-> iPod, love... September is bonus month...)

Posted by brix25
I think I'll hold out till March next year to replace my precious...My head should be cleared up by then.

Posted by amawanqa
@ Kryptik,
Tks 4 that, but they must've cleared it by the time we drove past,as there was squat happening near the Humansdorp turn-off when we eventually drove past. However,Algorax/Carbon Black did get us with its evil aroma permeating the air, made worse by us having to drive by slowly with all the roadworks! Finally reached East London, after leaving CT this morning.
Wanna check out a few independent cellphone shops tomorrow that I used to frequent & see what progress has been made over two years...

Posted by Kryptik
Glad u made it there safely. Thank heavens that aroma wafts away from me ;o) I think i saw some nice goodies @ a cellshop in/near to Vincent Park when i was there in April... Don't hold your breath though...

Posted by brix25
This morning I'm heading over to the Vodashop in Somerset Road to see if they can upgrade the firmware.

Went over to Vodashop and they told the reason for my phone's funny behaviour of late is water damage...would cost me R280 to fix.

Posted by Kryptik
With all due respect to VodaShop, why is it that "water damage" is their response to anything they can't easily solve? I can just picture the Voda repair dude at an accident scene, being asked why he caused a collision answering "Water damage..."

Posted by Rhino8
Yea. Voda almost always use the waterdamage excuse when they got to fix a phone under warrenty.

Posted by brix25
The way the sales rep explained it to me it seems like the phone would've been damaged whether I'd used a pouch or not. Plus I'm extra careful with phones, I don't use my phone outside while it's bucketing down. The indicator showed that it was charging even though it wasn't plugged into the charger.

Posted by Kryptik
My point exactly, Brix. It's another thing if we're deliberately careless with our phones, but those dudes always make it sound like we go swimming with our phones... btw, any1 seen that commercial, German i think, of the little girl washing her mom's laptop in the kitchen sink? Hilarious!

Posted by brix25
Yep, it's crazy but someone's got to make money. Other than my issue with the battery indicator the phone's in good nick.

Posted by Kryptik
Brix, i remember that some Nokias have that quirk as well, in that should they be charging and the jack is suddenly removed the charging indicator carries on blithely unaware that it has no source of power supplying it with happy juice... Maybe something similar with your phone?

Posted by brix25
Weighing up everything I decided against paying the money for the "repairs"... Went over to the Vodashop at Cavendish checking out a EGB-10 Gameboard...the R499 price tag put me off.

Posted by Rob123
Hi all (it's been a while....)

I hear that the local networks have finished doing their testing on the K750i. The SE shop at Vodaworld expects to get stock around the 20-22 August. Any ideas when the SP's will start selling these phones??
Any ideas how long it will take before they are available as a 'free' upgrade?

Posted by Kryptik
Hiya Rob. I popped into a Vodashop this afternoon, enquired from the sales assistant the availability of the 750i, was met by a stony blank-eyed stare... "Watse ding is dit daai??" was the eventual response... Needless to say, i didn't tarry long...

Posted by brix25
All this hype about the K750 on Esato is too much... I thought the phone would've been here by now but no, it's been two months since it's European release and some SE fans are losing patience and grabbing any Blokia offered to them.

Posted by Kryptik
@Brix, i lovingly ran my hands over a P910i today... Verrry tempting...

Posted by brix25
Lol@Kryptik and his hunt for a replacement phone. Have you ever tried something like eBay? There's a lot of bargains on there.

Posted by Kryptik
:o) @ Brix! Yep, have browsed thru ebay, but still need to get something that's covered against breakages, etc... Once bitten, etc.

Posted by mario2002
Still using your 3510i ?

Posted by Kryptik
@Mario Yep, mostly using the Ark, occasionally use a borrowed Samsung, or Nokia 6670... The proper phone on the proper contract has to come along sooner or later

Posted by WirelessMonkey
I've been following your discussions about water damage - did you know that most "water" damage is actually caused by sweat? Yep that's right... sweaty dripping smelly sweat that thing we all do and don't even think about it. One drop can affect as many as 14 different electronic components in a single cellphone. This was shown to myself and other media a few years back by eXactmobile's repair centre in Fourways. So next time the heat's turned up... remember this when the phone rings.

Posted by brix25
@Wirelessmonkey: In a roundabout way the chap behind the counter at Vodashop told me my see-through pouch could've contributed to the water damage by retaining moisture. At night I'm taking the phone from it's pouch as a precaution.

Posted by Kryptik
@Wireless, 14?? Damn!! I knew that perspiration contributed to the gradual deterioration of a phone, but had no inkling such a large number of components would be affected!

Posted by mario2002
Who knows, does the N91 got a autofocus cam ? Not that is important but it will be nice to have one :-)
