Would you believe it?? The cellshop where i bought my 6600 flashed it, managed to install 5.53 but for some reason it won't run. 5.27 being re-installed a.t.m. Any ideas why it won't run?

How on earth can I insert a web link in a txt file so that if I open the file with a browser it shows the content and not the link address itself ?In a web editor is easy but in a txt file the '<' is becoming '<' and the link does't work anymore :-(

Posted by Kryptik
Mario, if i'm not mistaken i saw a post concerning your query at Pro, s60 forum, some while ago... Maybe run a search there?

Hey ppl. Still lovin my mobi. Cant wait to get my branded 6680 end of december.

Anybody know any sites where i can test streaming on voda?

And anybody i need help, if i connect with pc via v800 to web i cant do anything. According to my data counter it sends data but does not recieve.

Posted by brix25
@Rhino: What's the deal with waiting until Dec for a branded 6680? You could get the phone now on MTN...sans branding on the body.

Posted by Kryptik
Amawanqa, have a safe and blessed journey to mZantsi, bro... Brix, I'm also giving the 6680 from mtn some serious consideration...

Posted by brix25
Hey Kryptik, thanks for the S60 struff...will put it on CD and share it amongst the homies in the ghetto...LOL.

BTW discovered http://www.cacell.co.za/ which sells sim free phones independent of the networks...

I've seen a couple of bargains on their but also a couple of rip-offs like the Siemens SL65(brand new) which I almost bought yesterday for R1699 at Cash Crusaders...CACell are offering the same phone for R2550.

It's my pleasure, bro. Any ideas who's got the best deals on top-up contracts atm? I'm looking out for a good replacement for the 6600, but not confining my search to Nokia only

Posted by amawanqa
@ Kryptik,
Tks for your thoughtfulness.Am about to commence The Great Pack.Got good mate in Jozi, who I will meet up with prior to the connecting flight to CT, to get me two Vodacom 4u PAYG packs, without having to resort to the airport's Vodacom (Vodaworld?)shop prices.
The in-laws are going fishing (bleeuurrgh!Give me strength...) at the mouth of the Swartkops River (they are visiting friends in 'Dustpatch').BTW, do you ever get the none-too-pleasant wafts from Carbon Black/Algorax where you teach?

PE always seems to have a somewhat iffy greeting if you enter the city from the EL side:
1.First the Swartkops and Motherwell industrial areas greet you, (and of course,Carbon Black leading the charge...)
2.The delightful PE prison is next with the just as delightful graveyard,
3.Then a nearly km long railway workshops and more industries, before the motorways steer one away from further industrial area like Korsten...
Oh, and a rule of thumb that I learnt the hard way since I studied in PE in the early 90's and beyond: stay clear of PE traffic cops...they seem to have the WORST traffic cops out of all the cities I have ever been to. (Just my personal experiences, of course, as well as the findings of several other connections of mine...)
Don't get me wrong, I still like most of PE..a lot of good memories of days 'sewing wild oats',meeting nice babes while part-time working at Greenacres, etc...
Am visiting a few long-time friends in Walmer and Brickmaker's Kloof there later next month.

Anyway, better get back to the cellphone stuff.
Philips, who have made some less-than-desirable handsets in the past and not the most enviable reputation for reliability or longevity, seem to at last be making a more concerted effort to woo the more spec-hungry consumers amongst us, with their latest offering, announced this month. It also demonstrates how the slide-form factor of an increasing number of cellphones are catching on with more and more manufacturers:
Philips 960: 2mp,BT,MP3/AAC,50MB shared memory plus sd slot, etc., all in a miniscule 88mmx48mmx23mm package. All that's missing is a radio (wow...) and rather more disappointing, no Symbian platform. Still, a MUCH better effort on your report card for Q3 2005,Philips....

@ Brix

Am waiting till end december coz it will be much cheaper by then. AND BRANDED. Voda branding is much better than i expected.

amawanqa: Enjoyed reading you're post on PE's smog...Durban is no better...coming from Cape Town one's used to the South Easter blowing the muck away. BTW Phillips cellphones have not been available locally for yonks. I think the last one I saw here was the 9@9.

Posted by amawanqa
@ brix,
Yeah, the last Philips I saw in SA was the cumbersome and uninspiring Savvy,a good few years back.
Having said that, you hardly see them in the UK either. In fact, the only UK network that has a Philips in its inventory at the moment is Virgin, with the 755. A strange handset,in that it comes equipped with a stylus to personalise pics and make basic notes on its average-sized screen.Nothing exceptional or ground-breaking;very much a 'fun phone',probably most suitable for those with an insatiable appetite for doodling or perhaps for those who have become bored with flicking snollies in double maths lessons.

You can the Samsung D500 for only R299 cash on a Family top up contract from GAME.Price is valid until 24 July or while stock lasts

Posted by brix25
Why do we have contracts bundled with "free" phones? Why can't I sign a service contract with a network, hopefully have cheaper call rates without having to subsidise a phone that would've lost it's appeal after the 1st year of the contract ...That's all people want and the reason Icasa are taking the networks to task. Heard on the news that Cell C are hiking their rates.

Posted by Kryptik
Thanx Tahir, am giving it some hasty consideration, since tomorrow's 24th. Amawanqa, will the Airport strike not affect your flights? As for Cell C.... Bloody numpties!

Posted by amawanqa
@ Kryptik,
Thanks for letting me know. I quickly made a few phone calls to SA after reading your post. From what I hear back home, some international flights had to be cancelled due to the ground crew strikes, but thankfully most flights seem to still be OK. Well I hope this doesn't deteriorate any further tomorrow...not much I can do about it, I guess.
Speaking of phoning home, your friend in the UK might know of this, but if he dials Call-Thru SA on 08444 844000 from a UK landline,it only costs 3p a minute to phone any SA landline. There is no hidden charges or connection fee crap, just a 3p flat rate. It appears on the landline bill, fully itemised.
So,with this in mind, doesn't it mean that it is cheaper to phone SA from the UK using this access number than to phone another landline within SA using Telkom...?Food for thought...
To call an SA cell number, a different Call-Thru SA access number needs to be used: 0911 500 4000, at 15p flat rate.
When more people start using VOIP both here and back home,I would be very keen to see if landline companies decide to 'adjust' their prices,in favour of the consumer...

Posted by Kryptik
@Amawanqa, thanx for that info, am definitely forwarding it to my mates there. That's bloody cheap!!! Regarding ACSA ground crew situation, radio reported earlier that the situation seems to have stabilised for now, so it hopefully won't thwart your arrangements.

MTN launches gprs data bundles on prepaid.

Anybody know about it?

2rumours going around at moment. . .
1 R10 for 10 meg

And

2 R10 per month.

Posted by brix25
Saw them advertising their new sms bundles...quite cheap for those of us who text a lot. Why can't networks charge a flat fee for unlimited wap-only browsing? Now that would be revolutionary.

Posted by Rhino8
Whats the sms bundle like. Whats the cost and whats the catch.

Am really bored with wap today. Want good sites.

Posted by Kryptik
They wouldn't.dare do that since it would impact on their profitability... Would be a godsend if they did though.

Busy surfing the net at London City Airport in east London's Docklands area, while waiting for the boarding gate to open. Then it's off to Frankfurt and Lufthansa to Jozi.
As one can imagine, there is a strong armed police presence here, all carrying the 9mm Heckler & Koch machine guns that the Special Air Service (SAS)made so famous.Sniffer dogs filtering between luggage and people etc.
Another unusual handset I spotted on www.gsmarena.com is the LG m3440, with its sleek Porsche 911-influenced lines. How's this for a feature:sod any megapixel camera, it has an integrated....breath analyser/ sobriety tester! Can you imagine what it will look like blowing into the phone's sensor at parties before driving home...people will truly believe you've had too much to drink ...?LOL!!
Anway, time to go. SA here we come.

Safe travelling mate.

Just activated my first 10 meg bundle, by calling 555 and press 3 and 3 again. R10 for 10 meg.

Posted by Kryptik
Happy landings, bro. Get here in one piece... Those H&K's, they wouldn't be USP 45's maybe? Sometimes issued as anti-terrorist equipment.... Heavy-duty stuff, one round from those babies hits you in the pinky and you go down... @Rhino, thanx for the feedback re- wap bundles

Posted by Rhino8
MTN Gprs are now virtually free against what it used to be.

Posted by Kryptik
Just loaded my first R10 bundle...

Posted by brix25
How many of you guys are on MTN? My primary account is with Voda although I keep my MTN sim handy just in case.

On that question, the few people on here using 3G how many of you guys are using the new 64K simcard?

Apparently the slow speeds(8kbps max) I attained using the K600 was due to the fact that I was using a 32K sim.

Posted by Rhino8
My main account is on voda, use MTN alot. And am just getting gr8 3G speeds with my 32k. On both gprs, up to 90kbs on MTN and 40 on voda.

Posted by Kryptik
I keep Voda as my day-to-day number in my 6600, MTN in my 3510i. 6600 has had it, beyond economical repair says Nokia. The search for a replacement now steps up a notch since i'm experiencing withdrawal symptoms of the worst kind. Thank heavens i refuse to part wth this ancient 35!

Posted by brix25
@Kryptik: How long have you had the 6600 if Nokia deems it beyond repair? If you got it on Vodacom what happened to the two-year warranty?

Posted by Kryptik
I bought it from a cellshop, bro. It transpires it's 'grey' i.e. brought in from the U.A.E., and somehow the Nokia technicians couldn't get to grips with it. It's 12month store warranty also expired... Seems a contract phone is the way to go, get a decent warranty, etc with it

Posted by brix25
Yes...amidst all the bitching and moaning there's one advantage to getting your phone through a network.

Posted by Kryptik
True indeed.... Anyone have any ideas what's the best deal on 6630 or 6680 currently available?

Posted by Rhino8
6680 on voda is on a business contract at 175 a moth i think. MTN you have to pay 1200 i think on a procall 120. Not sure bout the subs tho

Posted by Tahir Ally
The Nokia 6680 is Free on MTN mycall 100 @R157pm from Italk Cellular.@BRIX if a phone is BER(Beyond Economical Repair) due to customer abuse or acts of god .The phone will not be covered under any warranty

Posted by Kryptik
Many thanx, Tahir, that's a sweet deal. I'm not sure if they have a contact here in PE tho. Anybody perhaps have a contact number for them? That deal sounds sweet...

Posted by brix25
Just got an IM via Yamigo from the Wireless Monkey informing me that he's taken possession of a W800...only snag is the software for loading music onto the phone seems to be only compatible with the OS from the Evil Empire(Microsoft) which is hard to swallow for an Apple enthusiast.

Posted by Kryptik
Pity about that, although one would assume that a means to circumvent that obstacle would be found, given time... Speaking of Evil Empires, hope that ICASA pounds some sense into Vodacom and MTN.

Posted by brix25
Mac users will have to wait a wee while for compatible software but it ill come. With all the snags I still think the W-series are better phones/music players than the range of iTunes phones which have recently surfaced on the net.

Posted by Tahir Ally
Talking about evil........Cell C recently INCREASED there rates and the other networks are going to follow.

Posted by Kryptik
Can't help but wonder whether we'll ever see any real competitiveness in the local cellular arena... I'm hoping it's in our lifetime, but i'm not holding my breath...

Posted by JK
ICASA is gonna make it worse for consumers looking for high end phones!!!

your call rates and monthly subs will decrease yes, BUT you gonna be paying around R1300 - R2000 for a decent phone!!! + WITH ICASA probe they want to ban SP's support system, which will make it worse...

i wonder how consumers looking for 9500s and i-mates gonna react???

ps bundled free minutes could also disapear/decrease!!

but we shall see....

According to The Herald this morning, Vodacom gained 1.72million customers from April to June, bringing their total to 14.5 million subscribers. Not shabby... Mtn announcing their figures tomorrow...
