Don't know of any local co's with wapsites. My own company(Independent Online) that used to have a wapsite in the days of CSD has now made it's content exclusively available to Vodafone Live subscribers. Spoke to businessman while in Jozi and he told WASP's were barely making a profit on their services.

Posted by mario2002
@Kryptik Hey buddy, what version of Agile are you using ?

Posted by Kryptik
Tried Google in a search for SA companies on wap. Ha comma ha sums up the results. Mario, you mean which version i HAD. My 6600 in for upgrade/repairs, major re-install envisaged. Did you guys know 5.27.0 is the fw we have, whilst 5.53.0 is availale in other countries. Sad but true.

Posted by brix25
My K700 has also started acting up...dunno if I should pay the R80 for an upgrade or leave things until I get my new phone in March(inshallah)

Does any1 know from where i can test out EDGE speeds

Posted by Kryptik
Brix, any luck on getting a booking back to iKapa? I had a long hard look at some SE models when i took my Nokia in for repairs today... Not shabby at all, Nige.

@Kryptik: This afternoon I braved the urban jungle that is the Jozi inner city went over to Park Station hoping that someone would've cancelled their booking but it was all in vain so I had to hop on a taxi to the Mother City...to think the other day I flew into Jozi like a pimp, now I'm roughing out in the back of a taxi.

Posted by Kryptik
Damn.... Good luck, bro, will say prayer for your safe arrival.

Posted by brix25
Yeah man, pray for this soul... there was no other option and I didn't want to stay a day longer in Joburg.

Posted by Kryptik
Safe travelling, bro. I'm calling it a night, mtn's gprs signal is non-existent, Voda is incredibly sluggish, my 6600 with my ebooks is in for repairs, so my options have shrunk dramatically...

Posted by brix25
It's 3.35am and I'm still awake...not arrived in Cape Town yet, currently in Laingsburg. My gf is waiting for me which explains the urgency to get home. Checked my K700 and MTN has got EDGE all over the platteland.

Posted by gilani
Thanks celltech, quite funny that my old 3200 has edge and my k700 dont. My sis just got a 6230i -nice cam but not a killer

Posted by JK
does a 3200 have edge??? cool is it wap 2???

Posted by brix25
I don't think the 3200 has EDGE, don't know the exact model name but it's the one with the flashing lights(3220?) on the side that boasts EDGE- just goes to show my knowledge of my Nokia model numbers(way too confusing) and we don't even have the 3230 (Symbian OS) available locally.

Posted by JK
Yip maybe the 3220, nice kids phone!! voda does have the 3230 for a month now i think... free on weekender, maybe cheaper now.

Posted by Kryptik
Damn, Repair Centre says they've flashed my 6600, re-installed fw, checked hw thoroughly, no probz. But when trying to run most apps phone gives same error msg as b4, thus the virus has entrenched itself... Now they're about to try some beta version of the newest flash version available and trying that...

Posted by brix25
@Kryptik: You're in denial mate, the 6600 has served it's purpose- good phone that it is- and me thinks it needs to be retired into the capable hands of staff at your nearest Cash Crusaders.

Posted by Kryptik
When my pc really packed it in i took it to the military range, left it at the 100m mark and blew the smithereens outa it. Maar jy ken vir hottie, karring tot dit werk, so not quite giving up yet... Altho worst case scenario is a visit to the insurance folk for a replacement phone.

Posted by gilani
There quite a few old nokias wit edge including 3200, 3220, 6220 and others, sum of these fones were released early last year. I read about the 3200 having edge in a 'mtn 3g and edge' broture. having edge on my 3200 isnt that nice(max downloads=64 kb) and the fone only has 1mb

Posted by brix25
EDGE was included in Nokia handsets 18 months ago bcoz many European networks were not sure when their 3G networks would come online. This after they had spent vast sums getting their licences. Some on here have claimed EDGE is obsolete in light of 3G...they should tell that to folks in rural areas who want a better connection than dial-up. It still makes perfect sense...GPRS > EDGE >3G.

Posted by brix25
I thought I should include some pics taken with the K600i.

This picture was taken on Wednesday morning at the Durban International Airport...kinda like it.

Here are some fisher folk at one of the piers on South Beach hanging a line...waiting for the big one.

All that time spent for some small fishies.

After a hard day of toiling on the beach and looking at beautiful babes while my girl is in a cold Cape Town nothing beats being tossed around.

A famous landmark in Durban's West Street...one American tourist on a surfing safari asked me: "What does Yebo Gogo mean?" and I had to school him about the whole cellular explosion in South Africa and the significance this ad had on people getting cellphones...truelly one of SA's favourite ad campaigns.

Posted by mario2002
Kryptik what typ nokia are you using now ? No kidding,EDGE is king here on the farm close to Tsitsikama.I cant even imagine to access the net over gprs on my laptop. My old 7650 has all I need but EDGE.Is nice to have someone with a 6230 :-)

Posted by Kryptik
I'm using my ever-faithful 3510i to get online. It was my first wap-enabled phone, and its sentimental value is immense. Regarding Tsitsikamma, what a beautiful piece of God's creation! It's breathlessly awesome in its splendour.

Ich ben teruchtg.

Posted by brix25
@slssls: I take it you're back for school that starts tomorrow.

Posted by sIssIs
Yup,
hey MTC in Nam is actually cool, after every call they give you the amount of airtime you've got left so you don't have to check all the time.(I know UK networks does it, or when I was there)

Oh... and have you people seen on MTN's coverage map that they have spent lots of their money putting up EDGE in less populated regions... strange.

Has anything happened in the telecoms when I was gone?

Yep, you're right...MTN has got widespread EDGE coverage in rural areas...don't know whether they're planning on ever putting up 3G networks there.

Hi pals, check this link out http://10.211.28.30/3G/3G.html its live video streaming of DSTV SS2 and traffic cams, possible only with EDGE or 3G handset.

Posted by brix25
@celltech: When I posted that link a couple of weeks ago I was shitted on by a friend who shall remain anonymous...if too many people log onto the site it might crash. Also normal Vodacom GPRS doesn't support streaming media so it's a bit useless for us folk still using GPRS.

Posted by mario2002
;-) Well that is time for a new EDGE/3G capable handset

Posted by Kryptik
@slssls Der Gedanke an Schule erschreckt mich Morgen... Ich habe solch einen friendlichen Urlaub gehabt jetzt ist das zurück zur Verwirrung.... The thought makes me shudder... Brix, why you gotta mention school? Moenie vloek nie! At my school we've gotta lose a colleague tomorr due to redeployment...

Posted by brix25
@mario: 6680;-)

Posted by Kryptik
I've gotta fetch my phone on Tuesday... Don't tempt me by mentioning 6680... I may just buy one... Or should i be looking at an SE? ;o)

I'm not sure this person who shitted you out created this link or not, because surely people are needed to test these links out, and I dont think a lot of people will log onto this link because of the costs involved.

Standby SA... dat Walkman W800i Sony Ericsson is coming to town. Here's a little something I picked up from the Sandisk boys... the K750i and the W800i support 4GB Memory Stick DUO PRO cards.

Posted by Kryptik
@ Brix, i was wondering why that link was censored... Didn't make much sense then, still doesn't. I tend to agree with Celltech, what's the point of the link shame people need to test it out...

Posted by brix25
@Kryptik: It's currently only being used to test the service by a small number of people. BTW Vodacom users can't access.

@WM cant wait for the W800 and K750 to hit our stores.

There may be a downside when it does finally hit the stores - proud new owners could find that there phones are LOCKED and only able to play music bought from the networks. Be prepared to challenge the networks in a court of law... FOR REAL! My tenure is almost up and then I'll be more clear on Esato with respect to my personal opinion on DRM and networks "owning" the right to decide what can be stored, played and shared with a cellphone.

Posted by Kryptik
Monkey, it's going to be a battle royal, but one that needs to be fought. Their absolute sway over DRM and what may be sent/shared really needs to be challenged.

Posted by brix25
@The Wireless Monkey and Kryptik: Where is Tahir when one needs to debate these issues?

I still don't think local networks have the resources to set up some sort of online music store unless they work with a foreign player(eg. Vodacum/Vodafone)...Having played with the V800 there aren't as many issues with DRM as I had feared. MP3's are easily downloaded, only snag is you can't use them as ringtones.

I also heard that SE won't allow the W800 to be branded which is good and bad...maybe they're working on a deal with networks to sell music via Sony's Connect site which currently in a war with Apple's iTunes and the legalized Napster.

Posted by Kryptik
My biggest bone of convention has been the inability to send tones other than .amr as part of an mms from my 6600, whilst i receive every format imaginable from friends via mms. I agree that this issue needs some knowledgeable debate...

Just returned to the queen's claustaphobic capital, after spending an awesome weekend on a larny riverboat around Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. On the way there, the quaint,forest-filled passes like the A143 and parts of the A12 reminded me so much of the road to CT's Tygervalley or sections of the Tsitsikamma before Storms River.

This time next week I'll be able to see first-hand how much the face of Tableview has changed since 2 years ago, when I saw mass property developments underway, very clearly aimed at the far more affluent members of the community, from SA and abroad...
It is going to be good to be with old friends for a month or so before duty calls me back to the original east London.

Back to the phone stuff. An independent cellphone shop in the local area managed to get a load of unlocked (from Orange) Sagem myX6-2 handsets.1.3mp camera,Bluetooth,sd slot, mp3 player,262k screen, exchangable covers, etc. Fairly standard features on an increasing number of cellphones these days, but not bad for Ł75...

If I look at this particular Sagem and the myX-8, one can't but help notice how the company has come along in leaps and bounds over the past 3 years, as regards quality and features. The new Sagems will do well to silence a lot of their biased critics;they do have a bit of an 'el cheapo' stigma attached to them.Personally I think people would be foolish to criticise them without actually trying out either of these 2 relatively new models. What I also found interesting is that these unlocked Orange France handsets have PTT and IM shortcuts on the grid menu, yet Orange UK does not support PTT....why not, France Telecom, owners of Orange?Bloody Frogs...

Posted by brix25
At ÂŁ75 this SE fiend would happily sell his soul to the struggling frog. The only networks offering Sagems in SA are Cell C and MTN...these phones(MyX5 comes to mind) are usually low-budget featureless ugly ducklings.

Amawanqa, just beyond the PetroPort adjacent to the Storms Bridge, an International articulated truck nearly ran me off the road in January. Chap was so busy chatting away on his phone that he failed to observe his speedo reading of 140 in an 80zone. Until a traffic officer kindly pointed it out to him ;o)

@ kryptik,
Where and what do you teach, if you don't mind me asking?
BTW, I also had a relatively close encounter a few k's from that Total(?) petroport by the Storms River Bridge;not with a truck but with an entire troop of baboons making an impromptu crossing.

I think I'm going to settle for another Vodacom PAYG simcard when I land next week, either the 4u or 'passport pack' as apparently both come with a 2 year airtime window, unless I'm mistaken. (You reading this perhaps,Tahir? Are you still with us?)
Got nothing against the other 2 networks, but if I'm going to be travelling in various rural areas as well as major towns and cities, judging by the info in the posts on this forum, it would seem to be my best option, coverage-wise.

I teach English and Science in Swartkops, just outside iBhayi, mfowethu. Or rather, i attempt to teach it... There days convincing youngsters to read ANY books whatsoever takes up more time than actual teaching! And yep, our mammalian budz on that road are particularly bold. (Total? Possibly, yes...)

Posted by mario2002
When are you getting the 6600 back ? Do you have a instant messenger account ? I see you like to post a lot in here (nice) I am pretty sure you will enjoy IM too - especially simplex ptt.Is not as personal as a phone call and easier then tipping and also not to expensive :-)

Posted by Kryptik
d.v. I'm getting it back tomorrow, Mario. One of the first apps i need to re-install would be Agile, as well as Netfront or Opera
