Right now it's charged at normal data rates...quite expensive for 1 minute of viewing.

hi all,

would like to know is there any big mobile forum in SA.

thanks

Posted by JK
Not that I know of...

Posted by Rhino8
What extras you get on that MTN contract? Seems im getting a phone from MTN................ Again

Posted by brix25
What's happened to the 6680 on Voda or have I missed something?

Posted by amawanqa
Man, am I glad I drove home in the opposite direction to Stratford in east London (UK) here tonight..the 2012 Olympic bid celebrations have contributed greatly to a virtual gridlock along Romford Road...

Can't wait till my lily-white tootsies feel SA soil again along Cape Town International's apron in 3 week's time. Big Korn Bites and Black Label have been missed.Went to an actual Spur in a south London shopping centre, but it just ain't the same..their Surf n' Turf was miserable!

Anyway, enough ramblings. The Link (www.thelink.com), one of the big cellphone chainstores here, and Orange have got quite a bril PAYG offer on at the mo:
k700i and SE hbh-602 Bluetooth headset for a whole £99!! (Or £89 if you trade in your old brick.)Not too shabby, hey Nige?

Posted by brix25
@amawanqa: Why does ur nick have me cracking up? Ok, guess I'm a perv. Dunno why but I'm glad neither the frogs or the Yanks got the Olympics. Tonight, I'm a bit frustrated...got a a really old T39m but discovered some bugs with in the fw. The phone is in a reasonable condition (lots of scratches) for something from the turn of the century. My first priority though is trying 2 see whether Vodacare still support this phone, didn't have problems when I took my T68i to them last year for an upgrade.

Posted by amawanqa
@ Brix,
LOL, yeah, the username is a direct result of my slightly warped sense of humour. The spelling of it was purely to give an SA flavour and 'hide' the meaning for a split-second or so until English-pronounced phonetics give it away...
Fortunately the username doesn't bug my wife as much as my impromptu, incorrect spelling of 'ithuvi' on my old esato username used to bug me...

I have fond memories of the T39m. Let me know if you ever consider bothering to get a new or after-market housing for it to replace the scratched one; there's always stuff like that available on eBay etc.Not sure if it's a viable option, but the option is at least there.
Hope you come right with the f/w.

Posted by brix25
@amawanqa: Occasionally all men are wankers. Back to my T39m...The housing doesn't bother me too much, there's lots of shops selling them around Cape Town...my primary concern is getting the latest fw and maybe a spare battery.

Hey guys, going to s. africa tomorrow, anyone know if the mtn free wap thing is still available? if not, waht is the cheapest network for gprs, many thanks!

ps reply ASAP

Posted by brix25
@tempsonyfreak: Unfortunately the free GPRS from MTN came to an end last year. All three networks now charge R2/Meg. On which is the best network it kinda depends...if you're going to be travelling around rural areas forget MTN... Voda's got the widespread coverage but if you're in the cities and towns MTN should be good enough.

Posted by Rhino8
Yea. MTN is sure much faster....

Posted by brix25
...and their 3G experience is also slightly better except for a stupid portal. Why do I say this? While playing around with the V800 a week ago getting a reliable signal/connection from Voda almost impossible unless one stood next to a base station. MTN has got fewer 3G cells but at least their signal is reliable.

Posted by Kryptik
Amawanqa, i was trying so hard not to lol when i first saw your nick! My buddy and i have a coupla nicks we use on another site- AlfaQ and FarQ2... As for that offer on the SE, i'm considering having a bud of mine who's heading this way in a coupla weeks to bring one back...

Posted by JK
@thomson

If you in JHB go for mtn... theres way to much traffic on voda!!!

Posted by Rhino8
So ppl.... .... .... What happened to tahir? Seems to have disappeared when MTN launched 3G.

Posted by Kryptik
True... Drove thru the Transkei recently, nearly zero coverage on MTN, excellent Voda tho. BUT... Big but- mtn gprs is really fast in cities, apart from the occasional lapse. Anybody else think it's time we had more service providers? A bit of competition never hurts

Posted by amawanqa
All the cell networks here have been blocked/ shut down, with all the bomb blasts this morning. The signal bar is full, but impossible to dial out at the moment. Had to email friends and family and use the landlines.
A very co-ordinated attack by malicious scum...thank God there weren't more fatalities than what there potentially could have been.

Posted by brix25
Like a fool I've been trying to call there without any success.

Posted by JK
more sp's?? that will only result in more cell c's!!!

minus 1.14% market share for 2004!!!

Posted by amawanqa
@ Kryptik,
I'm sure you know, but just to remind you that the k700i will need to be unlocked, as it is obviously UK PAYG and on the Orange network, with Orange branding.
Easy enough to unlock, though.
What a bargain.

Finally managed to speak to my budz in London... I agree wth Amabhuti, it could have been so much worse. Regardless of who's responsible, they're true wankers who deserve no mercy.

Posted by brix25
@Kryptik...it's amawanqa...LOL. But yeah everyone I spoke to this afternoon were safe...not too many working in central London.

Today I had my first encounter with the very pricey 8800.
This is no review or mini-review as it is based solely on my brief fiddlings with the 8800.
There's no denying that it has a classy 'feel' and the screen sliding mechanism has a very smooth action; a definitive precision-engineered demeanor about it.
IMO, the stainless steel covers have such a polished look that it looks almost like chrome, seemingly too close to excessive 'bling', and almost a la 8810ish in shininess..remember the old 'lipstick phone' of the mid-90's, then superseded by the 8850, 8855 and 8890?
The ringtones were definitely unique to any other Nokia I have played with. No big deal IMO, when we can use mp3's as ringtones on many modern phones.
A few iffy self-portraits with the camera quickly shows up the vga camera's limitations, but in all fairness there was a reasonable amount of clarity in the pics.
A nice phone to show off your financial wellbeing and penchant for bling things over and above tech specs...
but I wouldn't be able to wrestle the demons reminding me what I could have bought for the same amount of money, if I was ever mad(?) enough to purchase one of these...

Posted by brix25
Only a Nokia fan can love something like the 8800. Way too expensive and you can't walk with down the street.

Posted by WirelessMonkey
Anyone given YOU-WHO a try? http://www.age0.com/you-who/

Posted by Kryptik
I did, using my 6600 and my mate's 6670. Kept crashing my mobile, removed it eventually, ultimately did a full-scrub format since it's caused havoc, mobile sluggish, etc... Nice game though once bugs are sorted...

Posted by brix25
I'm currently in Durban at the beachfront and GPRS speed is pitiful.

Posted by mario2002
Does anyone know if the N91 is out ?

Posted by amawanqa
@ Mario,
It's definitely not available in the UK yet, if that's any indicator. Also,on carphonewarehouse's 'coming soon' section, they have now stipulated that it will be available in January 06, whereas the N70 is due out in September.
What I like about the N70 is that it has the forward camera for video calling, unlike the N91, yet both are 3G capable.(Why,Nokia?!)
Sure the N91 has the impressive 4 gig HDD, but with larger expandable memory cards becoming available, maybe the N70 could do the trick...it is also S60 and Symbian, and both are equipped with the 2mp camera.
@ brix, if I recall correctly while perusing the Nigerian thread, it seems that the 6680 might be your next phone? By Feb or hopefully sooner, the N70 should be available in SA...

Posted by brix25
@amawanqa: The idea of a HD in a phone puts this brotherman off...with phones constantly dropping(not that I'm clumsy) I'd be hard pressed to reccommend the N-series even if they come with impressive specs.

Anyday now for the W800...Wireless Monkey should shut up all the naysayers when he's one of the first in the land with this much anticipated model from SE.

BTW, on the subject of naysayers...I notice an absence from this thread the last couple of weeks...I won't mention his name but you all know who I'm referring to...and he disappears just when I was sharing my joy at watching tv on the phone.

@ brix,
Yhu!Kushushu gqciti namhlanje pha phesheya kolwandle..kwakhona..over 32 degrees. Global warning strikes again.(Xolo...my isiXhosa is a bit rusty;not too widely spoken in the northern hemisphere's East London.)Hope you're enjoying eThekwini?

Agree regarding the N91, but the N70 has a conventional MMC slot rather than any form of multi-gig fixed HDD...
http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_n70-1153.php

Yes, it has been eerily quiet on the V-front lately...

Posted by brix25
@amawanqa: pha phesheya? Di laphe ezansi... I think my next destination will certainly be Mozambique. Durban is so different from CT it's scary thinking about it. The CBD resembles Hillbrow...life seems to be perpetually buzzing away. Sad to say it's also filthier then Slaapstad...next time I won't complain about the litter left by traders in Greenmarket Sq.

Posted by amawanqa
@ brix,
Enjoying your travels 'down there',mhlekazi? Yeah, SA's east-side is different. Man, now wouldn't it be funny if you walked into a certain Vodacom shop, sporting a very 'yello' t-shirt...
Hmm..right of admission reserved...?LOL!!

Saw another great special on at the mo, through T-Mobile UK, a Siemens S65 (1.3mp, Bluetooth,sd slot, but no mp3 or radio) and bluetooth headset for £99 on PAYG.
http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/Dispatcher?menuid=orphan_matesrates

I'm no big Siemens fan, although I've owned a basic C55 as a second phone a few years ago,but it is quite a tempting promotion if there are those that can live without mp3's.
Personally,I have become too spoilt with the P900.
Thanks T-Mobile, but not for me.

@brad: Manje eThekwini di ya khuluma. Right now I'm having breakfast at The Workshop in central Durban. Staying el cheapo style at a backpackers in Pine Street. Today I'm hopefully buying a cheap plane ticket to Jozi...should be there for the football on the weekend.

Posted by JK
Iv seen both the W800 and the N range... was too busy to actually play around with them, didnt really care at that moment, not one to fuss bout mobiles.......they prototypes though but still the same...

but yip there are a few people who got them...

also there was a guy with an imate sumting, said to be the ultimate phone also with 3g???

Posted by brix25
786KBR: I suspect that "i-mate something" is the MDA IV which is T-Mobile branded in the markets where they have a presence. Awesome specs list and surely kills all other smartphones.

Posted by zani_003
Hope u enjoyed yo stay here m8,was at da workshop on sat. Shud hav checked out other places lyk da gateway or pavallion b4 ya left SA's or shall i say africa's playground

Posted by brix25
brad: I'm still here...right now at the EastCoast Radio building...just booked my flight to Jozi. Will be leaving here on Wednesday morning.

Posted by Rhino8
Hello ya beautifull ppl. This is my first post on here wit my new phone...... And guess what...... Went with sony again..... Got v 800

Posted by brix25
@Rhino: How are finding the joypad? One thing I can tell you is that the pics won't be much of an improvement over the K700 because the V/Z800 uses a CMOS lense as opposed to a CCD in both the K600 and the S700. Good luck with your purchase and enjoy the V800 a good phone apart from some misgivings.

Posted by Rhino8
Camera Seems lots better than my k700 took the same pic wit both phones and printed them. V much better than k

Posted by brix25
@Rhino: The camera should be better...it's 1.3mp afterall! The point I was trying to make was that not all cameras with 1.3mp's take the same quality pics... I should start posting some pics from the K600 to prove my point problem is I haven't been near a PC with an internet connection.

Posted by zani_003
@ brix---> So ya been at gateway! Hmmm.... Cool... Wot ya up 2 2mrw ? Yo last day on this beautiful piece of da planet da eastcoast of kzn?

Posted by Rhino8
Yea. The cam is good enough for my purpos. Lol. Keypad makes my hand three. Will take some getting used to.

Posted by brix25
@brad: Yep, was at Gateway this afternoon- boring if I may say. Saw a shop selling the PSP for R4000...right royal rip off albeit Sony hasn't yet launched it locally...wonder how many people bought it? I think I'll be heading over to Ushaka Marine World 2morro. Tell me what's up with these big streets down here? And all of them going one way? Being a pedestrian can be a bit tricky with taxis wanting to mow you down each time you try and cross West Street.

Posted by Kryptik
Molweni banumzana. Niphila njani? Any1 heard of the campaign in the UK involving the programming of a contact number for next of kin under an entry called ICE in your mobile? It facilitates the speedy identification of persons by rescue personnel... It certainly has merit...
