Evening guys. It's doing my head in where i read that info a while back re- Sendo being absorbed... Anyway, Vodacom is back but i still keep my old 3510i in my backpocket (wth an MTN sim inserted) for those very moments when Voda goes on the blink. Saw somebody here offering D600 for $350 apiece.

Posted by brix25
@Kryptik: Not sure about Samsung even with all the bells and whistles...maybe I'm just biased against the Koreans. It should be said I've played around with the D500, was impressed but not blown away.

Posted by Kryptik
Brix, when i went to buy my Nokia i was offered a D500 as well. And as you said, wasn't totally blown away. My better half is crazy over her E330 though. Few bells but a beautiful whistle nonetheless. I can't help but compare it's audio clarity to that of my Nokia...

Posted by brix25
What I like about the D500 is the fact that's it's the first Samsung to feature BT and it's audio and video controls beat those found in current SE's, my precious included.

Posted by JK
Blown away by a E330??? Now thats a joke!! :)

some idiot also swap a nokia 6680 for a D500??? WTF!!

Posted by brix25
LOL@786KBR... I'm fascinated by the appeal of the E330 which is ordinary when compared to the K500, ok clamshells might have more appeal but c'mon folks.

Posted by JK
Not to bring the guy down or anything, that phone has nothing!!! its just a cam phone!!!

Love the advert though!!! (the chick in the ad to be more precise)

Posted by Kryptik
;o) @KBR, up till now she's been using a 3310... She's one of those who wants to make and receive calls, txt, but nothing more... Duznt even wana use the browser to go online!!! Different strokes for different folks...

Posted by brix25
@Kryptik: If you're partner just want to text and call she might be interested in the Z520 which should be in stores by Oct/Nov....a good clamshell that'll blow away the competition... I hope:-)

Ok, finally took possession of the K600(beta model). Will soon be posting a review. Thus far it feels better than the V800.

Here's my first post from the K600i...will be posting pictures later.

The much talk of and anticipated Motorola iTunes phone is due very shortly in South Africa. Another model will be launched early 2006 with a scrolly wheel (like the iPod has). Compared with the Sony Ericsson W800i which is shipped with 512MB, the iTunes first version will only be shipped with 128MB (Transflash card). Watch this space for comparisons - when I write about both handsets.

Key Features:
iTunes playback
Video capture and playback
3D Stereo Sound
Bluetooth
Removable Memory slot (128 MB inbox)
Large, active color display (176 x 220, 262K TFT)
Integrated digital Camera (VGA quality) w/ camera light
Enhanced Games w/ Vibration
22 KHz enhanced polyphonic speakers w/ vibration, MP3 and MIDI ringers, and full MP3 music listening with CD Quality Sound
Cool high tech Candy Bar design
Rhythm Lights
PIM functionality with Picture Caller ID
Multi-Media Messaging (MMS)
FOTA

The next version - insider info points to this one being launched early 2006.

MY K750i experience:

There aren't many phones that have over the past eight years impressed me. In fact, there are few. The Ericsson T28 impressed with its tiny, in fact miniscule, size yet delivered more than the average phone. The Nokia 8310 impressed for the same reason, but boasted impressive graphics, ingenious voice handling, and will forget its beautiful white glowing display. The Nokia 3650 impressed because it delivered Nokia's first "expandable" memory coupled with a rather different phone interface that actually worked better than the conventional keypad. Sadly, consumers never responded well to the phone's uniqueness and it for conventional keypads. Typical of the average consumer - but in this world it's the consumer that dictates.

There have been others like the Sony Ericsson P900i, the Motorola RAZR, the Sony Ericsson S700i with its Cyber-Shot 1.3 megapixel digital camera. This little baby was designed to be both a phone and a digital camera - an idea that has sadly again been lost on the average twit consumer who moans about the phone's bulkiness yet forgets that when held like a camera, it all makes perfect sense. The S700i still boasts the best small screen of any cellphone yet launched and to be launched in the months to come.

The Sony Ericsson K750i is very conventional - with two very striking exceptions: it's 2 megapixel camera and its brilliant music player. A few small other features like a radio with RDS (shows the station name) and AF (tracks the station you're listening to), stereo earplugs ... a few small features that help to make this phone truly exceptional.

So I ask you... why do you bother with lesser devices when Sony Ericsson so clearly delivers the exceptional? I ask you this... why? Consumers are creatures of habit and are unwilling to venture and try something new. They sing the same tune and many manufacturers basically cater for this - give them what they want and they'll be happy.

I asked my colleague who is the proud owner of a new D500 - Do you have a radio? The response was a rather blank look... she handed me the phone and asked me to look if there was one. There wasn't. A simple little feature... that helps to keep me informed about my world... for free. At 5H30am each morning I gym... with K750i in my pocket holding five CDs... it's fun and really lekker to gym with music pumping in my ears... at 7H10am I capture a Cape Town sunrise from my office window and celebrate life with my friends around the globe - Bluetoothing the high res image to my PowerBook and emailing it to my peeps. I SMS from my PowerBook... it's really nice and it's cool to receive the response on my PowerBook's display.

Small things - but things that make my day an enjoyable day. Lastly, I go to bed without setting my alarm because my K750i has a recurring alarm. I will wake to either the Crazy Frog if I'm in the mood, or to the radio playing on my cellphone. That's life... it's not 3G but it makes me happy. I'll be patient with 3G. Somethings in life are just better matured... 3G = patchy reception, dropped calls, no one to video call, shit battery life... I like my K750i. Give me Sony Ericsson any day.

A question for all SE P910i owners in SA (or anyone else who's able to answer...):

Does anyone know if it is possible to make use of the Vodacom blackberry service using the Blackberry application that has been made for the P910i?

Posted by WirelessMonkey
Not yet but I think that it will happen very soon. For now there is another: visit http://www.dataviz.com/products/roadsync/uiq/index.html for more info on RoadSync.

FROM THE SITE:

RoadSync allows you to manage your corporate Outlook inbox, edit and send attachments, accept meetings and lookup key contacts all from your Sony Ericsson P900 or P910 smartphone. You can even send and receive Word, Excel and PowerPoint attachments via Documents To Go as well as download and open other common attachments like digital pictures, movies and mp3s. Plus, since your handheld is truly in sync with the corporate server, all updates made while on the go will be automatically reflected when you open Outlook on your desktop. With RoadSync, you can now stay connected and be more productive no matter where the day takes you.

Unlike other solutions, RoadSync is based on the Exchange ActiveSync protocol licensed directly from Microsoft which provides secure, wireless and direct synchronization with Exchange 2003. This new technology is optimized for mobile devices and provides an easy to implement and low-cost corporate e-mail solution without the typical service fees, middleware servers or need to keep a desktop computer running. So although RoadSync may require a quick conversation with your IT department, setup and installation is simply a matter of enabling mobile privileges on the server and entering a few settings on the device. Its fast, easy and reliable, so download a free fully functional technology preview version today (http://www.dataviz.com/eforms/betaprograms/roadsync/rs_start.html).

Exactly the point I've been making to all the early adopters. Bumped into a friend from high school who just happened to work at Vodacom in client services and he said they would only have widespread coverage towards the end of the year.

Right now I'm enjoying the K600i more than the 3G experience because there is no experience to speak of with the patchy coverage. BTW, MTN ain't much better either...connected to wap from my gf's apartment and speeds were nice and fast, once I got to my neighbourhood it was back to GPRS albeit faster than Vodacom's GPRS.

Damn... Mr.Singe sans fil, you bring tears to my eyes wth that narrative... Not being facetious, i genuinely feel what you're saying. You're sorely tempting me to switch allegiance to SE... And it's what so many ppl miss out on- that their mobiles are more than just telephones... Nice one, bro

Thank you gentlemen - yes I do love my Sony Ericsson but I love GSM technology more and my elegance is to the technology first before any one brand. Today I've also posted the Motorola iTunes phone - another company that people should look for their inspirational designs.

LIVE 8 rules!

For a very fair and extremely comprehensive review of the Sony Ericsson K750i please visit here: http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_ericsson_k750-review-41.php

The future of Sony Ericsson? One internet site has posted a few futuristic SE designs. No details given and everything is in a foreign language - pretty pictures though http://www.slashphone.com/84/1015.html

Below is a shot of what could be the successor of the P910i - 3G, wifi, GPS, 3 megapixels. What's interesting and what lends a great deal of credibility to this image is that it looks a lot like the Sony Cleo, Sony's once popular PDA that's been discontinued. It also has the look and feel of current SE phones.

Anybody know anything bout MTN new billing system? How they charge for gprs? Charged me R1 for everytime i connected this morning. Grrr

Posted by brix25
R1 seems a bitexcessive. Have you called their customer service for clarity?

Posted by Kryptik
Good morning from a chilly Grahamstown Arts Festival. It's a sunny 2degrees, and here at the Monument i've seen so many mobiles and pda's my head's spinning...

Posted by WirelessMonkey
According to MTN's T&C posted on their website - "Charges are rounded up to the nearest cent, per session i.e. a minimum charge of R0.01 applies to each new session."

See full T&C here: http://www.mtn.co.za/?pid=232081

Posted by brix25
@Kryptik... What's GPRS like on your network in Grahamstown.

Posted by sIssIs
...Just read in the newspaper today that MTN already has 5000 3G subscribers. ...Is this the first week's 3G subscribers or is it only their "testers"? MTN also says, they're going to launch HSPDA soon.

Posted by Rhino8
MTN customer care still think we get billed R45 per meg

@ WM, I presume you meant Sony Clie, not Sony Cleo?

Over the past month I have had the opportunity to try out Carphonewarehouses's exclusive simcard, called Mobileworld.
It is only available on PAYG and the simcard costs £10.
It has the same local call charges as their own 'Fresh' simcards, PLUS much cheaper international calling prices than any other UK network, excluding O2's ITT (International Talk and Text bolt-on, which is competitive with off-peak call prices)
The reason I am sharing this is that to phone an SA landline using this simcard costs 8p, and to call SA cell numbers costs 20p.
Pretty close to LOCAL SA peak cell network prices, isn't it?
(Although there is a 2.5p surcharge between 7pm to 9pm.)

http://www.carphonemobileworl[....]leworld/servlet/gben-home-Home

The reception and clarity are actually quite good, and I have only experienced a little 'delay' or echo on a few occasions over the past month.

Having said all this, I think our buddy Mario probably still has the best/ cheapest solutions for calling, including abroad, with his third-party software wizardry...

Posted by Kryptik
Had to refresh MTN settings once, left Vodacom untouched, and it's absolutely 100z here... Excellent reception, networks are truly zipping along. MTN seems much faster than Vodacom ;o)

Yes, but I've heard it referred to as the Cleo PDA / Series ... but it's the same thing I guess. eGoolised shows the Clié when you search for Cleo. But you know what I mean

Finally viewed some streaming videos on my K700i via MTN GPRS although it's not perfect it's ok for now. Would love to get some wap site with streaming audio.

Posted by Kryptik
@ Brix, how about trying out an app like Virtual Radio? I mostly listen to the Comedy Channel, and it streams quite well via Voda once the buffer's been established

Posted by brix25
I'll search for Virtual Radio but about 5 minutes ago I watched a Supersport 2 feed over GPRS...poor video quality, then again it's GPRS but I'm enjoying the novelty value of watching tv on my phone.

Posted by sIssIs
Hey brix what is that feed's address? I'm going to Namibia on Wednesday.

Another 1st from Vodacom:The Smallest 3G phone ony 95grams......Samsung Z500 has 1.3mega pixel camera+ flash,262000 TFT LCD,BT and a transflash memcard. It plays MP3 files and ringtones.Design is almost the same as the popular E700 and the size as well.THE Z500 comes in BLACK and SILVER.Coming soon and EXCLUSIVE TO VODACOM for a short period.Other 3G phones are blocks compare to the Z500.Samsung 3G phones are going to kill the competition.

Posted by brix25
@slssls: Can watch it over GPRS but it's touch and go coz the video quality is horrid... I got into a 3G cell then watched the feed and it totally blew me away. Here it is.... (censored)

BRIX try the m-net and 5fm websites(the live feed)... thats impressive!!

Posted by Rhino8
Hmmm nice one. But now, would it be possible to stream on my k700 via MTN Gprs or not?

Posted by brix25
@Rhino: I'm using both my K700 and the K600... Could watch the feed via GPRS on the K600 but not on the K700 even with the MTN sim inserted and all the correct settings.

Posted by Rhino8
Ya. Says connection successfull, and then something fails.

Posted by random hero
Hi guys

Where do I get the settings for streaming? I tried *123# but it says my phone is not compatible. I have a D500. Will it even work at all on my phone?

@random hero: Welcome to the thread. Don't know if the D500 supports streaming media. My guess is probably not. The latest SE's and Nokia's(I think) supports streaming media. I've posted the link a couple of posts back. Currently only available through MTN.

Posted by random hero
Thanks. Will give it a try on a 6230.
