I don't think it can be true ! If is true, Vodacom will kill them self ! There will be chaps like me out there who will use to connect to the net thru the cellphone while the phone is on the net and download huge amounts of data for days on end.I remember to have done this once before on mtn last year sometimes.Mtn bloked the usual cellmodem so most of the chaps could'nt do it,but the S60 operating system (which I know it quite well - C++) allowed me to make a bluetooth network between all my bluetooth enabled devices.Whith such a configuration I was able to use a DNS server of my own and not mtn's (which only allowed wap site address) unfortunatelly the speed got slower and slower and eventualy mtn stopped free gprs all together :-( I really hope you are right and the first Vodacom branded S60 cell on the market will be mine ;-)

I just read on mobileafrica.net that MTN is launching 3G, today. Now, according to the news, Mtn prefers to launch SEAMLESS and effective communication. Thus, it first rolled out EDGE in November last year and now 3G. Unlike Vodacom, making noise about being the first 3G in SA, MTN 3G subscribers have access to EDGE and GPRS where 3G is not available. What do you think about this?

I had a choice betw RZR and replacement 6600 a while back (brought in frm Uzbekistan or somewhere exotic) and i chose 2 stay wth Nokia. Those mobiles do look good tho... As for EDGE, 3G, VODALIVE, etc, my view is to let them sort it out amongst themselves. Ultimately we'll end up wth better deals than we currently have.

@A1, 1stly vodacom users can also use GPRS when out of 3G.

>> I think Vodacom saved the money on EDGE masts, and used it on the 3G masts >> which means more 3G most ... aint i right?
>> You need a EDGE mobile to access EDGE. Aaaaand if you could choose a 3G mobile above an EDGE mobile ... you would rather go for the 3G one. ((and i know there's 3G/EDGE/GPRS mobiles ... but going to die sometime))

Point form: (Easy and clearly)
1) Most upcoming mobile is just going to stick to 3G.
2) Most 3G mobiles now available doesn't support EDGE.
3) Well if your 3G mobile does support EDGE, and you drop out of a 3G area into an EDGE are, you can't make Video Calls/ if you were busy with one, it would disconnect.
4) 3.5G and 4G is on their way... then byebye EDGE mobiles
5) Through which way would you connect? EDGE or 3G? ... I would take 3G
6) Vodacom has Vodafone on their side... which means Vodafone can help Vodacom make desicions on stuff Vodafone did wrong in the past.

Oh... yep.. if you have a Vodafone Live! mobile you can connect for free to VLive! or and other pages(via Vlive! settings though)
And you don't have to bye a R29 Value Pack(every month) to access VLive! for free, where did you people come up with that.

Like I said you can't access content on the portal for free... besides that point I've noticed the 3G reception at my office actually in most of Cape Town quite patchy except near the airport...I'm trying to connect to Esato via 3G with the Vlive! settings but keep getting an error message.

Posted by celltech
@sIssIs, it is very possible to make a video call on edge, the only thing is your picture quality is not that good and you will never drop the call when moving from 3g to edge as youve mentioned, and also edge and 3g is not only about data, your speech quality and drop call rate is far better on any network thats running gprs\edge\3g.........

Brix... isn't it obvious that content must be charged? On MTNLoaded it's charged, on ANY like VLive! it's charged. And VLive! gives you the headlines on news, sports, etc. free. When u browse through the songs, etc. it's free. What more would you want from Vlive! ? MTNLoaded and Exactmobile, etc. isn't even 80% close to what Vodafone Live! Offer, and functionality. Again what more would you want? Sorry .. I said this calm... just wanted to inform you ALL. Thats all.

@slssls: "Free" is just a bloody red herring coz most people would assume that they wouldn't have to pay for anything one Vodafone Live.

But that's besides the point...as much as the V800 is a lovely phone sans the horrble alterations I've unfortunately not been sold on Vodafone Live.

Like I said earlier they need to work on 3G reception first before touting a service and this includes MTN and anyone who wants to hype a service that's clearly not available in many areas.

Vodafone Live has lots of content and that's what counts in it's favour, yes it beats MTNloaded hands down...no disputing there but and this is a BIG one the issue of branding handsets and removing some features like "My Friends" is just not on.

That's my opinion and I'm expecting to be stoned by all the Vodacom zealouts on the thread.

Posted by sIssIs
I still think the Vodafone Branded mobile's menu's are:
(1) easier and (2) much more exciting/cool looking.

Well... "My friends" isn't going to stop me from buying the Best 3G Mobile of 2005, even other stupid little thing won't either. I just think Vodafone took off what most people don't use.

Are you on crack? Most people who bought the V800 actually want to flash the firmware to that of the Z800 and many people want to use My Friends. And no the Vodafone Live menu icons ain't pretty compared to the original SE icons.

Just wondering... Is a zealot worse than a zealout? Both sound kinda scary... In my mind's eye i can see the foam-flecked lips... the bloodshot eyes... the banners demanding death to all who differ from their opinions...

Posted by Tahir Ally
I see everyone including MTN bitching about EDG .But MTN customers who buy 3G data card from MTN will not be able to EDGE.VODACOM and MTN use the same wireless connect cards. Why is everyone so quiet about MTN 3G......With MTN 3G you pay more for video calls and free minutes do not apply.MTN launch 3G today and i dont think they did JUSTICE in marketing 3G..Who is better NOW......Vodacom South Africa's Leading Cellular Network.

Posted by brix25
@Tahir: No-one has said anything about MTN coz no-one has used the service yet...hopefully I'll use it soon and give my unbiased feedback to everyone on the thread.

Posted by mario2002
Huh buddies, some of you talk about 4G like is going to happen tomorrow. The fact of the matter is,2G took almost 10y to become what it is today.3G was outdated the day it was released because of political matters (took to long to be implemented) Yes 3.5G may be with us in a few years (no major cell manufacturer has a 3.5G handset in store yet nor plans to build one) . 4G is a different network altogether. If you look at its (proposed) coding sheme one can't oversee the similarity to WIMAX-both use orthogonal frq modulation ! Now to talk today about 4G is like talking in '96/'97 about 3G or in '85 about 2G GSM !

Posted by Aalpha001
Mario. Thanks for your unpassionate message. Nothing could be truer.

I just read that Vodacom has announced plans for 3.5G, though.

Handsets are not yet available, but data cards would be available by the end of the year and handsets, next year.

Posted by Tahir Ally
BRIX why dont you tell all of us here that MTN CHARGES its customers for VIDEO CALLS and FREE MINUTES do not apply.MTN always said in the past "1 of the reasons we at MTN will delay 3G is because there is not much phones available".Well Well MTN only has 3 3G phones to choose from Vodacom has 5.And as some one posted here that most 3G phones dont support edge.I agree with him EDGE is pretty useless.I will say it again MTN DATA CARD DOES NOT SUPPORT EDGE BUT DOES SUPPORT 3G.

Posted by brix25
I don't work for MTN so please spare me the hatred. U can join Cosatu and march to MTN's offices and complain about the datacard and the videocalls. BTW they've got 4 phones. Have anyone video called someone recently? Tahir is mad coz MTN have not offered it for free...It doesn't make sense 2 offer it for free as so few people actually use it, I guess it's the same on Vodacom.

Posted by Kryptik
Popcorn, anyone? The show's about to start.

Posted by Tahir Ally
Brix what i ment was MTN is charging its 3G customers more for video calls than normal voice calls and free minutes do not apply. With Vodacom video calls and normal voice calls are the same and free minutes do apply.

Posted by brix25
I don't even want to attempt a video call with 3G reception that's so dire it might take another 6 months till this technology finally embraces the mass market.

Posted by Kryptik
Where does CellSheep fit into this entire melee?

Posted by brix25
They're busy trying to finalise a deal with Richard Branson. Don't know about their plans for 3G even though they've promised it but I guess that was more hype than substantial.

Posted by Tahir Ally
Cell C promises to hae 3G by 2nd half of this year..........MTN charging R599 for Z800i on mycall 100 when Vodacom is giving the V800 for free with reduced subs.Makes you think huh.......THIS is where Vodafones buying power comes in

Posted by Kryptik
Would be great if they finally came to the party with a substantial offer. As matters now stand it's pretty much a 2horse race...

Good morning, guyz... Bitterly cold and wet in PE this morning, but at least i'm on holiday for the next 3weeks ;o) Have a brilliant week, folks

Folks

Anybody into Mobile development?

U know wap sites or even java games.

I did a little bit of that but, I realized that there wasn't enough time.

To really focus into it.

Bongzino - X

Posted by brix25
Unfortunately I'm not but I'd like to see some local wap sites...don't think any exist... Was looking for IOL only to discover they had their content on the Vodafone Live portal.

Posted by TeenInvader
I would be developing a wap portal.

I still need to decide on the content, though.

I will make the PC version too.

May I get suggestions, on the content and style.

Posted by Mohil
A question for Tahir:
Does Vodacom plan on keeping its video-call rates the same as its voice-call rates forever, or is it just a limited-period (introductory) special?

Posted by Kryptik
There's a dearth of S.African sites... Had a rude shock when i ran a search thru Google and Jeeves once for local sites... A few chaps seem to have tried without much success, so anything local would be appreciated. As to content and style, i suppose the adage less is more is applicable...

Posted by JK
any1 no MTN's vid call rates????

Posted by brix25
Why are people all of a sudden interested in video calls when so few people in your phonebook own a 3G phone? I just want faster downloads, better call quality and streaming media.Wouldn't want my girlfriend video calling me if I was in a strip club.

Posted by Kryptik
True... I think it's the novelty value more than actual practical value that's biting their asses... As for strip clubs... Ho hum... The less said the better ;o) (we only go there for educational purposes, aint it?)

Posted by brix25
@Kryptic: I went to Teazers for some Bulgarian lessons...LOL:-)

Posted by Kryptik
I once went to the Ranch for some Romanian instruction in feline maintenance ;-) Very skilfull people, those Romanians...

Posted by Mohil
Brix, you realise that if you are in a strip club, and if your girlfriend video-calls you, you can always answer as a voice call. You're not obligated to only answer as a video call. And then you can say that you're not in a 3G network, that's why you can't receive a video call.

Posted by Kryptik
Don't lie to her. Just be sparing with the truth ;-)

Posted by Rhino8
Video call can be good if you need to go out of town for a day or two.... If you have a girlfriend that is.

Posted by mario2002
Does't the system inform you if the other party is able to connect to the video call you initiate or not ? In which case you can't simply say 'I am not in a 3G cell'

Posted by brix25
Right now I'm in a 3G cell and speeds on wap is awesomely fast...think I'll download that Beastie Boys video.

Posted by celltech
Hi guy's anyone on MTN with a 3G handset pm your no. I will call you from my mobile to test out 3G......

Posted by brix25
@celltech: That'll be the Wireless Monkey who's got his K600 on MTN.

Posted by Kryptik
Lesson One- Place finger over front-mounted camera... Then claim that the mobile's "faulty" Problem solved.

Posted by TeenInvader
The Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo that comes with V800/Other SE phone.

Can I get the bigger sizes? I like listening to MP3 on my phone.

@Brix thanks, will PM WM............

@bong

U can get a 2gig mem card.. for around R800..

Posted by Kryptik
Yeah... There's some obscure cell supply shop in Cape Town where my brother bought his mem card for some ridiculous sum. I priced a 1Gb for about R470 when i spoke to them

Posted by sIssIs
I also want to but a bigger memory stick? Anyone know great prices for great sizes?

Wow you people talk a lot.

MTN actually suprised me with their one 3G advert. About the Video Calling... but in which other way can you advertise Video Calling. I can't wait till Vodafone Live! with 3G adverts starts to come on telly.

...well what else can we talk about...

Posted by brix25
Hopefully I'll pick up the K600 this week. The Wireless Monkey says he's bored.

Posted by RicK700i
Did u know its now R10/MB for Vodacom gprs.I've seen it on a CallMe SMS.I must say this thread is much more interesting than Prodigits' South Africa thread
