any cheapo mobiles in SA?

Posted by amawanqa
@ PK: We (unfortunately) always fly during peak season/time, so it's usually around £600 each.. (both the mrs & I are teachers, so we holiday with the masses in late July and August). WRT cheap mobiles, there certainly are similar options as the UK, both in price and range, but the mid and high end mobiles are definitely more expensive. Vodafone phones aplenty, which I'm sure you'll be happy to hear. ;-)

@hobbs and gucci,
i did the same thing, i installed a font. booted up the phone, the phone booted up but then it wud crash, sometimes it wudnt even boot. but i removed the memory card. then booted up. everythin was fine. i put the mc back in. deleted the font and i tried another font and everythin is fine. it was just that font. but its hard 2 find a nice font that has all the symbols.

Ahh just dowloaded maps 2.0 and now my 12 month licence is in its f-u in! So no navigation whatsoever 4 me, im so dissapointed, tried to reflash the firmware but nsu doesnt want to work...

@Ama 600Pound is not cheap, is it? I fly with Swissair for 500 to Zuerich. It might be a somewhat 'special price' because I am a 'regular', but still 600 I think is a ripoff Mind you, the fuel price is 'sky-hi'
Did you chaps read in the paper about SAA ? I remember a time long ago when SAA was one of the best ! ! ! (That was f...k'n very long ago) They had a moto like - 'we did not invent flying, but we perfected it' (or something like that).
@Kripta, Did you check the Herald a few day's ago, about that Police Capt. from J'Bay? Guess who is the video camera 'expert' to testify in court? After the whole saga is over uTube here I come.

Yep, ive just learnt to live with the default font bro, i deleted Font Router. By the way are you able to install Brothers In Arms on Ngage??? Everytime i try install it,it says Unable to install with no reason.
JC
Dude Maps2.0 has caused havoc on my N81, ive actualy decided to start using Google Maps, its realy accurate, last nite in the train, i couldn't tell where we were and all i did was boot up G-Maps and in a few seconds it showed everything on a EDGE connection.
Hows the new phone otherwise? Have you hacked it?
NSU should allow you to reinstall the firmware.

Posted by JC08
@ gucci, mate its very kwl, but it crashes when im doing to many things at a time. I downloaded the newest version of nsu from nokia's site and it still gave this error, its freakin bullshite!

Nah, if you can find a cheaper price than that for late July and early August, i.e. peak holiday season here, and with dates ranging within a 4-week window, then I may just add you onto my Christmas card mailing list.
LOL, for the extra distance (from Zurich to London) and to pay the extra 100 for both there and back during the peak time period, I ain't complaining at all, boet.
So sayeth Wanqa (to quote the Hobbster:) The Research King, LOL.

The cheapest I've ever paid for both the better half and I (again in PEAK season, with our selected dates) was in 2005. That came to 900-odd for both of us.

@ Hobbster: Glad you managed to save it, boet.

It's been a fantastic day here in Jozi. Amazed at all these new malls springing up the whole time; there's always building going on.
Went to Greenstone Shopping Centre last night, then was in other parts of 'The Vale' later in the evening.
Today we jolled around the northern 'burbs, including North Gate and that rather exclusive Eagle Canyon complex and course, then checking out the fantastic Harley stores in Clearwater and later Rivonia Road.

Welcome to the smartphone world, crashes are a norm, but then again the N78 is fairly new, running a brand new platform so random crashes and other glitches here and there are no suprise, but NOKIA will improve it, my N81 had 2crashes with in the 1st day i had it because i did too much, now with the latest FW its realy stable,im able to do a lot without it "falling over". You'll get the hang of it. If you realy want to update its FW i suggest going to Prodigits S60 Forum, and searching for NSS NSU topic.

@gucci,
i cant live with the default them. its so plain and borin. after gettin a few to work ill never go bck 2 the original. yeah i installed brothers in arms quite awhile ago. and it works fine. i hvent really played it that much. i cant really be bothered with ngage games. but i cnt seem 2 get pro series of golf 2 work. i downloaded the repacked 1. but i still cnt play in career mode. oh well. lol

To give you and idea re cheapish mobiles in SA, from SA's biggest network, you can check these SA PAYG prices out, then divide by 15 (current/approximate exchange rate) to get it into Pounds :

http://www.vodacom.co.za/getSpecials.do

As you can see, still cheaper from CPW, mate.

Apparently Greenstone is said to be the largest mall in the Southern Hemisphere, i dont think thats true though, im sure Australia has much larger malls, what did you think of it? I was there with a friend on Tuesday, went bowling and watched a movie, she says its a useless mall because it doesnt have a GUESS or Edgars lol women.
I suggest you checkout Cedar Square, its on Cedar Road in Fourways just off Witkoppen.

LOL! Im still using the very same theme i found when i 1st got this phone, i get bored of those flashy themes after a while and usualy prefer the built-in themes. The only theme id realy like is the FP2 Nseries 1 theme, its almost like the Nseries 1 theme in FP1 but without the blue, and its a lot blacker if thats even a word. Lol

@ Gucci:
Yeah Greenstone is quite impressive. Chowed at the Spur downstairs, checked out a few of the book shops near the car and bike displays etc.
Not sure where we're all headed tomorrow and Monday before we fly back, but I'll mention Cedar Square and see if we have time to check it out. Was hoping to get round to Monte Cassino again, but doesn't look like we're gonna have time for that either..

BTW, what's with the Spur putting on that flippin' hillbilly country song every now and again, causing all the Spur staff to start jiving in lines along the restaurant's aisles?! Ohhh-Kayyy.... LOL.

lol! boet i have no idea, thank goodness i hardly ever go to Spur, i feel sorry for the staff who have to do that.

@JC Thats a pain that it crashes so much. How much RAM does that N78 have.GSMArena says 96mb.Is that right? How much RAM do you have after booting up the phone? After boot-up Im left with 90.88mb of RAM and multi-tasking is a breeze and I havent updated my firmware.Since I've had the phone its crashed once at the very beginning and nothing since.Maybe Im just lucky or the N95-2 is a sweet, solid unit.

@Wangs.Sounds like you've had an absolutely fabulous time.South Africa was glad to have you back for two weeks.Dont be a stranger now. This is quite a special place even with its downsides. And it sounds like you eat alot at the Spur.lol

@GUCCI Default font for me to buddy But I've got to admit one thing. After the initial high when getting a new phone and installing every Tom,Dick and Harold of an app,a Hard Reset is quite a pleasurable thing.A nice clean phone and a time to reflect and slow down to just putting on your phone what you going to use.So in the end its all well.

@Peter.Us poor sods over in SA are always quite shocked to hear some of the prices Wanga throws at us of some of the phones over there from CPW.Damn cheap especially when they clearance prices.

@Kyle Did I read correctly in regards to your mini laptop, 2GB Hard-drive space. No way can that be right.(To lazy to go back and check your post so correct me if Im wrong)

Posted by JC08
@ hobbs dunno whats the ram on start up, it just crashes when I have a few apps running and Im constantly changing between them, and Ive tried NSU again this morning to check if its working but I keep getting this connection error telling me to check the connection or firewall...

Posted by kyle_274
@hobbs,
its not me with the mini laptop. i think its TI. or maybe jc. sorry. i forgot who

Posted by HOBBS
TeenInvader,thats right,sorry Kyle.

@JC Try switching off your firewall or anti-virus software just while you update.Maybe that will work.

Posted by JC08
@ hobbs, I did, its so freakin frustrating

Posted by HOBBS
That sucks JC.I dont know what the problem could be.Take it in and get them to upgrade your firmware.Isnt it free?

Posted by JC08
@ hobbs, I did a hard reset a few hours ago, so far so good. Got Maps 1.2 back and it hasn't crashed as yet!

Posted by GUCCI.011
Hobbs
Thats very true. I did the very same when i 1st got my N81. When im bored i usualy just delete apps that i don't use. But ye a format is so much better, its like your phone is new again this time you just put in what you need and not over do it.
Both N78 and N81 have 96MB RAM with around 41-48mb of RAM at start up.
All
So went to play golf today since we are staying in a golf estate after all, man they are realy strict on golf wear. I mistakenly wore black jeans and had to go to the golfshop to buy formal pants and as well as a golf shirt cause i had forgoten that as well, in Dainfern Golf estate i usualy get away with it if i forget lol.
Anyway took a lot of pics, some realy big and beautiful properties in this estate, most are holiday homes, like the one we are renting for this week. The pics i took were taken by N81 because yes i FORGOT the K850,i left it charging in my room. Will upload later. Best part is that no matter where we are in this estate we have an amazing view of Table Mountain, the CBD and Robben Island ps. Theres also full EDGE, 3G and HSDPA signal here. To save battery ive turned off 3G/hsdpa on both phones since EDGE is fast enough.

Posted by JC08
Damn HSDPA is shockingly fast... I downloaded a 7mb song today in like 30 seconds... On the pc a 22mb file takes 2 minutes to download!

GUCCI, no problem. Well it's not particularly a breathtaking movie, so don't think you missing much. Obviously it's about golf, more like the hiphop scene versus the uptown classy world of golf. It's one of those funny movies so it's alright, but don't think it will appeal to all age groups...

LOL, ya I'm a Spur slut, 'cos it's cheap and I'm a cheapskate, LOL.

Hobbster, we've had a blast in SA for not 2 but nearly 4 weeks; and time has literally flown by!
We're actually thinking of flying to SA again next year, around the same time, because we all know what's happening around this time in 2010...
Can you imagine the air fares, crowds and costs of everything then? I'll be staying up here for 2010, methinks...

We fly out to Germany tonight, spend tomorrow morning in Frankfurt's city centre before catching a short hour and a half flight to London City Airport... no Heathrow Airport to contend with, woohoo! LOL.

So long guys, Da Wanqsta has had a memorable jol in his native SA and I'll start uploading some pics tomorrow night, all being well.

How's your K850i holding up? I've waited long enough for the X1 and am fed up with waiting that I'm considering a "dumb" phone for the first time ever on my business line. Always used a "dumb" one on my personal line.

I'm really, really fussy hence my limited options.

Had a look at the N82 and it just doesn't appeal to me, the one that I keep having second thoughts about is the E90- love it but the size keeps getting in the way! I would still get the X1 if it came out next month but that is wishful thinking. So, for now I'm looking at the K850i ( for design, HSDPA-even if it is 3.6Mbps and not 7.2, good earpiece volume and a few nice extras here and there). Am also concerned about bugs that haven't been fixed.

I'm staying away from any LG and Samsung, not my cup of tea! No sliders either. The C902 evokes similar feelings as the N82.

Looking forward to your early experiences.

Mario, i see that you'll be in court again next week, boet. What a stupid thing for that officer to have done!!

Speaking of stupid, a gang of idiots tried to hold up a cash-in-transit vehicle a few minutes ago at the filling station up the road from the school. Initially i thought i'd heard the backfire of a car's exhaust, but after the 4th bang it became obvious that some heavy calibre weapon was being discharged. From the looks of things at this stage one of the idiots has been downed and one other arrested.

Posted by HOBBS
Now that kind of hunting I dont condone Mario-'Idiot hunting' lol

Yeah Wangs, farewell and we'll see you on the flipside.
By the way,my Korean friend updated his P1i firmware and when he checked his Phone Status after successfully updating,it has 2 of everything. His old firmware Organiser,Bluetooth,CDA letters&numbers ect and the latest firware Organiser,Bluetooth,CDA lyetters&numbers ect
How did yours look after you updated? I didnt have any advice to give him because Ive only updated a P990i and I thought maybe with the P1i its a new thing.Showing kinda like a firmware history. What you had and what you upgraded too.I dont know.

Hey there bro. The K850 is great, im realy loving this phone,im currently away on holiday and its proving to be a great camera phone but thats just about it. Im running the R1EA031 Voda FW and when i 1st got the phone it worked flawlessly but recently ive had a close call with BROD, and a few random reboots and freezing ALL happening whilest im running the Media app. For a Java or "dumb" phone its realy good, and apparently with R1F FW its very stable. My main phone is my NOKIA N81 s60 smartphone which has been FAR more stable, faster and just generally more reliable. If you're going to get a K850 you must have a reliable primary phone because no matter what anyone says the K850 is not a completely reliable phone, it makes a great spare-camera/loudspeaker phone though, earpiece volume is good, everything in it is good, the instability just puts it down.
Wanqa
SA will miss you boet! go well.

I'd suggest watching Be Cool, Cedric The Entertainer is hilarious in it. Cookout is just another one of those random wanna be black comedies, JaRule is in it so is Meagan Good, thats why i watched it

Ye,im realy interested in the N79. That was quick of NOKIA though, the N78 is not even 5months old and it already has a replacement coming in, and im guessing the N85 is the N81 replacement. N85 comes with music keys, gaming keys, N81 design with double slider and 10 Ngage games preinstalled, its definetly here to replace the N81. They are regurgitating these specs in diff shells to fill the shelves whilest they do the finishing touches to the next big thing(s), TUBE and 8MP Nseries.
