Brad you're refering to the K600...on of the smallest 3G to be released this year. On other threads I heard it might be out next month in the UK... On Vodafone it will be branded as the V600i. You should note though that this phone comes without expandable memory and has got more or less the same memory as the K700. Wouldn't you rather want to wait for the K800(Sakura), the 3G successor to the K700.

Posted by Tahir Ally
The SonyEricsson V600i should be available soon on Vodacom because its on the Coming Soon area.visit www.sonyericsson.com.And click on the South Africa region.............Samsung Z500 is the smallest 3G phone. It will be available from next month on Vodacom. Its the same size as Samsung E700

Guys i know i sound a little delayed but wat is the highest speed that a 3G fone can connect to?
CAn u also help me- im trying to get EDGE on my k700 , i called MTN SP and asked for settings but they said they do not have it yet- wats going on?

Posted by brix25
@gilani... Can't give you an answer to the first question but can tell you that currently there aren't any SE phones available that are EDGE-enabled. Your best bet is probably the Nokia 6230, 6630. You can also check out some of the latest models from Motorola which come with EDGE.

Posted by Tahir Ally
Current 3G phones speeds are up to 384 kps. This will change to 14mbs by early next year

Posted by zani_003
Wel the phone only has 32 mb which sucks ! They should have given it expandable memory! K800 ? Sounds gud. But i want a 3G mobile soon, even next month. Am i rushin? Also want a smartphone (confused)

Posted by Rhino8
I got the same problem mate.

On another subject. Can someone please give me some sites i can get info on voip.... Am to lazy to look back in this topic

Posted by brix25
Brad your best bet is to be patient...the goodies are yet to come.

Posted by mario2002
@Tahir don't talk to loud ! Someone may believe you ! 3.5G only support speeds of up to 2.4mbps ! And that only under 'ideal' conditions.Even worse, not even Nokia (market leader as of today) have any plans of supporting it ! The only thing they've mentionned is WIMAX and even those phones only come in 18-24 months :-(

Posted by RicK700i
Have anybody noticed dat u cant acess Prodigits with MTN.It doesnt with my MTN.

Posted by zani_003
On my contract sim i cudnt but on prepaid i cud. So u on contract or prepaid ?

Posted by brix25
I've got a PAYG MTN sim so haven't experienced any problems connecting to Prodigits. Also experienced the same problem initially trying 2 connect 2 Prodigits with my new phone but it's been resolved.

We will be staying in J-Bay for a while Mario, on our way to EL. Is your brother still getting you a 6680 from Deutschland?
@ Tahir, I'm impressed to hear that the Samsung Z500 is on the way to SA. They are not even mentioned in the UK's carphonewarehouse's 'coming soon' section yet. Gr8.

I got a contract MTN sim, strange that it doesnt allow any acess 2 Prodigit.

Posted by brix25
Any problems with other portals? I know some international networks don't allow access to sites like mcommunity.biz because of legal issues with the content on some of those sites.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@ amawanga.Someone from Samsung SA told me the Z500 is coming in July to SA.

Posted by sIssIs
I'm also impatient to get another 3G mobile. I'm due to an upgrade in this month...... but i can't wait .... the networks are slow getting more(better) 3G mobiles. Hey brix do u maybe have a site with the SE K800? Can't find it.

Staèí øíct !!

Posted by Tahir Ally
I have been watching this forum for a while and i noticed some BRIGHT SPARKS have invented their own phones. There is NO SUCH THING AS K800.There V800,Z800 W800 and P800 in the SonyEricsson product range.

Posted by brix25
Right now the K800 is just a rumour. Search the forums for some cryptic clues by some Esato posters in the know. Heard that Icasa will be investigating 24 month contracts and whether they are competitive.

Posted by gilani
@tahir So by next year 3g speeds wil be at about 14mbs, wil this speed only be available with new fones that are still to be released or with current models as well.@the rest. Im planning to buy a nokia n91 when its out- is it really worth buying or are are there better handsets out there

Posted by Tahir Ally
The Nokia Nseries is not a 3.5G phone.Max speed is 384kbs.3.5G phones should be available late this year or early next year

Posted by gilani
@tahir. thanks 4 da info-helps alot

Posted by Tahir Ally
NO PROBLEM.Just feel FREE TO ASK

Posted by zani_003
Oh about da prodigits thing. U cant access it via a contract sim lyk i had said. Why ? No clue! It kinda stinks

Posted by mario2002
@Tahir Your info helps but it would help more if is true ! Where did you read about vodacom and 3.5G at 14mbps ? Also who are the companies to launch phones supporting 3.5G later this year?Yes I know about WIMAX and I love it as you can see from my earlyer posts.I think if WIMAX cellphones comes out,the cell companies will have to join it or die ! They will loose bussines anyway.Certainly they will have to drop their data charges to realistic levels if anybody is to buy the WIMAX offer as a fixed connection !

Posted by gilani
Confused.? Wat are average speeds for wimax thing

Posted by mario2002
Well WIMAX is the bigger brother of WIFI.Is a radio link/network with a range up to 50KM and 70mbps.In reality the range and speeds are much less but still above anything we have today. There was one standard already approved as you read this and Intel already released a chip with which a WIMAX pcmcia/pci card can be build. All the networks like the idea as a last mile solution, but the cellphone companies (Nokia,Motorola etc) have realized the advantage and argue about a WIMAX mobile standard ! Should that come out (and it will)the following scenario is possible.Buy a wimax-mobile card and install in your pc.Network your pc and cell and phone using the adsl within a 50 km radius of your pc.Exactly this can be done today(more as a joke) over a bluetooth network (10 m range) and shortly over a wifi network using the N91 cell (over a 150-200m).Also Ipv6 (internet protocol) will make inroads in a few years and then even a full video call can be done !

My favourite site for free downloads is back up again... t610wap.com ...all the latest mp3's can be found there as well as some good java games.

Hi, people. It's my first post here, but I've been reading this board for a while now, and I think I ought to add a few things:

1: What is Prodigits? I've been seeing this name all over the board.

2: To Tahir Ally: I really think you need to calm down. I'm an avid Vodacom supporter like you, but you really are doing more harm than good by forcing your opinions onto others.

3: It's a fact: Vodacom's GPRS service really is terrible as of recently, whether over the internet or on MMS. It's unreliable. And providing excuses as to why it is that way does not rectify the situation.

4: Can you imagine if Sony released the Playstation 2 with nothing but Wild Wild Racing to play for the next 3 months? That's what 3G is like in SA with it's "wide" selection of 3G phones.

5: I keep reading about people trying to choose between a 3G phone or Smartphone. I can't understand why. 6680 is both in one.

6: Tahir, you really need to learn some etiquette and respect. I believe that Nokia is the best phone manufacturer, but I don't go around convincing SE and Samsung fans to change to Nokia. I respect their opinions.

Anyways, I didn't mean to offend anyone. But I do believe that people have the rights to their opinions.
Thanks!

lots to say guy... whyd u only join now????

vodas "wide" selection??? voda has 8!!!

im not sure how many their are but i doubt there more than 12!!!

and vodas doesnt want the 6630...

3g will grow its only out for 6 months give it sometime... most people still have no clue whats it about...

even gprs alot of people have it but dont use it!!!! they dont even know its exists!!!!!!!- exept for sending pics!!

Posted by Mohil
8? I only know 4:
Moto E1000, V980
SE V800
Sharp 902

Maybe there are others that are still waiting to be released.
(BTW I meant 3G phones, not Vodafone Live. SE F500 isn't 3G)

Posted by JK
oops sorry.. u rite!

but how many are out in the UK for example?

Posted by Mohil
I don't know, but I'm sure the networks there don't take 6 months to compliance-test their phones. I mean there's only so much a phone can do. Does it really take so long to get through everything? I'm sure even something as advanced like a Nokia 7710 or SE P910 takes nothing more than a month to compliance-test overseas.

People at Vodacom claim that the manufacturers are slow in releasing their phones, but I think the real reason is that their phones are in compliance-testing for so long. I've got an email that I've kept going for months to the support centre regarding the "progress" of the 6680's (and 6630) compliance-test. Very boring to read if you ask me.

By the way, what is Prodigits???

Prodigits is a chat site. Not a very advanced one and i dont use it, but its a chat site

Just for the record, these are the CURRENT 3G handsets available in the UK:
O2: O2 X4 (BenQ), 6630, V975 and Samsung Z107, (6680 soon.)

T-Mobile and Virgin: 6630

Orange: Samsung V107, 6680, Sanyo S750, LG U8150, C975 and some branches still have the Z1010

Vodafone: 902, V975, E1000, 6630, V800

3: NEC e616V, NEC e313, NEC 338, NEC e228, C975, V 975, Nokia 7600, LG U8138, A1000, E1000, 6680.

Numerous other handsets expected within the next few months.

@ Tahir, www.thelink.com, one of the 3 biggest cellphone chainstores in the UK, has now advertised the Samsung Z500 in their 'coming soon' section, so if the Z500 arrives in SA next month, that will be almost the same time that they will be available here in the UK! Go Samsung SA!!

My friend AndyO tells me he has taken possession of a K600i courtesy of SonyEricsson South Africa. Hopefully I'll get it in my grubby paws soon.

Posted by Mohil
Amawanqa: The Nokia 7600, isn't that the leaf-shaped phone? That's a pretty old model. It can't be a 3G phone. Can it???

@ Mohil,
Yes it is indeed 3G capable, and it is the leaf-shaped/tape-measure-shaped handset. Obviously no video calling facilities. Specs for most modern phones are available at www.gsmarena.com

It was the first Nokia 3G enabled handset available here. It's a bit of a bugger to sms with, though. (Initially, anyway.)Very popular here when they were going very cheap on the UK's dedicated 3G network,3, last October, for a whole whopping £29.99 (!) if you bought £15 top-up with it, on 3's PAYG service called 'Threepay'. This special was through www.carphonewarehouse.com at the time, but with such a ridiculously cheap price, CPW had such a backlog of orders that they took the special off their website within 2 days! People were restricted to buying a maximum of 2 per household...
It gives you the option, under phone settings, then network settings, to select either 'dual mode' (both UMTS and GSM) or only GSM.
Most people I know had them unlocked here and flashed to obtain the hidden menus for manually setting the network settings. Threepay has a relatively good tariff, but many people are put off that the airtime vouchers/top-up is only valid for 30 days, and with a minimum top-up of £15, compared to most other network's minimum £5 top-up, you might as well have gone for a contract...
I have sent two unlocked and flashed 7600's from here to SA, and both are working fine on Vodacom.

Three new 3G-mobiles for the Vodafone range

The Motorola V1050, Samsung Z500 and Sony Ericsson's V600i. I wonder when these mobiles will be available in SA. They're only available in sweden and few other places! They better star getting the mobiles over to SA!

I see no body broke the news here but here it is:ICASA WANTS TO BAN SA CELL NETWORKS TO GIVE CUSTOMERS FREE CELLPHONES ON CONTRACTS.Yes you read correct. And ALL NETWORKS welcomes it.ICASA say customer must pay for phones and must get lower rates. All networks have to respond to ICASA by 6 July 05......WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THIS

LOL@ Tahir... Check a couple of posts back, I posted this news 2 days ago. Icasa contends that the current practice of giving away "free phones" to contract subs pushes up the price of calls and services because somehow these "free phones" have to be subsidised from somewhere. They also want networks to have shorter contracts than the current 24 months.

Posted by Rhino8
That would be gr8. But then some ppl will never get new phones. I would rather go for a free phone and pay more, unless call rates and data rates will drop dramaticaly

Posted by brix25
I also think it's a good move...if you want an expensive phone on a cheap talk package the only thing to do would be to pay for it. In more news it's been confirmed that Cell C and Virgin will be entering into a joint venture details of which should be announced soon. And a final note MTN made about R6 billion in profits...pity they still don't have any GPRS service in Nigeria.

Hulo mense - Brix25 has asked me to report on my adventures with the new Sony Ericsson K600i - arguably the world's smallest pretty 3G cellphone. If you've been checking the stats on the K750i - then minus the 2megapix, the memory card and music play button... add 3G speeds and video calling and you have the K600i. Pretty to look at, pretty to play with and awesome music quality.

Best... radio has RDS with AF... that's like f%&&$@# and call me Martha! Menu system is nicely animated, as is the K750i (yes I have that to) but I find the screen a little bit cramped. The phone I have is way pre-release and has crashed and all that shite. I've become accustomed to the trying nature of beta phones so I tend to look past these.

On 3G - MTN delivered about 40kbits/sec (measured using a WAP speed test site)... while Vodacom battled. I guess that this has to do with where I live. Also my office desk doesn't have Voda3G coverage ... I have to walk to the other side of the MSC/KPMG building on the Foreshore to get a good Voda 3G signal.

Driving about town this morning I noticed that Vodacom has wider 3G coverage than MTN... at least along the Atlantic seaboard. I tried a video call on MTN 3G but failed... also I don't know anyone on MTN with a 3G phone, while I've made a few video calls on Vodacom... compared to Motorola and Samsung, the K600 is substandard (video call only) displaying a very pixelated incoming screen.

I remind you that this is PRE-RELEASE! and I've had camera issues before with SE pre-release phones. I expect that all of this will be addressed when the phone is released in about two months.

Okay... Brix25... I'll keep you posted about my K750i adventures that start as soon as my 512 MStick DUO PRO arrives next week. Ordered one on Digital Planet for a third cheaper than store prices, and a reader at almost half store prices.

:: Brix25... I was gonna offer to pop over to the Cape Times today but I forget that you blokes take Fridays off

:: Cheers :: ed!

Posted by WirelessMonkey
Okay... in defense of the folks in Blue & Green... Vodacom... I just measured their 3G using the same speed test WAP site - 74kbits/sec... on the K600i (pre-release and un-approved)... folks that's definitely a f$$#^^$ and call me Judy.

I've been impressed with my Vodacom 3G experience - tried it on a Motorola E1000, Nokia 6630, Samsung Z130, SE V800 and now the K600i. Folks... it's early days for 3G and one must not forget that 3G is an entirely new UMTS network (same tech as Sentech). It's worth it... and getting it makes your a technology warrior, or as we say in Africa, a techo lion!

Thanks, MonkeyMan! I was worried about all the talk going around about Vodacom's slow data rates. I'm glad you sorted that out. BTW, you didn't perhaps test the data rates on a N6680, did you?

Very nice review mr munkey!!!
