No brix. I stil got my K700i,i use my N-gage 4 Opera browsing n wap

Posted by brix25
Would've loved a java version of Opera for my precious. Seen it working on a 6600 and it blew me away...far better than java browsers currently available. Or perhaps SE can make an affordable Symbian phone in the candybar form factor.

Posted by Rhino8
I would like that

What is happening with the 6630 in South Africa?
Vodashop says Vodacom is never bringing it out.
Mtn shops always say they don't have stock.

Is the Nokia 6630 ever going to come out?

AFAIK the 6630 is out although exclusively on MTN, I've spotted a couple of people around Cape Town with the phone.

MTN SWITCHED ON THERE 3G NETWORK and customers cant make or receive any call via 3G.IF YOU ON MTN 2G network and move on 3G while on a call.YOU CALL WILLDROP.Its only available to MTN VIP clients for now and they are having loads of problems. It will be launched to the public by the 26 June.In KZN DBN MTN GPRS is faster than its Edge network. It does not matter who rolls out MTN 3G network but if you dont know what you are doing you are going to have problems like this........HA HA HA HA HA HA HA.Yello can you hear me..........You are braking up TenTen

Someone needs a spelling lesson.

Considering they haven't officially launched 3G what's the big deal? People would discover they've got 3G by mistake, it would be advisable though not to use the service on your 6630( very few peeople have the phone according to a previous post)...just wait until they launch it officially maybe then you can comment.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@Brix even you need some spelling lesson. You cant spell the word "PEOPLE" in your last post you spelt it has PEEOPLE.Are you sure you are a journalist

Posted by brix25
LOL...I'm taking the mickey out of you and you're getting your knickers in a knot. You're telling us about problems with MTN's 3G when it's still being tested and yet to be launched publicly which is kind of stupid if you get my drift...coz how can you complain about something that's not been launched yet...this has all been through word-of-mouth on forums like these for the past couple of weeks.

Wait until they launch and then you can give us a million-and-one reasons not to go with MTN 3G as I'm expecting you to do.

BTW: Check again, you might want to get perscription for reading glasses...PEOPLE or maybe someone is just being a POEPHOL.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@Brix OK MTN launched Blackberry last year.BUT THEY ONLY HAD STOCK AFTER 1 MONTH WHEN VODACOM HAD IT.Why is MTN keeping so quiet on BB.With Vodacom BB you can send and receive unlimted emails @ a fix price @ R349 and you get 100 anytime minutes.MTN chargers you for sending and receiving email gives you no free minutes @ R368........Thats why they are keeping so quiet.

Posted by brix25
For one... The MTN Blackberry's won't be cluttered with Vodafone live menu's...saw my friend use his last night and it looked like a pain just adding a contact. Sorry to break this 2 you but u ain't got much credibility around here cause you're a zealot who repeats the propaganda fed 2 u by the training guys at Vodacom.

Posted by Rhino8
@tahir.

According to you , vodacom is the best but why is it then that my problem with gprs only got fixed on wednesday, after having problems for weeks. Well now its fixed but i hardly ever get speeds higher than 10kbs, while on MTN i get average speed of 30kbs. And for the last month i been using MTN i never had a single connection problem.

MTN may have problems while setting up, but at least i get what i pay for.

Posted by gcs001
@brix i tested my fone with a voda sim & that worked. i then tested my sim in a motorola v3 & that also worked. looks like i hav 2 take my fone 2 motorola 2 check. seems its the combination my fone & sim.

Posted by RicK700i
This thread sounds like a contest of Vodacom vs MTN or a customer complaint thread.Ive been a loyal Vodacom user since Feb 2003 and i hav no probs with them. Please bring bac free gprs. That Wil save me thousands of Rands.

Posted by brix25
@Rick: If anyone came at me saying if I didn't use a particular 3G I would be doomed, I'll tell him to f-off... Tahir has been quite provocative at times, I understand he owns a Vodacom shop and wants people 2 use this network but sometimes he's been a bit economical with the truth...for instance the limitations placed on branded handsets by the network in order for them 2 increase their revenue which would be fair if people knew about this. And yes I use Vodacom.

Hey i'm new. Umm.... what is the newest topic? BB?

Posted by brix25
Welcome... Right now we're discussing anything worth talking about. It would be good to read up on earlier posts to get an idea of this thread and it's regular posters. BB=Blackberry.

Posted by sIssIs
yep I know what BB is. just asked if it was the topic. well vodacom is really investing into their 3G network. today I started to get a really good signal in Grabouw. Grabouw is "Apple country". Its just up the mountain from Somerset West if you know what I'm talkign about. Do you maybe know if today's 3G(I got a SE V800) mobile support 3.5G thats coming at the end of the year.

Posted by brix25
I don't think current models support HSDPA. Did you get a 3G signal in Grabouw? I know they've got excellent coverage but it would be amazing if they've got a 3G in such a small town.

Posted by mario2002
None of the major companies support 3.5G . I now of only one small venture who have build a few handsets for the eastern markets and trials :-( I espect Nokia to announce at list 1 handset sometimes next year.On the other hand I guess the WIMAX format will be with us in 18moths or so :-) Should that be the case who cares about 3.5 G ? Ipv6 combined with voip+video (fully supported by ipv6 ! ) and one could make a video call from a enabled handset within 50KM of your home pc (connected to internet thru ADSL).Who needs vodacom or mtn or cell c ?

Posted by sIssIs
They will find ways to overcome that. Vodafone isn't stupid. Everything is planned from the beginning.

Posted by Tahir Ally
Vodacom is the 1st cell network in SA to have a wimax licence.............@Brix you always speak about VODAFONES LIMITATIONS.Did you know all 3G phones have DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT(DRM).So what this means what you download on you phone, you cannot transfer it to your friends via BT.For you to transfer it .You have to run it through a DRM software on a pc.Then your friends phone must be connected to your pc for them to get it.ANYTHING THAT DEALS WITH 3G HAS LIMITATIONS because like what you said in your previous post. The networks want to increase their revenues.Another thing about Vodafone live,Vodacom gives its dealers commision for everything a customer buys on that portal. In time to come i fell sorry for companies like exactmobile,35050.They will be doomed or they must supply content to the networks if they want to be in business.............HSDPA WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE TOWARDS THE END OF THE YEAR................HSUPA COMING SOON TOO.

Posted by mario2002
Overcome what ? Today,as you read this, there is a small application for a S60 cellphone, which allows you to place a internet call via bluetooth to any other pc or S60 cell using the application or even a land line anywhere in the world if you care to open a account. Now this application is more of a joke because bluetooth is limited to only 10m or so.Before the end of this year Nokia will bring out a cellphone supporting wifi ! Still not much of a use but at least you can call from around 100m around your pc/laptop.In 2years from now a new standard will be introduced (again nokia) is called wimax and then the cell-voip-internet call will really make sens !

Posted by Tahir Ally
A SA company already has the solution for VOIP on mobile phones. It should be available from the end of this year. All you need is a Java Phone.Thats all

Posted by mario2002
@Tahir What exactly are you talking about when you say 'vodacom has a licence for wimax'?Nokia hasn't even finalised the protocol yet ! They managed to stop others from doing so but the final protocol will be decided by intel/nokia and a few other companies. Even more important a bluetooth, wifi, wimax connection does not need a licence because the chance of connections bumping into each other is minimal.(unlike gsm, umts where frq ordering is needed and therefore licencing)wimax is wifi on steroids. It does frq hopping on grand scale (2-10gig!)at 25khz channel spacing you can accomodate 300000 people in one cell to talk at once till time multiplexing has to kick in! Taking that into account and the fact that no central controler is needed (each cell acts as a router/controler) what for must I pay vodacom for ?

Posted by RicK700i
Hey people .i got a very interesting question 4u to answer (especially Tahir Ally, our 'Vodacom Esato President') My question is,whats the chance in a scale out of 10 will South Africa experience free gprs again like MTNLoaded. o2 had free gprs in the UK

Posted by Tahir Ally
@mario 2002 visit www.myadsl.co.za Look under 3G.LOOK FOR VODACOM BIG BROADBAND BET.It states clearly Vodacom has a licence to test wimax

Posted by mario2002
Yeah, any company will need a licence.Companies do need to have a licence to integrate bluetooth and wifi and just about anything they haven't developed them self. After all the ones they have done the work need to be paid.A end user licence (that's me and you) does not apply. Also I would'nt be surprised if in your country the government will tax the cell companies for every frq they use in which case they may tax the end user too.It remains to be seen how many private users will really pay ! Or do you really think that all the tv users pay their licences every year? It remains to be seen how the autority will sort this one out.

Posted by Rhino8
O2 still got free gprs if you know how to do it

Posted by zani_003
Free gprs ? Hm..... We'll c!

Rock on! Rock hard!

The discussion over the last couple of days in this thread has really been good...especially the debate around WiMax. Free GPRS? I don't it will happen again... Networks are making more money from data usage now then at any time since the introduction of GPRS 30 months ago. If GPRS is too expensive get a BT dongle and transfer massive files to your phone. R2/MB is cheap in any language.

@mario2002,

Telkom have actually been testing Wimax for a couple of months now, and plan to use the technology as a "Last-Mile" solution to replace ADSL in areas where exchanges are either fibre or not financially viable to upgrade to accommodate ADSL. Wimax towers have a working radius of approx. 45km. All Wimax equipment out now is classed as 'Pre-Wimax', as a definite standard & specification has not been laid out by Intel, but this is not far away now. Where they are having problems, is with 'Mobile Wimax', and this directly affects what you have been talking about, but latest news is that the problems should be sorted out sometime in 2006. All Wimax solutions due to be launched in the near future are going to be 'Fixed-Wireless'.

Vodacom is planning on aggressively attacking the broadband internet market in this country, 3G now (mobile), SUPER 3G by December, and Wimax trials starting soon. Remember that Vodacom already has the infrastructure in place, and bear in mind the radius of Wimax towers. Only a small percentage of their towers would need Wimax antennas.

Posted by mario2002
You are right, but I am not interested in the 'fixed line' wimax ! A chip supporting this has already been released by Intel.A month or so back the Intel/Nokia/Motorola alliance managed to veto the final wimax proposal by other big role players in Australia. Now remains to be seen if their proposal will be accepted as a standard. The technology is here already, only the licensing/approval/acceptance needs to be ironed out.No doubt a few more moths of 'fighting' will take place.I personally would like to see the other party's proposal been accepted.Nokia and Intel are already market leaders by far in their fields and now looks like even more is going their way :-(

Interesting bit of info. I have posted here before saying that I have never been able to connect via GPRS here at work.
But now that I have a 'Z800', all is working 100%...
Just another benefit to Z800 firmware over V800's

Posted by brix25
@CodeMaster... I'm confused...you used a 3G phone V800, changed the fw to Z800. Now what's the deal with GPRS reception?

Posted by sIssIs
Z800 is the original name. Well I never had or have a problem with my V800 connecting via GPRS or 3G.

Posted by brix25
On the subject of Vodacom's GPRS... Noticed today that my reception was quite choppy. I'll enquire with the technicians whether they're upgrading their base stations to be capable of 3G.

Posted by RicK700i
Today,I asked a salesman workin at a MTN shop about da cost of MTN's gprs know MTNLoaded and he told me its R2 per MB. Is that tru?

Posted by brix25
@Rick...don't know where you've been the last couple of months but all the networks have been charging R2/MB for out of bundle usage.

Posted by Aalpha001
MTN South Africa charges R2/MB for their GPRS service. Does anyone know how much they charge for EDGE?

There is no information about EDGE on their website. I need the info badly.

Posted by brix25
AFAIK MTN chargers R2/MB for all data whether it be GPRS, EDGE or 3G. You should note though your usage will vary accordingly depending on which system you use. If you're using EDGE and visit streaming sites you'll end up with a massive headache when it comes time to say your bill.

Posted by mario2002
Yeah,Brix is right.I don't know about 3G but EDGE I've tested it myself here in Jeffreys Bay ,Eastern Cape on a borrowed :-( 6630 bluetooth linked to my Fujitsu-Siemens laptop while sitting in a coffe shop. The speed is about 200kbps down and 100up.And the price is identical to GPRS.Some of the young tourists (they are quite a few in Jeffreys) asked me where can they pay to register on the 'hot spot' thinking I am on a wifi connection :-) Just as a jocke send one to the cashier. The following confusion was quite funny to watch :-))

Posted by brix25
@mario: Would've loved seeing some yuppies asking you about the location of the "hotspot".

Posted by CodeMaster
@Brix25
I don't know what the deal is with GPRS, all I know is that my V800 would NEVER connect here at work, and neither would my T68i...
It just seemed coincidence that as soon as I upgraded my firmware to Z800, then everything works fine.
If I still had my T68i, then I would test that, maybe they have just been working on the towers, but then again, my phones have always shown that I have GPRS signal, they just never connected.

Posted by brix25
Coincidentaly, Yesterday I started experiencing the same problem with my K700i. It shows the blue GPRS triangle but won't connect. It's on and off though. My only guess is that they're upgrading the towers for 3G.

Posted by JK
it cud be that your settings were wrong before the fw upgrade??

Posted by CodeMaster
@786KBR

Not possible, It is the settings that were sent to my phone, and the settings were double checked with Vodacom Techies on more than a few occasions...

Posted by brix25
Also doubt it could've been the settings with the V800.

Posted by sIssIs
Maybe you're just bad luck. I even accesed Vodafone Live! in sutherland. Yes Vodabom is updating and upgrading stuff, called voda because my mom had problems connecting.

Posted by CodeMaster
Signal here has always been crappy. We are in an industrial area, in the middle of nowhere. Sometime I get signal from towers that are 20-30km away. But things seen to be better now, he only Vodacom would upgrade the towers to 3G

Posted by zani_003
I have a strong feeling that Mtn is gonna rock with its 3G and EDGE networks. Vodacom may have to start worryin a bit more! Also thinkin of goin bak to Mtn, been wit them from 98 to apr 05 ! I also read about da new SE V600i 3G phone wit bluetooth only problem its 4 vodafone and only has 32Mb! Smartphone or 3G mobile?
