Hey Branimer (cool name by the way)
There are four networks to choose from but with what you going to be needing I would go for either Vodacom or MTN (good coverage with EDGE/3G and 3.5G/HSDPA country wide)
Here is a pricelist of Vodacoms Data Bundles if you interested.Just do a currency conversion with our South African Rand (ZAR) and see what that translates to for you. (By the way Wangs,give me a comparison of the data bundle prices you get over there in the UK with what I've got below.)
MyMeg150mb=R119.00 (0.79c/mb)
MyMeg250mb=R160.00 (0.64c/mb)
MyMeg500mb=R189.00 (0.38c/mb)
MyMeg1GB=R289.00 (0.28c/mb)
About the Tom Tom software and maps for South Africa Im afraid I can't give you a answer on that one but I'm sure someone here will help you out with an answer.
By the way,what phone do you have? Im always curious

We are the grade8's mentors after all, so why not respect?
So after getting my haircut went to Cedar Square to join some friends for lunch in Ciaou Baby or whatever they call that restaurant, one of them got a HTC S710 two days ago, and he hates it, he had a Nokia N90 before. Must say the S710 aint exactly the fastest phone around, its worse than the TyTN i had used during the holidays, still think S710 is a sweet phone though,its just letdown by the lil TI OMAP-850 200mhz CPU, for anyone thinking of getting i'd say rather wait till the S730 gets here.

@ Hobbster:
There are 3 fave themes that I alternate between.
I usually use the first one, called 'Transgreen', which I downloaded from Zedge. I chose it to suit my new bike's main colour (which I diiig) and flowing lines, which I uploaded and selected as the wallpaper for this particular theme.
Next is 'Smoke-Abstract', really keeewwl but not the easiest to read from.
Really dig this one, entitled 'Organica':
As regards MB rates/prices from the UK networks: Prices for data usage used to be astronomical here, but they're dropping significantly, possibly due to the wonders of wi-fi etc. They used to be around £3-£4 a meg, a year or two ago!!
Orange charge £2 for unlimited use per day, Vodafone charge £1 for the first 15 megs, then £2 (approx R28) a meg (!) thereafter! However, T-Mobile now give you unlimited data for £7.50 a month (approx R105). O2 dropped their data rates recently too. Not sure what their new tariffs are; will check later.
@ branimir:
Dobry vecer.
I have a spare, unused Vodacom PAYG simcard lying around somewhere. If I find it later, I'll PM you to get a postal address. If you want it, I'll send it to you in Slovakia during this week. Then you could give friends, family and colleagues your mobile SA number before you leave. Don't worry about payment; it cost me next to nothing and a few £'s to post it from the UK to Slovakia won't cause me to starve.
Vodacom is the biggest cellphone network in SA and generally has the best coverage.

Branimir, i agree that Vodacom would probably be your best bet, mate. I'd also post some simcards to you, but they would probably reach Slovakia after you'd arrived in South Africa.
Jojo, yes indeed mate, the temperatures do reach the high thirties here now and then during the summer months, and the heat becomes oppressive when the humidity climbs into the high 80s and above. Thank goodness for airconditioning, the ocean and swimming pools

heh, dobry vecer
thanks for an offer. I'm omming to SA on 1st of feb, it will be better if you can send it to hotel where I'll be next 3 weeks, it is Protea hotel in Richards bay, I'm sending you detailsi PM, one more, Thank you
Posted by amawanqa
@ Branimir:
Ahoj.
I can easily send the simcard to that Protea Hotel in Richard's Bay, but the postal service in SA is not 100% reliable, i.e. I cannot guarantee it will arrive at its intended destination...
Also, there may not be much point sending one from here to SA, as all you would have to do then is ask the hotel staff where the nearest superstores are that sell cellphone simcard packs, like Pick n' Pay, Clicks, etc. and you'll be able to buy one for only a few Rands!
I'm sure the other guys can confirm those bundles for PAYG. Also, I know this may be very obvious, but just make sure the 6120 is unlocked to accept one of the SA sims. SA uses the same frequency bands as Europe.

@ Branimir,
Wow, some stunning SA wildlife pics on your Opera blog!
Nice close-up of a 'kudu' too. So easy to identify with those spiraling horns.
I hope that you have another amazing trip to SA.
Just be aware that there are currently frequent power cuts (electricity), due to too much demand and not enough power stations able to cope with the demand. I guess not too much of a problem if you're going to be out amongst wildlife most of the time, but just to take that into account as well...

well I know about this power cuts.... it is something unbelievable.... the paper mill I work for has no power for 10 hours of day

Eish, quiet around here today. Where's everybody?
Anywayz, doom n' gloom article about huge Motorola losses, care of www.theregister.co.uk :
'Moto phones in a billion dollar loss Woes continue
Despite a new CEO, there are no signs yet of a turnaround for Motorola. The company's mobile phone division recorded a shocking quarter, with the unit's revenues down 38 per cent year-on-year, losing $388m along the way. Motorola's mobile division recorded a $1.2bn loss in 2007.
The mobile phone business netted $4.8bn, shifting 40.9 million handsets. For the full year, mobile revenues were down 33 per cent to $19bn.
Overall, the company made a Razr-slim profit of $51m for the final quarter of calender year 2007, on net sales of $9.6bn, down from $623m net income and $11.79bn revenue a year ago.
Performance was helped by Home and Networks earning $192m net income on revenue of $2.7bn - with greater sales but lower profits than a year ago. The enterprise mobility division, buoyed by the acquisition of the Symbol business, rose to $2.1bn sales and $451m net income.
The company spent $557m in the quarter buying back its own shares. Motorola said it expects the grim news to continue, with a loss projected for Q1 2008.'

Wanqa, i got my very first admin period after 10year stint of slogging it out from 8am to 3pm! We're running on a 10-day cycle this year. So The Dark Side's relentless forces continue to expand (care of www.theregister.co.uk) :
'Nokia grabs 40% of phone market for first time
Apple's iPhone may have been the most talked-about handset during the final quarter of 2007, but its sales were dwarfed by the majors in a period that saw Nokia grab more than 40 per cent of the global market, the first time it's done so.
According to market watcher Strategy Analytics, Apple shifted 2.3m iPhones worldwide during Q4 2007. That's just ten per cent of the 23.7m handsets fifth-placed LG sold in the period. Sony Ericsson managed 30.8m units, Motorola 40.9m and Samsung 46.4m phones. Nokia sold a staggering 133.5m mobiles.
That left the Finnish phone giant with a 40.2 per cent market share, the highest in its history. Samsung took 14 per cent, Motorola 12.3 per cent, Sony Ericsson 9.3 per cent and LG 7.1 per cent.
Apple took 0.6 per cent, which isn't bad for a company that has been in the business for less than a year. But it does show the mountain the Mac maker has to climb to start matching its competitors' sales. SA highlighted the high price of the iPhone as one of the barriers to growth.
Still, some purveyors of lower-cost mobiles had problems too. Sony Ericsson, for instance, saw its annual growth rate drop from 64 per cent to just 18 per cent in less than nine months, thanks in part to better branding from its rivals. It's going to need some better branding this year, SA said – time at last for Vaio and PlayStation Portable phones?
Perennial rivals Samsung and Motorola saw year-on-year shipments jump 41 per cent and plunge 37.8 per cent, respectively. Motorola really needs to release some better handsets this year, SA said.
Overall, 332m mobile phones shipped in Q4 2007, up 13 per cent on the same period in 2006. Some 1.13bn shipped in the year as a whole, 12.4 per cent more than shipped in 2006. SA said it expects shipments to hit 1.24bn this year.'

I was in traffic this morning when i spotted a guy on a bicycle. He had somehow hooked up a dynamo to his bike's flywheel, and was using it to charge the phone strapped to his handlebars! I tried to get a pic but the lights had changed. Will keep an eye out for him.
Bran, i posted off a package yesterday. The assistant at the Post Office gave me the assurance that it would be in Richard's Bay by Thursday, although to be honest, the assurance of the Post Office isn't exactly awe-inspiring. They tend to make lofty promises which are often unfulfilled. We'll keep our fingers crossed all the same, mate.
