Up the Hammers!
Well done, West Ham! Back in the Premiership after 2 difficult years in the Coca-Cola Championship. The whole of East London here, home to West Ham's Upton Park stadium, seems to be going ballistic..cars hooting, people in the streets around Green Street and The Boleyn...gr8!
The much-needed cash incentive from the Premiership should get rid of most of the debts. About time.

Anyway, back to the cellphone stuff...the once-hideously expensive Blokia 8910i's are going for around £160 on eBay, in as-new/factory recondtioned condition. There's 12 currently available from 1 of the suppliers.
Very, very classy IMO, titanium housing, 'up-periscope' mechanism etc. OK, it's very low on modern specs, it has the old 4096 colour screen, no camera, etc., but at least it has Bluetooth..(wow..)
Still, I think it's a really suave piece of kit. At the price above, it's almost tempting...
The 8800 doesn't float my boat in the same way, I prefer the 8910i's more angular lines than the contemporary 8800's more rounded appearance.

Good news for techies... MTN's 3G'ello signal is beaming across several locations in the Cape Town CBD according to my friend AndyO.

Posted by mario2002
Is it 3G only ? I thought MTN will launch the 3.5G in june :-( however their EDGE is lighting fast in PE . I and a close friend tested it on a 6630 (btw nice cell!) and won over the vodacoms 3G hands down. Also is not as sensitive to the tower distance as 3g is :-)

Posted by brix25
According to AndyO who tested the trial service on a Samsung SGH-Z130 the signal is relatively better then Vodacom's because they're using several base stations which overlap eachother.

Posted by Rhino8
But i heard that ericsson is MTN partner, so its obvious that it would be good

Posted by brix25
Yep, Ericsson is MTN's partner in rolling out 3G.

Posted by Tahir Ally
Any 3G network has to start with normal speeds @ 384kbps and than upgrade to HSDPA.Look at any other broadband technolgy at 1st it will be at a std speed and than upgrades to a higher speed. The main difference with 3G compared to other broadband tech.3G upgrades are all software driven and other broadband tech you need new hardware...............Samsung is tendering for Cell C 3G network.I dont know when Cell C will have 3G

Posted by brix25
When it comes to network equipment Ericsson have one of the best reputations around. Problem for MTN will be getting content to create a demand for the speeds offered by 3G...hope they don't charge ridiculous prices for downloads like Vodafone Live.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@ Brix i do agree ERICSSON are leaders in network equipment.Vodafone made the 1st 3g call in the world using ERICSSON.....I just want to get 1 thing straight with you and it seems it cant get in your head.VODAFONE LIVE DOES NOT CHARGE FOR BROWSING OR DOWNLOADS ON THEIR SITE.VODAFONE LIVE ONLY CHARGES FOR CONTENT AND NOT DOWNLOAD.Everyone else charge for both

Posted by brix25
It's all just semantics bcoz they charge way more for downloading mp3's then what iTunes chargers for tracks.

Posted by Tahir Ally
If you compare the Vodafone Live content prices with MTN loaded its about the same prices but we dont charge for the download cost thats the main difference.Did you know on the Vodafone live content you can buy bundles. It only becomes expensive if you buy outside bundles.Recently there was a new track that was lauched on the LIVE content that was not available in any shops.

Posted by mario2002
Tahir - IMHO You haven't really answered Brix's comment :-(

Posted by brix25
I think next month I'll get myself a cheap (probably a Samsung) 3G cellphone just to see what all this fuss is about. Can't wait to use streaming media and make video calls.

Posted by Rhino8
Neither can i, but will wait for the v800 to drop in price. Can get it for 4000 at vodashop, or 1500 on family top up. Will wait a little longer. Prices can only drop.

Posted by JK
@brix - i think the moto is the cheapest...

@rhino - i think its free on weekend...

BTW voda getting the 6680, UNBRANDED mr brix.... branded ones avail in july...

Posted by brix25
Browsed around at used cellphone dealerships around town for a cheap 3G phone and the cheapest one I could get was a branded(3 Network) Moto for R2500.

Posted by uthetha ituvi
@ brix,
What Motorola? The cheapest 3G Motorola in the UK is the C975, with no Bluetooth or IR, only USB. You can get them NEW and unlocked (also ex-3 network)for around £60...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBay[....]ory=67924&item=6400828998&rd=1
Or was it the E1000, which can be bought for around £160 BRAND NEW and unlocked here? Come on, SA!
I get so p'd off when I see ridiculous prices for phones back home, particularly if they aren't even new!
I know we've mentioned reasons for price differences between the countries before, but these factors don't appease my suspicions about ripping-off going on. Take the exchange rate, take import duties etc. and I still question some of the pricing of higher end handsets(which the C975 certainly isn't, if that is the moto you saw)...IMO.
Again, don't get me wrong, more than anything I want to see average SA citizens being able to access 3G and the joys of modern cellphone technology, not the reserve for the upper echelon of the (seemingly increasing) 'Great Divide'.

The prices here are the same in the uk..'

eg; after 3 months of release date the k700's were the same!!!

AFAIK- brix did u honestly bought ur k700 from clicks??????

@786KBR,
go on, prove it, by providing links if you can, for sim-free OR PAYG handsets, then I'll take your word and apologise for getting my facts wrong.
Up for a challenge?
Here's two to get you started:
£124.99 for a k700i on PAYG.
http://www.mobiledealer.co.uk[....]rKeywords=&SearchFor=&PT_ID=76
Or...
a SIM-FREE Nokia 6230i for £199.95 from www.mobilefun.co.uk.
Here's another link to prove my statement:
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/5865.htm
As I've mentioned before, it's the higher spec handsets that I'm quoting...
No one's getting ripped off and the prices are the same as UK? LMAO!
Good luck.
PS: I actually DO hope you prove me wrong, it might restore some faith of mine regarding SA cellphone pricing...

Posted by brix25
@786KBR: You'd be suprised at the good deals you'll find at Clicks...all the other shops(including official cellphone shops) were asking me in excess of R2700 for the phone. Coincidentaly I also bought my T300 from Clicks for a ridiculous price...can't recall exactly.

Yep, this is the same phone I saw in the shop.

More evidence of South African consumers being ripped off.

The V800 price will be the same until 6th July. The price did drop about R300 but went up on contracts. This is the fastest selling SonyEricsson for Vodacom.I dont see prices coming down if theirs a HIGH DEMAND

Posted by brix25
Just checkced out this http://www.mobile-review.com/review/sonyericsson-k750-en.shtml on the K750 and as expected it's nothing to get excited about even though I'll probably be getting test model when the phone hopefully launches sometime next month.

078 numbers now available to MTN customers

@Tahir: Saw that on the myadsl message board.

Ok to start of the UK has more independent dealers and other outlets which sell phones on a competition basis... allowing cheaper and better offers on branded and unbranded handsets!!

we only have around 6!!! my statement was based on cost prices which isnt available to the public unfortunately.... SPs try and sell more contracts coz they are rewarded more. when they sell a phone alone they actually losing money so tend to sell the phone at a higher price.

but in terms of phone pricing, its very similar.... if their were more independent dealers here phone pricing will definately decrease!!!

I notice phone pricing all over and yes the k700 price is actually cheaper here than it is there!!! (if the rand is still at R12 to the pound)
im not giving cost pricing away.....

hope i provided sum justification..... but i know what i know and yes im right!!!! even to go as far as saying we could sell phone cheaper than the UK.... if we had the same infrastructure as them...

I do however see that hapening here as phones are outdated in like 9 months and people want to upgrade every year.... so if the phones were relatively cheap they wud just buy it and after a year upgrade again.... but thats not for me to decide

but i guess u right they are getting ripped of here... but only cos theres no competition!!!! :)

and only by a couple 100 rand...

@786KBR, the whole debate is on the prices the public pays..who said anything about the cost prices which are unavailable to the general public?

you've just provided some very DOGMATIC ramblings...back up your arguments with more factual content and links and then you might be a tad more convincing.

@786KBR,
Prices and facts?

As I mentioned in my previous post, I'll be glad if you prove me wrong, with facts.
Regarding independent dealers in the UK...OK, if you want me to start quoting prices from the 3 biggest cellphone chainstores here as further proof, no problem.
Here's just one of the three..have a good look at the prices, particularly the PAYG offers at the bottom of the page.

Need more links and info? Just let me know.

maybe you right... we are a 3rd world country if u 4got.

not in the mood for researching crap that doesnt really bother me or prove anything to u...
u can carry on being pissed of at whats happening in our warm beautiful country...

I still stand with what i said earlier...

and brix i seriously doubt clicks had the best deal..... at anytime...

Posted by brix25
@786KBR: Clicks gave the best deal on this particular phone. Vodashop and MTN were would've ripped me off if I bought the phone PAYG. Their prime focus is still on people who sign 2 year contracts... the crappy phones are offered to the PAYG segment of the market. When you go into these shops saying you want 2 buy a phone they look at you funny.

@786KBR,
Thanks, I will be, because MOST people in our warm beautiful country battle enough financially as it is,without some of the excessive cellphone pricing compounding things.

Heres something everyones being waiting for:SonyEricsson V800 Free on Weekender everyday as of the 7th June 05........Nokia 6680 Free on Talk 500/100.Stock on the 6680 will be available from mid June and NOT BRANDED.BRANDED HANDSETS AVAILABLE @ the end of JULY

Posted by brix25
Lol...Like anyone will be waiting for the branded handsets.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@Brix I have told a few customers about the none branded 6680 handset. Most of them told me they rather wait until Vodafone 6680 arive.I even told them buy the 6680 and flash it in a month time with Vodafone sw @ Vodacare for FREE.They still said WE WILL WAIT.............Brix most Vodashops are selling more branded handsets than the none branded.Vodafone live is doing well.........What are you going to do when all networks brand there phones. If you flash it to the original sw the networks can not help you on MMS/GPRS settings. You will say i will put them in manualy. What if you have a problem. All cellphone stores hate when customers walk in and ASK CAN YOU PLEASE LOAD MY MMS/GPRS SETTING or activate my card for GPRS.When you buy a VODAFONE LIVE HANDSET all what i mention is done automaticaly..........ITS LIKE PLUG AND PLAY

Hi. I'm hoping this is a good place to ask my question. I'm in Boston, USA. My daughter is off to Capetown for a year real soon now. A friend visiting in SA last week bought her a prepaid starter kit. It says "Super 6 4U Starter Pack" on it. It appears that when the plane lands she can stick this in her unlocked GSM phone, dial 100, and she might be good to go. Except I suspect this starter kit doesn't include any prepaid time. I also suspect that this is a Johanesburg number (076 XXX XXXX).

It looks like you folks are experts and you call can give me light tap with the clue stick.

thanks ! - ben

Hi Ben...Super 6 basically means she'll have 6 months access to the Vodacom network. I speak under correction but think it comes with R29 airtime loaded-not much but should get her started. The 076 prefix is Vodacom's latest- not a Joburg number. Hope your daughter enjoys UCT.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@bhyde 076 phone numbers belong to Vodacom SA.When you dial 100 you can receive unlimited calls for the next 6 months. When you load you 1st airtime on your super 6 pack ,it will, give you 10 FREE LOCAL SMS once of only. The airtime values you can buy are R29,R55,R110,R275 and R1000 which gives you R1100 credit.Recently a SMS airtime was launched which cost R49 and it gives you 150 local sms.......For infomation on any Vodacom products visit www.vodacom.net or ask any question here and i will reply

Posted by uthetha ituvi
Hi Ben,
just to double-check:
Is her unlocked GSM phone a tri-band or quad-band cellphone? If it is, there should be no problem.
If you are unsure, the specs for her phone will more than likely be available to check at www.gsmarena.com.
As the US uses the following dual band GSM frequencies,GSM 850 and GSM 1900, it will be different to SA's dual band GSM 900 and 1800.
Tri-band is (usually) GSM 900, GSM 1800 and GSM 1900, and quad band (like on a few Motorolas etc.) has all 4 GSM frequencies, as the quad prefix implies.

Posted by bhyde
Uthetha - Thanks for the reminder about the GSM bands; pretty sure we are ok, but will double check.

Anybody know, assuming I'm right, and there aren't any minutes in this kit - can I buy some recharge minutes on the net some place?

- ben

Posted by Tahir Ally
@ Ben you are correct. The Super 6 pack does not come with any airtime.I dont know any sites from where you can buy airtime. But you can buy airtime at the airports from VODASHOP

What is happening with the 6630 in South Africa?
Vodashop says Vodacom is never bringing it out.
Mtn shops always say they don't have stock.

Is the Nokia 6630 ever going to come out?
