@tahir

Whats the range and limit of the 1 3G "tower" in bloem, coz my phone shows 3g enabled at home. And at work, which is bout 10k s away. I live bout a k away fRom the only 3G tower i know of

Posted by Tahir Ally
@Rhino 8 A 3G NODE B transmits between 3-5KM only.If your 2G phone display 3G ENABLED it means the tower you picking up a signal from has a 3G transmitter.Remember a 2g network can transmit up to 35km.If your 2g signal is very strong at home or at work and displays 3G ENABLED it means you have 3G coverage.I will find out how many active 3G sites Vodacom have in Bloem.I know they had 1 in phase 1 roll out and the network radio planners did tell me that alot of people are buying 3G products in Bloem.

Posted by brix25
@celltech: Gave Vodacom customer care a call this evening and they said streaming wasn't supported over GPRS...so even though the K700 has streaming capability the it's unsupported:-(.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@Brix you should have just taken my advice when i told you streaming is only possible on 3G with Vodacom. The only reason Mr Branson has streaming on his virtual Virgin network is because he is not rolling out 3G

Posted by brix25
@Tahir: I take your "advice" with a pinch of salt knowing that you're only interest is advertising Vodacom.

Audio streaming is possible over GPRS but Vodacom have decided to disable the feature on their network. Even video streaming is possible if you're prepared for some of the worst possible pictures.

When I told the call centre agent that I wanted to listen to live radio over GPRS she was under the impression that I was reffering to the built-in radio on my precious but she was soon straightened out by the guys who deal with data.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@Brix always dial 082155 for data support and not 082111

Posted by Tahir Ally
@ Brix if you had more than a pinch of salt of BRAINS you should have known all three networks dont stream anything on GPRS

Posted by brix25
Oh, seems like I hit a raw nerve there.

Posted by Rhino8
@ tahir

Why aRe you always gettin worked up for nothing? We are suppose to discuss things on this forum, not fight about everything. This forum is turning into a battle bout who is the best operator in sa, everybody knows thats voda. True i use MTN coz they give me better speed on gprs, i will always use whichever networks gives me the best service on the products i wanna use.

I want a 3G smartphone, seems that my only option is blokia, any ideas?

Posted by JK
....by the way my data speed on voda is faster than mtn now.. about 3.5 sec.... timed it!!

rhino there was only one tower and i think there still is... near the prison somewhere.... actually the fastest streamin is at the prison!!!

brix leave the call centre people.... they are there to assist the masses the not so clued up people..... coz sum people still dont know whats sms!!!

so thats their job really.

Posted by brix25
Quite ironic that the fastest streaming is at the prison...LOL.

Man is it just me but dont you guyz get friggin frustrated with waiting for phones and complete idiots @ customer service???? Waiting for this damn Nokia 6680 is testing my patience... I've phoned Autopage, Vodacom and Nokia they all say sorry the phone is in the testing phase - yes i friggin know!!! hehe O man crazyeee stuff! Well its the middle of May and still waiting... yes we sign 24 month contracts but ure new cellphone is cool for about a couple of months, so u end up waiting for a year for a new phone and then.... you end up waiting a couple months more! (laughs) i hate waiting! Hey if any1 has anymore news on the release gimme a holler.

Posted by JK
Are ull making up people???????

Posted by JK
not sure bout the 6680, havent seen it but know a few people who are selling a 6630!!! any 1 interested???

Posted by brix25
Good to see another new member of the family. 6630 is available coz Nokia has been advertising it in newspapers. It's also got EDGE so it should be available on MTN.

Posted by JK
Doesnt mean coz it got edge that it will be available on mtn.... the 6230 also got edge!!

i wonder y nokia is advertising it if voda isnt getting it and mtn doesnt have it yet and might not have it for another 3-4 months???? a waste i think!

Posted by CodeMaster
Hmmmm, unless Blokia knows something we don't....

Posted by JK
like they gona start their own network!!!!!

like what.....

Posted by brix25
Yeah, Blokia might be up to something coz the phone has been advertised for the past month in newspapers and on television.

Posted by JK
cant think of anything.....

Posted by Tahir Ally
We all know Nokia is advertising the 6630 but only MTN has it.Vodacom is not keeping it and its making it better for the handset manufacturers who have 3G handsets. It makes Nokia looks like backwards but just wait for the 6680 to arrive.Nokia 6680 is going to fly out the shelves faster than it came in.I got over 15 customers waiting for 6680

Posted by celltech
@Brix, streaming is possible with MTN GPRS because I use it everyday, maybe Voda don't support it........

@ Brix, cool, did you know, MTN International opens office in Iran

MTN International (Mauritius) Limited is proud to announce that today (Tuesday, 26 April) its office in Iran was officially opened by the Ambassador Y Saloojee, the South African envoy in the Islamic Republic of Iran, at a function held at the SA Embassy.

The MTN office is based in Tehran the economic hub of Iran and has been established by Mr Chris Kilowan, the former chief executive officer of Orbicom, one of the MTN Group’s subsidiaries. The office has been established to support the Group’s ongoing expansion efforts.

Opening an office in Iran will uniquely position MTN to identify value-enhancing expansion opportunities in line with the Group's vision to be a leader in telecommunications in developing markets. MTN’s recently launched slogan, “MTN, everywhere you go”, further highlights the Group’s commitment to expanding its reach outside of Africa.

Says Kilowan: “We are honoured and pleased to have established an office in Iran. This move is indicative of MTN’s commitment to do business in this country and our confidence in this market.

”We are grateful for the support of the South African Embassy and His Excellency, Ambassador Y Saloojee. We believe our partnership is an important one and we are committed to supporting the initiatives of the Bi-national Commission between South Africa and Iran.”

The opening of the MTN office coincides with South Africa Week, which culminates in South African Freedom Day celebrations (27 April) promoted by the Embassy.

Since MTN set up office in Iran, the company has participated in key telecommunications events in the country such as the 2004 Telecommunications Exhibition in Tehran.

Soon after inception, the MTN Group actively sought growth opportunities, becoming the first South African mobile network operator to expand its operations to Uganda, Rwanda and Swaziland in 1997 and 1998.

In 1994 MTN efficiently rolled out one of the world’s largest GSM networks and to date has invested R17 billion in infrastructure to effectively deliver communication solutions in its six operations (Cameroon, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland and Uganda). As at 31 December 2004 the Group recorded more than 13 million subscribers across its networks.

As South Africa celebrates Freedom Day, the MTN Group celebrates another milestone this year -10 years of listing on the JSE Securities Exchange, with the financial resources to allow it to continue investing in new technologies and new markets. The Group’s positive share performance over a decade has contributed to the company’s status as a pre-eminent provider of communications services and solutions.

@celltech: They'll be applying for a licence to operate a network in the Islamic Republic. Unrelated but Vodafone will soon launch Passport which will make calls while roaming on participating much cheaper to their subscribers but only in certain markets, definitetly not in SA.

Posted by Tahir Ally
Passport was launched today Mr Brix and it will be available to all Vodafone partner networks.Currently its only available for UK and Swedish markets.Passport will be launched on Vodacom.......This is the power of Vodafone.Welcome to the worlds largest mobile community Vodacom and Vodafone its about time. After the Vodacom Vodafone alliance was made any Vodacom customer roaming can phone SA the way they do in SA.NO INTERNATIONAL CODES TO ENTER,ETC.........Visit www.vodafone.com and click on media centre for all vodafones news.........In other news Vodacom is going to operate in Nigeria. They are going to take over Vmobile. This deal will be finalised next week.Vodacom is going to roll out 3G in all its operations

Guy's test your bandwith (speedtest) @ http://www.toast.net/performance/

Posted by Tahir Ally
Vodacom is also thinking of going in partnership with Telkom to buy Nigeria fixed line operator.Vodacom is going to buy Vmobile which is Nigerias most profitable cell network. The Vmobile deal will be finalised soon

Posted by brix25
There'll be some issues with anti-trust regulators because Nitel(fixed line operator) already owns a mobile network(M-Tel)...V-Mobile if what can be believed from reports is more profitable and it better shape then M-Tel.

Posted by Rhino8
This is f****** bull s***. Am sick and tire of this vodashit. Cant connect, if you do get an connection its slower than a hundred year old snail on his sunday afternoon drive.

Posted by zani_003
Hmm... Sorry 2 hear dat m8, r u usin vodacom or vodafone ? Im on vodafone and its quite fast. Vodacom settings used to give me a hard time!

Posted by mario2002
My vodacom GPRS is just fine (for a gprs connection) off course if one compares it to MTN's lightning fast EDGE then its as a snail indeed. But then you always can move to a big city and buy a 3g handset and the speeds are comparable.(If you intend moving to PE just make sure you are close/within a few km of the tower).Greetings from Jeffreysbay.Mario :-)

Posted by zani_003
Mtn has launched EDGE ? Boy i have been out 4 ages ! What else is new ? Dats y my friend's mobile displayed "yello broadband"

@bradboy: Does Vodafone have different GPRS settings to that of Vodacom?A colleague I met last night was apparently trialing MTN's new 3G data card on his laptop before they started rolling out the service next month.

Hi Rhino

MTN has GPRS+ which reaches speeds of up to 80kbs, if you have GPRS automatically you pick up GPRS+ at certain base stations.

Posted by brix25
ROLMAO@Rhino... That's the best imitation of Tahir I've seen aroun here.

Posted by JK
MMMM gona be amtn voda war????

now that mtn has 3g!!

Posted by Rhino8
Difference is, im not trying to shove anything down your throats.

Anyone wants a wapsite you can use to send sms from?

Posted by brix25
Vodacom are planning to give away computers and other equipment to get more people onto 3G. They also announced that HSPDA would be launched early next year, a move which will compete directly with Telkom's ADSL offering.

Posted by Tahir Ally
Brix stop posting old news which i posted 2 months ago but HSDPA will be launched this year.Maybe MTN might launch HSDPA next year....
