@ Brix when you download stuff from Vodafone LIVE if it tells you MP3 it is an full MP3 tone. The problem with you is you have not used or own a LIVE! handset yet

Posted by brix25
@Tahir:Never mentioned Vodafone Live in my previous post...they should pay you for the free publicity you've given them the last couple of months. I'm trying to access the much vaunted Vodafone Live portal from my phone. It should not be a problem as I'm on Vodacom... I'm not buying a branded handset to access the site.

Posted by Tahir Ally
The only difference is if you had Vodafone Live handset.Your browsing is FREE.Remember if you dont have a 3G handset with 3G coverage you will not see the 3G stuff

Posted by brix25
So there's no way of accessing the wap site unless I've got a Vodafone branded phone... Brilliant idea...more reasons to just love them.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@ Brix visit www.live.vodafone.com to view Vodafone Live SA portal.Remember you will not get the 3g menus if you are not using a VodafoneLive 3G phone or if you dont have 3G coverage

Posted by brix25
I can't get the particular site on my phone...just shows me the address at the top, nothing else.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@Brix just enter the address like this live.vodafone.com .It works

Posted by Rhino8
Hey mr vodacom. You are making a big issue of nothing. On MTN i have at least 5times faster gprs than on voda, i dont give a flying f*ck why, and im not complaining. MTN may be slow, but at least they are fast. PmPl.

Posted by brix25
LOL@Rhino.

Posted by OluYom
@Brix and all: You guys seem to be having a whole lot of fun on data here.

I hate branded handsets and cannot imagine why anyone's access to content should depend on whether or not they have a branded handset

Posted by Tahir Ally
@RHINO8.The reason Vodacom GPRS is slow because we have more customers than other 2 networks combined.Thats where 3G comes in the pictures.GPRS and EDGE speeds is affected when people make, receive a call,SMS.GPRS,EDGE and voice calls uses the same time slots thats why you will get slow connections.3G has unlimted capacity. If you want me to explain how 3G works....I think i did mention on this forum how it works. If you dont know how GSM AND UMTS works. All i can say is KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT

Posted by brix25
@Tahir: Cmon don't ask anyone to shut up even if I don't like what you say most of the time I won't ask you to shut up.

Posted by uthetha ituvi
You shall all bow down and worship the mighty Vodacom 3G!
World domination! Zero choice!
The streets will flow with the blood of the Vodacom 3G unbelievers!!
BELIEVE or face the wrath of my mighty stylus!!!
Adolf Hitl.. er Ally.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@Brix I am not vulgar like Rhino8.I am sorry if i hurt your feelings

Posted by Rhino8
Hey open your eyes and read mr high and mighty vodacom.... I told you i dont give a flying shite why, MTN is giving me mo probs and faster service, ill use that. Since voda started rolling out 3G they just stopped caring bout other users. Now you dont need to explain anything to me, i know how 3G and 2G nets work, and i know the diff. You think you know more than anyone. I got news for you, there are other ppl that know this stuff, we just dont make such a big deal bout it.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@Rhino8 What do you mean by saying after Vodacom started rolling out 3G they dont care about other users

Posted by brix25
@Tahir... You couldn't possibly hurt my feelings...only a woman could. @uthetha: I hear you mfowethu, people buying branded phones don't know that they're limiting their options ...the phones might be cheap but there's a definite catch.@Rhino: Don't blow a gasket, it's not worth it.

Posted by Rhino8
@ brix, i know.

@ tahir, since they started with 3G, i started getting problems. Delayed sms, sometimes the sms never gets delivered neva had this prob before 3G, if you wanna make a call it says network busy and that keeps on for hours, voda may be the best network around but at this moment they are not doing much good.

I only use the best i can get at da best price i get. And thats not voda at the moment.

Posted by Tahir Ally
Mr HOT SHOT RHINO 8 in your previous post you said you know how GSM and UMTS networks work.....Well if you know how they work.I dont think so because now you are complaining after Vodacom launched 3G you got problems with sending SMS and making calls......If you did not know 3G traffic does not go through 2G.

Posted by Rhino8
What i am saying, is that once 3G started they stopped caring bout the 2g network. I never had constant problems like this. It doesnt really have anything to do with 3G. Except that they now dont care bout 2g users anymore.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@Rhino 8 Vodacom connections on month to month is on the increase. Some months it even higher than December sales.Although stiff competiton Vodacom still has 60% market share in SA and Vodacom has the lowest churn. In year 2000 Vodacom was complaining to goverment they wanted the 1800mhz spectrum to grow there business. Its only from this year Vodacom has the rights to the 1800mhz band but Vodacom is implementing 3G because the licence fee is same for the 1800mhz spectrum and 3g capacity is greater.Thats why Vodacom is trying to sell 3G because it 2g network is over subscribed. In the next 5 years Vodacom 2g network will not be in existance.....Vodacom wanted extra spectrum 5 years ago govement said no.Now its whos fault............................BRIX i see in the NIGERIAN forum you are telling them lies that Vodafone branded handsets cannot view other sites.Thats BULL SHIT.Try a Vodafone handset and i GAURANTEE you can browse other sites.

Posted by brix25
@Tahir: Check that post never said anything about sites but talked about downloading content...read properly before rushing for the stylus.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@Brix you can download stuff from else where.Dont talk shit.I tried it with my V800.YOU NEVER OWN A VODAFONE HANDSET SO YOU DONT KNOW.I dont use the stylus somtimes........Brix where are you going to buy phones from in the future when everyone is branding.I know you can debrand but you will lose your warranty. So tell me where

Posted by Tahir Ally
Brix dont be supprise one day you visit Vodacare or MTN repair centres and they load there branded stuff on your phone if you take your phone for repairs. They can do this

Posted by brix25
Not without my permission they can't. I see you're not debating the fact that with a branded handset you can only download content from the network's portal unless you flash your handset to it's original fw.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@ Brix i did not flash the V800 i got and i downloaded stuff from exactmobile and Itouch.I dont know what you mean i cant download stuff outside of Live portal unless Vodacom branded handsets are different because when you turn the phone on it says VODACOM PRESENTS YOU VODAFONE LIVE with all logos.I did it so can you........When you walk into a Vodacare or MTN repair centre they dont need your permission to load software because it free for them. There is no parts for them to change......Like you walk in to Toyota dealer but you want a BMW.Toyota will sell you there TOY cars because you went to them and not BMW.

Posted by Rhino8
Enough said bout probs on network and so on, they are there and if voda cared they would sort it out.

So you can access other sites and download other content from them, but the Mp3 wont work? Whats the use?
Upgrading your sony software is easy, just use web, its free, and not branded.

Sukukhatazwa, brix...
Right, next issue I wouldn't mind finding more info about:
paying for PAYG airtime windows on SA cell networks.
This might be a bit of a shock for overseas esato members, that one has to actually pay for an airtime window, apart from your calltime/airtime credit. I am again only mentioning this as a comparison, again with UK networks, where there is NO CHARGE for any LIMITED airtime window crap.
The stipulations with almost all the the UK networks regarding PAYG is that as long as at least 1 call is made or received every 3 months(wow...won't that be hard to do...!), your sim card will always be active. If you have any CREDIT on the simcard, this will be FAR longer. If you have no credit and you have not used the sim card for quite a few months, it may be de-activated by the network. However, it requires just a call to your UK network and asking them to re-activate it, should you want to use it again. There is NO CHARGE or penalty for this at all.
I know that there are different airtime vouchers available for different time periods (up to 2 years with the 4u pack & the passport pack one, unless I'm wrong..?), but howcome no UK network has this extra charge for PAYG and SA does? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it just seems like another way of milking even more money from hard-working South Africans...

Posted by Tahir Ally
@utheta The reason the cell net works do this in SA because some networks are over subscribed like Vodacom.Vodacom is the only network in SA that has 3 different prefix which is 082 072 076.Another reason we dont have number porting yet but its coming this year.On the Vodacom network when a number is deleted on a contract it can take up 2 years for it to come back in circulation.A recent survey was done by a private company in SA that all 3 cell net have about 4million numbers that are not in use for a long time. These numbers could be for foreigners that come in SA for holidays and leave SA.Some of these foreigners do come back or it could just be some subscribers who have more than 1 numbers......South African networks dont have the prepaids customer indentification or address so they dont know who are their customers......the list goes on and on and on

Posted by uthetha ituvi
@Tahir,
Thanks for the info. The info you provide is usually interesting and informative, especially when you don't over-do the Vodacom/Vodafone cheerleading.
Another reason I ask this is because I remember when I first got a Vodacom simcard in 1994, a whole whopping 11 years ago, one had to buy airtime vouchers even back then too, surely when there wasn't nearly the over-subscription that there is now? Did we have to pay for airtime windows for the same reason back then?
I understand the foreigners issue etc., but the same applies to the THOUSANDS of visitors to the UK each year, who also buy a cheap simcard and use that for the duration of their stay, many of who also do not register their details to the network.
As regards GSM network congestion, only 02 and Vodafone operate on the GSM 900 band, the rest use GSM 1800, yet there is never any mention here of network congestion here, despite the massive numbers of users. No need to charge people for airtime even with the incredibly high volumes. So how are the UK networks managing without resorting to charging people for airtime?!?
I dunno. Maybe I don't know enough to argue regarding the frequency congestion issues and airtime window story, but you gotta admit, paying for airtime windows surely must bring some healthy revenue for the SA networks.
Despite the valid/pertinent points you have mentioned, I can't help but feel that it's still another way of milking people for a service they are already paying for.(calls,sms,mms,mutimedia,etc.). Just my opinion of course, and definitely in the interests of all SA PAYG cellphone users.

Posted by Tahir Ally
@Utheta SA only had a prepaid system implemented in 1996.The SA networks dont charge for airtime windows any more.I am going to explain how airtime window works in SA.MTN you have to make, receive a call or sms once in 3 months for your number to be active.Cell C you have to recharge your account once in 3 months.VODACOM on the other hand is still better. When you buy sim from Voda it gives a sim that has a 6,12,24 months airtime window and if you are within this time period you have to make, receive a call or sms,mms or any activity thats generates income for Voda atleast once in 7 months and 5 days.Or Vodacom does have a solution for those customer who are out of the country more than 7 months. You have to buy a passport voucher which sell @ R365.It gives you R265 airtime to use for calls, sms, data, etc. The R100 is for you to keep the sim card open for 2years......When you buy airtime between R12-R110 it will give you 3month window.R275 6 months R1000 will gives you 12months+ R100 extra

Posted by uthetha ituvi
@Tahir,
My apologies for my dodgy memory..You are correct.
I had the usual 2 year contract before reverting to PAYG in 1996.(I was over-spending on my Vodacom contract back then!)
Do you know how much of the Eastern Cape has 3G yet? Is there any time frame set by Vodacom to have 3G over most of SA?

Posted by Tahir Ally
@ Utheta It will take Vodacom another 18 months to cover SA with 3G.Vodacom said before it launched it will take them 2years to cover SA with 3G.6 months has laps and according to Vodacom they are 1 month ahead of coverage for 3G....Is there any towns in Eastern Cape that you want to know if its covered for 3G.Or visit www.vodacom.co.za and click for 3g coverage. The roll out is expanding so quickly the map Vodacom has is not up to date...Give me atleast 48hrs to find out how many 3G sites are in the Eastern Cape or planned sites for phase 2

Way off topic... Much love to Liverpool for beating Chelski. From an avowed Gooner.

Posted by uthetha ituvi
Will be staying between East London and Port Elizabeth most of the time that I'm in SA in July/August.
Doubt I'll be using much or any 3G services while on holiday, but just curious as regards the pace of 3G implementation in SA, especially around cities that are usually/traditionally 'further down the pecking order' when it comes to new developments, after Jhb, CT, Durbs etc.
Tks for the info.

Posted by uthetha ituvi
@Brix,
You..a pukka gooner?! Hmm, no wonder you're so happy Liverpool beat Abramovich's Army...ESPECIALLY after Chelski won the premiership this past weekend. Mind you, that was somewhat of a controversial goal tonight, not that it matters now. Anyway, at least Arsenal look set to finish higher than Manure! LOL!!!!

Sure that goal was controversial but it was still a goal... Maureen wasn't to pleased with the outcome but who cares anyway, money can't buy everything...it still takes guts and determination to win a game of football.

Oh my big mouth supports Liverpool... typical. DOOS!!

@786KBR,
Your name-calling to brix,or any other members, irrespective of their views, smacks of hapless youthful arrogance. If you maybe knew more about Pom football and understood what brix meant when he said he's a 'gooner', you would know that it is the nickname for totally devoted 'Gunners' fans, in other words Arsenal. He cheered Liverpool because Chelsea won the premiership from Arsenal over the weekend. If I read some of your previous posts, you seem to relish in harsh remarks. Debating cellphone issues is one thing, slating people with remarks like that is not in the interests of promoting this forum.

Posted by brix25
Yeah, I'm a Gooner... This morning at the office the big debate was whether indeed "that was a goal".... I'm not arguin...just would hate to Chelsea buying another title.

BTW, 786KBR thanks for the vote of confidence.
Unconfirmed rumours have it that MTN slashed GPRS to R1/MB. Rhino8 and RicK700 where are you guys at?

CellC slashed their data yesterday from R25 ameg to R2 a meg and on one of its other packages R17 ameg to R1.75 a meg. They dont have alot of bundles like Vodacom or MTN.CELLC does not support GPRS for its prepaid customers. They did not mention any thing about 3G

Posted by brix25
Any network launching 3G should be able to offer its users good content. That's why Vodacom licensed Vodafone live content instead of re-inventing the wheel. BTW Vodafone live can only be accessed through branded handsets...tried to open the site unsuccessfully on wap and internet.

My wife has a D-500 from Samsung for a few weeks now on 'My Call 100' (a MTN contract package). Nice little phone indeed (80Meg+) but is not this what I want to talk about. She has no GPRS package at all, therefore she is supposed to pay 2R/MB data traffic. (up/down) Now after setting up her 'onboard' email (MtnLoade and Yahoo) we exchanged guite a few emails over the last week or so.It quickly become evident that MTN charge less than the advertised 2R/Meg ! So I have run a few test emails and now I can speak with some confidence. In Jeffreysbay area at least you only pay R1.3333/Meg (on averiege) I have called MTN help/info desc and they seem to be just as puzzelt as I am.Now I see Brix mentioning something about 1R/Meg. Is that true or is the whole issue a bug with MTN measuring GPRS data ?
