welcome on board...SA! - Greetings 4rm 'Proudly nigerian Forum'

So is Vodacom ripping you guys off, while they are the only network providing 3g service and content?

Posted by Rhino8
I think voda compares quite good with other nets worldwide, and since there are not alot of ppl using 3g at the mo, the price is okay, about 60£ per gigabyte of data transfered. Normal gprs rates is a rip off tho.

Posted by RicK700i
Vodacom offers their customers R10 per megabyte on GPRS, thats cheap.

This message was posted from a T300

Only untill end of the month tho. What will happen them?
Customer care says the price will increase back to R45 per meg.

To of that is shooting themselves in the foot coz who will still use gprs at that rate? Two hours on esato gives me 8meg!

Posted by ihejirika
Hello South Africa!How r u doing?

Posted by OluYom
@Rhino: 2 hours on esato gives you 8mb?! You must be posting on each and every thread in sight. 2 weeks of browsing gives me 8mb - and people still think my P800 is glued to my hands!

Posted by Rhino8
@aya that was when i started on here and i did download quite alot, well and i guess i may be wrong, maybe i forgot to clear my gprs counter.

Posted by Rhino8
I do believe my k7i is glued to my hand.

Posted by brix25
Rhyno, edit your wap profile and swtch off pictures...you'll see the massive saving this will have. Mosts pics are just a waste of precious megabytes....and phones were not designed with the internet in mind...just give me plain text and smileys and I'm a happy camper.

Posted by RicK700i
@ brix: i also deactived the pics on the wap because that will give me cheaper gprs rates and the pictures that loads up are not important but info (text) are important. Only downloading text per page is 2c on Vodacom pre-paid gprs. @ rhin08 when do you unglue your phone from your hand?

Posted by RicK700i
Try this experiment for everybody that are using Vodacom pre-paid gprs. Work out how much airtime you use on gprs when you download 10 pages with only text at esato. But first when you logon to wap, make a note how much airtime balance you have then when you finish ,check the balance again.I've got 23c for 10 pages with wap setting pics deactivated.

Posted by brix25
@Rick... I checked out my itemised bill on the Vodacom website...GPRS came in third after voice calls and text messages.

Posted by RicK700i
@ brix25,how much airtime do you get get charged for downloading 10 pages? I get charged only 23 c ;-) oh i also bookmarked your thread :-D

Posted by brix25
@Rick... I'm not quite sure but it can't be much.

Posted by OluYom
What you are charged will depend on the size of the pages in question, I believe.

Posted by brix25
@AYA...I'm replying to you on both African threads. Back to the question... I THOUGHT wap pages were mostly averaging 4k's in size. I speak under correction.

Posted by OluYom
@brix: Usually smaller. Your last post was 1.6kb for example.

Posted by brix25
@AYA...that's tiny...is there a function in the P800 whereby you can check the size of wap pages? BTW today I saw the Nokia 9500 in the flesh...looks good, albeit a bit big.

Posted by RicK700i
What is the maximum download on Vodacom pre-paid gprs?

Posted by coolapostle
Glad to see this thread picking up steam. Am I correct to assume that ALL of U using WAP are Vodacom GPRS subs? I will also like to welcome the Wireless Monkey Man. I had visited Ur website the other day. Glad to see U here.

Posted by OluYom
@brix25: Yes, there is. With the page open, tap "Internet" -> "Page Information".

Posted by brix25
Don't have that option on the T68i. I can view the page address and profile and the security status of the wap profile when going into "status".

Posted by coolapostle
can't also do it on my T610... i have to send it to my pc via and then view the size there.

Posted by brix25
The T68i has always been an interim phone until I pluck up the courage to part with loads of money and buy either a P900 or K700.

Posted by OluYom
@brix25: The P900 & k700 are so worlds apart. What is behind the nomination of those two?

Posted by brix25
@AYA: The P900 is powerful, chances are I'd find it quite practical for work. The K700 is a good allround phone, the design is awesome. Only downside is that currently SE don't support SSL encryption so I can't use Gmail's POP3 function. I still live in hope that one day it will be fixed.

Posted by OluYom
@IMHO, I wager the P900 will fit in more with your work & lifestyle as a journalist.

Posted by brix25
@AYA... I'd rather not walk around with P900... What would the editor( who BTW owns a 5210) think: "he's trying to be a shark amongst tadpoles"... Would be funny seeing myself with a P900 even though I can afford the device.

Posted by coolapostle
I don't see any problem if U are known to be a tech-geek. I had a cellphone loooong b4 my bosses did. I also got a camphone looong b4 they did. They all knew I write about GSM and I am the resident "expert". U will find out that U will challenge them to "upgrade". Which is progress after all...

Posted by brix25
I need to get another phone...my T68i is acting up not receiving text messages that are sent to me.

Hi all im from america and just watched the movie hotel rwanda. I must say that from that movie im going to read more into it.what are your thoughts?

Posted by brix25
That movie was actually shot around Johannesburg. The movie hasn't yet been released locally but I know it's been getting good reviews in the US. BTW, welcome to the thread.

Posted by ADT0079
thanks very interesting movie it is cripping and i could feel the pain of these people...it makes me sit back and think about all the people over here in the US that hate it so much when they dont realize people over in other countrys face hardships like this everyday....I will definitly be reading more into this Attrocity....when you see the movie tell me what you think for i am sure you know alot about what happend in rwanda..how far is that from where you live????

Posted by brix25
@ADT0079: Rwanda is quite far away from South Africa ...maybe the same distance between Atlanta and Montreal. Off topic, my network is now charging just under $1/MB for GPRS...That's awesome.

Posted by coolapostle
U have sparked my interest. I hear it is Oscar material too. I will be on the lookout for the video CD. @Brix, do U have pirated video CD's on sale in SA? Or is Cinema alive and well? Sorry if I am digressing a bit...

Posted by brix25
@coolapostle. Yes, in SA if you want it you can get it but many people still go to the cinemas. The quality of pirated DVD's are for the most part bad. There has been a crackdown bcoz local distributors of Hollywood movies have been complaining. BTW have also seen Nigerian movies @ immigrant- owned businesses.

Posted by ADT0079
Shhhhhhhhhhh dont say anything i have the Award Consideration DVD of the Avaitar And Hotel Rwanda DVD Quality Very nice..it doesnt come out here in america till FRI--I would like to know what if any thing you think of the Rwanda Genoicide???

Posted by brix25
I think the genocide was horrific , people in Rwanda have made peace with one another but there are still extremists on the Hutu side seeking revenge on the Tutsi led government after they were overthrown from power.

Posted by Rhino8
More like WHAT is the exact charges 4 gprs? Spoke to voda the other day and they said R45 a meg, i figure that im payin only like 6 or 7% of that at mo.

Posted by brix25
Nah mate, on the Prodigits forum people were doing double somersaults because apparently the price for GPRS now stands at R5/MB...call Vodacom customer care for details.

Posted by Rhino8
Will do. Fanx. R5 is real reasonable.

Posted by Rhino8
Vodacom is confused as shit in a tumbledryer. Say it still R10 a meg. Till april.

Posted by brix25
@Rhino... I certainly won't be complaining about the costs bcoz it's dirt cheap compared to the other networks. MTN is still charging R45/MB...now that's madness.

Posted by Rhino8
Wont complain. According to my phones (k700i) meter im paying bout R2 per meg. Dirt cheap. Ya. Exact mobile settings dnt allow u to come to esato. Gives winsock error.

Posted by brix25
Just one question... Why are using Exactmobile? They wouldn't want you to visit esato bcoz they've got their own wap portal with premium content.

Posted by Rhino8
Exact mob is faster, or was, doesnt want to work nw, moved to 4me setts. If i try exact it says cant conect frm ip. Anyhow voda4me also got premium content.

Posted by brix25
Yeah vodacom4me has premium content but they don't block access to certain sites. Used Exactmobile when I forced to use CSD bcoz networks would only allow contract subscribers to use GPRS.

Posted by Rhino8
I will neva use my contract 4 gprs. Spend to much time on that phone anyhow.

Posted by Prily27
Ur rite rhino it is R2/mb. Btw. Hello south africans.
