With 3 unveiling a bevy of new handsets and Vodafone naming its 3G launch day next week,we had been wondering how the other UK networks would respond. No surprise then that Orange has confirmed it will launch its 3G services for consumers by the end of the year with five 3G handsets.
Orange has also lined up Nokia’s key 3G phone the 6630, which has started shipping to suppliers this week. Also on board is LG with the 8150, a slightly different take on the handset that has been doing great business for UK 3G network 3. Completing the range are the rather podgy Sony Ericsson Z1010 and Samsung’s Z107.
As for the network Orange is now claiming that it 3G coverage will be available to 66% of the population – slightly more than Vodafone but still a long way behind 3.
The big news is that Orange will be first to offer the rather natty Sanyo S750 mobile (pictured). A regular at exhibitions and trade shows, the handset is the first 3G phone to feature a sliding mechanism. It also has a mega pixel camera on board, a striking QVGA screen and offers all the calling card 3G features like person to person video calling and video download.

Dummy Sanyo S750 phones turned up into Orange Shop this week,
which would indicate to me that launch is very iminent!

The S750 will be exclusively linked to Orange's 3G network, which insiders reckon will be formally launched later this week. Sanyo's participation in the project was signalled earlier this month when the network announced its decision to offer the handset. Indeed, it's been clearly displayed on Orange's 3G website for some time.
In the flesh, the S750 is a surprisingly light (122g) slider phone sporting a 2.4in, 320 x 240, 262,144-colour display that puts plenty of others we've seen into the shade. The handset features a front-mounted VGA digicam for video calls and a 1.3 megapixel job with 4x digital zoom, flash and 16-shot rapid fire mode on the back.
Internally, there's 8MB of memory, which can be boosted by up to 256MB using the handset's SD card slot. The limit has been imposed more by what Sanyo reckons is the most generally available maximum card capacity, but company insiders told The Register the phone should be able to cope with 512MB card and up.
The S750 incorporates infrared and Bluetooth for wireless device connectivity, along with USB for phone-to-PC and phone-to-printer hook-ups, the latter courtesy of its PictBridge support. There are the usual Java games engine, MP3 player and polyphonic ringtone (72 voices) capability too.
Sanyo claims the handset's 850mAh battery will operate for up to 260 hours on stand-by, 100 minutes while making video calls and 170 minutes while handling voice-only communications. The handset can switch into GSM mode (900/1900MHz) for 260 minutes' stand-by time and 190 minutes' talk time.

Doesn't sound half bad to me. .

it looks pretty nice anyway

Seems a good handset but did i miss something as axxxr mentioned that wen not in 3G mode it switches 2 900/1900mhz? Does this mean it only runs on oranges 3G network and not 2/2.5g network if no orange 3G coverage?

Nice phone!
Looks good, but kind of reminiscent of the Nokia 7650 imo....

Voice or data?

orange have always had 3G in australia except under a different name but its the same company.
Posted by scotsboyuk
As much as I normally like Orange, I don't think very much of their range of 3G handsets. Hopefully they will improve the range over the coming months.

are orange connected to 3? the name of 3s parent company is hutchinson whampoa, while orange are owned by hutchinson telecom. any connection?
Posted by scotsboyuk
@Nature
Yes, it is the same company, behind both Orange and 3.
Posted by Jake Blues
so why dont 3 use orange for the 2g services instead of o2? it must be cheaper to use orange?...
Posted by martin1795
Orange hasn't been owned by hutchinson whampoa for quite a while now. Orange is actually owned by France Telecom.

fatreg
Who was it that thought that Orange was still owned by Hutchinson???
we were sold to France Telecam in 1997. which is why you will never see orange shares on the FTSE. as were listed as FT shares in France!

I am considering buying a 3G mobile, but I really don't want to go down the Vodafone or 3 routes, which really only leaves me with Orange at the moment. The question is, which mobile should I go for? The only two I like are the LG 8150 and the Z1010. I'm not sure about the Z1010 though as I know the V800 is better, but it is Vodafone branded.
Posted by wapchimp
The Z1010 is fine. Its a bit dated now though in comparison to the other 3G handsets. I tried it months ago, and I'm glad to say it worked fine.
Posted by scotsboyuk
@wapchimp
I always liked the look of the Z1010, but with the V800 out ...
Posted by fatreg
6630 wont be out until early jan as ive been told.
U8150 is like £119.99 on £30pm and Z1010 is £49.99 on £30PM

motorola C975 is another handset
Posted by scotsboyuk
@wapchimp
I know the C975 has an external memory card, but it seems to be a rediculous concept to give a 3G mobile only 2 MB of internal memory!
Posted by Jake Blues
has orange started 3g payg yet? if so how much is the z1010?
Posted by fatreg
no 3g payg yet!
wont be until next year sometime!

The 3G phone went live this morning. I just bought a Z1010. Free on upgrade for high users and you get 50MB data per month for 1 year so i didtched my data card...not a bad deal at all!
Posted by goldenface
@ Jiggy Jaggy,
is the phone nice?
Did you have a look at the Sanyo model?
What made you choose the Z1010?
I am getting increasingly drawn to the Sanyo model. Am I making a mistake? I am also torn between the Z1010 and a P910 for my upgrade. Or should I ditch Orange and go for a V800 for 50 quid on Voda?
Posted by JiggyJaggy
Sorry for late reply guys...we have had so many requests for 3G handsets today! The z1010 is nice as the software/menu is similar to the t630/z600/t610 style. the browser seems alot more reliable also than the LG and Samsung handsets. The z1010 had easily outsold the other handsets 2:1 today!
Posted by goldenface
Ta Jiggy. What colour is the SE? Will I get one on a free upgrade do you reckon?
Posted by axxxr
The Orange SE Z1010 is the grey version which imo looks better than the red!
Posted by JiggyJaggy
Pretty impressed. Unlike "3" handsets the battery has lasted me all day and only gone down by approx quarter after nearly 30 min video calls. And I have had the phone on all day and browsed nearly 4mb data!
Posted by goldenface
I went into the Orange shop today to look at the Z1010.
It is not a small phone is it although it wasn't much bigger that the LG model.....didn't feel particulary heavy though.
Posted by scotsboyuk
The size of the Z1010 has put me off somewhat, but I am not all that keen on Vodafone, so I am still considering buying a Z1010 from Orange.
Posted by Vlammetje
nonsense
Posted by scotsboyuk
@Vlamm
It must be difficult for you, using a V800 when I know how much you would prefer the Z1010.
Posted by Vlammetje
just go and buy a Z1010 already
how's Orange coverage where you are?
Posted by scotsboyuk
@Vlamm
Very good, according to Orange's maps. I am still trying to choose between the V800 and Z1010, I want the V800, but I prefer Orange.
Posted by Vlammetje
I recommend the V800 with all my heart
Posted by vanquish
Yes yes we all know you love your precious vlamm
I like the look of the grey z1010 better axxxr, i must agree!
Posted by whentheleveebreaks
can anyone with an orange z1010 confirm you can use mp3s as ring-tones.
Thankyou (if it does i'll buy one today)
Posted by vanquish
Go and have a go, but i think they can!
Posted by Chazzer3
Does anyone have a confirmed release date for the 6630 on Orange, along with the other 3G phone/s????
As you may have noticed I am looking for a 6630 on Orange, over Christmas, I've astablished, it is after Christmas, but when is the question. Hopefully before the 9th of Jan! (For certain reasons!)
Thanks, Charlie.
Posted by fatreg
not until after xmas!!
jan is what ive been told

@ whentheleveebreaks
Yes, I can confirm the z1010 can play mp3's as ringtones.
Posted by vanquish
Brill, that's good, although i don't like having my phone playing MP3 as ringtones, because ...
people may think my taste of music is a bit..........
