hi all,
if i wasn`t slightly balding i`d be tearing my hair out any time now. i have a k500i on virginmobile uk and my isp is tiscali uk. i would like to be able to view my tiscali inbox from my phone via email and perhaps send the odd one. i`ve tried many variations with no success. i`ve searched this forum but can`t quite find the information i need, although it`s probably there somewhere and i just couldn`t find it. any help would be greatly appreciated.
cheers for now dave slightly balder in not so sunny cornwall uk.

Do you get any error messages at all? Something that you need to make sure of, is that if you are using GPRS you'd need to use virgin's SMTP server - although to be honest I'm unsure of what virgin have or support.

this is the info i got from virgin. error message talks about wrong mailbox or password. cheers dave..
Thanks for your email to Virgin Mobile, regarding emailing from your phone.
Some handsets have a built in email facility, like the Sony Ericsson T610, K550i, Siemens SL55, Nokia 7650 and Philips 355. This allows you to send emails using standard WAP. The settings you'll need are available from your email and internet service provider, just ask for:
Email address
POP3 server name
Email user name and password
ISP Dial up number
STMP Port number used for sending emails
DNS address
The standard WAP settings are:
Name: Virgin Mobile
Dial-up number: +44 795 396 8988
Call type: ISDN
Login name: user
Password: wap
IP address: 149.254.001.010
IP port: 9201
Home: http://www.virgin.com/mobile/wap/ Linger time: 120
Once you've typed in your new settings, switch your phone off and then switch it back on. That allows it to reconnect to the network with the new settings.
We're sure you'll be up and running in no time.

Well,at least virgin give a reasonable reply, quite unlike o2 and their absolutely horrendous, so called customer service!always liked virgin mobile...their travel sector leaves a little to be desired however!

I guess Virgin doesn't have GPRS. You'd need your ISP dial-up settings then, or to use the CSD settings that they have given you - that might work, but bare in mind that your ISP's SMTP will probably not allow connections through it from anywhere else but it's own connections (ie. If your ISP is tiscali, then you would need to be on a tiscali dialup to use smtp.tiscali.co.uk).

Virgin have got gprs now.they started gprs and mms about 4 or 5 months ago!

yes i downloaded the gprs settings from their web site. so am i stuck ?
cheers dave..

This depends on weather or not their WAP settings you downloaded are using an Access Point that will allow you to talk to the 'real' internet, as apposed to just WAP.
Normally service providers will have a few different access points for different uses. For example on Orange there is:
orangewap = for wap page access
orangeinternet = for internet & e-mail access
orangemms = for sending/recieving mms messages
You would have a different data account and interenet profile for each of these. Have a look inside these for me and let me know what you see:
connectivity > data comm. > data accounts > highlight each profile and press edit > tell me the APN of each profile (I'll try figure it out)
connectivity > internet settings > internet profiles > list what profiles you have in here
None of this should be personal information for you, but this might help me help you.

hi,
there are two data accounts. picture message and virgin wap gprs.both use apn: goto.virginmobile.uk.
the same appear in internet profiles..

Okay,
I believe Virgin use the outgoing SMTP server of mail.virgin.net. So you can try using that as your outgoing mail server in your e-mail accout settings. Try this for me.
Go to messages > E-Mail > Settings > Choose a new account or edit account
Connect Using: Your WAP GPRS Internet Profile
Protocal: POP3
Incoming Server: Your e-mail providers pop3 server
Incoming Port: Your e-mail providers pop3 server port
Encryption: No encryption
Mailbox: This'll be your e-mail username
Password: This'll be your e-mail password
Outgoing Server: This'll be mail.virgin.net
Outgoing Port: Try the default port.
E-Mail Address: Yours.
Download: Up to you
From Name: Your name.
Nothing else really matters - just make sure you dont have a check interval or you'll get a huge bill.

Only thing that makes me think this may not work is that on this page here: http://www.filesaveas.com/gprs.html
Virgin mobile doesnt have details for an APN that can access the real internet/e-mail.
I don't know for sure though - worth a try and maybe call them to confirm?

Have you successfully managed to send outgoing email via mail.virgin.net? I always get an error "sending failed".
Reading my ntlworld pop3 mail works fine.
I emailed Virgin customer support, asking for the address of their outgoing smtp server for use with GPRS, and there reply was that this isn't something they support at the moment.
I've even tried smtp.t-email.co.uk (T-Mobiles smtp server), as Virgin appear to use the same network, but that doesn't work either.

Welcome to Esato!
Why not register an email account with virgin?
thats what i did - much easier!

Registering an account with virgin is an interesting idea, thanks. Presumablly you're referring to their PAYG account? I've also considered creating a hotpop.com account, as they allow smtp.
Anyway, I've carried on testing, and made some discoveries about my K500i. It seems that the K500i email client supports SMTP authentication, which is good, as some ISP's provide access to their SMTP relays.
However, the settings page for email on the k500i doesn't have separate options for the SMTP username and password, it seems to use the same one as for POP3 collection.
So, I've now got email sending working with my ClaraNet account. ClaraNet support relaying via their smtp server if you've got an account with them.
I don't think ntlworld supports smtp authentication, I need to do some more tests.

Hi All,
Virgin Mobile do have access to T-Mobiles GPRS bearer, but at present they only use the GPRS bearer for WAP access and for sending/receiving MMS content.
Because of this they do not have an SMTP server address to offer?
I still use CSD/GSM (Dial-up) connection to access my Emails from both yahoo.uk and virgin.net with no problems...
