i-mate Jam

The i-mate Jam (to be called the MDA Compact under T-Mobile's branding) is reminiscent of the Eten P300 in that it's a smaller-than-usual Windows Mobile device.

In fact, it's even smaller than the eten P300, measuring 108 x 58 x 18mm. It's got a 1.3-megpixel camera 64MB of ROM and 64MB of SDRAM. There's also Bluetooth (though it sounds like this could be an optional addition for carriers) and SD(IO)/MMC expansion. All that's missing is wireless and you'd have a perfect little smartphone. Pricing from T-Mobile is still to be confirmed, but you can buy it unlocked and SIM-Free from Expansys for £399.95 right now.

Nice but lacks style. P910 looks better !

Yep that will be the T-mobile branded version, but the sim-free will still be the i-mate jam.available here at expansys

All those phones look very nice. From where do you get all those phone informations?

Posted by deuxani
Or under these other names:

- HTC Magician (The original "phone")
- Qtek S100
- i-Mate Jam
- T-Mobile MDA Compact
- O2 XDA II Mini

I can't wait till this one is out.

Posted by maddav
Just read Expansys' page, and it says it has Bluetooth 1.2, (as opposed to reg. 1.1), does anyone know what range this is?

Posted by deuxani
According to the T-Mobile site it's 1.2 (40 metres)

Posted by yat168
looks a bit plain, bland.

And what a name "I-mate Jam"!

Posted by BezNez
Does it have MP3 Player?

Posted by Chazzer3
Yep, it says MP3 in those specification lists just at the top in the pics that axxxr posted!

This is awesome, any sign of a cheaper purchase price anywhere?

Posted by axxxr
It looks like Chinese company Dopod has released in China almost all latest HTC made cellphones under its own brand. The latest additions are HTC Magician (known in EU as T-Mobile MDA Compact) branded as Dopod 818 and HTC Feeler (known in EU as T-Mobile SDA) branded as Dopod 575. It slowly becomes boring to report about yet another distributor/operator branding the very same phone with yet another name, so to prettify these news items from series "HTC XYZ will be sold under name ABC" a bit,i present here some pictures of girls with a Dopod branded phone!

having used the i-mate SP3i or a week and a half now I am still waiting for the jam but I have high hopes that it will be my preferred device of the two

It certainly looks funky. Nice, clean design.

Posted by dave_uk
7 days to go till Expansys get it, apparently!!

Could be Goodnight Vienna for the P910i???!!!

Posted by masseur
yep. I have my expansys alert in there, thats how I got the SP3i (and many, many other things from expansys unfortunately)

Posted by coolfighter
how much does have as CPU SPEED
is it XSCALE 400 mhz or the new CPU release

Posted by masseur
its an Intel Bulverde 416 MHz Processor

Posted by dave_uk
@masseur

Have you had problems with them? Or is it just unfortunate due to the sheer amount of money you've spent (no doubt keeping them afloat!)?

Posted by masseur
my first ever purchase from Expansys was a T68 when it first came out and I had difficulty then because they had been hit with alot of fraud recently at that time and took quite a bit of time checking on people. I had to send them a fax of my credit card and passport.

Since then good as gold. never a problem

Posted by Chazzer3
I really want to get one of these, athough the price tag is expensive it isn't as much as the P910i, this looks so awesome, I think there might be something on my christmas list....................

Looks so aaawwweeesome!

Posted by masseur
it does look expensive until you consider what you are getting...

a device which runs the full windows mobile (not the lessor smartphone version in the SP3i) and therefore which has pocket excel and word included.

it also has a 1.3 megapixel camera and though it won;t be anywhere near as good as the S700 it will certainly be better quality than the P910.

it has a 416Mhz processory which is faster than my previous iPAQ (the 4150 which had 400mhz - I now have the hx4700 which runs at 624Mhz )

it will run any pocketpc software

it takes SD cards which are already available up to 2gb at much cheaper prices than SD pro

64mb ram and 64mb rom

it has a 2.8" touch screen all in a device only marginally bigger than a T610/K700/S700 etc

I could rave on and on but...

pics from First 60 minutes with T-Mobile MDA Compact

in germany they are selling these babies with a software that brings up a visual mobile phone keypad on the screen for one hand operation, does anyone no if expansys will be shipping these babies with that type of software? i guess massuer has the answer to that

Posted by masseur
it has to have an on screen keypad since there is no real keypad. all windows mobile phones have this, its only the windows mobile smartphones (like SP3i, Mpx220 etc) that don't sice they have a keypad

Posted by upper
massuer i no that but, so far i have seen a virtual keypad for for dialing a phone number, but i also so one with letters on each keypad numbers so it can allow you to send txt messages or email and so on..., you see, so a person wouldnt have to bring out that embarassing stypus pen out lol that will make a person look like..., you no ddduuhhh

well even so if they dont ship it with the strawberry jam on toast, you would still be able to purchase it separetly i guess, i gues i shouldnt worry too much its like being in prison for waiting one these jam's.

ok sorry for my misunderstanding

well I still haven't seen a real Jam yet but I assume what you are talkoing about is what is shown on this i-mate Jam page

so my guess is that it is standard.

btw where have you seen this in Germany as I haven't seen any in downtown Frankfurt (Zeil) yet?

Posted by upper
so sorry for taking so long massuer, it was late last night you see, but anways back to the point, this is what i meant, the virtual keypad has numbers and letters so u can write txt messages and email with one handed operation, pretty cool much better than taking out the silly billy stylus pen out http://www.howardforums.com/s[....]503636&perpage=15&pagenumber=5 i was trying to add a picture to this thread but it didnt allow me, but anyways i have the link so you can see what i am talking about.

_________________massuer there is another link for it being available in germany, i dont speak germany but i think its out though, http://www.t-mobile.de/presse/1,1807,11320-_,00.html

looking at the pic...

I'd say thats a standard part of the O/S but I'll be able to confirm that next week hopefully when I get mine

as for the t-mobile one, no thanks! I like my phones unbranded

Mobile-Review have reviewed the i-mate JAM which is known by different names in different territories, interesting...

http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/review/htc-magician-en.shtml for Part I
and
http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/review/htc-magician-2-en.shtml for Part II

hey there..... i was thinking of getting a sp3i but now that the jam is out am slightly confused...
what do u recommend?

and i am a regular sms user... wont the lack of a keypad be a problem in the jam ?
and the regular pressing of the screen wiht my finger for input casue any problems wiht screen ?

thx

Posted by masseur
still waiting for mine, won't get it until next week but you'd have to assume the screen is strong enough since its designed to be used single handed without the stylus, though I expect I will use the stylus more than my fingers.

which to get really comes down to whether you want a silghtly larger (width only) device with full pocketpc software (including pocket excel and word), a bigger screen and no real keypad, browsing ni portrait or landscape mode (indeed anything you like in landscape mode as it is now supported natively) etc etc or whether you want real keys and a slightly cut down version of pocketpc (windows mobile) for smartphones and are happy with the smaller screen (albeit same resolution as K700, V800 etc though slightly larger phsically than those)

basic specs for comparison

SP3i
107.5mm(L) x 44.5mm(W) x 18mm(T)
screen 2.2 inch, 176x220 pixels
32mb ram
mini SD under battery
VGA camera

Jam
108mm(L) x 58mm(W) x 18.1mm(T)
2.8 inch, 240X320 pixels
64mb ram
SD with full external access for hot swap
1.3 megapixel camera

for me I know I'll be dumping the SP3i for the Jam

Posted by dave_uk
No comparison IMHO....the Jam looks fantastic, but if you wanted those features with a keyboard, you'd surely be looking at the i-mate PDA2K (aka T-Mobile MDA III) rather than an SP3i, though I guess there's a fairly substantial price difference!

Posted by masseur
not to mention size difference

125mm (H) X 71.6mm(W) X 18.7mm (T)

the PDA2K is more like iPAQ size and has a 3.5 inch and can't really compare with the SP3i and Jam size wise

if I was going to get something that big I'd be getting the 6000 series iPAQ

Let me get this straight

Better Camera (The same ok)
Touch Screen
Better OS
More Features

And CHEAPER than the S700

OK.

Its official SE's overprices phones SUCK.

Posted by masseur
the Jam camera isn't as good as the S700. Although its same resolution its still only CMOS compared with CCD in the S700

S700 has never tempted me, even with the post yesterday that it can be had for free on a 30 pound/mth contract

I'd be comparing the Jam to the P series rather than the S700 as its a smartphone with the same extensibility that the P series has but with much tighter windows integration regarding sync capability etc.

But hats to be expected when both sides of the cable are microsoft

Posted by SpinDoctoR
i have thru a treo 600 , Se k700i, thr original imate smartphone.. all have their ups and downs.. but active sync wa alwasy a problem with the treo and and original SP. K700i is a fantastic phone. good video playback... but i am icking for something better now... Jam seems like a reasonable choice. but lack pf the keyboard seems to hold me back. the pda2k is a bit hefty....
do u think the jam will have similar BLuetooth problems that was mentioned for the sp3i ?

Posted by Yazan24
But also the different OS's makes it hard to compare the Symbian and Pocket PC thing,

But I was just clarifying that A NON SMART PHONE costs more than a Smart Phone which has almost all the features and more.

Posted by SpinDoctoR
totally agree with u on the S700 issue... i think it should have been the same price range as a nokia 7610. then it would be great phone..... i have seen it... sort of like a souped up k700i thast all.....

Posted by masseur
and I agree 100%. I think we've established that the S700 is way overpriced in quite a few threads including the main one by vanquish. Its most of the reason why I didn't buy it and now am looking elsewhere away from for new phones to play with.

Actually its now 3 weeks since I last used any phone so I hope that the new year brings something new and exciting from but in the meantime the V3 and this Jam should keep me happy!

hi there all again, here is the review of the i-mate jam from gangster bengalboy from the ghetto lol enjoy like i enjoyed it

http://www.howardforums.com/s[....]511311&perpage=15&pagenumber=1

Posted by SpinDoctoR
hey was wondering which would be a better choice... the jam or the SE p910.... i mean the r roughly priced the same ..... lookin for a multimedia phone which is very custamisable... and application rich..
thx

Posted by upper
i would say the i-mate jam, obviously it has a windows media player and all but apparently the battery life on the JAM is amazing, if you have read the review of bengalboy he will tell you how long he was playing around with the media until the battery ran out COOL and plus there are alot of software for the JAM and you can get wifi if your into those things but at the end of the day the battery performance is just awearsome, plus you can get 2gig sd card for the JAM which you can so much mp3 and vedio clips and can convert dvd to win media player compressed with good quality sound and pic. you can have all that in one 2gig sd card so which one do you think?

do i have a choice

thx a bunch

plus for t9 function on the jam . is a there a in built software on the jam ?

Posted by amnesia
should be noted that it's really created by a company called HTC i think. It's a chinese company. iMate simply rebrands it like how providers do.

as deuxani mentioned
