As of tomorrow,Italian mobile customers will be able to pick up the A1000 on Hutchison's '3' UMTS service. This smartphone, which was announced early this year, still offers some PDA-like features, including a touchscreen display. The real kicker, though, is its ability to conduct videocalls, and apparently the A1000 on the high-speed UTMS network from 3, is the first smartphone truly capable of this feat—or so they say. Ready-up, Italy, for the inevitable video-enhanced telefonate sessuali that will begin tomorrow.Coming to other Hutchison UMTS markets.

The Italian branch of mobile network operator Three has announced the general availability of the A1000, Motorola's new 3G communicator, becoming the first 3G operator worldwide to offer the top-of-the-line handset. Already available to Italian customers for purchase, the A1000 descends from the A900 line of communicators and remains based on the UIQ platform, although offers several improvements - and a considerable size reduction - over past models.

The A1000 is powered by Symbian OS 7.0 operating system with the UIQ platform running atop, boasting WCDMA 2100 MHz, GSM/GPRS 900/1800/1900 MHz functionality. A 2.9" TFT colour display offers a resolution of 208 x 320 pixels and 16-bit colour depth, accompanied by an integrated 1.2 Megapixel camera with video recording and digital 4x zoom capabilities.

Chalking up a communicator first, the A1000 also supports 2-way video conferencing (Point to Point Video), streaming/capture/playback of MP3/MPEG4, as well as SMS, MMS and E-mail (IMAP4, POP3). Additional software includes a web browser powered by technology from Opera Software, complete with the company's Small Screen Rendering technology, as well as viewing of documents stored in Office format and Adobe Acrobat files courtesy of the bundled Picsel Document Viewer.

Traditional PIM applications including Calendar, Contacts and Notes are also present, and synchronization is handled by SyncML (OTA) or Desktop PC Sync software-wise. Hardware-wise, the A1000 offers connectivity through USB and Bluetooth, and location based services are available through AGPS support, whilst corporations will see their needs met by the inclusion of a VPN client.

24 MB of non-volatile memory can be supplemented by means of memory cards in Motorola's proprietary Triflash-R format, allowing more space for personalization features such as downloadable pictures, ringtones and wallpapers. Multimedia content such as audio and video clips can also be downloaded, as can J2ME applications and games.

Additional content is also offered to users through the Three portal software installed on the A1000, touting various streaming video sources such as "La Tua TV" programs, VideoGoals, VideoNews and other multimedia content.

According to Three, the battery included in its sales package will offer up to 200 hours of standby time, up to 225 minutes of voice calls and up to 105 minutes of video calls, all in a package measuring 117 x 59 x 19 mm and weighing 160 g.

Currently, the A1000 is available exclusively in Italy, and sells for 499 EUR with a choice of several subscription plans.
