It is said that 86% of Americans believe in God. Therefore I have a very hard time understanding why there is such a mess about having the 10 commandments on display or "In God We Trust" on our money and having God in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Thomas Jefferson and many other 'founding fathers' advocated the separation of church and state.
The United States was based upon the principle of freedom of religion, and the government does not exist to promote a religion, just to protect them (to some extent and with exceptions).
@Jn, would you be offended if i put my athiest views all over Washington DC? Should we let our government tell us what to believe?

This is perhaps a first, but I agree with kimcheeboi.
The United States government is a secular government, it is supposed to be seperate from religion and offer no bias for or against any religion. If one has scripture from one religion on government buildings then one should have scripture from all religions on government buildings, although, in my opinion, one should have none.

The problem that lies with the government supporting religions (especially the scenario that scotsboy mentioned about putting pieces of text from every religion on government buildings) is: how are we do decide which religion gets what? What are the criteria for putting verses from the Torah, the Bible, Buddhist manuscripts, etc. when there is no real way to determine which religion should get what? Supporting all religions would only create more problems that could never be objectively solved and it would make government the regulator of religion (after all the government would have the final say on what is a religion and what each religion conisists of).
So if the government cannot support all religions, it must support none, on the basis of equality for all.

And when the precedent of judicial review was set, what happened? Did these judges take over the United States? The courts review federal actions and make sure they follow Consitutional guidelines, NOT guidelines that the Bible has set.

It could just be me...... but I fail to understand why a Supreme Court should carry religious statements to begin with. It had better have the constitution and lady justitia on it's walls imho.
Then again the 10 commandments are universally accepted rules...... no matter what religion it is never OK to kill for example.... o are they really an expression of christianity?? I doubt they were intended that way.
I think they simply tried to decorate the building with recognizable law-and-rules-related images. Something even the ancient Romans, Greeks and Egyptians did. Something almost every civilization has doen at one point. So what is the big deal in it anyway?
Having that said: what is your point in opening this thread jojo?

The whole law of the West is based on the teachings in the bible. Doesnt matter what religion you are, thats what its based on, so, although its a little pretentious and over the top "grafitti-ing" verses from the bible all over courthouses, there is nothing "wrong" with it.
