I am resolved not to worry my head about Etisalat's strategy. Most of these guys don't listen to consumers anyway. We almost always end up disappointed. When they launch, we'll taste the pudding and see if its worth salivating over.

if i get to 3g coverage zone and i'm using my non 3g phone which max speed of connection is 115kps will connect at that maximum rate, since i could still go up to 400kps if i had the right gear

@Dawny: Yes I currently work in Benin.
I wouldn't touch starcomms with a 40ft pole if I were u. Virtually everyone I know who bought starcomms for their internet is complaining right now. I currently use Multilinks but I have some problems with browsing here as I got my wireless card from their Lagos office and their customer care center isn't functional yet.

I disagree that the so called elite phone users who are data aware only constitute 2% of the mobile phone market. You only need to visit portals like Prodigits or Nairaland to realise the extent to which Nigerians have embraced the data culture.
Oh yes attractive data service is the way to go for the new entrants into an already saturated telecommunications market.

To the best of my knowledge, neither glo or MTN has officially launched 3G in ibadan, so i guess they can not be held responsible for the inefficiency of their services yet. I do make video calls from my glo line to my wife's mtn line regularly and the cost is abt N50/min. The funny thing is,i am yet to meet anyone else who can make such calls.

You must have picked one of those special numbers i.e. Golden, Silver, etc. Standard numbers cost N0.00. I have reservbed two so far - one for myself and the other for missus - and both cost nothing.

@amby: have u tried the data-thirstiest app i've seen to date? Ie GMaps? For anyone that has got extra mbs from mtn's "24 hr" data bundle, try out the google maps. Its great if u have a fast connection. But beware if u are using "per kb".
While i was in maiduguri, the initial map was the default i guess, ie London. But in kaduna, it managed pin point me in kaduna. I guess it followed the trail of servers cos my phone has no gps.
Speaking of gps, does any SE phone have it? Or does one have to get a add-on?

On my WM i780, I need no mods to get any of the above apps (or better). I simply download the apps, and there we are. Now you know how I can let go of it - and not look back too

A friend of mine and I have tried getting the etisalat numbers via a bunch of networks, but Glo seems to be blocking the sms. we have tried 3 glo numbers but none have received the confirmation sms. thru mtn and zain it was almost instantaneous.

I'm sure Etisalat will inform everyone who registered a sim of thier launch date so they will have people buzzing around the offices on that day. with the range of lines they have on offer to register, I doubt they have the 1 million subs purported here earlier.

Looks like glomobile will soon launch new data plans in response to MTN's.
We should be expecting:
24/7 ....... 10,000/month (3gig max)
9am to 9pm.......6,000/month (3 gig max)
Weekend ........4,000/month (3 gig max)
PAYB......1 or 5 or 10 kobo/ kilobyte
I called customercare and the assistant was ranting away before she was probably reminded that the data plans have not been officially announced.
Only drawback may be refundable deposits requirement for the 24/7, daily and weekend.
Not too sure about PAYB info because she said 1 kobo/kb and corrected herself by saying 5 kobo or 10 kobo/kb.
Wonder why glo is always waiting for MTN to take the initiative?
MTN crashed call rates and introduced free night calls, glo responded.
MTN crashed BlackBerry charges by 50 %, glo responded
MTN introduced friendly data plans, glo is planning to respond. HABA!

load N10,000 and type 101 on sms and send to 131...(24/7 monthly package)....3gig max.
Caution: Make sure you load the daily package in the morning to enjoy it all day because it terminates anytime from midnight.

@all: zain's "tru" campaign is a "tru" example that they have no new ideas! Apart from what i assume are typos in the advert (0.25k/sec calls on weekdays ie it should be 25k/sec or N0.25k/sec! Unless its actually 1/4k per sec which would make it the cheapest call rate ever in naija at 15k/min!!!!), its nothing really new for a company trying to come out of the shell of celtel. What happened to the 0802 that offered free monthly texts? We need new ideas like that. Maybe i should send them my CV? Or should i send it to amby? @dawn: i'm no expert, but have u tried repairing or reinstalling the norton, then immediately uninstalling? Before u do that u can also try to uninstal using the installation cd. If it works, just pay me my consultation fee!

So Glo internet packages are finally out and at competitive rates too. It appears that both assistants I spoke to yesterday were correct to an extent, each gave me their own half of the full picture.
I have requested for comprehensive info by mail and will post it here.
The downside is that all plans require security deposits. Can you imagine? Security deposits for internet packages. This is certainly a first, and a bad move.

@Brym: The outside-bundle rate of 5k per kb is a steal. That's one third MTN's cost. But has Glo solved the problem of unstable data services in various locations? I also hear that Zain has started SMS activation of WAP again, and 3G now available. I got 3G in my area but couldnt browse though. Will 1tisalat thrill us?

@O'Yom: Glo is still unstable at my location, both GPRS and 3G. I rarely use it these days. I am on MTN's Nite Plan.
I do prefer the MTN plans, they are few but pocket friendly and easy to implement. I don't have to show my face at their friendship centres to use the plans.
