@oluy: u can sign me up! PM me the details of what kind of content u r looking for and how often u need it.
@all: i think mtn is just flubbing it as they go. If they are having probs with thier billing system, they should have done the usual and give the service out at a token price.

@all: I just spoke with someone at MTN Data Support. He's asked for detailed info so he can investigate. If you have used the 50mb Daily, please PM me the following details: phone line used; time subscribed; time cut off; amount of data used by the time you were cut off. This is an opportunity to do something about it. Thanks.

Feedback on today's MTN Bundle experiment: I got 50mb! I still believe that my theory has merit. The times in the past that I got less than 50mb were occassions when I did not use up the 50mb allocation by midnight. In my own case, the expiry text came in between 12 midnight and 2am. Either the system delayed or a buffer period exists before users are cut off. @Brym: From your statement, you were deuactivated both times around 2am - plus or minus. There's a pattern emerging, surely. what everyone can do when next they want to try the bundle is that you send the activation SMS anytime from 12 midnight. That'll give you a window of roughly 12-12. Then see if you don't get your 50mb. If you cant request around midnight, do it as soon as you wake up in the morning.

@oluy: its the deceptive advertizing that annoys me. If i decide to activate at 10pm to use the supposed 24hrs till the next day, im screwed! It reminds me of glo's limited unlimited access. Rather than elude to 24hrs or 1 day access, they should have gone for something like midnight to midnight. I know, it doesnt sound "sexy" but that's why they have thier PR and branding staff for.

3rd Experience: Activated @ 2.44pm and de-activated @ 1:21am. Data used: 32.8mb.
Comments: I'm back to 15k/kb(pay as you browse) until this issue is resolved and I am compensated. Over to you O'Yom since I already have an issue with glo at NCC's Consumer Bureau.

I guess this MTN stuff has to do with the way their computers are programmed, which means you get deactivated by midnight/early morning no matter when ur activated. I guess the best option is to go for the 1month plan or get activated by b4 6am.

Ouch Blackgig, 0mb? That must've hurt.
@Oluyom: I think ur theory might hold water. I got cut off at about 2.30am.
Still trying to purchase another daily bundle without success.

Right on! Once we understand that this is how it works, then we can adjust accordingly. Blackgig's statistics also add weight to this theory. He activated towards midnight and was still deactivated shortly after midnight.
@abu: You are right about the misleading adverts. They should have specified 12-12 instead of saying 24hours. I'll mention all these to my contact at MTN.
But at least we know now that the 50mb is not a hoax.
I suggest that those who need access only at night should subscribe for the All-Night package (N2,500, 10pm-5am for 30 days, 3GB data cap). That's a good deal, if I ever have seen one.

My target was the 3gig Night option but with the Daily option giving us unstable results I don't want to be the guinea pig. It won't be funny to receive a text, two weeks into the plan, from MTN saying 'your monthly' has expired when you have barely used 1gig.

Well, i guess i'll be you guys' guinea pig, subscribed for the 30 day all day option yesterday, let's see how it goes.
Posted by OluYom
We are also using the 30-day All-day bundle at the office. Its been 2 weeks now, and so far so good. Back to 50mb, I subscribed again a little after midnight Sunday morning, and used it all through the day. As at the time I went to bed yesterday night, I had used 48.6mb of data. I am certain I would have gotten the full 50mb if I had stayed awake and kept firing. But I had had a hectic day and needed my sleep. Guys, it is clear how this thing works now.

Okay lets see how that plays out. But 3gig or 30days (whichever comes first) is by far a better deal, as it works out to N400 daily for 100mb data download.

You mean N400 "nightly"?
Posted by 2tek
i'm on the night shift, dunno if i ll be able to rack up 3gigs on it because i'm outta 3G coverage so its only gprs and connecting that to the laptop only makes my phone sweat and my laptop groan cos its snail speed or even worse. all i use it for is to browse via my operamini and download a few things for the java phone. well if they renegade on the pre-nupt i 'll holla.
peace.
Posted by mamba
@2tek, that's the reason why I'm not subscribing to the mtn data service yet. There's no 3g coverage in akure, and I don't wanna waste my money on snail speed gprs when I have experienced 250kb/sec download speed in Lagos on same network.

Oluyom you have solved the puzzle. On behalf of fellow pnf members i award you the Nobel prize for cognitive reasoning. I was activated by 10.32pm on 24/8/08 and i disconnected at about 1.25am on 25/8/08
I have also noticed that speed decreases from midnight

Dear friend, I am not as smart as you think. That award belongs to my co-contributor at MobilityNigeria.com, Dayo Olutunfese. He came up with the theory.
Thanks still.

I am yet to notice the speed difference between GPRS and 3G here in Ibadan, both are equally slow, night or day.
Posted by OluYom
@artwales: That would suggest that while 3G infrastructure is in place at your location (and you can see a 3G icon on your phone), its not actually active yet. I could be wrong though - and that would be the most absurd scenario ever for an active 3G network.

@ artwales,3g is on full throttle in Ibadan. i was in ib last wknd, and i got lag speed there too. it aint wide spread tho'. it's there in UCH cos thats where i stayed. it was absent in AKOBO. I'm sure it will be in d heavy zones e.g U.I,DUGBE.
I ve switched on all pics etc in my browser so that i won't short change myself.
@d pnfer formerly known as AYA,tot broadband was supposed to deliver speeds up to 3MB?
Posted by OluYom
@2tek: Theoretically, 3G gives 384kbps max. In reality, you'll get between 150 and 250kbps. 3.5G (HSDPA) gives you 3.6mbps theoretically. In reality, you get between 300 and 800kbps regular and can peak 1.8mbps during downloads (I have). Note also that you cannot experience the glory of 3G/3.5G broadband by browsing on your phone because of limited processing power. But as a modem with your PC, enjoy true broadband...

It is still a good deal, 3G or no 3G, afterall MTN GPRS and 3G cost the same. If you're lucky and within EDGE coverage, you'll get some good speeds too. But I must say that even lowly GPRS is quite usable on the MTN network these days. I remember surving on that alone for official work some weeks back.

OluYom thanks 4 d assistance.do u use ur fone as modem wen browsin on mtn daily package?also wats d size of a regular web page like bbc, google etc
Posted by OluYom
@dawny: Usually, when I do the Daily Bundle thing, I am mostly at home or out and about. As such, I hardly ever use it via PC but on my smartphone. But believe me when I say that I do serious browsing on my phone - more than most people ever do on their PCs. And I don't use Opera mini, so its generally the normal web for me even when on mobile.
The Google homepage is about 2.36 kB, while a Google page on which a search has been run weighs about 6.33 kB. Some websites are have 'heavy' pages. It all depends on the purpose of the site and how it is designed.

@dawny: I changed username 'cos I was bored. Stupid, shey? Why not try regular PC suite? N-series PC suite is likely to work with newer N-series devices. Also be sure you have the right USB cable.

@dawny: Yes; I'm aware of the looming Etisalat launch. They already have billboards here and there. But I'm not holding my breathe. I've learnt the hard way not to expect salvation from any new entrant. See Glo. See MTS. See Visafone. Oh, Etisalat is on TV too now. Any ad you see asking, "Are you ready to talk" - na Etisalat be that.

I use a Windows Mobile phone, O2 XDA Flame and it is 3G enabled but like Oluyom said, one should still be thankful to MTN for being generous even with the GPRS speed.

@oluyom i feel u with not expectin 2 much from etisalat.but i beleive dey have 2 bring wat we have not seen i nigerian telecom market 2 hook sub.dats where we the sub benefit.and the old operators wit sit up,and face reality of time. wat of daarsat, bin waitin for dem 2 launch.they keep sayin dis month every month.i don tire self

@dawny: depending on what u want to do with ur laptop/ pc, the 50 mb might not be sufficient. I dont really like the idea of using a laptop to browse on capped or set data charges. You will have to really tweek ur settings (no pix, limited javascript etc) to conserve ur MB.
@oluy: this is the 1st explanation i've heard abt the change from aya. Erm....

hi @abubakar,is nice for some new 2 join in d discussion.where is every 1?@abubakar re vu usin ur fone as modem?wats ur take on etisalat?any expectation?

O'Yom: Any response from ya MTN pal with respect to our data complaints?
Posted by abubakar
@dawn: its hard to say. Etisalat offers reasonable services elsewhere but we are used to thew trend of getting inferior services here (ala MTN) without the ncc batting an eye. Market forces doesnt seem to guide the services rendered. If etisalat comes out with a bang then we can expect more, but if they start off with mediocre services i doubt they will do any better in the future. Glo seems to have lost the competitive spirit but MTN has gotten thiers. If etisalat doesnt come out of the box with some services that are superior to mtn's, mtn might stay ahead of the game by tweaking up thier's.
Posted by ambyzown
@Abu" I couldn't agree more. But it would be nice to see Etisalat come out with something special, afterall, they've poached on all the networks, hiring their best brains and offering them dizzying salaries.
@All: Does anyone here have a software or application known as Globetrotter Connect? its a HSDPA PC-Card dialler application. I need it to use a Sony VIAO SZ series laptop with built-in HSDPA capabilities.
The default software loaded on the laptop is developed for T-Mobile and does not allow you change configuration (APN, Username, etc.)
@Dawny: Yes I use the MTN daily data package on my PC, but its only for when I get home, as I have broadband in the office. 50mb is quite large for someone like me who basically uses the web for mail, messaging, and the odd download. for heavy data downloads, I rely on my office connection.

@abubakar,after spendin so much 2 acquire licence nd spent so much 2 start operations,i dont think dey can afford 2 b mediocre wit service.if they are,am sorry 4 their investors.but wat i think and wats logical about it is, they came in pretty late wen most people have aqcuired lines nd fones.so dey hav 2 come up wit packages nd tariffs dat wil attract subs 2 their network.if not na only belo-osagie nd thier own staffs go buy their lines.
Posted by dawny
also alheri telecom owned by dangote is also warmin up 2 start service in dec. checked out their website could not get much.but is stil better than etisalat website, which has no information.

Jolly! its getting really interesting. Lets wait and see.
Reltel (Zoom mobile) is now live in Benin. In the space of just 3 months, Starcomms, Visafone, Multilinks and now Reltel have made their debuts here. Did they just discover this city on the map?
Posted by dawny
@ambyzown do u stay in benin?.i stay in benin but sch in abuja.thats unibuja.which is d d best network in benin now?cos i plan 2 get starcomms 4 my browsin we i get 2 benin.
Posted by abubakar
@dawn: we have had that arguement here b4 abt the money invested for licences, infrastructure etc but the plain truth is that bcos ncc is so lax, they can bilk thier few initial subscribers of thier cred via dropped calls, unconnected calls being charged, etc. As we have gisted here b4, mtn made 9 figure profits in thier first 6 months. This is in an industry where one usually breaks even on investments after years! But not to be pessimistic, they might do something great. BUT, if as u said, they are taking the "great brains" (gag!!!!) from the existing telecom companies then we might just see the same "great" ideas regurgitated from thier old companies instead of fresh new ones!
Posted by dawny
@ abubakar i agree wit u a bit.but lookin at it closely there is really no new sub 2 exploit or cheat.etisalat has 2 get it right from day 1.mayb dats y they took so long 2 launch service.

I had the same impression once but have since seen the average naijaman' propensity towards multiple hand sets. When starcomms, celtel and multilinks rolled out thier 2k - 3k phones, 80%+ (my estimate) already had a line. A few even already had a line on that very same network but couldnt resist a "cheap" phone deal passing without having a hand in it. Believe me, if etisalat does free browsing for an undisclosed period, lots of people on this very forum would rush for the hardware necessary to take advantage. Even if the connection is erratic. Once they've weaned us off our previous provider, made us buy a data card/ dongle at a premium then they start giving the same level of services the rest give. That is, if the rests' services hvnt floundered. It isnt rhetoric, as mtn used a similar strategy over glo (the once premier mobile data provider)
Posted by dawny
@abubabakar i totally agree with u on dis.but i think we should b positive about etisalat.and we should not rush 2 hook up wit dem no matter how good their offer is.we should verify from those dat have subscribed to their network b4 we join dem.in dat case if is bad we will know.i did dat for visafone.i looked for some1 dat was using visafone's internet service, and asked how it was.he told me rheir service was messed up in abj.so i found out about reltel and heard their sevice was ok.dats wher i am 2day.and is fairly ok.
Posted by abubakar
@dawny: let me ask u this: if etisalat was offering, say, free browsing from 12am to 6am for its 1st 1000 subscibers, would u latch on as fast as possible or would u wait for someone's critic on it? They always have a way of drawing in even the most stubborn of us!
Posted by adrusa
I hope the ETISALAT people are listening to the whinings here. Glo had their breakthrough with per second billing. Without per second billing Glo will not be where they are today.
ETISALAT needs something similar to Glo's per second strategy and even more. When Glo came, many people have had a line for less than two years, it was not too difficult to change. But now many people have had their lines for 5 years and more, so ETISALAT needs some heavy incentive to attract subscribers. And free browsing will not do. That will attract about 2% of phones users.
The artisans, who are the bulk of phone owners know nothing about browsing and text. They know only about hello hello. So ETISALAT needs incentive on calls. Reduced tarrif is their only hope. Extended family and friends, deep off-peak cuts, bundled free phones, reduced gprs and sms tarrifs, reasonably large coverage at launch, combined with good pr will help them.
