@2tek: another vista bombshell. thats why i'm still on xp. my laptop will stay vista free most likely till its end. when i eventually get a new one (most likely sometime next yr) by then all vista kinks should have been ironed out.

@all: i feel like such a traitor to the anti-mtn movement cos im such a cheerleader, but on checking my balance i see i had N490 as my sms bonus! where did that come from? i havent seen any write up on how to get these bonuses. just to leak the secret, my wife delivered a gorgeous grinning girl day before and i was smsing like there was no 2mrw. could that have triggered it? or have i loaded (or expended) credit up to a certain target? what ever it is, they should accompany it with an sms. would be better PR for them.

A friend of mine is using d bluesoleil wit vista but don't knw how he got his to work.
Have a gr8 wknd y'all

@abu: Congrats! When do we come for rice and chicken? As per the MTN bonus, it seems that it comes with loading a minimum amount of airtime. I loaded recently and got N500 bonus airtime too. Is this a dream? Did someone benevolent secretly take over MTN Nigeria overnight? First, the great data packages. Now bonuses. What next?

@abu: CONGRATS! Hope mother and child are ok? Send our regards.

Posted by abubakar
@all: mother and child are fine, discharged from the hospital in record time. only my 1st born is a bit jealous as he's no longer the one and only.

@oluy: what next from mtn? maybe a bigger 3.5g footprint so some of us in the village can really enjoy the new bundles; and maybe cheaper tariffs on the dstv collabo, with OUR OWN PHONES!!! (did someone say oliver twist?)

Posted by OluYom
@abu: Welcome to the world of managing sibling rivalry. But your firstborn will adjust, by the grace of God. Its tough for them too - going from "dedicated server" to "shared hosting". I get your drift with MTN jare. But I doubt wider 3G coverage for now. Usually, only key cities are ever covered with 3G. EDGE is then deployed as stop-gap elsewhere. Many people are unaware that the latest EDGE platforms deliver top 3G speed i.e. 384kbps. So you may miss HSDPA, but you are not likely to miss 3G in the long run. As for DSTVmobile, its only a matter of time before they open usage up to ANY DVBH-enabled phone. Even then, how popular will mobTV be? Time will tell. Regards to madam and the kids!

@Abu.. Congrats

@2tek... Which version of blusoleil did u install? Earlier this year i installed version 5 on my laptop (vista buisness) and it started crashing all over the place. I have version 6 now and it is stable. But i don't think there is any advantage of bluesoleil over nokia pc suite if you have a nokia phone

Posted by 2tek
@pxthomas,it was version 5 i installed..well i dont even use any bluetooth software like that to connect.. i just click on the bluetooth icon, connect with my phone..the vista recognises modem over bluetooth and bingo i'm up and away into the www. Kai this mtn thingy sweet no be small, despite i'm using it over bluetoothe its smooth like hell. Went to a Nokia shop today to ask for data cable, and they told me 4,500! i was like please shove it up where the sun will never shine! what rubbish.
i'm sure b4 i visit say 4 of my otondo friends i will definitely come across a data cable lying around there somewhere, but untill then bluetooth all the way.
I'm in Ibadan now and 3g is on full blast, chei i dey go nasarawa soon oooo!

no more 3g, i hope edge is manageable sha.

easy all, hope we give argentina the stuffing they deserve for what happened the last time.

p.s
i think Nfa shld sack Ahmodu

Posted by 2tek
Well, twice is no longer a coincidence wetin dey wrong wiv siasa and argentina. Well big ups to the boys they really pushed hard.
@all how do i know if i'm no edge, and can mtn 's edge deliver 384kps really?

Posted by abubakar
@oluy: this sms bonus is baffling me. without loading cred it has increased to N520. Or is it the amt of sms u send that increases the bonus? if that is so, how do i spend it? maybe on non-mtn sms.

Posted by OluYom
@2tek: More recent phones display an 'E' to signify EDGE availability. 384kbps is the theoretical max (just like with 3G). in reality, on EDGE or 3G you'll get between 100 and 240 kbps as regular speeds. MTN says though that its EDGE network is not fully deployed yet. Not sure what that means, but it may mean that they do not have the full theoretical capability of 384kbps yet or that they have not covered everywhere they plan to.

I used the MTN 24-hour 50mb package yesterday, and it was then it really dawned on me: at 15k per kb, 50mb would be N7,500; wouldn't it? Unless my calculation is wrong, this is a REAL steal! Plus, browsing on my smartphone alone, I had to think up ways of using up my 50mb within 24 hours. Though I didn't really need them, I decided to download videos and even watch Youtube. Of course, it was soon over. As soon as the 50mb was up, the connection grabbed and emptied my airtime - in the middle of a video download :-D

To avoid that sort of problem i used a new sim with no airtime

@O'Yom: My 50MB only lasted 12 hours because like you I was trying to use up every MB. I wonder how I managed with glo's 35k/kb all this while.

@Brym: Guess we are both in a 'breaking in' phase. It'll probably pass with use and we'll just use the service without trying to eat all we can out of the 50mb.

when everyone was silent abt vid calls, i thot no one was reading thru the thread. is it mtn was late in rolling out the service in lag? i thot surely u had made them long ago!

by the way, my SMS BONUS is now N540. how do i use it b4 the month runs out and it disappears? the mtn web site is hopeless in procuring info and customer care is unreachable! in fact, as mtn has risen the bar in services, i've risen the bar in my expectations from them.

Posted by ambyzown
@Abu: I guess u use it to send MTN to MTN sms's. What baffles me is what the criteria for receiving sms bonus is. I loaded N1500 on my phone and didn't get a thing.

By the way, MTN seems to be deploying 3G across Nigeria quite rapidly. 3G is live in most parts of Benin.

@Oluyom: how much did it cost you for the video call?

Posted by Ifedisky
MTN has their guns trained and blazing now. Little niggles like, inability to recharge or failure to check credit has been largely addressed. Call set up is good too& congestion is almost totally absent. Was in Onitsha recently and video calls are almost turning to the default there.I pine for my beloved Glo and hope their new international status is not undermining them. It's a good world outside.

Something in the order of 82k per sec (the official price)

Posted by abubakar
there is a family and friends package (at least according to the site). i wonder how much that costs.

STILL NO SOLUTION TO MY RISING SMS BONUS? ANYONE?

Posted by abubakar
@amby: ddnt see ur post.i think u GET N5 bonus for every mtn-mtn SMS made. i only use my phone to make mtn-mtn sms and its when i was sending out bulk sms last wk that the bonus appeared. i get u expend it on non-mtn sms which i rarely make with my mtn. i'll try it and post results.

FAF packages for Video and Voice respectively are available only on XtraConnect. It gives you calls at a 15% discount.

I have no idea. I am as lost as you are too, mate.

@O'Yom: I checked the data counter on my P1 and discovered that with MTN settings, it reads;
Total sent : 1.1 MB
Total received: 8.0 MB

After loading and using the N500 One-time option that offers 50 MB, the data counter should be reading 50 MB + . Moreso, since I was cut off 12 hours after loading instead of 24 hours. Did MTN play a fast one on me?

@Brym: That's a serious one o!! And there's no data counter on my i780i to verify my usage.

This message was posted from a SGH-I780

Posted by abubakar
Hmmm... This is serious. If they are not giving the full time or they are short on the MB it'll be a heartbreaker!

Anyhow, i found out that the sms bonus is for non-mtn.

@all: hi house,my phone browser just went kaput. Reads APPLICATION CLOSED REASON 3 when u try opening. Does n e one av a clue? It's a p990i

Posted by OluYom
@Ifedisky: Are you saying that the browser no longer functions? If so, you may be looking at a bug in the firmware. You may need to do a hard reset or a firmware update to have that issue resolved.

@Brym...I have noticed the same thing too. From my calculation the N500 bundle package does not offer more than 30mb.

Posted by brym!
Well, let us all observe our data counter properly for a while and make our observations known to MTN. If dem no answer us then we go complain to Big Brother Nigeria(NCC).

Posted by 2tek
that will be mtn being mtn again..well no3g here,i doubt if this is edge. how do i check the speed of connectivity on vista? somewhere in the network settings says 460kps. Is that right? seems more like 20kps to me. Its really snail speed and yahoo messenger aint even working. Wish i was back in civilization : (

Posted by OluYom
@brym, pxthomas: I downloaded and installed a 3rd party data counter, then subscribed for the 50mb package again. At about 15mb usage, I got a text that my daily had expired (just about 8 hours after subscribing). However, i'm still browsing on the bundle, as I notice that my airtime is still intact. will see how this plays out. Keeping my fingers crossed.

@Oluyom: Yea it doesn't work n e more but thanks though. I heard the last firmware update for 990i would be due sometime in Septembr. Any news on that front?

Posted by OluYom
@all: The MTN data system terminated my 50mb bundle when my usage hit 25mb. This is bad! I mean, though 25mb for N500 is still a good deal, this is still 419 - false advertising. Why state 50mb when what you are offering is 25mb?

This message was posted from a SGH-I780

@oluyom: You'll have to take them up for this, surely? I'd have loaded and check seen but for my bad browser. Sure you can get a refund if you follow it up

@ifed: the firmware update might work if u were not up-to-date. But my guess is u are, so a hard reset will most likely do the trick.

@all: this mtn thing shouldnt be taken lightly! Has anyone gone to/ called thier CC? I'll be in abj by this wkend, so i'll try it out myself. Like the old saying goes, if it looks to good to be true, it isn't!!!

Posted by Ifedisky
@Abu: thanks I'll see wot happens by 2morrow. There's this announcement of a final firmware update on the p990i soon. Maybe I'll tarry awhile and checksee

Posted by ambyzown
Another victim of the MTN swindle.................... ME!

I knew it was too good to be true.

Whats MTN CC number? I need to lash out at someone. I only did 11mb before I got the dreadful sms.

Posted by adrusa
It is funny what MTN is up to now. The CC number advertised by MTN is 180 and self-service is 181. If you call 180 you will be told the number is incorrect. 181 just hangs up.

On a good note, however. I did a sim-swap on mtn some few days ago and it was swift. Bought a sim on getting to the office at 10am, went to their website and filled the form and voila by 4pm, same day my line was active!

Posted by abubakar
I think my honeymoon affair with mtn is over and reality has kicked back in. MTN ARE CROOKS! (AAHH! That feels better!!)

Posted by brym!
I loaded N500 yesterday and got value from MTN. Yes, 50 mb!
My data counter now reads 60.4 mb. Subtract the previous 9.1mb from it and you get 51.3 mb.
It is 1.3 mb over because MTN did not warn me when I hit 50 mb and so my balance credit was used up.
Since we all have different values, could it be teething problems of the new data plans or is MTN deliberately cheating some subscribers?

Posted by OluYom
Well, another weekend is here again, and another opportunity to try it out again. Will see how it goes again.

After Brym's post I was encouraged to try again, but have unable to make the data purchase. I've sent the sms but haven't received the confirmatory sms.

I doubt abt it being "deliberate" but as u know there are sins of commision and sins of omission!!! And the way most telecom operators make thier cc so unreachable! I can remember a time when econet's cc was the only one free and accessible (after a 5 - 10 min music interlude).

@all: With regards the MTN Daily bundle, members of the MobilityNigeria.com team were brainstorming this issue, and we decided to explore the possibility that the system is programmed to expire after 12 midnight. If we find this to be so, it means when MTN said '24hrs' they meant a window of roughly 12 midnight to the following midnight. We are experimenting with this at the moment. Contributions from PNF members welcome. PS: Any PNF whizkids interested in writing for MobilityNigeria.com?

My MTN Daily Data Plan observations.

1st Experience: Activated to browse @ 3:16pm. De-activated @ 2:39am. Data used: about 9mb.
2nd Experience: Activated to browse @ 11:18am. De-activated around 2am. Data used: about 50mb.

Conclusion: In MY case, this theory is flawed.QED.
