In fact, all the networks are so porous to free GPRS if you just do some little research.
I'll keep browsing free on all the networks until they change their ways & give us the kind of service we deserve.
I learnt that celtel & MTN were instructed by NCC to give N175 credit to their subscribers due to poor services, anyone know more about this?
browsin with hsdpa is really really fast BUT i still cant get to download. the stuff u told me didnt work. do u use it urself? cuz downloadin with 3G kills my starcomms connection and i really need that. thanx

I have moved to glo for free browsing since I can use it on my PC better than with MTN & it's faster. @brolly, u can download with MtN but u have to use phone wap browser, although it doesn't work on all sites. When I have more time, i'll give u the steps.

This is interesting, free browsing on all networks? Like Oluyom said, these networks are shooting themselves in the foot with their high data tariffs. I don't see why they cannot offer unlimited access for N5000 monthly.
@Mamba: check your PM. G900 is now available in Nigeria, but it sells for 70k now. let me know if u'd like to trade in ur P1

I Just got a txt From MTN about the N175 Credit, they said it will be sent on the 14th of June.
HI ALL, TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY!!!

Happy birfday mate! Ok then... SE's finally caught up, so i hear but they really havent brought anything new( like they used to). Megapixels dont count, its just size so a 3mp can take better snaps. We wont get anywhere as long as they keep using cmos sensors. CCD anyone? The latter will probably add some bulk but its welcome by me anytime. So SE created a non symbian, sliding, higher mp count n82 down to its t.v out and 30fps vga recording? I am underwhelmed.
Posted by mamba
@Angel, long time no see.. Happy Bday!!
@brolly, I gave up on SE long time ago but just cant understand why I'm using a P1i.
MP count on a phone doesn't mean anything for me as I'm yet to see an SE with better quality to MP than k750

wow..you mean the g900 is now in naija? Thats fast.
How d you find it,cos am really impressed. Slightly faster than the p1, and with better UI. The only negative is the slightly smaller screen, but u'll hardly notice it.

Nope, I was wondering if he'd be interested in selling his P1 so he could go pick up the G900.
@Chukzy: I saw the G900 with a guy who said he bought it from some shop at the palms. Didn't have the opportunity to play with it, but its really slim for a smartphone.

why would anyone want to give up a P1i for SE G900? except for the 5 MP camera the phone is no better than the P1i. no HSCSD, no EDGE, no infra-red, no QWERTY common how is this different from the P1 or even worse

Its called adventure.
Or else, why would anyone give up the warm comfort of his home to go climb a frozen, desolate thing like the Alps? Or leave the relative security of having their feet on firm ground to go on a crazy mission to the moon?
Adventure, my man!
Posted by brym!
May not be advenure in this case because Mamba did list some perceived shortcomings of the P1...that is why he is looking forward to the G900.
So, O'yom where are you exploring soon? Windows Mobile Land? because it seems like the the P5 will be disappointment going by the specs.
Have you guys noticed that everytime Apple coughs out a phone, the dedicated Windows Mobile and Symbian sites get defensive and start comparing their respective flagship phones to Apple's? Such impact from one company !!!

@brym: Yes; I understand about mamba. In my own case, its adventure.
Yes; I am looking at Windows Mobile. Honestly, I am getting disappointed with Symbian offerings, and I do suspect that WM may not be significantly different.
But I really want to try out more powerful processors and different interfaces. I wish the iPhone had a QWERTY keyboard and a few other things like: Office documents editing and 3rd party application installation. The UI is so smashing that I'd forget about Symbian and WM. But the iPhone is so crippled without those that I really wonder why anyone calls it a smartphone!
Posted by brym!
@O'Yom: With the release of iPhone's SDK a couple of months back, one should expect some quality apps from developers sooner. The business features will be added gradually and sooner than we know it Apple will drop this "touch" emphasis and release a keyboard device aimed at business users. Apple can't continue to ignore the business users especially in the US because they push the smartphone market over there.
Looking at the current smartphone landscape including the recent HTC releases, I still can't see a formidable QWERTY device that beats the multimedia and business features of the P1, all packaged in a compact size. So, the P1 continues to rule my world and I am planning to arm it with a 4GB card soon.

@brym: I agree about the P1. It is arguably king at the moment. Even the E90 is let down by lack of copy/paste in text editing mode.
But I am bored
Posted by brym!
O'Yom: I feel you. I am still struggling to get those Reltel promo offerings off my mind. Not necessarily to use the phone functions but to use it as a standalone PDA. My good old Toshiba 2032 which packed up a couple of months back served as my Bible Reader for a long time after Reltel disconnected my line. That Bible app I gave you really comes alive on a WM or Palm device where it is fully optimised.
I am just ranting anyway. I doubt if my Budget Minister will approve any new purchase so soon, she is trying to come to terms with my last stunt.
Posted by ambyzown
@Oluyom: Frankly, I don't see WM holding your attention for longer than a week. I believe you've used a WM device before, and don't think there'll be any significant change from your last experience.
@Brym: I have olive tree bible software with three bible versions on my E50, and its exactly the same as was on my iPaq so I don't think the platform makes the bible reader any different.
I also have a dictionary reader with eight different dictionaries on the same phone.

I think you've got me mixed up with someone else. I've never owned/used a WM device in my life
Still, you may be right, and WM may not hold my attention. But Symbian is killing me at the moment too. Has anyone seen the review of the just announced E71 at AllAboutSymbian? We've been expecting the E71 for so long and then Nokia throws that at us? In my book, the E71 is just as much a disappointment as the E90 was.
Maybe I should ditch Symbian, Palm and WM altogether, jump on OSX and get a shiny (but practically useless) iPhone instead?

Well amby, I only knew when I ran the app on Palm, WM and Symbian UIQ devices. The difference was not in the Bible versions but in the interface and navigation options. Though running on top of Olive Tree the app was actually designed for WM and Palm and so the embedded illustrations, graphics and maps only show on these devices.

I read the review today and I think it is quite an improvement for an E series Nokia. The shrunk size is to meet up with current enterprise standards. So, what is disappointing about it?

Yes, it is an imprivement on the E61i at least. But note the following:
- The S60 implementation used is still a little under-powered at times, most notably when opening images and playing back videos (jerky playback). In this day and age?
- Gallery is the same tired old application as in S60 devices three years ago. That dull layout!
- Messaging - another application long overdue for an update - is largely unchanged from earlier devices. Attachment support, sorting, etc are issues.
- stripped down version of the camera on the E90, with comparatively cheap optics and sensor. Its the same megapixel, but performs worse.
I like the phone. I may end up with one. My company may even kit some of our staff with a few units. I just keep asking why these manufacturers keep letting simple issues be carried over on a device that's coming out 2 years after its older sibling. That's disappointing.
Posted by brym!
@O'Yom: Nearly all device manufacturers are guilty of this, that is why there will never be perfect devices. To be fair to them, they take alot of factors into consideration in designing these devices and you truly cannot meet all the requirements of your target market.
Posted by OluYom
True, but that just sucks though. That's why consumers will keep getting disappointed again and again.

Speaking on Reltel Promo. Is anybody familiar with the samsung ip-830w? The internet said it is a CDMA/GSM Combo, is that true? How does it hold up. I also heard that it has loads of problems? Any experience?!
Meanwhile I got the reltel Mogul and I think it is the best thing to happen to telephony in Nigeria! HTC Mogul for N20,000+2 weeks of free internet access!? Thumb up for reltel.
The bad part is that Reltel is pure rubbish in Ibadan. The network regularly disappear for hours and sometimes days. How can they be taken seriously with that kind of mediocre performance! Reltel-Ibadan, please sit up or one day, I will change the ESN of my mogul and move over to Onet.

can I also get the free gprs details pleeeeeeeeeeease!!!!!!!! Thanks. God bless you as you share!

I heard about this sometime ago but that was a Windows CE device.
I read the review, it is quite bulky, runs on WM5 and comes with a down-sliding qwerty keypad.
Is Reltel offering this in the promo too?

No intention to tempt. But Check out the value; A windows mobile 6 (6.1 if you are brave to put new unsupported firmware) phone with wifi (b/g), gps, 512Mb micro SD, 64mb ram, 256mb rom, 2.0 bluetooth, size of nokia n95, 2mp camera with flash, 2 weeks of browsing (on the phone and on your laptop, all cables included) all for N20,000! It is a steal! I have had it for two weeks and I think it is rock solid.
What I need reltel to do now is to give me a pay as you go internet access and everything will be perfect.

@adrusa: I am quite familiar with the specs of the Mogul having read several reviews of the device when I was contemplating to buy one early this year. But O'yom who dropped his Retel Treo a couple of weeks earlier gave a bad report of Reltel's data service.
If I am right, the 'pay as you go' internet service is more expensive, why not choose a data plan?

Is it possible to buy the reltel Mogul and swith the network to Multilinks or Onet?
Posted by brym!
@mamba: It is possible but in the Lagos area only Intercellular network accepts to do this. Talking of Intercellular, do they provide internet service? Are they still in business?
Posted by ambyzown
I was about to ask the same question. what exactly is intercellular up to? I heard a rumour sometime ago that Dangote's telecoms company bought intercellular
Posted by OluYom
@amby: such an acquisition would be a welcome development. Intercellular almost doesn't exist any longer.

@brym
I just need some light mobile internet. I have an unlimited broadband in the office. But if their internet is all that you have, I think they are okay. I have taken it through its paces and I'm relatively satisfied.
@all
There is no way to move your mogul right now. I have been researching it. You can be sure if there is a way, I will find it.

VERY POSSIBLE! It only requires some little work and it is not at any provider's shop. Hope that make sense. How about this free browsing? Nobody wants to share?!
Posted by mamba
The free browsing only works on opera mini via MTN. If you already have Reltel internet, it might not be very useful to you..
but if you still want it, send me a PM and I'll 4ward it to you.
Have you guys heard about Nokia now owning Symbian (UIQ, S60 and MOAP(S) to be integrated)

@adrusa: If switching to another CDMA network can be done outside a providerl's shop, please share the knowledge.

@all: this free browsing of a thing is really giving me pangs of you know what.. I've been hitched on the MTN network unerringly for weeks now but decided to check out glo few days back. While MTN's albatross has been described by Mamba;Opera,Glo's is a minor tweak in the settings(sorry I'm not saying which) and you're there.I can't remember loving my 990's browser as I do now cos I have the latitude to leave the images open and the quality is glorious. Unlike MTN's where pictures are hardly saved,Glo gives one the option of saving small files saved. My 4giggy is almost bursting at d seems now. But alas comes this conscience pangs on me and I begin to wonder; How come this hack happened across all the networks and at the same time? What av the engineers been doing about this cos, surely, the packet data revenue must av dropped substancially(I've not loaded credit on MTN for ages). Or, are the leakages official policy decisions of the providers to bond pple like me bf unleashing the full power of 3.5G? You see,I'm enjoying now but I know it won't last and thatz scary. After getting addicted & the freebie goes belly up and with the current data charges, what would pple like me do?or is this their bait before a price crash? Whatever the case it is, I hereby take a position that'll ensure my sanity when the bubble burst!;I AM NOT ENJOYING UR FREEBIE. I AM WILLING TO PAY 5K FOR MONTHLY DATA BUNDLES SO I'LL OPTIMALLY ENJOY MY PHONE WITHOUT LET OR HINDRANCE!.SURELY THIS'S BETTER THAN THIS FREE BROWSING HORROR SCENE AND STILL MAKE MONEY AND PLUG THE REVENUE LEAK. UNTIL
U GRANT MY REQUEST FREE BROWSING MUST CONTINUE NUENDINGLY.Expiation, concluded, carthasis, reached!! pangs, subsided!!!
!!
Posted by mamba
Is Glo network 3.5G enabled?
I get close to 124kbps on 3G only with Glo..
That's one reason why I hate SE. I can't believe the G900 is still not 3.5G capable. I'm definitely not buying it cos I have made up my mind now and moving to Nokia N78.
Check MTN website for data speeds..
@Ifed, maintain the secrecy...

@mamba: I've gotten much more than that on Glo 3G. The major problem I have with Glo 3G is its institutionalised instability. Works today; gone for a week!
@all: I'm taking a plunge and picking up Reltel's Mogul this week, if all goes well. For those of you still interested in Reltel internet service and not sure whether they have improved on delivery, I will be your free guinea pig, all other things being equal (honestly, someone ought to start paying me for this!)

My Mogul arrived this afternoon. First impressions: solidly built! Feels a little heavy though.
I'm still transferring my contacts and files to it. It seems Reltel is yet to activate my internet subscription: keeps telling me my username or password is not correct.
Adrusa, can you kindly confirm the format for username and password?
I've installed Opera 8.65 already, installed and activated a better theme than the yellow Sprint version that came with it.
Media player is beautiful with video playback, though I think the volume is poor.
Bla bla bla...
My P1i departs to its new owner tomorrow.
