@all:A big hello to the real elites of 9ja.You guys've kept here ticking even though it's dreadfully quiet sometimes.
@brym:In addition to Oluyom's reply, cell phone batteries drain out according to the service quality in an area;the more bars one has on his mobile the lesser the battery drain and vice versa.I noticed on Glo3G that reception toggles between one and two bars. This drains batteries like mad
@all:General observations on glo3g.
1,On 3G only mode:Call quality even with one bar is generally brilliant. No dropped calls(amazingly).Service is near stable;one or two bars indoors, three, outdoors. But the drawback is that your battery is in perilious times!
2,GSM-3G mode:Bedlam! The very anthithesis of quality service;Bars toggle in millisecond basis between one and zero.Calls drop alarmingly. One is almost always not reachable when called.3G signal disappears more times than appears on your screen.Your battery is in a race to get to the finish line!
3,GSM ONLY mode:Peace at last!,although without the speed of 3G.Maximun service at all times(depends on areas though Lagos is,largely, well covered).Absolutely no dropped calls. By implication, battery life's more stable.
THAT IS ALL

So Ifed has given u the option, its one or the other, not both!!

@all: Does anyone know how much a stylus goes for?? Lagos guys chip in!!!!

Posted by OluYom
@abu: I have no idea how much a stylus costs. But I'll let you know if I do get any info.

Glo 3G came on at my end for a few minutes yesterday, and it was quite fast. Sadly, its off again. And for some crazy reason, GPRS doesn't connect.

When are we going to have stable and reliable platform in this country?

@all
i really appreciate the comments by contributors to this thread. because of your incite i was able to decide on the perfect phone to buy. i just got the S/E P1i and its a lovely piece of engineering. i would like to know if its safe for me to update my firmware and also how can i pimp my phone like themes, applications and games and where i can get them. thanks all.

Posted by OluYom
@smol: welcome! A good place to start for freeware for your device is http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk. Check under the freeware section. www.mobile9.com is also a huge resource for themes, wallpaper, mp3 and video files.

@Abu:To think that such a little piece of rubber would give one such hiccups!I'm into my second styli now.Broke the first one the week I bought the phone;sat on it by error.I'll be on the lookout for you though. How's your 990?,looking for an ally (or,allies)!
@All: Heard NCc banned Glo's current promo.Good for them!I can't be happier. The network's been cringeworthy lately.Even their acclaimed billing system has been tosh.they've wiped away my credit on several occassions without cause and charged #10 for a glo to glo sms even when sending failed.
Is it just me or does anybody else feel Glo has the worst customer care in the whole world? Those accursed girls at their call centers are near illiterates!I'll chronicle my woes in their hands, one day!

@ O'yom, thanks for the sites you posted, am about to check them out. i like your comments on various issues on this thread, you keep me coming back to read this thread. great work and brym too

@ifedisky, you should count yourself lucky that you can at least reach glo's CC, i have tried over and over again to reach them, i cant even browse with glo these days, to make call sef na wahala.
wetin we go do, abi which network we wan run go now. they are all birds of a feather.

Posted by OluYom
I am tired of the unreliability of data services on most mobile networks. I keep having to switch SIMs. Celtel and Glo have been absolutely unreliable. MTN has performed admirably, but the cost is something else.

[/quote]@Smol.. My brother i don't bother to call their CC's anymore. It usually one story or another that you get from them. Most time you are ahead of them in terms of the latest trend in IT. The Glo centre in Warri could not configure my director's Nokia N81 to browse. I wonder if they have heard of opera mini.

You can check these sites for more apps. www.ipmart-forum.com, www.dotsis.com and symbiangalaxy.org

@smol: Is your Glo SIM already provisioned/activated for GPRS? If not, you need to call customer care or visit a GloWorld to have it done and have the settings sent to your phone via SMS.

If it already is, all you need is to create a data account with the proper settings. The WAP over GPRS settings for Glo are available on my blog at http://www.yomisays.com/?page_id=835.

@Smol: welcome to the place to be,you won't regret the cruise!
As you're using a p1,it should be best to send "ACTIVATION" on sms to 333.Then you'll get a 3G-Glo direct setting as I'm not sure p1 can be configured for WAP
@OluYom:Please whats with the Celtel GPRS?I was off coverage for some time but when I got back to Lagos,January,I found out there.s no more GPRS signal on my phone. Any tips and tricks will be welcome.Sorry,I could have given you a shoulder to cry on over the Data wahala, but you see,I'm crying too(sniff sniff)!

Welcome aboard smol, hope u'll enjoy it here as much as I do.

@Ifedsky: welcome back. while you were away, Celtel de-provisioned all pre-paid subscribers from their gprs network as soon as they upgraded their billing software. (Their previous platform installed during the Econet era could not handle data, hence the freebie for so long) Requesting for fresh OTA is the only way to get gprs again, but then, you only get wap on pre-paid and you are billed 10k/kb.

@Oluyom: I'm in Benin City, Edo State and I'm on celtel 90 a post paid package that offers me unlimited gprs for a monthly fee of N10,000

Posted by pxthomas
@amby... Is it right to assume celtel gprs is nationwide now?

[ This Message was edited by: pxthomas on 2008-04-15 22:16 ]

Posted by Ifedisky
@Ambyzown:Thanks,but how do one send for the OTA,d'you still remember their code?. Would be helpful even with Wap.Hope their's no size limitation for downloads. The tarrif's a beaut.

Posted by 234hay
@Smol: You send "Activate" to 444 NOT 333!

@ Ifedisky: I don't know how if they still do OTA provisioning via text but they do via their website: http://196.46.240.47:8806/fro[....]e.view;jsessionid=aIx-Q4GAT8D9

My goodness! How can I goof like that! It indeed is 444 not 333.Am really sorry Smol.Must be the vodka I took on saturday!

Posted by smol
@234hay. thanks man. i saw an advert in the papers and sent the text to the right number.

@ifedisky: no sweat man, but u sure say na vodka u dey on that time or na shepe or ogogoro. u know how this things make you think you are on vodka or some nice champagne. take it easy on the bottle man. lol

Posted by Ifedisky
@234hay:Thanks man. I just got hooked back to Celtel GPRS without fuss. Took less than three minutes on their website which had a wide collection of configurable new handsets unlike the MTN website that has p900 as the latest of the sony ericsson p series.
@Smol:Can you read labels when you're on cloud nine?I could'nt!

Posted by OluYom
@amby: can you confirm that Celtel GPRS is no longer generally restricted to a few locations? Are you able to browser ANYWHERE Celtel has coverage?

What are the requirements to get on Celtel 90?

Thanks.

@ife: If its a postpaid line, the only way you are likely to get the settings is by taking up a contract.

@O'Yom: I can verify that gprs coverage in Delta is not complete. Warri, Abraka and environs don't have coverage. pxt may shed more light about his area.

Some info about Celtel packages:

http://www.ng.celtel.com/en/business-services/index.html

Posted by brym!
A few months back, I considered switching to Celtel Postpaid because of the cheap data tariff. I changed my mind after I observed that the tariff for voice calls is damn too expensive relative to Glo. See comparison:

Celtel 90: On net calls ...40k/sec; Off net calls...50k/sec
Data rate: 10k/kb
Monthly Access: N2,000.

Glo optimiser: On net Call...25k/sec; Off net calls...37k/sec
Data rate: 35k/kb
Monthly Access: N1,250.

A heavy data user may overlook celtel voice tariff and only sweat out the monthly access fee, but for a light data user like me(with operamini on my side ) glo remains attractive.
Besides, there is still the coverage issue.

you are absolutely correct

Posted by ambyzown
Coverage is still a problem with celtel gprs, not all cities are covered. Its convenient for me to use celtel because my base is covered, but it might not be suitable for some other person.
@Oluyom: Prerequisites for Celtel90 are similar to any post-paid package, but you get to choose your credit limit yourself, which is then vetted and either approved or reduced. You need to sign up for the unlimited data package separately though.

Posted by abubakar
@amby: last i knew the minimum for the celtel post paid package was 5k. that was what put me off. if it was 3k i know i could use that in calls if the gprs was absent (by omission or commission). But if it has changed pls give us a shout!!!

Posted by OluYom
@amby: Thanks.
@all: is it just me, or is celtel now charging crazy for WAP GPRS? Since earliy this morning, my airtime has been disappearing like crazy! A staff of mine who uses Celtel GPRS too has confirmed same on her line.

You are not compelled to use up the 5k every month, rather that 5k is your upper credit limit for any given month.

please can someone tell me how much iphones go for in lag and availability
sorry iv been mia...exams are a bitch

Posted by 234hay
@ Mariwun: You probably new some1 would say something about your last comment. But I would like to know if you meant female dog or its satellite television and foreign programming that's using you as a mouth piece(well in this case finger piece)?

Posted by brym!
@mariwun: As at 4 weeks back, Dax Tech @ Saka Tinubu, V.I sold the 16GB for N92K while the 8GB was available for N76K.

What about the W960i? anyone have an idea of the current price?

I guess I spoke too soon about the efficacy of Celtel gprs, because since that post, the connection has gradually deteriorated to a point that it is practically unusable now.

Ah! I was wondering when someone would say something about that.

Posted by brym!
@amby: Dax Tech seems to have the best price for your W960...N68.5k.
@All: What browser are you guys using to access the net? I am still hooked to the Russian-spiced Opera mini 2 mod. So rich in features and fast!

Posted by pxthomas
Brym let me know when w960 drops to 50k.

Well concerning the browser issue i have 4 installed on my phone: opera mini 4, opera mini 4.1 beta, teashark and the fabulous opera mini mod 2. I am posting this with opera mini 4.1 beta. My problem with Teashark is the private data it stores. You have to go to preferences to clear private data at the end of every browsing session. The Russian mod 3 (eng version) of opera mini will soon be out.

@coola: I beg, spare us! Does this place look like a forum for lovebirds?

Are you back from the moon?

@brym: The built-in Opera Mobile on my P1i is my favourite. I use Opera Mini 4 to cut down costs when I need to.

Hey! Shakur where did you spring from? Don't you know we are "ghosting" right now.
Your profile says you are based in leeds. Do you have celtelk (is it celtel) there?

The problem is less of upper or lower cred limit as it is that Im hardly long in an area that has Celtel gprs so there is no need to force all my voice calls on to my celtel phone when im out of gprs area just to ensure i make the 5k min, at the same time loading my mtn to get gprs. I know i cn make 3k of calls on the celtel but not 5k. Multiple lines no good o!
