@brym: For one, you will need GSM for those times when you are at a location without 3G coverage.
Apparently, Glo's problem at your end is different from what's up at my end. Oh, well.
Posted by brym!
Yeah AYA, I will be forced to do so tomorrow. But for now let me enjoy it. Let me know when 3G improves at your end so that we can try out that video call. Is video calling cross network yet?

Angelgirl: Thanks. Yes o; 3G on both Glo and MTN are being billed, 35k per kb and 60k per kb respectively.

Thank u Angel. I don be old married man now...3 weeks !
@AYA Sorry about the accident. I wonder what happened. Is it true that Kia Rio has no airbags and ABS?
@Brix I read that MTN's profit after tax dropped from 268billion in 2006 to just 78billion this year. They also grew to 16.5 million subscribers in naija (more than MTN ZA's 14.6m subs). What we are wondering is WHY the drop in profit? Maybe it is the network congestion on MTN has defied all solutions?
BTW Glo has 16million subs, so we should expect a clear winner in 2008. Glo should now throttle forward into the lead. Don't ask me where they will get the new customers.

I am posting this from 3G only connection. When I switched to 3G/GSM option on my phone a few minutes ago I lost the internet connection. Same thing happened when I switched to GSM only: the gprs symbol just disappeared and the phone did not connect.
Hmm! Seems like I am stuck with 3G for now.

@OluYom That was one quick re-branding. I am dying to know Why?
So can we write @Olu? @Yom? @old_AYA? @OAYA???
@All My search for the cheapest way to yap with my new madam has led me to -wait for it- MTEL!!!!!
Mtel has been offering free on-net calls since December 2007. MTEL may continue like this until its troubles are over. I just found out yesterday and I got a line for myself and told my madam to dig up the MTEL I got her last year. I will keep u guys posted.
Meanwhile, I will enquire about the internet access from my pal there. "Someone must benefit from a crisis.... why not you?" May MTEL's troubles continue!!!!!!!
The only problem: getting an MTEL recharge card is very difficult. The card sellers look at you funny like "What clown is this who is still using Mtel?"

@coolapostle: I went through your website, gsm-nigeria.com. What's up? It hasn't been updated in quite a while. Is your newsletter still on too?

I have not written on GSM since December 2006. That has affected the website.

This new OluYom doen't sound well in my mouth like AYA does.
@OluYom, what is the requirement for 24-7 gprs on MTN/glo and (price/month) for both?
i don't mind if you can help me with a quick review of the speeds of both services compared with CDMA like multilinks or starcomms.
Posted by brix25
@coola: MTN indicated that ARPU( average revenue per user) had been down in most of its markets which contributed to the lower bottom line...they had also invested capital projects in Naija and other markets which pushed up revenue but which did not have much of an effect on boosting profits.

MTN 24-7 internet costs N13,500 monthly. Glo is in the same range.
If you want glodirect over 3G on your prepaid package, its N12,000 monthly, plus a one-time security deposit of another N12,000.
Speed-wise, 3G on both MTN and Glo is significantly faster than CDMA 1x. Infact, when I tested Glo 3G, I felt like throwing away my Starcomms 1x modem.

@OluYom, I'm currently based in Akure where 3G service is absent for now.
How about comparing GPRS with CDMA 1x?
Which is better in speed, MTN or Glo?

Generally, CDMA 1x is faster than GPRS. it is difficult to compare current Glo and MTN GPRS speeds, as I haven't used Glo GPRS in ages.

I had hoped to find some time and convert the whole site to a joomla site so that it is easier to add new articles. But, I just can't find any time.
I don't intend to write on GSM in the future. The industry has become boring.
Since the site costs me just 3.6k to maintain yearly, I will probably keep it going. I am open to any ideas. I can even sell it
I also have a huge collection of newspaper clippings on GSM dating back to 2001 when GSM first came till date that will make a great site or product: "This Day in GSM History"

I also read that they are giving higher dividends to their shareholders this year. But that huge drop from 268b to 78b needs more explanation.
@All Did any of you Guys invest in the MTN Private Placement? I hear it was 1million minimum investment. Big Boys only! I wonder what the price will be when they eventually offer MTN Nigeria shares.

I just downloaded and installed. It ran, but the menu isn't responding properly, so its quite useless. It seems it wasn't designed with touchscreen support.

PS: I like O'Yom! Why didn't I think of that for my rebranding? Maybe I should be consulting you next time

@O'Yom: I got the Cellity buzz but didn't recognise it. I thought it was 419 flash.
Yeah! I got another P1 four days after I despatched the earlier one to you. Boy, you should have seen the look on my wife's face...I read it to mean 'only God can deliver you'.
I went back to the P1 because of the QWERTY keypad and RAM.
Posted by OluYom
Brym,
I had a good laugh over that bit about replacing the P1i and your wife's response. I actually read it out to my wife, so she'd know that she's not alone. I suggested that between the two of them, they could form an Association of Mobile Geeks' Wives....
What d'ya think?
Posted by brym!
@O'Yom: She would prefer an Anti-Geek Prayer Band.
Nice lady, my wife and a real gift from God...who else can tolerate me?
Posted by OluYom
@brym!: No way will I allow madam join that one o. She sef no fit. To be praying against my source of income?
PS: UIQ has released a set of 5 themes. The link is at http://mobile.allaboutsymbian.com/news/item/6987_Give_your_UIQ_3_smartphone_a_s.php. I am currently using the Chili theme. Simply stunning!
Posted by brym!
I saw them yesterday but wasn't too impressed. I am using Gdesk as my UI so naturally I prefer themes that blend with Gdesk designs. I am currently using an iPhone theme and an iPhone Gdesk design. I will post a screen shot on Monday.
I am porting Gdesk on my wife's E50 this evening, I pray she likes it.

Why do you need GDesk on your P1 when you have 15 customizable desktop shortcuts? I didn't realise Gdesk is now available for S60. Where can I download it?
Posted by brym!
@amby:Why limit myself to 15 shortcuts when Gdesk gives the option to include more, all designed to my taste?

@O'Yom: Have you updated your P1 firmware? I am considering updating mine but everytime I remember the bug I caught after updating my W950 I hesitate.
Posted by ambyzown
why risk an update if your current firmware is stable? if u update now, be prepared to put up with slow handwriting recognition.
Posted by brym!
@amby: I can live with that since I never use handwriting recognition, I have fully adapted to P1's keypad. Was your boss' P1 problem a result of updating? Any other issues?
Posted by OluYom
@brym: I attempted an update when I first got the P1i, but SEUS said I already had the most up-to-date software. Is there a new firmware release?
Posted by pxthomas
Teashark is working well on N71.

No, it wasn't as a result of updating, he lost his previous P1 which had the original firmware that shipped with P1 at release, then he bought a replacement which obviously, had a more recent firmware with the HWR bug. I was just concerned that you might upgrade to this firmware and its attendant bug.

Well so much for updates, the connection at the office these days is terribly slow. Any attempt to update with that slow speed will brick my device.

That bad? I thought I was losing out on Celtel by sticking to Glo. With Glo I sometimes swich between GSM and 3G networks. When I leave my phone on GSM+3G mode, data connectivity disappears and voice calls drop so often. Still can't figure if it is Glo wahala or my phone. Again, I still don't understand why my battery runs down faster when I am on 3G. Any technical explanation for this?
Posted by ambyzown
I have learnt to bear the hiccups of Celtel gprs and pray for a stable connection each time I browse. Sometimes, like today, the connection is marvelous.
Posted by OluYom
@brym: mobile phone radios generally consume more power latching on to a 3G signal. As a rule, if you switch on 3G your battery life drops. Of course, some batteries and phones handle this better than others.
Believe me, you are missing nothing on Celtel. Stick with Glo till further notice.
@amby: I don suffer for Celtel hands with respect to GPRS. I finally gave up. Hopefully, they will sort this out quickly.

Only because you are in Lagos. Celtel gprs is about the best out here. I was able to use it to download itunes, avast4 and PDF995 yesterday. A cumulative of approximately 40mb of data. Not bad eh?
I guess the theory of gprs using excess bandwith is playing out in my favour here. Celtel is the worst voice call network here, but that means its the best for data. One man's meat..........

This place is quiet cos nothing is happening. I was thinking with the spread of 3g in some areas gprs spread would increase in others. But instead its gotten worse. The signal is so short lived i barely have time to get my mail, read posts and get to post up.
Jumping out of the tech world, did anyone here buy Japaul shares and have u heard anything about when the certs are coming out?
My son has helped me loose my spare stylus and now im using pens and keys to scratch my touch pad. I saw a P910 stylus going for thousands a few yrs back. Are they still ridiculously expensive? Isnt it a piece of plastic and rubber?
